The Regressed Archduke of the West

Chapter 100: Alyse’s Mysterious Partner

  • Next Chapter

Alyse stayed silent for a long moment, her violet eyes reflecting a brief, flickering shadow of contemplation.

Austin’s brutal suggestion was far from irrational. In fact, it was a dark, pragmatic thought that had crossed her own mind on more than one occasion.

Instead of treading on eggshells, agonizing over every move, and suffering the disrespect of traditionalist old fools, why couldn’t she simply eliminate the entire opposition in one decisive, bloody stroke?

That would be the simplest way out of this situation but her current strength and situation makes it impossible.

Slowly, Alyse shook her head, a bitter, weary smile playing upon her lips.

She knew the reality of her situation all too well.

"If only it were that simple, Master Austin," Alyse answered, her voice carrying a heavy, quiet weight. "The reality of ducal politics is vastly more complicated than a simple assassination order.

The opposition isn’t a single target; it’s a deeply entrenched network of high-ranking military commanders, influential vassal houses, and shadowy elders. Worse yet... I have yet to identify the true masterminds pulling the strings from behind the scenes."

She uncrossed her legs and leaned back into the velvet armchair, folding her arms across her chest. "Every move I make is heavily scrutinized. My political opponents are eagerly waiting for me to crack under the pressure, to make an emotional, reckless mistake that would give them the exact justification they need to strip me of my title.

That is why I am forced to act with extreme caution. Once I pinpoint the true leaders of this faction... then, and only then, will I execute a plan to purge them entirely from the Duchy."

Austin listened carefully, his stoic mask returning as he offered a small, understanding nod.

While he appreciated the ruthlessness of her ultimate goal, he was, first and foremost, a merchant who had spent a week waiting in the dark.

"I understand your plight, Lady Alyse," Austin said smoothly, resting his hands on his lap.

"However, let us address the primary reason I traveled across the continent. Is our trade agreement going to be finalized today, or am I wasting my time?"

Alyse’s bitter expression vanished, replaced by a confident, brilliant grin that illuminated her ethereal features. "Of course the deal is going to be finalized, Master Austin. There was never any doubt about that.

The Paureen Merchant Group is a direct, indispensable partner of the Veraxes Ducal Family. The high-grade resources, continental-class trade access, and raw capital you bring to the table are far too critical for the prosperity of the Veraxes Duchy for me to ever compromise."

Austin’s brow furrowed into a sharp frown, his tone tinged with cold irritation. "If the deal was guaranteed from the very beginning... then why, in heaven’s name, did you keep me waiting for a full week?"

"As I mentioned earlier, this is a dangerous, pivotal moment in my life," Alyse replied smoothly, her smile softening into a serious posture.

"I had to act with absolute discretion, not just to protect my own neck, but to ensure the safety of this transaction. To be precise, there were three distinct reasons why I delayed our meeting for seven days."

Austin raised an eyebrow, gesturing for her to continue.

"First," Alyse began, holding up a delicate, gloved finger, "by deliberately stalling the meeting, I successfully drew the attention of the traitors away from your estate. Their spies were focused entirely on my movements at the ducal palace, allowing your merchant delegation to settle into the Golden City without being targeted, surveilled, or pressured by my enemies."

She raised a second finger. "Second, it was a necessary test of your loyalty and disposition. If you had been planted or bribed by the traitorous faction within my Duchy, your reaction to my sudden delay would have been vastly different.

You would have been consumed by uncontrollable, irrational rage, because my prolonged absence would have thoroughly ruined whatever timetable your secret masters had set for you.

Seeing you remain composed and patient proved to me that the Paureen Family stands entirely independent."

"And the third reason?" Austin pressed, his eyes narrowing slightly.

Alyse let out a long, quiet exhale, her violet eyes flashing with a complex mix of reverence and tactical calculation. "Thirdly... because someone very powerful specifically requested to make contact with you."

Austin’s eyebrows shot up in genuine surprise.

"Someone wants to meet me?" he asked, genuine confusion creeping into his voice. "I am merely the third son of the Paureen house.

If a high-level political entity sought an audience with our family, they would normally target my father or my elder brothers. Who could possibly be asking for me?"

"To save my life and secure my position as the future Duchess, I chose to form a secret alliance with this individual," Alyse explained, her tone dropping into a low, confidential register.

"He understands the gravity of the Abyssal and political threats we face, and he has pledged to send military aid to my faction when the time is right. Furthermore, he assured me that he would personally assist in uprooting and purging the traitors within my Duchy."

She paused, leaning forward slightly as she delivered the climax of her revelation. "A few days ago, an encrypted letter arrived at my private chambers.

Upon learning that Austin Paureen of the famed Paureen Merchant Group was temporarily residing within the Veraxes Duchy to finalize a trade deal... he explicitly instructed me to arrange a private connection between the two of you."

Austin remained completely silent, his sharp mind racing to evaluate every major figure across the Western and Eastern continents.

Who possessed the foresight, the audacity, and the political weight to reach across ducal borders and manipulate both the Veraxes heiress and the Paureen family’s third son?

"Who is this partner of yours, Lady Alyse?" Austin asked calmly, his golden eyes locking onto hers.

Lady Alyse leaned back into her chair, completely relaxed, as her lips curled upward into an enigmatic, beautiful smile.

"Craig von Darkstar."
