Chapter 591: Chapter 591 That Man

(Chapter Seven)

It was just October, and Tibet had fully entered winter, with many places heavily snowbound and extremely difficult to traverse.

Yet in the ice and snow, a group dressed in snow camouflage continued their arduous training.

They trained and carried out missions at high altitudes all year round and had long become accustomed to the environment here—those who hadn’t were already eliminated.

The “Plateau Snow Wolves” were a special forces unit that struck fear into the enemy who had encountered them and caused other special forces squads to be quite jealous. However, the strength of this unit’s commanding officer was so formidable, and the soldiers he trained were so skilled, that the commanders of other special forces units, despite their envy, deep down respected them.

This unit’s actual designation was “Snow Fox”. The name might sound like something straight out of a mythical tale, but their nature had nothing to do with the slyness of foxes; the entire team was known for its ferocity.

The commanding officer of “Snow Fox” was considered a super freak by his men.

He acted fiercely, his personal combat skills were exceptional, and it seemed he never lost in one-on-one combat. His marksmanship was also extremely precise—blindfolded and after spinning around twice, he could hit a target a hundred meters away dead center. He could pilot various combat vehicles and was also very adept with all types of aircraft in the military service. He had been to Mount Everest several times and could survive a month on the plateau in the coldest winters without food.

He was, you might say, an all-around super soldier.

Today, this super soldier and commanding officer was still leading his men in training near their base in the mountainous region.

The average altitude of Tibet is three thousand meters, their camp was situated at an altitude of three thousand six hundred meters, and their training areas were all at an altitude above four thousand meters.

At this altitude, ordinary people would feel short of breath just standing still, let alone during intense exercise. But for this freak and his soldiers, training at such altitudes was as easy as walking on level ground.

Survival of the fittest: only those who could withstand the conditions without being eliminated were the adaptors to the environment, the strong ones on the highlands.

Due to the difference in longitude, sunrise and sunset in Tibet occur several hours later than in inland China. At three o’clock in the afternoon, the morning training had just concluded. The freakish commanding officer with a beard and determined eyes, whose complexion did not bear the highland redness typical of the Tibetan people, gathered his squad leaders to report the morning’s training results before returning to his dwelling to prepare for lunch.

Due to the bad weather and intense training, everyone needed to rest at noon; otherwise, the quality of the afternoon training could not be guaranteed.

In recent years, the authorities had increased their investment in troop infrastructure. Being one of the most elite special forces, the “Snow Fox” had quite good conditions in their camp. Company commanders and deputy commanders had their own private suites, and even the ordinary soldiers shared a room for two, each furnished with various sanitary facilities.

Even though the uniforms of the “Snow Fox” special forces were specially designed to withstand the chill and snow to a great extent, they would still be soaked through after half a day’s training. After returning to his room, he took off his wet clothes and took a cold shower in the bathroom.

Although the camp provided hot water, he had persisted in taking cold baths all year round for over a decade.

After quickly finishing his shower, he wrapped himself in a bath towel and stepped out of the bathroom.

As he was drying his buzz-cut with the towel, the mobile phone on the table outside began to ring.

Not many people knew his mobile number, and even fewer would call him, so when he heard his phone ring, he immediately went over to it.

But when he saw the incoming caller ID on his phone, his face instantly changed.

In any situation, whether holding a gun or a military dagger, his hand was steady; this held true even in sub-zero temperatures.

He could lift hundreds of pounds with ease and his hand would not tremble.

But as he saw the number on the caller ID, his hand began to tremble lightly, feeling as if the phone weighed a thousand pounds, almost too heavy to hold.

Having spent a long time in high-altitude areas, his lung capacity was very large, at least twice that of a normal person. He wouldn’t have short breaths or pounding hearts under strenuous exercise like others would. However, now, not only was his heartbeat accelerating, but his breathing was also very rapid.

He was someone who never panicked or struggled to make decisions in the face of events, but amidst the trembling of his fingers, he simply didn’t know what to do, whether to answer the call or not. Eventually, amidst his hesitation, the ringing of the phone stopped abruptly.

When the ringing stopped, his heart leaped violently again, as if stabbed by something, and he suddenly felt very panicked, as though he had done something wrong.

He held the phone blankly, deciding in his heart that if that number called again, he would answer without hesitation.

But to his surprise, the call didn’t come again, which instantly weighed heavily on his mood, feeling as if something had been sucked out of his heart.

Just as he was feeling depressed and hesitating whether to call back, the text message tone rang out, and he quickly pressed to open it.

“I have something very important to tell you, call me back when you see this message.”

Followed by another one: “If you can’t call back within half an hour, then call me after ten o’clock tonight.”

Seeing this message, he didn’t hesitate any longer and immediately returned the call.

The phone had barely started ringing when it was picked up by the person on the other end, followed by a soft woman’s voice: “Hello…”

Hearing this voice, which had hardly changed, the man, who would not change his expression even if Mount Tai collapsed upon him, felt as if his heart had been struck hard, almost shedding tears. After so many years, he was finally hearing her voice with his own ears for the first time.

Because of the excitement, he was at a loss for words for a moment; the person on the other end seemed to anticipate such a reaction and didn’t say anything right away.

After a short pause, he softly replied with a “hello”.

A thousand words were ready to be spoken, yet after a simple “hello”, he didn’t know what to say.

The woman on the other end of the phone was the same, falling silent after the “hello”, not knowing what to say or how to say it.

In the end, it was the man who spoke first. After taking at least five or six deep breaths, he cautiously asked, “Nan… Nan, what made you… think of… calling me today? I… I was startled just now, didn’t react in time.”

If his soldiers heard him speak like this, their jaws would surely drop. Their freakish commander, when has he ever stammered like this?

Who has ever seen him this nervous?

“I thought you might be too busy to answer the phone,” the woman’s voice came through, “I have something to tell you… that is, Ling’er, he…”

“What happened to him?” As soon as the man heard his son mentioned, his brows immediately furrowed.

“He’s fine, he’s just caused some trouble.” The woman quickly explained to prevent the man from worrying and told him the whole story.

Learning that his son was not in any trouble, the man’s brows relaxed, but as he listened to the woman recount the events, his brows furrowed again.
