Chapter 596: Maths and Decision

"What’s this?"

"I don’t know what it that."

"So what do you know?"

’That you’re shorter than me.’ That was what Amon wanted to say to Professor Aria, the very same woman who had laughed at him during their first class last year.

Currently, the class was in full swing. Aria, a woman who excelled in magic, was teaching them how to represent and manipulate magic through mathematical equations.

For heaven’s sake, Amon didn’t understand a single damn thing. And now, this woman wanted him to solve one of the equations.

He stared at the blackboard again, and he was completely baffled.

He couldn’t understand why they needed to learn magic through mathematics in the first place. He already knew several spells, and none of them had required him to sit down and solve complicated equations.

Still, after looking at the equations for a while, even Amon could understand that this knowledge was probably important for things like magical architecture and artifact creation.

’Damn... Are dwarves also good at mathematics?’

"Boy? What are you thinking so deeply about?"

"Well, are dwarves good at math?"

Aria stared at him. She blinked at him.

"HAHAHA!"

She burst into laughter, grabbing the brim of her witch hat as she laughed loudly. "Oh, goddess! Amon, you always know how to entertain me!"

Amon’s lips twitched. He really wanted to curse this woman. Unfortunately, she was his professor, so he had to endure it.

The entire class had turned their attention toward them. A few students laughed along with Aria, while others watched the exchange like it was some kind of entertaining show.

A few, however, looked nervous. They clearly didn’t want Aria to notice them and call them to the board next.

"Was my question weird?" Amon asked, genuinely confused by her reaction.

"Well, dwarves possess a natural talent for craftsmanship. When it comes to runes and constructing artifacts, they don’t need to rely on mathematics the way we humans do."

She paused and smiled. "It’s humans who use mathematics to create things on their level, yet we still never quite reach the level of dwarven craftsmanship."

"Ohhh... Amazing." Amon nodded thoughtfully. "I’ll visit their city one day."

"Sure, you should."

Aria waved him off. "Now go back to your seat and study hard. Next time, I want you to at least solve one line of it."

"Sure, Professor. I’ll try my best next time."

Finally freed from the clutches of the witch, Amon returned to his seat. The moment he sat down, Marcus clicked his tongue.

"You can’t even solve such an easy equation."

He taunted Amon.

Amon calmly glanced at him. "Yes, I can’t. So what? It won’t have any effect on my future or my path to becoming stronger."

"But it could make you fail the written exam."

"Huh?" Amon frowned at Marcus reply. "A-A single piece of paper can’t decide my future. I don’t care about written tests."

"Tch! You really—" Marcus couldn’t finish his sentence.

"Marcus Lionheart." Aria’s voice suddenly came from the front.

"Come forward and solve this new equation."

Marcus froze. She called him that means it was his turn to solve the question.

Amon slowly turned his head toward him.

Aria stood beside the blackboard with a smile on her face.

Marcus confidently stood up and walked toward the front of the classroom. He stopped beside Aria and took the piece of chalk she offered him.

Then he looked at the equation. His expression immediately froze. His eye twitched.

Meanwhile, Amon swallowed nervously from his seat.

’What kind of question is that? The words, the numbers..’

None of them made any sense to him. They entered his mind and immediately passed straight over his head.

’The question she gave me was apparently considered easy by many people... but even I can tell that the one she gave Marcus is on another level.’

Amon glanced at Marcus.

’I guess Marcus can solve it.’

Unfortunately, his confidence in his friend was misplaced.

Marcus remained in front of the blackboard like a statue for a long while.

Elsewhere in the classroom, Aisha had lowered her head onto her desk, desperately trying to hide herself so she wouldn’t get called next.

Seraphina’s golden eyes remained fixed on the equation as she tried to solve it. Eliana was doing the same. Arnold, meanwhile, sat lazily in his seat without a care in the world.

Amon looked around.

’Everyone is having trouble understanding it...’

A grin slowly appeared on his face. ’Damn, Marcus. You’re fucked.’ He almost laughed out loud. ’Hehe.’

Amon was thoroughly enjoying himself. Unfortunately, Marcus finally moved.

He picked up the chalk and began writing something on the blackboard. Amon stared at what he was writing.

He understood absolutely nothing.

’I have no choice but to copy again during next exam.’

He sighed internally. ’This is going to be painful.’

Finally, Marcus stopped after writing a single line.

Aria looked at his work and smiled.

"Well, well. I guess you at least tried something. Unlike someone who proudly raised his head and said, ’I don’t know what this is.’"

Amon immediately knew she was talking about him. Tch! That witch!

"Thank you, Professor," Marcus said. "It was a really difficult question."

"Hehe, that was certainly something. Now, go back to your seat. You did well."

Marcus turned around and walked back toward his seat, where Amon was sitting. As soon as he reached him, Marcus gave Amon a wide, smug grin.

It was almost as if he were saying, See? I did better than you.

Amon clenched his teeth and glared at him.

’This bastard is acting all smug now, even though he couldn’t solve it either.’

The world truly was cruel to Amon, a poor, unfortunate young man.

The last class finally ended.

As soon as the bell rang, Amon walked out of the classroom and immediately headed toward the back of the building without waiting for his friends.

Once he reached the secluded area, he leaned against the wall and waited.

A few minutes later, the sound of approaching footsteps reached his ears. A young man with dark-blue hair soon emerged from around the corner.

"So, you made your decision?"

Amon looked at Arnold and nodded.

"Yeah. I’ve made up my mind. I’ll come with you, whatever mission you’ve got planned."

He paused for a moment before shrugging.

"And honestly, at this point, I don’t really care about the danger anymore. I’ve already seen plenty of it." A faint smile appeared on his face. "So... maybe it’ll even be fun."

Whatever danger stored for Amon, for some reason he wanted to see what it was.
