Chapter 509: Chapter 321: Don’t Speak Ill of a Dragon Behind Its Back
Zog carried the small, "carefully" selected gift he had picked out, strolling leisurely toward Elsa’s house.
He chose not to fly the most direct route so he could stop and sample all the snacks along the way, taking one bite at each stall.
Was he really that hungry? Not really.
The main reason was that it was free.
This was one of the perks of being a Lord.
Earn the big bucks, and take every small advantage. As an Evil Dragon, one had to cover all the bases.
Humming a little tune and picking his teeth—happiness was just that simple.
Elsa’s house wasn’t far from the Lord’s Mansion, only about a fifteen-minute walk away.
This was something Zog could appreciate.
A short commute was a crucial component of a happy life. Spending three or four hours commuting every day would be absolutely dreadful.
"KNOCK KNOCK—"
Zog knocked on the door of the three-story villa.
Her home was a testament to how much her quality of life had skyrocketed.
She’d gone from having a roommate, to renting her own place, to living in a villa with her family. And now, she had several thousand square feet all to herself.
But after knocking, Zog waited for half a minute, and no one answered.
"KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!"
Zog knocked again, a little harder this time.
Still no answer.
"Hmm?" Zog was a little confused. "Elsa, you home? Your handsome, kind, compassionate, and exceptionally virtuous boss is here to see you!"
Only after shouting did he remember she was supposedly bedridden. Making her come downstairs to open the door really was a bit inconsiderate.
So Zog pulled out his phone and sent a very polite message.
"I’m coming in now, hope that’s okay."
’For some reason, that message gave me a creepy-uncle vibe,’ Zog thought.
A lock is no obstacle for someone who’s determined to get in.
Just call a locksmith, and you’ll see how a professional can pop it open in seconds.
Besides, magic had convenient little spells like the Lock Unlocking Spell.
Typically, no one would enchant a door with Magic Immunity.
Maintaining Magic Immunity on a door, even the lowest-tier version, was far more expensive than the potential loss from a burglary.
However, Zog had a plan that was even quicker than lockpicking.
The window.
He’d channel his inner Zhuo Qian.
He didn’t think entering through a window was unbecoming of a Dragon; he had absolutely no sense of his own Legendary status.
Two minutes passed with no reply. Sure, an employee on vacation could ignore her boss, but this wasn’t a work-related message.
Not even a ’read’ receipt.
Of course she hadn’t read it. At that very moment, Elsa, Dean, and Craig were arguing themselves red in the face over a Legendary Ring that had dropped from a treasure chest.
The bonds of camaraderie?
There was no camaraderie!
Meanwhile, Zog was starting to feel that something wasn’t quite right. ’Could something have happened to her?’
He flew to the window and looked inside.
The room was a mess—the blankets weren’t folded, the bed was unmade, and she was nowhere to be seen.
Zog listened intently. There wasn’t a single sound. He was certain there were no living beings inside the house.
’This is bad.’ He was even starting to suspect that the Soul Ascenders had resurfaced and come after her.
’I have to find Elsa.’
Zog took a deep whiff of the air in Elsa’s bedroom. It wasn’t some kind of perverted act—he was preparing to track her by scent.
Elsa’s scent was never consistent. Every few weeks, she’d be ’marinated’ in the aroma of some new cosmetic.
Following the direction of the scent, Zog flew off in pursuit.
...
「Meanwhile, in the Dungeon’s tavern.」
"The strategy devised by the great Legendary Mage Soron and the Ancient Golden Dragon has worked!"
Ben painted a vivid picture of the final battlefield.
As the game’s designer, he was also an excellent Underground City Lord. His voice was versatile, he was emotionally invested, and he never added plot twists just to give the players a hard time.
Elsa, Dean, and Craig could be considered veterans of the game by now. Everyone was deeply immersed in their roles, making the campaign an incredibly enjoyable one.
Part of the reason they were so adept was that they had modeled their characters after themselves, making it easy to slip into the roles.
"The evil Giant Dragon Zog, ensnared by the trap set by Soron and the Golden Dragon, crashed down hard into a pre-cleared city square. A deafening BOOM echoed across the city as a cloud of dust swallowed several blocks.
"This catastrophic sight terrified the civilians. Even seasoned Adventurers couldn’t help but feel timid. But the Dragon’s piercing shriek reminded them that even the fearsome Zog could be wounded. Now was his most vulnerable moment. Perhaps today was the day this red menace would finally vanish from Feilin!"
’Finally, the moment has come.’
Elsa sat in her chair, stamping her feet in excitement.
’Time to take down Zog.’
Four days and more than thirty hours of effort—playing with the intensity of a full-time job, slogging through all sorts of bizarre quests, and collecting outlandish Casting materials—it was all for this.
’Heh heh heh! Xiaozhuo, get ready to taste a critical success from Lady Elsa herself!’
According to the game’s scenario, taking down Zog wasn’t a task for a single party of Adventurers; Ben had designed it with a degree of realism in mind.
Soron and the Golden Dragon would immobilize Zog and shatter his defenses. Then, all the Adventurer parties who had completed the preparatory quests would focus their attacks, ultimately defeating the mighty foe through their combined efforts.
Elsa’s party was just one small part of this massive event, but that didn’t dampen her excitement in the slightest.
Like in many other games, the penultimate boss is often the hardest, while the final boss is just there for the players to have fun with.
The boss fight against the trapped Zog wasn’t difficult. Instead, it was a cathartic damage-dumping phase where all you had to do was find a way to inflict the highest possible DPS.
"Under the barrage of countless attacks, Zog could take no more. His massive draconic head crashed to the ground, his scorching breath growing ever fainter. Perhaps by a twist of fate, the chance to deliver the final blow... falls to you..."
