The Villainess Is My Cute Daughter
Chapter 309: Your Job For This War
They didn’t have internal stoves that were inside their houses because those emitted a massive amount of smoke when they burned cheap firewood, and proper chimneys were too complicated and expensive for commoners to build. So it was much easier to just cook outside in the open, and this setup was exactly the same.
Adrian briefly looked around to see that the soldiers had already started eating the sludge.
And he could clearly see that while they didn’t complain out loud, they definitely didn’t exactly look satisfied or happy. They just ate it to survive. But that was the harsh reality of a medieval war. Good rations were incredibly hard to come by, transport aand store for a long time without having them spoil.
But that would completely change right now thanks to Adrian’s monopoly.
He looked down at the crude fire pits and kicked all of the uneven rocks away.
And instead of having multiple small, highly inefficient fire pits, he covered the whole thing up. He filled the small holes that the previous soldiers had made with loose soil. And he firmly pressed it down with his boots so that the ground looked completely even and flat again.
And once all of this leveling was perfectly done, he telekinesis, formed an invisible shovel and cleanly dug up two large, deep fire pits on one side of the new tent.
And then he efficiently dug a sort of long, straight line that looked like a trench, or a mini-trench of sorts, on the other side of the tent.
He then pulled out two perfectly chiseled, square stones . He placed two chiseled stones securely on each end of the long trench before he brought out a massive, flat plate from his dungeon which was basically made of pure, heavy steel.
It was a massive rectangle, and it sat directly on top of the trench perfectly like a modern griddle.
The two chiseled stones supported it securely on the edges. But at the dead center, the steel plate sagged down a little bit under its own weight. It was a very minute level of sag, but it still definitely sagged down.
But Adrian had already expected something like this to happen so what he did next was, he brought out exactly three more identical square stones from his dungeon storage. He neatly stuffed all of them in a perfectly straight line, making a sturdy support tower right at the exact center of the trench.
The height of the stone tower perfectly fit the gap to the point where the top of the tower easily held the heavy steel plate up without it sagging even a single millimeter.
Adrian nodded in satisfaction as he looked at this massive flat top grill.
Then he looked back at the two large, deep fire pits that he made on the other side. He took the smooth stones that he had just tossed to the side; the exact ones which the other soldiers had originally used, and he neatly placed them in a tight circle around the two fireplaces to to support the pots.
Adrian slowly walked over to his army that was stationed nearby, and he just silently looked at them.
He had, in fact, brought almost exactly 80% of his entire military force and only left 20% back in Oresfall.
And the reason for this sort of plan was pretty simple. It was because the 20% he left back home were equipped with his magic rifles in case things just went wrong. And two thousand trained men with magical rifles and high ground advantage which came with standing on top of the walls, could do an insane amount of damage even against massive armies that had ten times more men.
It was mostly due to the sheer intimidation factor of just killing people at an impossibly long range before they even got close to the walls, and the enemy knights not even being able to see what hit them. That psychological factor alone would be more than enough to completely mess up the minds of most armies.
Adrian looked out at his men and he spoke up.
"I need volunteers."
As he said that, he turned his head to casually look at the other allied armies scattered across the valley. He saw that the other armies were mixed up and talking to each other, resting on the grass, and just doing their own thing. And meanwhile, the nobles were sitting in their lavish tents eating their own so-called premium food.
Adrian looked at all of this, and then he turned back to look at his soldiers. And since no one from the other camps was actually looking at them or listening to them right now; or at least not a massive bunch of people, Adrian didn’t really mind if there were two or three hidden spies just eavesdropping on him because it didn’t exactly matter.
He looked back at his loyal soldiers and raised his voice slightly.
"I want exactly thirty of you guys to step forward and help me in the kitchen."
He pointed out towards the sprawling camp.
"And as for the rest of you, I want you to go around the entire camp and talk to the other men here. Talk to the other soldiers, and I want you to bring me accurate information about what exactly is going on in this war right now. And then I will tell you what to do next based on that intel."
Adrian crossed his arms.
"During this massive war, your job isn’t to fight in the frontlines. A large part of your job is to sit back here and to make that the injured allied soldiers aren’t completely hopeless and left to rot. I want a dedicated group of you guys to specifically learn how to help the military doctors, and learn how first-aid works."
He gestured to the woman standing nearby.
"Celeste will teach you what first-aid is and everything else. She will be your primary mentor during this whole thing and of course, there are going to be other, older apothecaries here too, so do learn from everyone and be respectful."
