The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 123: Glass Crater
This time, no one argued.
They ran east from Blackhook Camp beneath a sky stained red by the third site’s activation. The glass crater lay beyond two broken ridges, but the red glow made it seem closer than it was. Every few minutes, the ground shivered beneath their boots as the buried road answered the Crownforge heart.
The Crownforge heart wanted him to take it. Every pulse beneath the ground carried the same promise: consume the source, end the war, hold every route in one hand. The thought was clean. Fast. Final.
It was also exactly what every crown had asked him to become.
Sable ran on his other side, her broken crown shard tucked inside her sleeve. "Role check," she said.
The group answered while moving.
"Scout," Rin called from the ridge line. "Guide," Neria said. "Witness," Sable replied. "Shield," Veyra said. "Countermark," Zareth said. "Firekeeper," Maelis added. "Recovery," Eshra said.
"Choice," Austin Veyron finished.
The white relay token glowed faintly between them.
They reached the first ridge as the crater came into view.
It had once been a quarry basin, but heat had turned the ground into a bowl of black glass. Red lines crisscrossed the surface, converging on a raised platform at the center. Above it floated the Crownforge heart, no longer hidden in Vordessa’s hand. It pulsed like a dark star wrapped in molten script.
Around it moved creatures made from broken commands.
They looked almost human from a distance: figures in crowns, workers’ coats, soldiers’ masks, and borrowed faces. Up close, their bodies were glass shells filled with red light. Each carried a different offer on its lips.
I WILL MAKE YOU SAFE.
I WILL MAKE YOU STRONG.
I WILL MAKE YOU RIGHT.
Mira stopped at the ridge edge. "Heart-born."
Zareth’s face tightened. "The convergence has started."
"How long?" Taryn asked.
"Until sunrise," he said. "After that, the heart can root the road permanently."
A figure stepped onto the central platform.
Vordessa wore no body made of flesh now. Her temporary form was shaped from black metal and red furnace light, tall and elegant, with a crown of molten nails floating above her brow. The heart hung behind her like a second sun.
"Devourer," she called. Her voice reached the ridge without crossing the distance. "You came before dawn. I expected nothing less."
Austin Veyron did not answer.
Vordessa’s gaze moved along the team, stopping on Zareth and Mira.
"Lieutenant. Commander. You stand with the people who make weakness a virtue. Do you feel cleaner?"
Mira’s hand tightened on her hammer.
Zareth answered first. "I feel responsible."
The Ash Matron smiled. "Responsibility is a chain for people too afraid to use power."
Sable stepped forward. "You taught that to children and called it wisdom."
"I taught them survival."
"You taught them fear of being free."
The heart pulsed.
The glass crater changed.
For Austin Veyron, the red lines became routes leading into every place he cared about. Grand Meridian’s gates. Cinder Hollow’s water tunnels. Blackhook’s trade yard. The prisoner pens. Each path led to a version of failure: walls broken, people bound, allies dying while he hesitated.
At the center of each vision sat a throne made from the white root chain.
TAKE IT, the heart whispered. NO ONE WILL BE LOST IF YOU HOLD THEM.
Austin Veyron stopped breathing for a second.
Veyra grabbed his wrist.
"Name it," she said.
"The heart wants me to own every route."
"And what do you choose?"
The words were simple. They gave him something to hold.
"I choose not to."
The vision cracked.
Across the ridge, the others were fighting their own offered dreams. Sable stared at a crown that promised to erase everything she had done as Herald. Taryn stood before an illusion of every pit worker she had failed to save. Mira saw herself wearing Vordessa’s commander mask, respected and feared. Zareth saw the old forge banners rising behind him.
One by one, they spoke.
"I choose to remember," Sable said.
"I choose to keep working," Taryn said.
"I choose not to be feared," Mira said.
"I choose conditions," Zareth said.
The heart-born creatures screamed and charged.
The battle began across the glass.
Rin’s arrows shattered the first two creatures, but their red light spilled across the ground and tried to re-form. Sarielle’s silver fire burned the light away before it reached the team. Maelis threw ember bursts along the convergence lines, forcing the heart-born back from the ridge.
