The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 5: The Girl from House Frost
The announcement continued to echo through the valley.
"Welcome, Azeroth Veyr."
The voice faded slowly, leaving behind a silence far heavier than before.
Ethan Vale stood beside the ruined transportation array, staring at the distant towers of Eldoria Arcane Academy.
Every window in the capital had turned blue.
Magical barriers covered the city like transparent domes, each one layered over the other. The academy’s towers had awakened, their runes shining against the night sky. Even from this distance, Ethan could feel the enormous flow of mana beneath the city.
The academy was not simply protecting itself.
It was preparing for war.
Noah Blake was still pointing at Ethan.
"You told me your name was Ethan."
"It is."
"The voice called you Azeroth."
"Yes."
"You said you only had one name."
"I was mistaken."
Noah slowly lowered his hand.
"That is not how names work."
Ethan looked at him.
"Names change."
"Not usually from Ethan to the most feared villain in history!"
Elena Frost turned sharply.
"You knew?"
"No," Noah replied. "I am discovering this at the same time as you."
Elena’s silver eyes remained fixed on Ethan.
"Who are you?"
Ethan had been asked that question several times since awakening.
By Martha.
By the academy’s agents.
By himself.
He had never found the answer satisfactory.
"I am Ethan Vale."
Elena’s sword left its sheath with a quiet sound.
The mercenaries behind her immediately raised their weapons.
Noah took a step backward.
"I would like to point out that this is becoming a very uncomfortable conversation."
Elena did not look away from Ethan.
"The voice named you."
"Voices are often unreliable."
"That announcement was broadcast through every magical communication network in the capital."
"Then it was an unreliable announcement."
Elena’s expression hardened.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I do not particularly care what you believe."
That answer made the mercenaries tense.
Elena raised her sword.
Its blade was made of pale blue metal, covered with delicate frost-like patterns. Cold mist gathered around its edge.
"You are standing in the ruins of the Black Citadel. You activated an ancient transportation array. You carry an unknown magical mark. And the academy has just declared your return using the name of the most dangerous man in recorded history."
She stepped forward.
"Give me one reason not to kill you."
Ethan looked at the sword.
Then at Elena.
"You would not be able to."
Noah closed his eyes.
"Ethan."
"What?"
"That was not a reason."
"It was an accurate statement."
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
The air around her changed.
Mana gathered in the ruined tower, cold and sharp enough to make Ethan’s skin sting. Frost spread across the stones beneath her feet.
She was strong.
Stronger than Ethan had expected.
Her mana core was stable, dense, and refined. She had trained for years under the guidance of a powerful bloodline. Her control was excellent.
She was not yet a High Mage.
But she was close.
For someone her age, that was impressive.
Elena moved.
Her sword flashed toward Ethan’s throat.
He leaned to the side.
The blade passed within a finger’s width of his skin.
Ethan stepped inside her reach and struck the flat of her wrist.
Elena twisted with the impact, using his movement against him. Her shoulder struck his chest, and a burst of frost exploded between them.
Ethan was thrown backward.
He hit the stone wall hard enough to crack it.
Pain burst through his ribs.
Noah shouted:
"Are you all right?"
Ethan slid down the wall.
"No."
Elena advanced.
"Your body is weak."
"I know."
"You cannot control enough mana to defend yourself."
"I know."
"Then stop resisting."
Ethan wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.
"You speak too much."
Elena’s sword froze the air around it.
"This is not the time for arrogance."
"Arrogance is not dependent on timing."
She attacked again.
This time, Ethan did not try to block.
He watched.
The angle of her shoulders.
The position of her feet.
The rhythm of her breathing.
The spell hidden inside the movement of her blade.
Frost magic did not truly begin with cold.
It began with the removal of heat.
Elena’s sword was not creating ice. It was forcing the surrounding mana to surrender energy. That made the technique powerful, but also predictable.
Every spell had a principle.
Every principle had a weakness.
Elena struck.
Ethan waited.
At the last moment, he stepped toward her instead of away.
Her eyes widened.
He caught her sword arm with both hands and turned his body, redirecting the attack toward the ground.
The blade struck stone.
A wave of frost spread across the floor.
Ethan kicked the back of her knee.
Elena fell, but she twisted before hitting the ground. Her free hand touched the frozen stone.
A wall of ice erupted between them.
