The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 36: The First Sovereign
The heartbeat echoed beneath the battlefield.
Once.
Twice.
Then a third time.
Every soldier heard it.
Every Mana Core responded.
The ground beneath the Royal Warfront split open, revealing a deep violet light. It did not rise like fire or spread like magic.
It pulsed.
The fourth heartbeat shook the valley.
Several soldiers fell to their knees.
The fifth cracked the ancient gate.
The sixth silenced every remaining magical crystal.
Ethan Vale stood at the center of the battlefield, supported by Elena Frost. His Mana Core was almost empty, and the fragments inside him remained silent after the battle with the creature beyond the First Door.
Yet he could feel something below.
Something older than the fragments.
Older than the First Door.
Older than the kingdoms built upon the world.
Noah Blake stared at the widening crack.
"I have an important question."
Ethan looked at him.
"What?"
"Why does the ground have a heartbeat?"
"No idea."
"That is not the answer I wanted."
"It is the honest one."
Veyron stood before the broken gate, his expression drained of color.
He had recognized the presence beneath them.
Ethan noticed.
"You know what it is."
Veyron did not answer.
"Veyron."
The former heir looked toward the crack.
"The First Sovereign."
The words spread through the battlefield.
Professor Aurelia Voss stepped closer.
"The being whose remains were used to create the first vessel?"
Veyron nodded.
"The original source of the fragments."
Ethan looked at his empty hand.
"The First Sovereign is alive?"
"Not completely."
"What does that mean?"
"It means its body is dead."
The heartbeat returned.
The violet light beneath the ground grew stronger.
"But its will remained."
Elena’s grip tightened around her sword.
"Where?"
Veyron looked at Ethan.
"Inside the world."
A cold silence settled over the soldiers.
Ethan felt the remaining fragments respond faintly.
The Crown gave a weak pulse.
The Witness opened for an instant.
Knowledge showed him a vision.
A black heart floating beneath the earth.
Connected to every Mana Core.
Connected to every fragment.
Connected to him.
Then the vision disappeared.
"The First Sovereign is not beneath the battlefield," Ethan said.
Veyron looked at him.
"It is inside the magical network."
Professor Voss’s expression hardened.
"Every Mana Core."
"Yes."
"The same network the Observer tried to use."
"Yes."
"Then the First Sovereign was never sleeping."
Veyron shook his head.
"It was waiting."
The ground erupted.
Violet energy shot into the sky and formed a massive circle above the battlefield. Inside the circle appeared a symbol none of them recognized.
It resembled a crown without a head.
Beneath it, a line of ancient writing appeared.
The Knowledge Fragment translated it inside Ethan’s mind:
**THE CREATOR RETURNS TO CLAIM ITS CREATION.**
The soldiers began shouting.
Some tried to flee.
Others reached for their weapons.
The Eighth Fragment stirred inside Ethan, responding to the fear spreading across the battlefield.
The red energy threatened to return.
Ethan forced himself to stand.
"Everyone, remain calm."
His voice was weak, but it carried.
Noah looked at him.
"You sound like someone who has a plan."
"I do not."
"That is less reassuring than usual."
Ethan turned toward the soldiers.
"Do not use magic unless necessary. The First Sovereign is connected to your Mana Cores."
A soldier shouted:
"Then what are we supposed to do?"
"Stay alive."
"That is not a strategy!"
"It is the first step."
The violet circle above the battlefield began to rotate.
Each turn caused another wave of pressure to pass through the soldiers.
Mages dropped their weapons and clutched their chests.
Several Mana Cores began to crack.
Ethan felt the damage through the shared network.
The First Sovereign was not attacking them.
It was testing its connection.
The same way someone might move their fingers after waking from a long sleep.
Professor Voss cast a red barrier around the wounded.
The spell appeared, but the violet energy immediately began flowing through it.
She broke the spell herself.
"It is using every magical structure as a passage."
Ethan looked toward the broken gate.
"Then we need to cut the passage."
"The Sword is empty."
"I know."
"The fragments are not responding."
"I know."
"Ethan, that is not a minor problem."
"I am aware."
Elena turned toward him.
"Can you call them back?"
"Not while the First Sovereign is connected to the network."
"Then how do we fight it?"