Veyra met a crowned soldier in the center of the slope. Its sword was made from a command line, every strike whispering that obedience would end the pain. She cut the blade apart and kicked the creature into a glass fissure.
Neria and Eshra moved toward the outer lines, using water filters and forge tools to flood small cracks with mineral slurry. Wherever they sealed a line, the red glow dimmed.
Austin Veyron and Sable went for the first convergence anchor.
The anchor was a cluster of black glass spikes arranged around a red core. A heart-born worker blocked their path, its face changing every second—merchant, guard, parent, prisoner.
"Take my load," it said to Austin Veyron. "Carry every burden. Be necessary."
DEVOUR rose, eager to consume the creature and its power.
"Target," Austin Veyron said. "Anchor command. Not the creature’s whole core."
"Witnessed," Sable answered.
He drove the white root chain around the black spikes. The worker attacked, but Sable’s broken crown shard cut through its red-lit arm. Austin Veyron opened DEVOUR and bit into the anchor’s claim.
DIRECT.
He consumed the word.
The first convergence line went dark.
The heart shook overhead.
Vordessa raised one hand. The glass crater split into three paths, each leading toward a different outer anchor.
"Do you see?" she asked. "You cannot destroy a system without deciding what replaces it. You can remove my commands, but someone must choose the next one."
"People can choose together," Austin Veyron said.
"Until fear makes them beg to be ruled."
The second anchor lit brighter.
A wave of heart-born creatures rose from the glass, enough to overwhelm the ridge. Then white lights appeared behind Austin Veyron’s team.
Nysara came over the western ridge with a support group from Cinder Hollow and Blackhook. Adult refugees, wardens, traders, and former prisoners moved beside her, carrying shields, water barrels, tools, and weapons they had freely chosen.
"No one rules alone," Nysara called. "We came because we heard the road was trying."
The white relay token flared.
The newcomers took roles without being assigned. Defenders formed a line. Healers claimed the wounded. Water carriers cooled the hot glass. Witnesses stood near the anchors, recording every choice so the heart could not twist them.
The heart-born wave hit the line.
It was chaos, but it was not command.
Austin Veyron ran for the second anchor with Veyra and Zareth. Mira took the third route with Taryn and Neria. Sable stayed at the ridge center, using the broken shard to disrupt the heart’s words before they could become crowns.
At the second anchor, a red spear formed in the air and aimed at Zareth.
"You are mine," Vordessa said.
Zareth froze.
The white chain around his wrists gleamed in the firelight.
"No," he said. "I am responsible for what I did. I am not yours."
He pulled the chain tight himself and used it to catch the red spear. Veyra cut the weapon in half. Austin Veyron consumed the anchor’s next command.
RANK.
The second line went dark.
Across the crater, Mira’s hammer came down on the third anchor just as Neria poured mineral slurry into its base. Taryn cut the red core free. The last outer convergence line flickered.
For one breath, the heart was exposed.
Austin Veyron felt it calling louder than ever.
Take me, it promised. Take every route. No more fear. No more debate. No more people lost because you waited for consent.
His mouth went dry.
He could do it.
He could devour the heart.
Veyra stood beside him, blood on her cheek. Sable stood on the other side, holding the broken crown shard. Their eyes were on him, not controlling, not pleading. Witnessing.
Austin Veyron closed his hand around the white root chain.
"Not alone," he said.
The heart screamed.
Vordessa’s temporary body stepped down from the platform. The molten crown above her brow expanded, forming a black-red mantle of armor around her shoulders.
"You have delayed it," she said. "You have not stopped it."
The buried road beneath the crater roared.
Red light surged westward through the ground, reaching for Grand Meridian. At the same time, a white response flared from the city’s root heart.
The two networks locked together beneath the earth.
Vordessa smiled as dawn began to pale the eastern sky.
"The road is connected," she said. "Now we see whether your freedom can survive a war."
The final confrontation had begun.
