The Smiling Death
Chapter 592: Request to Adelia
Amon eventually returned to his dormitory.
And, just as he had expected, he couldn’t sleep that night.
He tried. He closed his eyes and lay in bed, hoping exhaustion would eventually take over.
But his mind refused to cooperate. The System’s words kept replaying in his head. The mysterious being behind the System. The warning about his second year.
And the mission waiting for him during summer vacation.
"Sigh..."
Amon turned over in bed.
"I can’t take this anymore..."
He stared at the ceiling.
"Sigh... what am I supposed to do?"
No matter how much he thought about it, he couldn’t come to a satisfying decision.
Ignoring the System wasn’t an option.
Even if he wanted to stay away from it, the System already knew too much about him—and apparently, the mysterious being behind it was somehow connected to his journey.
Eventually, Amon sighed and closed his eyes.
’I’ll just agree to work with them for now and see how things go.’
His expression became slightly more serious.
’As long as I don’t have to involve the people I care about...’
That was the one condition he refused to compromise on.
Whatever the System wanted from him... Whatever mission awaited him. He would face it. He couldn’t think of another way.
"Well..."
Amon pulled the blanket over himself.
"Let’s just sleep for tonight."
With that, he slowly drifted into sleep. As if all the worries that had plagued him throughout the night had never existed.

Meanwhile, Adelia finally returned to her quarters.
After freshening up and changing into something more comfortable, she collapsed onto her soft bed.
She stared at the ceiling silently.
For the most part, everything in her life had been going smoothly since the beginning of the year.
Amon, her favorite student had returned to the academy. Her work was going well. Her life at the academy had returned to its usual peaceful rhythm.
Nothing particularly extraordinary had happened. Until recently. First, she learned that Amon was dating a woman named Scarlett.
And what shocked her even more was discovering that Scarlett was actually a year older than Adelia herself.
That revelation had caught her completely off guard.
’Maybe...’
Adelia’s eyes wandered toward the ceiling.
’Maybe after that first date with Amon... and then his sudden disappearance...’
She paused.
’Perhaps I really did develop some kind of feelings for him.’
She quickly shook her head.
’But it doesn’t matter.’
There was another matter that had recently appeared in her life. Archpriestess Stella. Adelia knew her well.
Very well, in fact. Stella had been one of her mentors during and even after her years at the academy.
Adelia had first met her at a temple in her family’s city. The temple had only recently been established, and Archpriestess Stella herself had come there to oversee its operations.
At the time, Adelia had been only seventeen.
Since Stella was already well acquainted with Adelia’s family, Adelia had respectfully asked her for guidance regarding healing and medical techniques.
Stella had happily agreed.
But what began as simple instruction quickly became something more.
Stella took a genuine interest in Adelia’s talent and potential.
From then on, even during Adelia’s academy years, she would spend portions of her summer and winter vacations studying under Stella at her main temple.
Those lessons had continued for years. And now, after all this time... Stella had suddenly appeared at the academy again.
Not as a teacher this time.
But with an offer.
She had offered Adelia the position of an Archpriestess.
Adelia had been completely caught off guard. For now, she had only told Stella that she needed some time to think about it.
But that wasn’t even the only thing occupying her mind anymore.
There was Amon. Then Scarlett. And now Seraphina.
Adelia’s expression became complicated.
She had recently discovered that Seraphina had fallen in love with Amon.
And apparently, Amon had confessed his feelings to her despite already being in a relationship with Scarlett.
Adelia slowly covered her face with one hand.
’That boy really doesn’t know how to make things simple, does he?’
She sighed. Then another thought suddenly crossed her mind.
’What if Amon eventually starts flirting with me too?’
Her face immediately became slightly warm.
’What if he tries to seduce me and add me to his...’
She froze.
Adelia’s eyes widened. She immediately sat up.
"What am I even thinking?"
She shook her head vigorously.
"That’s ridiculous."
She fell backward onto the bed again and stared at the ceiling.
Yet despite her denial. The thought refused to leave her mind.
’...Would he really do that?’