Ethan looked at the violet symbol.
"We do not fight it with magic."
Veyron understood first.
"We disconnect the world."
Ethan nodded.
Professor Voss stared at them.
"You cannot sever every Mana Core from the network."
"Not every one."
"If you cut the central connection, every mage may lose access to magic permanently."
"Better than allowing the First Sovereign to control them."
Veyron’s expression became grim.
"You do not understand what you are suggesting."
"I understand exactly."
"Magic is not only power. It is the foundation of the world."
"The First Door was also the foundation of the world."
"And destroying it nearly killed everything."
"Then we do not destroy the network."
Ethan looked toward the violet circle.
"We isolate it."
Veyron’s eyes narrowed.
"From what?"
"From the First Sovereign."
The ground shook again.
A figure began forming inside the violet light.
At first, it looked like a human silhouette.
Then it grew.
Its shoulders rose above the clouds.
Its body was made from streams of Mana.
Its face remained incomplete.
No eyes.
No mouth.
Only a smooth surface of violet light.
The First Sovereign was not emerging from the earth.
It was creating a temporary body through the network.
Ethan felt the Identity Fragment react.
The creature did not have a stable identity.
That was its weakness.
Before the First Sovereign could complete its shape, Ethan needed to force it into one form.
A name.
A definition.
A boundary.
But the Seventh Fragment was still weak from the City of Ash.
Ethan could barely feel it.
Elena stepped beside him.
"Tell me what you need."
Ethan looked at her.
"Your Frost bloodline."
Her expression tightened.
"You said the contract was broken."
"It was."
"Then what do you need from it?"
"The original Frost seal can create a boundary around the battlefield."
"My family lost control of it."
"Not completely."
Elena looked toward the violet circle.
"What would it cost?"
"Your blood."
She stared at him.
"That sounds like a contract."
"It is a choice."
"Would it bind me to the First Sovereign?"
"No."
"Would it bind me to you?"
"No."
"Then how do I know you are telling the truth?"
Ethan met her gaze.
"You do not."
Elena studied him for a long moment.
Then she drew her sword across her palm.
Blood fell onto the ground.
"I choose."
The blood touched the ash.
Frost spread outward.
It moved in a perfect circle around the battlefield, covering the ground in silver ice.
The violet energy struck the boundary.
The ice cracked, but it held.
The First Sovereign’s half-formed body stopped growing.
Veyron stared at Elena.
"The Frost seal was never meant to contain something that powerful."
"It does not need to contain it forever," Ethan said.
"How long?"
"Long enough."
Professor Voss looked at him.
"Long enough for what?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
The fragments were silent.
But they were still inside him.
He reached for the Crown.
Nothing.
He reached for the Witness.
Nothing.
Knowledge.
Silence.
Sword.
Silence.
Identity.
A faint response.
Not power.
Recognition.
Ethan understood.
The fragments had not abandoned him.
They were waiting for him to call them without forcing them.
He had spent his first life commanding power.
Now he needed to ask.
Ethan placed his hand over his heart.
"I need your help."
The Crown pulsed.
The Witness answered.
Knowledge opened.
The Sword trembled.
The White Flame responded from far away, through Princess Lyra.
The Sixth Prison stirred in the north.
The Seventh Fragment formed a silver line.
The Eighth released a faint crimson spark.
The Ninth marks inside the soldiers glowed.
The fragments did not return to Ethan as weapons.
They connected to him as choices.
The violet body above the battlefield turned toward him.
A voice entered every mind.
**You are my creation.**
Ethan looked up.
"I am not your property."
**Your soul was made from my essence.**
"I am not my origin."
**Your power belongs to me.**
"I choose what it becomes."
The faceless figure extended one hand.
Every Mana Core in the battlefield lit up.
The Frost boundary began to collapse.
Soldiers screamed.
The First Sovereign was trying to reclaim the fragments through the network.
Ethan felt the pressure enter his body.
It reached for the Crown.
The Witness.
Knowledge.
The Sword.
The Identity.
Each fragment resisted.
But Ethan’s Mana Core could not hold the pressure alone.
He looked at the soldiers.
The Ninth Fragment had left a mark in every person who had accepted the Sword’s sacrifice.
They were connected to the fragments now.
