The final three hours before launch transformed Skyway Station Alpha into a cathedral of cold, calculated precision.
By four in the morning, the tropospheric wind surrounding the floating ring had died down to a sharp, crystal-clear calm. The ambient temperature on the launch deck dropped to thirty-two degrees below zero, freezing the ambient moisture in the thin air into tiny, hexagonal ice needles that hovered in mid-air like suspended glitter.
The Aether-Wing sat locked within the central launch gantry, suspended over the vast, three-hundred-foot open aperture at the heart of the station.
Under the harsh white glare of twelve high-intensity arc lamps, the vessel’s double-layer skin looked less like forged metal and more like the streamlined carapace of a deep-sea leviathan. The seamless magnesium-auric hull gleamed with a pale, silver-gold luster, while the compressed quartz and mica heat tiles along its spine reflected the bright blue light of the ground array far below.
Jacob stood beneath the vessel’s belly, wrapped in a thick fur-lined leather mechanic’s suit, his heavy gloved hands applying the final coat of high-altitude graphite lubricant to the primary release latches.
"Pressure tests on the inner cabin are holding at a solid fifteen pounds per square inch," Jacob called out, his breath forming thick, white clouds that instantly froze against his beard. "The rubber gaskets are soft, the mica insulation is tight, and the double-pane quartz viewing domes haven’t shown a single microscopic hairline crack under three atmospheres of dry nitrogen!"
Elias walked slowly around the vessel’s tail assembly, his long indigo tunic trailing behind him on the frosted deck.
In his right hand, he held his new five-foot auric-titanium slide rule, using its sharp metal corner to clear tiny specks of rime ice from the delicate gold wire rings set inside the primary induction throat.
Beside him, Lira trotted with a crisp, purposeful gait. Her thick winter fur was immaculate, and her forehead crystal glowed with a bright, steady amber light that cast sharp, orange shadows across the frosted launch gantry. Every few seconds, her crystal emitted a soft, high-pitched ping, a sonic radar sweep testing the structural density of the magnesium hull.
"The induction rings are aligned to within two thousandths of a millimeter, Jacob," Elias said, his voice quiet, calm, and utterly undisturbed by the freezing gale blowing up from the central aperture. "If the ground beam remains stable, the magnetic throat will lock onto the kinetic vector without a single unit of friction loss."
"And if the ground beam wavers by half a degree?" Marcus asked, stepping out from the climate-controlled monitoring station while carrying a heavy, lead-shielded dispatch box. His face was pale, his nose blue from the cold, and his mica ledger was securely clamped inside a water-tight brass frame. "Sol-Aethel just sent a wire through the pneumatic line. The surface power grid is operating at ninety-nine point nine percent capacity, but the secondary relay at the Western Basin experienced a two-millisecond voltage dip during the five o’clock phase change."
"A two-millisecond dip on the ground becomes a twenty-foot lateral wobble at sixty thousand feet, Marcus," Elias replied, turning to face his recorder. "Did the Basin engineers re-center the phase choke?"
"They bypassed the secondary choke entirely and locked the line directly to the core output of the Peak of Infinity," Marcus answered, holding up a fresh telegraph slip. "Chancellor Vane personally signed the override order. He said the Assembly is betting fifty million sovereigns on your slide rule today, Master Elias. He doesn’t want a two-millisecond dip standing in the way of the payout."
"Vane understands investment," Elias said, a faint, dry smile touching the corner of his lips. "Now let’s see if he understands trajectory."
Section II: The Sealing of the Shell
At five-thirty in the morning, the launch crew began the final boarding sequence.
The interior of the Aether-Wing’s pressure cabin was compact, functional, and engineered with the agonizing spatial efficiency of a chronometer. There were no decorative bronze scrollworks, no velvet-upholstered seats, and no heavy iron fittings. Everything had been forged from light, ultra-dense magnesium alloys or carved from blocks of high-insulation vulcanized fiber.
Elias settled into the forward pilot’s cradle, a curved, shock-absorbing frame of woven leather straps and high-tension steel springs.
Directly before him, mounted on a motorized swiveling bronze gantry, was his five-foot auric-titanium slide rule, connected via thin silver linkage rods directly to the primary throttle valves of the induction throat.
To his right, Jacob took his position at the mechanical ballast controls, his hands resting on two massive lever handles forged from cold-rolled steel. To his left, Marcus strapped himself into the observation seat, securing his mica ledger and three high-precision aneroid barometers to his lap with thick leather harness straps.
Lira leaped gracefully into her central cradle, a padded, dome-shaped brass nest suspended directly beneath the triple-paned forward quartz viewport.
"Closing main pressure hatch," Jacob announced, pulling the heavy magnesium door inward.
CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK!
Eight heavy, wedge-shaped locking teeth drove home into their hardened steel seats along the hatch rim. Jacob hauled down the central sealing wheel, compressing the thick, greased rubber gaskets until the hatch outer seam formed a single, unbroken flush line with the exterior hull.
The harsh sound of the wind, the roar of the arc lamps, and the distant shouting of the launch crew vanished instantly.
Inside the cabin, the silence was total, absolute, heavy, and profound. The only sound remaining was the soft, rhythmic hum of the pneumatic oxygen scrubbers beneath the floorboards and the quiet, steady thump-thump of Lira’s crystal cycling through its standby frequencies.
"Internal air pressure: fourteen point seven pounds," Marcus called out, his voice sounding curiously flat in the small, sealed chamber. "Oxygen mixture: twenty-one percent. Internal temperature: fifty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and holding steady."
Elias adjusted his collar microphone, tapping the brass voice diaphragm twice. "Station Alpha, this is Aether-Wing. Hatch sealed. Systems on internal battery power. We are ready for gantry release."
Through the forward quartz dome, the silhouette of Master Elena could be seen standing on the high observation balcony of the station, holding a brass signal lamp.
She raised the lamp high into the dark air.
"Ground array reaching maximum focus in five... four... three..." Elena’s voice echoed through the crystal audio receiver inside the c
abin. "...two... one... ENGAGE THE RAIL!"
