The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 15: The Hidden Academy
Falling through darkness was not as peaceful as Ethan Vale had expected.
For the first few seconds, there was no sensation of movement. No wind. No sound. Only darkness pressed against his body from every direction.
Then gravity remembered him.
Ethan dropped faster.
His coat snapped violently around him, and the air tore at his face. Somewhere above, students were screaming. A desk passed beside him, spinning end over end before disappearing into the darkness below.
"Ethan!"
Noah Blake’s voice came from somewhere to his left.
Ethan turned his head.
Noah was falling upside down, clutching a broken piece of the classroom door with both hands.
"You picked a terrible time to learn how to fly!" Ethan shouted.
"I am not flying!"
"You are moving through the air."
"That is falling!"
"Then fall more quietly."
Noah opened his mouth to answer, but a large wooden desk struck him from behind.
He vanished into the darkness.
Ethan sighed.
Then something wrapped around his ankle.
A thin silver thread tightened around his leg and stopped his fall.
His body jerked violently.
Pain shot through his chest.
Below him, a pale blue light appeared.
It was not the light of a crystal.
It was the glow of thousands of magical symbols carved into the walls of a vast underground shaft.
The shaft was enormous.
It extended far below the academy, wider than the central tower and deep enough to contain an entire city. Bridges crossed the darkness at different heights, connecting floating platforms and ancient stone structures.
The hidden academy had not been buried beneath Eldoria.
It had been built inside the earth.
Ethan twisted in the air.
The silver thread connected his ankle to a figure standing on one of the bridges.
Caelan Rook.
The masked student raised one hand.
The silver thread pulled Ethan toward the bridge.
Ethan struck the stone railing and rolled across the ground.
A second later, Noah landed beside him with a loud crash.
He remained motionless for three seconds.
Then he raised one finger.
"I am beginning to dislike this academy."
Ethan stood and looked over the railing.
Far below, dozens of students were falling toward different platforms. Some had activated barriers. Others were clinging to pieces of furniture. A few had already landed safely on the lower bridges.
Professor Aurelia Voss descended slowly through the air, surrounded by a red magical aura.
She landed beside Ethan with surprising grace.
Unlike the students, she appeared more annoyed than frightened.
"What did you do?" she asked.
Ethan looked at Caelan.
"I attended class."
Caelan stood on the opposite side of the bridge.
His silver mask reflected the blue light below. The old academy uniform he wore moved slightly, although there was no wind.
"You did not do anything," Caelan said. "The classroom recognized you."
Professor Voss raised her staff.
"The classroom is not supposed to recognize anyone."
"It remembers its master."
"I am not asking you."
Caelan turned his masked face toward her.
"I know."
Professor Voss’s eyes narrowed.
A red circle formed beneath her feet.
Flames gathered around the staff.
Ethan raised one hand.
"Do not attack him."
"He just threw an entire class into an underground ruin."
"He did not throw us."
"That is a very generous interpretation."
Caelan stepped closer.
"The descent was necessary."
"For what?" Professor Voss demanded.
Caelan looked at Ethan.
"For his first lesson."
Noah slowly stood.
"Why does everyone keep calling him that?"
"Calling him what?" Ethan asked.
"Master."
"It is an old title."
"From when?"
Ethan paused.
"Another time."
Noah stared at him.
"That answer has become less convincing every time you use it."
Ethan ignored him.
He looked across the bridge.
The hidden academy stretched in every direction. Towers of black stone rose from the darkness, connected by suspended paths. Enormous crystal spheres floated above the buildings, each one containing a slow-moving image of a different scene.
Some showed ancient battles.
Others displayed magical formulas.
One showed a city Ethan recognized.
The old capital of the Ashen Empire.
It had been destroyed during the Final War.
Seeing it intact made something unpleasant move inside his chest.
The Crown Fragment pulsed.
The Witness stirred.
A memory surfaced.
Azeroth walking through the capital while thousands of people bowed.
A younger Caelan following him with a stack of books.
"You cannot keep teaching me forbidden magic," Caelan had said.
"You cannot keep asking for it."
"I am not asking. I am researching."
"You are eight years old."
"I am an exceptional eight-year-old."
Ethan almost smiled.
Then the memory changed.
The city burned.
Caelan stood in the street, surrounded by corpses.
Ethan had left him there.
The memory disappeared.
Caelan watched him carefully.
"You remember."
"Some of it."
"Enough to know why you came here."
"I did not choose this place."
"You chose it a thousand years ago."
Ethan turned toward him.
"What is this?"
Caelan lifted one hand.
The symbols carved into the bridge began to glow.
"This is the first Eldoria Arcane Academy."
Professor Voss looked around.
"The original academy was destroyed during the Final War."
"That is what the modern records say," Caelan replied.
"Then the records are wrong."
"They are not wrong. The original academy was destroyed above ground."
He pointed toward the towers below.
"This part was never meant to be found."