Adelia quickly covered her face with both hands.
"Sigh..."
Her life had been so peaceful.
Why had everything suddenly become so complicated?
Just then, the communication device resting on the bedside table suddenly rang.
Ring! Ring!
The sound pulled Adelia out of her thoughts.
She blinked several times before turning her head toward the device.
"Who could it be at this hour?"
She reached over and picked up the small communication device.
The moment she saw the name displayed on its screen, her eyes widened slightly.
Archpriestess Stella.
Adelia stared at the name for a few seconds.
’What a coincidence...’
She had literally been thinking about Stella only a few moments ago. She quickly composed herself before accepting the call.
"Hello, Archpriestess Stella."
Her tone was polite and respectful, as it always was when speaking with someone she considered a mentor.
However, the cheerful voice that came from the other side immediately contrasted with Adelia’s formal greeting.
"Adelia! Why are you sounding so formal? It’s been a while!"
Adelia couldn’t help but smile.
"... Big Sister, it’s late. I didn’t expect you to call me."
"Can’t I call an old student whenever I want?"
"You can, of course."
Adelia leaned back against the headboard.
"So... how have you been?"
"I’m doing well. Busy, as usual."
Stella’s voice carried a light, teasing tone.
"And what about you? How is academy life treating you? Still spending all your time buried in medical books? Or treating injured students."
Adelia chuckled softly.
"Not as much as before. Although, you know me. I can’t exactly stop studying."
"I knew you’d say that."
There was a brief pause. Then Stella’s voice became slightly more serious.
"Actually, that’s one of the reasons I’m calling you."
Adelia straightened slightly.
"Is something wrong?"
"Nothing serious."
Stella reassured her immediately.
"I need to travel to Eldermere City in the south."
"Eldermere?"
Adelia’s eyebrows rose.
"Yes. One of the temples under my jurisdiction there has requested assistance with a few matters."
Her voice became more businesslike.
"There are some things I need to personally oversee, and I’ll be taking a small team with me."
Adelia listened quietly.
"I want you to come with me."
"Me?"
"Yes, you."
Stella laughed lightly.
"Unless you’ve suddenly forgotten how to heal people."
Adelia smiled.
"Of course not."
"Good. Then you shouldn’t have a problem."
Stella’s teasing tone returned.
"More seriously, I need a trustworthy healer with me. Someone competent enough to handle medical emergencies if they arise, but also someone I know I can rely on. And maybe you might get liking to my Archpriestess position. Hehehe!"
Adelia understood immediately. This wasn’t simply an invitation for company. Stella was asking her to become part of the team.
"And you thought of me?"
"Who else would I ask? I mean I even considered to make you next Archpriestess hehe~"
Stella answered without hesitation.
"You’ve studied under me for years, Adelia. I’ve watched you grow from a seventeen-year-old girl who was obsessed with learning healing techniques into one of the academy’s finest healers."
Adelia’s expression softened.
"You still remember huh?"
"Of course I do."
Stella chuckled.
"You used to ask so many questions that sometimes I wondered if you planned to sleep at all."
Adelia laughed quietly.
"I was simply enthusiastic."
"That’s a generous way of describing it."
Adelia shook her head with a small smile.
She remembered those days clearly.
Back then, she had been only seventeen when she first met Stella at the newly established temple in her family’s city.
During her summer and winter vacations, Adelia would travel to Stella’s main temple and continue her studies.
Those years had played a major role in shaping her into the healer she was today.
And now, after all this time, Stella was asking her to accompany her on another journey.
Adelia didn’t see any reason to refuse.
"Alright."
She nodded, even though Stella couldn’t see her.
"I’ll come with you."
There was a pleased tone in Stella’s voice.
"I knew I could count on you."
"When are we need to go?"
"In summer. After your academy first semester exam will be done. So in summer vacation for you."
"Alright."
Adelia nodded.
"I’ll make the necessary arrangements at the academy."
"Perfect."
Stella sounded genuinely happy.
"Then it’s settled. I’ll send someone to bring you the details. Make sure you don’t forget anything."