Not as vessels.
As witnesses.
Ethan raised his voice.
"Remember your names!"
The soldiers looked toward him.
"Remember the choice you made at the warfront!"
One soldier placed a hand over the black mark on his palm.
"My name is Rowan Hale."
Another followed.
"Alina Dervane."
"Marcus Thorn."
"Selene Arkwright."
Names spread across the battlefield.
Each one strengthened the boundary.
The First Sovereign’s body flickered.
It could not claim people who recognized themselves as separate from it.
Ethan felt the Identity Fragment growing stronger.
The faceless figure raised its hand.
**You are fragments of me.**
Ethan answered:
"We are people."
The Crown awakened.
Violet light spread through the silver ice.
The Witness revealed the original connection.
Knowledge translated its structure.
The Sword formed a thin black line.
Ethan saw the central thread.
It connected the First Sovereign to the magical network.
But it was not a single thread.
It was made from billions of individual choices.
Every spell.
Every Mana Core.
Every person who had accepted magic.
If Ethan cut it directly, the world would lose magic.
He needed to convince the network to reject the Sovereign.
The Ninth Fragment offered the answer.
Consequences belonged to those who made choices.
The First Sovereign had created magic.
But it had not created every choice made by those who used it.
Ethan extended the Ninth mark through the network.
He did not command the people.
He showed them the truth.
The First Sovereign was their origin.
Not their owner.
The network began to separate.
Violet lines broke away from the main structure.
Mages across the battlefield felt the connection loosening.
The First Sovereign’s body began to collapse.
For the first time, it displayed an emotion.
Confusion.
**You cannot separate creation from creator.**
Ethan raised the black sword.
"No."
He cut the central thread.
"You can separate ownership from origin."
The blade struck.
The violet circle shattered.
The First Sovereign’s body broke apart into thousands of lights.
The lights fell across the battlefield like rain.
Every soldier’s Mana Core dimmed.
Then stabilized.
The Frost boundary collapsed.
Elena fell to one knee.
Ethan caught her before she hit the ground.
Her palm was still bleeding.
"Did it work?" she asked.
Ethan looked at the sky.
The violet signal had disappeared.
"The connection is severed."
"Is magic gone?"
Ethan looked toward Professor Voss.
She raised her hand.
A small red flame appeared above her palm.
Weak.
But alive.
"Not completely."
Veyron looked toward the soldiers.
"The First Sovereign has lost direct control."
Ethan looked at him.
"Direct control?"
Veyron’s expression remained grim.
"It was never alone."
The last violet light above the battlefield formed a small symbol.
A black heart surrounded by a silver circle.
The First Sovereign’s consciousness had been pushed out of the network.
But it had not been destroyed.
It had been forced into one place.
A single vessel.
Ethan felt its location immediately.
Not beneath the battlefield.
Not inside the magical network.
Inside a human body.
Ethan turned toward the soldiers.
One person stood apart from the others.
Captain Rowan Hale.
The captain’s eyes were normal.
His body showed no signs of corruption.
But a violet mark had appeared over his heart.
Ethan walked toward him.
Rowan looked down at the mark.
"What is that?"
Ethan did not answer.
The mark opened.
A voice entered the battlefield.
**A vessel has been chosen.**
Rowan’s body stiffened.
The soldiers raised their weapons.
Ethan stepped between them.
"Do not attack him."
The violet mark spread across Rowan’s chest.
His eyes turned silver.
He looked at Ethan.
For a moment, Rowan’s voice remained his own.
"Ethan..."
Then another voice spoke through him.
**You cannot disconnect what is already inside the world.**
Ethan raised the black sword.
The First Sovereign had found a body.
And it had chosen someone who had willingly followed Ethan into war.
Rowan’s expression changed.
The violet light consumed his face.
The battlefield fell silent.
The First Sovereign looked at Ethan through Rowan’s eyes.
**You were created to be my successor.**
The black heart over Rowan’s chest pulsed.
**Now prove that you deserve to be free.**
The ground beneath the battlefield opened.
A new Door appeared.
Not in the sky.
Not beneath the earth.
Inside Rowan’s body.
And Ethan realized the First Sovereign had not been trying to return to the world.
It had been waiting for the world to choose a vessel for it.