Ethan jumped backward as the wall rose.
The chamber filled with pale light.
When the ice cleared, Elena was standing again.
A thin cut marked her cheek.
She touched the blood with two fingers.
Her expression became colder than the spell around her.
Noah whispered:
"I think she is angry now."
"She was angry before."
"She looks more angry."
Ethan looked at Elena.
"She is improving."
"That is not what I meant."
Elena raised her sword.
The temperature dropped.
Every breath became visible.
Ethan’s damaged Mana Core reacted violently to the cold. Pain spread through his chest, and his vision blurred at the edges.
He could not win a prolonged battle.
His body would fail first.
He needed one decisive movement.
Elena disappeared behind a veil of frost.
Ethan closed his eyes.
The battlefield became sound.
A shift of air.
A footstep.
The soft crack of ice forming beneath his boot.
There.
Ethan moved before Elena emerged.
His hand struck her shoulder.
Not hard.
Just enough.
He released a thread of mana into her body, following the flow of her spell.
For one second, the frost around her collapsed.
Elena froze.
Ethan twisted her arm and removed the sword from her hand.
He held the blade against her throat.
The mercenaries raised their weapons.
Ethan’s gaze shifted toward them.
"Do not."
The tone of his voice was quiet.
It was not a threat.
It was an instruction.
The mercenaries stopped anyway.
Elena stared at him.
"How did you break my spell?"
"I interrupted the circulation."
"That technique is not taught in modern academies."
"I have read old books."
"You said that before."
"It remains true."
"You are lying."
"Frequently."
Noah stared at him.
"You cannot just admit that."
Ethan released Elena and tossed her sword onto the ground.
She caught it before it landed.
Instead of attacking again, she studied him.
"You could have killed me."
"Yes."
"Why didn’t you?"
Ethan glanced at the blood on his hand.
"Because I am tired."
Noah looked at him.
"That is the first honest thing you have said."
Before Ethan could answer, the ground shook again.
This time, the tremor was stronger.
The broken tower groaned.
A deep roar rose from beneath the ruins.
Elena turned toward the cracked floor.
"The seal is breaking."
"What seal?" Noah asked.
The stone beneath the transportation array split open.
Black energy spilled through the cracks and formed thin tendrils that crawled across the floor.
Ethan recognized the aura.
It was not Veyron’s.
It was not the Guardian’s.
This energy was more ancient.
More concentrated.
A fragment of his original authority had been buried beneath the ruins.
And it was waking because it had sensed him.
Elena looked at Ethan.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
"You activated the array."
"It was already damaged."
"You opened the seal."
"I opened three locks."
Noah turned toward him.
"You said nothing about locks."
"You did not ask."
The black tendrils reached the center of the chamber.
They gathered together and formed a thin, vertical line.
A door began to appear.
It was small at first.
Then it grew.
Black metal rose from the earth, covered in nine circular symbols. Eight of them were dark.
The ninth was glowing violet.
Ethan felt a pressure in his mind.
A voice spoke from behind the door.
Not in words.
In memory.
He saw a tower made of black glass.
He saw Veyron kneeling before him.
He saw nine keys placed on a stone altar.
He saw himself dividing his power into fragments.
Not because he had been defeated.
Because he had chosen to do it.
Ethan’s breath stopped.
The memory vanished.
He staggered backward.
Elena caught his arm before he fell.
Her hand was cold.
"What did you see?"
Ethan pulled away.
"Nothing."
"You are going to stop saying that."
"I doubt it."
The door opened.
A small object floated in the darkness beyond it.
It was a black crystal, no larger than a human heart.
Violet light pulsed inside its depths.
The moment Ethan saw it, his body moved forward without permission.
The crystal shot toward him.
Elena raised her sword.
"Stay back!"
The blade struck the crystal.
A violent shockwave threw everyone across the chamber.
Ethan crashed against a pillar.
The crystal fell to the ground.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the crystal began to crack.
Noah struggled to stand.
"What was that?"
Elena stared at the object.
"That thing reacted to him."
Ethan looked at the crystal.
A thin line had appeared across its surface.
Inside the crack, something was moving.
A black eye opened.
The crystal spoke.
"Authority recognized."
The voice was mechanical, ancient, and completely emotionless.
"Fragment designation: Crown."
"Compatibility confirmed."
