The Sin System: My Wife is Envy

Chapter 99: Six Months

  • Next Chapter

The seasons changed twice on the peak.

The first change was gradual. The mornings arriving later, the cloud sea thickening, the temperature at the eastern edge dropping enough that he stopped going there in the early hours and started going at midmorning instead. The second change was faster. The cloud sea thinned. The mornings came back early.

Six months, both directions.

The training ground in the first week had been something he watched from the edge. By the third month he was moving through it, the cultivator’s sense running as background the way Ether Authority had always run, both layered, neither requiring attention unless something changed.

The shoulder healed in nineteen days. Two days behind the inner range, exactly at the outer range boundary. He told Yua the morning the primary channel reached full structural integrity. She went to the eastern edge alone for twenty minutes and came back and said they should adjust the training load for the individual event.

They adjusted the training load.

The first tournament was in month two. He went down to the regional venue with them and stood at the edge of the paired event arena and did not run the cultivator’s sense because some things needed to be experienced without analysis. He watched.

They won. Not closely. The Yanwu Peak pair placed second.

The senior disciple took the individual event. Yua placed third, the best individual placement their peak had ever produced. During the award ceremony the senior disciple looked at her shoulder for one second. The assessment in that second was different from the assessment in the first second he had looked at it.

They went back up the mountain and trained for the next four months.

In that time he formed three things he did not have names for yet. The mana heart and the Qi core had stopped treating each other as adjacent systems and started doing something more integrated, and the result was occasionally legible and occasionally not.

Rui had theories. She had been writing them in a dedicated section of her notebook since month three and had asked him questions at dinner on six separate occasions. Each time he answered as accurately as he could and each time she wrote it down and went quiet.

"You are becoming something the texts do not have a category for," she said, in month four.

"Is that a problem," he said.

"No," she said. "I am documenting it in case someone needs the category later."

He thought this was a very Rui thing to say and did not tell her so.

The system had been useful in stretches and silent in stretches with no pattern he could identify. It awarded Ink on three occasions for things it described as novel without specifying what was novel. It went silent for six weeks in the middle of month four. He stopped noticing the silence around week three.

The quest status updated once.

[Save the Two Sisters Beyond the Horizon.]

[Progress: Ongoing. The definition of save continues to broaden. The system is comfortable with this.]

Yua at month six moved differently than she had at month zero. Not the technique. In the approach. The depth came from further away, which was the thing he had noticed in the first week and had not had words for until he had watched it build over six months.

She had started entering her depth at ten counts instead of four. By the time the technique required commitment she had already been building for longer than most opponents would expect, and the quality of the commitment showed it.

He had not told her to do this.

She had watched him run his own forms over six months and had begun doing it.

Rui noticed when it started. She said nothing about where it had come from.

The peak in month six was quieter than the peak in month zero. Not because less was happening. Considerably more was happening. But the three of them had run out of things that needed to be said to fill silence and had stopped saying them. The quiet had cost something to build. It was worth what it cost.

On the last morning of month six he went to the eastern edge and ran both perceptions out over the cloud sea as far as they would reach, which was further than in month one, and thought about a world where three hours had passed while he had been here and about what three hours plus six months felt like from the inside.

Then he went back for breakfast.

Traders stopping at the mountain began talking before they unloaded their supplies.

"Yanwu Peak has produced another genius."

"The Dragon Phoenix Tournament will be crowded this year."

"Have you heard of the sisters on Whitecloud Peak?"

"...The Ice Queen Disciples?"

The name spread long before either sister heard it themselves.

The Mountain Road

The notice arrived with the supply delivery on a clear morning.

Rui read it at the table. Then she read it again and put it flat on the table and looked at it.

"The Dragon Phoenix Tournament," she said.

He waited.

"Fifteen days," she said.

Yua looked up from where she was cleaning equipment near the window.

"The Dragon Phoenix is biennial," she said. "It is not biennial yet."

"The regional organizing committee advanced the date," Rui said. "Administrative reasons."

"Administrative reasons," Yua said.

"They have not specified," Rui said.

Yua set down what she was cleaning.

"Where," she said.

"Lianshan City," Rui said. "The main arena."

"We have competed at Lianshan," Yua said.

"Twice," Rui said. "We did not advance past the second round either time."

Yua looked at the notice.

"Yanwu Peak," she said.

"Will almost certainly enter," Rui said. "The Dragon Phoenix is their primary tournament. They have placed first in the paired event in three consecutive cycles."

Three consecutive cycles. Six years.

"Who else," he said.

Both of them looked at him.

"The Dragon Phoenix draws from across the region," Rui said. "Not just the local circuits. Sects we have not competed against. Individual practitioners we have no data on."

"Lianshan is eleven days from here on foot," Yua said. "Two days by the valley road."

"We would need to leave in four days to arrive with preparation time," Rui said.

"Three days," Yua said.

"Three days gives us one day of preparation," Rui said.

"One day is sufficient," Yua said.

He looked at the notice.

The Dragon Phoenix Tournament. He had no file on it. No specification, no development document, nothing from the game adaptation folder or the novel or any of the research materials. The regional event he had arrived at with prior data. This was different. He would go in knowing only what six months on this peak had built.

"I will come," he said.

Both of them looked at him.

"The tournament," he said.

"You do not have to," Rui said.

"I know," he said.

"Independent practitioners in the Dragon Phoenix compete against seated sect representatives," she said. "The bracket does not separate them."

"I understand," he said.

Yua was looking at him the way she had looked at him in month one, but with six months of additional information behind it.

"You have been training something," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"Alone," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the cloud sea beyond the window.

"Three days," she said, to Rui.

"Three days," Rui said.

They came down the mountain in the early hours of the third morning.

The descent took most of the day. The path from the peak through the cloud line and down through the lower forest where the trees grew closer and the Qi distribution was different from the open altitude, thicker and less organized.

He ran both perceptions at low output and let the mountain go past.

The valley road met the lower path at a marker stone, and at the marker stone the mountain was behind them and the road was ahead and the Dragon Phoenix Tournament was in twelve days.

Rui had her notebook. Yua had her equipment packed the way she packed everything, no space wasted.

He had what he had arrived with and what six months had added to it.

The road went south.

They followed it.

(Young Master Pov)

"Whitecloud Peak..."

The young master turned the jade token between his fingers.

"So the Ice Queen Disciples truly exist."

"Yes, Young Master."

"Prepare the invitation."

He smiled.

"If they refuse..."

"...I’ll simply meet them at the tournament."