Noah leaned over the railing.
"How large is this place?"
"Large enough."
"That is not an answer."
"Most ancient people disliked precise measurements."
"They also seem to dislike clear explanations."
Ethan looked at the nearest tower.
A black symbol was carved above its entrance.
He knew it.
It had once marked the **Hall of Origins**, where he had taught his most trusted students how to examine the principles behind magic.
The modern academy’s most advanced department had been built over it.
The old hall was still intact.
The Third Fragment was connected to this place.
"What does the fragment do?" Ethan asked.
Caelan turned toward him.
"It remembers."
"The Witness already remembers."
"The Witness remembers what you did."
Caelan pointed toward the towers.
"The Third Fragment remembers what you taught."
Ethan remained silent.
Caelan continued:
"When the old academy was destroyed, the fragment stored the knowledge of every student, professor, and spell created here. It preserved their lessons, their mistakes, and their deaths."
Professor Voss studied the glowing buildings.
"You are saying this entire structure is a memory?"
"Not entirely."
"What is real?"
Caelan tilted his head.
"That depends on which laws you trust."
Noah looked at Ethan.
"Do you understand him?"
"Some of it."
"Could you explain?"
"No."
Noah sighed.
"Of course."
A loud bell rang throughout the hidden academy.
The sound did not travel through the air.
It passed through the stone itself.
Every floating crystal turned toward Ethan.
The images inside them changed.
Thousands of faces appeared.
Students from a thousand years ago.
They stood in classrooms, walked through corridors, practiced spells, and fought in training halls.
Then all of them turned toward Ethan at once.
A voice echoed through the underground structure.
**The master has returned.**
The students on the lower platforms stopped moving.
Professor Voss looked up.
"Did the entire academy just speak?"
"Yes," Caelan answered.
"Can it stop?"
"No."
"That is going to be a problem."
A second voice followed the first.
**The king has returned.**
The Crown Fragment burned.
The air around Ethan became heavy.
Several students on the distant platforms fell to their knees without understanding why.
Noah grabbed the railing.
"What is happening to him?"
Professor Voss looked at Ethan’s chest.
"His mana is rising."
"It is not mana," Ethan said.
He could feel the hidden academy responding to his authority.
The ancient structure was not merely recognizing him.
It was offering control.
The Third Fragment wanted him to claim the academy.
Every spell, every door, every memory inside it could become his.
That was how the old academy had worked.
It had been more than a school.
It had been a magical domain.
Azeroth had ruled it through the authority of the Crown.
The Third Fragment was trying to restore that connection.
Caelan stepped forward.
"Accept the academy."
Ethan looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because it belongs to you."
"It belongs to the dead."
"It belongs to whoever has the strength to command it."
"That is exactly the problem."
Caelan’s mask tilted slightly.
"You are afraid."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
"Of what?"
"Of becoming yourself again."
Noah looked at him.
The accusation struck more deeply than Ethan expected.
Caelan continued:
"You think refusing power makes you different. You think caring about these students will make you human. But when the next threat appears, you will use the same methods."
Ethan’s hand tightened.
The academy responded.
Black light began to spread across the bridge.
The symbols under his feet formed a crown.
Professor Voss took a step backward.
"Ethan, stop."
"I am not doing this."
The voice beneath the academy whispered:
**Claim.**
The Third Fragment pushed memories into his mind.
Ethan saw himself standing in the Hall of Origins.
Hundreds of students knelt before him.
Caelan was at his side.
The academy obeyed his command.
Every door opened.
Every spell became available.
Every enemy outside the walls was helpless.
It was power without resistance.
Order without rebellion.
A perfect kingdom beneath the world.
The Crown Fragment urged him to accept.
The Witness showed him the cost.
The students who knelt were not loyal.
They were afraid.
Their obedience was only another form of imprisonment.
Ethan closed his eyes.
"No."
The symbols beneath him flickered.
Caelan remained still.
"You reject your own academy?"
"I reject the way it is offering itself."
"What other way is there?"
Ethan opened his eyes.
"Permission."
The academy fell silent.
The black light stopped spreading.
Ethan placed his hand against the bridge.
"I will not claim this place."
The Crown Fragment resisted.
The Third Fragment pulsed.
Ethan forced both powers into submission.
"I will not rule it."
The ancient towers trembled.
"I will not use its students as soldiers."
The floating crystals began to crack.
"I will not turn memory into obedience."
The crown symbol beneath him shattered.
A shockwave moved through the hidden academy.
The glowing images inside the crystals changed.
The students of the past stopped kneeling.
One by one, they stood.
Some looked toward Ethan.
Some looked away.
Then the voices disappeared.
The academy no longer offered him control.
It offered him access.
A single door opened inside the Hall of Origins.
Caelan watched in silence.
Professor Voss lowered her staff.
Noah stared at Ethan.
"What exactly did you just do?"
"I refused."