"Vessel identification: incomplete."
"Reconstruction sequence beginning."
Ethan’s damaged core erupted.
He fell to one knee.
Black lines spread across his neck and face.
His vision filled with fire.
Power flooded into him.
Not all of it.
Not even a fraction of what he had once possessed.
But it was enough to make the world tremble.
The stone beneath his hand shattered.
The magic in the chamber bent toward him.
His shadow stretched across the floor, growing taller and darker until it formed the outline of a crowned figure.
Elena raised her sword again.
Noah took several steps backward.
"Ethan?"
Ethan could not answer.
The black crystal dissolved into his chest.
A violent pressure exploded through his Mana Core.
The damaged core began to repair itself.
Cracks sealed.
Mana pathways widened.
His body screamed as it tried to contain the foreign power.
He saw memories that did not belong to him.
Veyron standing beside a black throne.
Azeroth speaking to an army.
A city burning beneath a purple sky.
A woman with golden eyes placing a hand over his heart.
A voice saying:
"If you ever return, you must not trust the crown."
Then another memory.
A white-robed mage cutting the woman down.
Ethan opened his eyes.
The violet light disappeared.
He was kneeling in the center of the ruined chamber.
The black crystal was gone.
The mark on his wrist had changed.
It was no longer a simple ring.
A small crown-shaped symbol had appeared inside it.
His breathing was steady.
His body felt different.
Still weak.
Still damaged.
But something had changed.
His mana was no longer scattered.
It moved through his pathways with the faintest hint of obedience.
Elena watched him with fear and fascination.
"What are you?"
Ethan stood.
He looked at his hands.
Then he looked at the door.
"I do not know yet."
The door closed.
The remaining eight symbols went dark.
Above them, a loud explosion echoed through the ruins.
The academy agents had reached the tower.
The masked mage’s voice sounded from outside.
"Ethan Vale! Step away from the sealed chamber!"
Elena looked toward the entrance.
"They followed us."
"No," Ethan said.
He looked at the black door.
"They followed the crystal."
The ruined tower shook as a spell struck the outer wall.
Stone collapsed.
The mercenaries moved toward the entrance.
Elena lifted her sword.
"We cannot fight the academy here."
"No."
"Then what do we do?"
Ethan turned toward her.
"Go to the academy."
Elena stared at him.
"You heard the announcement. They are hunting you."
"They are also guarding the entrance to the Black Citadel."
"That is not a reason to walk into a trap."
"It is the reason I need."
Noah rubbed his injured arm.
"I feel as though I should object."
"You should."
"Will it change anything?"
"No."
"Then I object emotionally."
Another explosion struck the tower.
A large section of the wall collapsed.
The masked mage appeared through the dust, followed by several academy guards.
His silver mask was cracked, revealing one cold blue eye.
He looked directly at Ethan.
Then his gaze fell to the crown-shaped mark on Ethan’s wrist.
For the first time, the man showed fear.
"The Crown Fragment," he whispered.
The woman with the silver staff stepped beside him.
Her eyes widened.
"He has absorbed it."
The masked mage raised his hand.
"All units, formation—"
Ethan moved.
He did not cast a spell.
He simply stepped forward and released a small amount of pressure from his Mana Core.
The chamber went silent.
Every spell circle collapsed.
Every torch went out.
The academy guards fell to their knees.
The masked mage staggered backward.
Ethan looked at his hand.
The amount of power he had used was insignificant.
A spark.
A single breath of authority.
Yet the result was enough to make trained mages lose control of their spells.
Ethan smiled faintly.
His old power was returning.
Slowly.
Painfully.
But it was returning.
The masked mage forced himself to stand.
"What are you planning to do?"
Ethan walked past him.
"Attend school."
Noah followed immediately.
Elena hesitated, then picked up her sword and moved after them.
The masked mage watched the three students leave the ruins.
He did not try to stop them.
He was too busy sending a message through the academy’s communication crystal.
The message contained only five words:
**The Crown has chosen its vessel.**
Far beneath Eldoria Arcane Academy, inside a chamber sealed for one thousand years, another crystal began to glow.
Then another.
Then another.
Across the hidden foundations of the academy, eight ancient fragments awakened one after the other.
And from the deepest chamber beneath the central tower, a woman opened her golden eyes.
She smiled.
"The first one has returned."
