The Wolf God's Unwanted Luna
Chapter 259: The Little Shadows
Vivian’s POV
Then Zahliver suddenly froze right in the middle of his frantic motion, let out a short, bewildered laugh, and took a long, deep breath like he had just realized how completely ridiculous he was acting.
"Okay," he started, flashing me a sheepish, lopsided grin that made my chest tighten, "I am really sorry about all that weird panic. I am not usually this... chaotic, I promise."
"Really? Never would have noticed," I replied dryly, speaking in a slow tone while watching him closely as if I half expected him to start spinning around in circles next.
He shrugged his broad shoulders offhandedly, then moved with noticeably calmer, more deliberate gestures, turning his attention back toward assembling what looked like a very complex sandwich.
"I have just got a whole lot on my plate right now. A lot of heavy things to organize, and a lot of stressful plans to make," he explained, his voice turning much more serious.
"Like what kind of things?" I asked, curiosity winning out as I walked around the smooth kitchen counter to stand right beside him.
He glanced sideways at me through his dark eyelashes as he carefully stacked the deli ingredients.
"Well, for starters, the next three days are going to be completely full of heavy funeral rites, with families needing comfort and guidance... which, by the way, you handled so beautifully today," he added with a soft, proud smile, making no attempt at all to hide the genuine admiration shining in his voice.
I felt a warm, golden flush bloom brightly in my chest at his kind words, even as my heavy thoughts drifted back to what those upcoming days actually meant for our pack.
"Then, after that, there are two full days of silence for the fallen pack members," he went on, his deep voice dropping to a low, somber pitch. "Honestly, those days might actually be even harder to get through than the actual funerals."
I nodded slowly, completely understanding the crushing weight of what was heading our way. Silence days for wolves were not what most ordinary people might think. They were not about quiet stillness or peaceful prayer.
No, for a pack, silence days meant mourning twice once to honor the human soul that was lost, and a second time to mourn the fierce wolf spirit that died alongside them.
And that was always the hardest part to bear... knowing that we had lost both parts of them. Two distinct spirits that were never going to return to us. Only after those quiet, painful days had passed could true healing finally begin to take root.
"And then," he added casually, tossing a slice of tomato onto his creation, "there is your upcoming birthday coming right up..."
My jaw dropped open slightly in sheer surprise. My birthday. In the middle of all this overwhelming pack chaos, I had completely forgotten that it was so close.
"You totally forgot about it, didn’t you?" Zahliver said with a knowing, teasing smirk, wagging a finger playfully in my direction. Amusement danced brightly in his striking, electric blue eyes.
"Yeah... I guess I did," I admitted with a soft sigh.
He abandoned the sandwich instantly, closing the small space between us in a single, lightning-fast heartbeat. His strong arms came up on either side of me, caging me in against the smooth surface of the counter with his hands braced firmly on the edge. Then he gently nudged my hips back with his own, pressing me softly but firmly into place so I had nowhere else to go.
My lips parted instinctively in a quiet gasp.
His handsome face lowered slowly toward mine, those electric blue eyes locking completely onto mine, smoldering with an intense heat that made my heart stutter hard against my ribs. A few loose strands of his midnight-black hair slipped forward across his forehead, framing his face in a way that made him look almost entirely too beautiful, too dangerous, and entirely too much to handle.
How was it even possible to fall harder and deeper for someone you already loved so completely? Because that was precisely what I was feeling right at that exact moment.
"I want to make you a special promise," he murmured, his voice dropping into a register that was deep, gravelly, and entirely hypnotic. "Do you want to hear it, my love?"
I realized right then that I was trembling just a tiny bit, though I knew for a fact it was not out of fear. Zahliver was not holding back his dominant aura tonight. He was radiating it outward in full force.
Pure dominance. Raw heat. Untamed hunger. Fierce devotion. It was a potent, powerful cocktail of sheer strength and boundless love that made my knees feel entirely weak beneath me.
"Yes," I whispered back, my voice barely audible over the hum of the kitchen refrigerator.
He reached up slowly and gently tucked a stray lock of soft hair behind my ear, his fingertips grazing my warm cheek in a featherlight touch. His hand dropped downward, but only to wrap securely around my waist, pulling my body flush against his.
"I am going to make damn sure your birthday is completely unforgettable," he promised, his voice sounding like warm velvet mixed with open fire. "You can always count on that, Vivian."
And looking into his eyes, I believed him. With every single fiber of my being, I truly believed him.
The days that followed were wrapped entirely in heavy silence and lingering sorrow. Dark black clothes, blurred, tear-filled eyes, and aching hearts filled every single waking moment. As the Alpha and Luna of the pack, Zahliver and I were naturally expected to be present at every single funeral service. Every last one of them. We stood shoulder-to-shoulder with grieving families for hours, offering quiet support, steady strength, and the kind of comforting presence that did not require fancy words.
And yet... Zahliver always managed to find the right words anyway. Beautiful, heartbreaking, and profoundly moving words.
At each solemn service, he spoke with a depth and a gentleness that consistently stunned me. I already knew he possessed a naturally commanding, terrifying presence when he wanted to, but the way he honored the fallen warriors how deeply and personally he seemed to remember each individual pack member left everyone around us absolutely breathless. Even me. More than once, I watched broken family members walk straight up to him after the ceremonies concluded, tearfully thanking him for remembering their lost loved one so intimately and truly.
Before I had met Zahliver and stepped into this pack life, funerals had never really been a major part of my personal world. Certainly not like this. I did not always know the proper things to say or do, and I often worried I did not know how to hold someone else’s immense pain without awkwardly making it feel worse. But it was during one of those particularly solemn processions that something entirely unexpected happened.
I accidentally ran into a group of kids. Literally.
It felt a lot like bumping into a bouncy pile of warm, wide-eyed puppies. At first, I simply thought it was a random coincidence, a silly fluke moment in the middle of a sad day. But then more and more of the younger pack children started hovering around my heels, trailing quietly behind me no matter where I walked in the courtyard. It felt as if someone had secretly flipped a magical switch over my head that clearly read, "She is the safe one."
And I swear on the moon that I tried my best to figure out how to switch it off.
They came in all shapes and sizes wobbly-footed toddlers, quiet-eyed five-year-olds who watched everything with intense curiosity, and even a few slightly older kids who looked like they still did not quite know what to do with their long arms and legs. I honestly felt like I was running a walking daycare center out in the open. And with Zahliver completely tied up handling the heavy ceremonial duties, I could not even find a good moment to pull him aside and whisper, "Hey, why do I suddenly have a dedicated fan club made entirely of tiny wolves?"
Deciding I needed to make some sense of the situation, I did what any responsible Luna-in-training naturally would do: I took charge of the tiny chaos.
I stopped walking, turned around on my heel, crouched down low to their eye level, and politely asked for all of their names and ages. I could not even lie to myself it was undeniably adorable. They responded in shy, halting whispers, treating me almost like I was some kind of magical creature they were not entirely sure they were allowed to touch. When I finally asked them directly why they had all decided to follow me around like little ducklings, I fully expected to hear a chorus of giggles or maybe just nervous silence.
Instead, I got the absolute, unvarnished truth from a little boy right in front.
"Because you are the leader," he stated matter-of-factly.
I blinked my eyes in absolute surprise, staring right back at him. "Okay, fair enough. But why not follow Zahliver around instead?"
They all just shrugged their shoulders in unison. Kids.