"That is all?"
"It was enough."
A scream echoed from below.
The students on the lower platforms began running.
A large black creature emerged from one of the ancient halls. It had the body of a wolf, the wings of a bat, and a face covered by a porcelain mask.
More creatures followed.
They poured from the old academy in dozens.
Their bodies were made of black smoke and silver bones.
Professor Voss raised her staff.
"Everyone, prepare for combat!"
The students formed scattered groups.
Some created barriers.
Others drew weapons.
The creatures rushed across the bridges.
Caelan looked at Ethan.
"The fragment has awakened the academy’s guardians."
"Are they supposed to attack the students?"
"They are testing them."
"That is a poor teaching method."
"It was considered effective."
"By whom?"
"You."
Ethan looked at the approaching creatures.
The first guardian leaped onto the bridge.
Professor Voss launched a wave of fire.
The creature passed through it and continued forward.
Adrian intercepted it with his sword.
The impact drove him backward.
Elena raised a wall of ice between the creature and the nearest students.
Noah stood behind the barrier, holding his dull knife.
He looked at Ethan.
"Do you have another plan?"
"Yes."
"Is it a good one?"
"Probably not."
"That is becoming a pattern."
Ethan stepped toward the guardian.
The creature lowered its head.
Its porcelain mask split open, revealing a violet eye.
The eye recognized him.
The creature stopped.
Then it knelt.
Every guardian on the surrounding platforms stopped at the same time.
One by one, they bowed toward Ethan.
The students fell silent.
Caelan spoke softly.
"They remember you."
Ethan looked at the kneeling creatures.
He remembered them too.
They had once been students.
Not all of them.
But many.
During the Final War, the academy had transformed its strongest students into guardians to protect the Hall of Origins.
They had died defending the place.
The Third Fragment had preserved them.
Now they were waiting for his command.
A command Ethan could give with one word.
Destroy.
The guardians lifted their heads.
The students watched him.
Noah’s grip tightened around his knife.
"What are you going to do?"
Ethan looked at the ancient creatures.
Then at the frightened students.
"Stand down."
The command carried the Crown’s authority.
The guardians obeyed.
Their bodies dissolved into silver dust.
The dust rose into the air and returned to the floating crystals.
The students remained frozen.
Professor Voss stared at Ethan.
"You controlled them."
"I stopped them."
"You could have made them fight for you."
"Yes."
"Why didn’t you?"
Ethan looked toward the Hall of Origins.
"Because they already fought enough."
Caelan lowered his head.
For the first time, he did not look like a memory.
He looked like a student.
A tired, grieving student who had waited too long for his teacher to return.
"The lesson is complete," he said.
The hidden academy began to fade.
Towers dissolved into light.
Bridges became transparent.
The walls turned into drifting symbols.
The students cried out as the ground beneath them disappeared.
Noah grabbed Ethan’s arm.
"Please tell me this is part of the plan."
"It is not."
"Excellent."
The world turned white.
Ethan felt himself being pulled upward.
The Third Fragment entered his chest.
It did not merge completely.
Instead, it settled behind the Crown and the Witness, forming a third light inside his damaged Mana Core.
Three fragments.
Three different authorities.
Command.
Memory.
Knowledge.
The golden mark over his heart pulsed.
The Observer remained silent.
But Ethan felt its attention sharpen.
Then the hidden academy vanished.
Ethan opened his eyes.
He was lying on the floor of Classroom One.
Broken desks were scattered around him.
The windows were cracked.
Professor Voss was kneeling nearby.
Noah lay on top of a pile of books.
Adrian had landed beside the blackboard.
Elena was standing, though one hand was pressed against her shoulder.
The rest of the students were slowly waking.
The classroom looked as though it had been hit by a storm.
Outside, the academy appeared normal.
No time had passed.
The bell for the next lesson had not even rung.
Noah lifted his head.
"Did we win?"
Ethan sat up.
"The lesson ended."
"That was not my question."
Caelan Rook stood at the back of the classroom.
Only Ethan could see him now.
The ancient student bowed.
"Until the next lesson, Master."
Then he faded into the wall.
Professor Voss watched Ethan’s face.
"You saw him again."
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
"Nothing important."
She did not believe him.
Neither did Noah.
Beneath the classroom, the golden eye closed.
The Third Fragment was quiet.
But a new message appeared on the cracked blackboard.
It was written in violet letters.
**THREE FRAGMENTS AWAKENED.**
**SIX REMAIN.**
Underneath it, a final sentence appeared.
**THE KING HAS REFUSED THE CROWN.**
Far away, beneath the central tower, someone read the message.
Seraphina Crow closed her eyes.
For the first time in a thousand years, she smiled with genuine relief.
Then a second message appeared beneath the first.
**THE OBSERVER HAS NOT.**
Seraphina’s smile disappeared.
Outside the academy, the sky darkened.
And beyond the world, something began to move.
