Chapter 501: Chapter 317: The Bratty Kids’ Epic Meeting
Dean didn’t pay any mind to the name Craig.
What he cared about was the Light Creation God card.
Sure enough, duelists are drawn to each other.
Playing the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game was one of Dean’s few hobbies. When he heard a Legendary Level card like this had appeared, he naturally had to see it for himself.
So, he did his best to squeeze through the crowd toward the sound of the argument.
After much squirming, Dean finally saw the duelist who claimed to have the Light Creation God card.
The boy looked to be about Dean’s age, maybe half a head taller. His clothes were exquisitely made, suggesting a wealthy family background. That made sense; how could you afford to collect Yu-Gi-Oh! cards if you weren’t well-off?
As everyone knows, playing the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game is one thing, but collecting the cards is another. The two are in completely different leagues when it comes to cost.
But Dean cared more about the card than the person holding it.
He breathed a sigh of relief only after confirming the card was in a protective sleeve and undamaged.
He leaned in closer and asked nervously, "Excuse me, is this the legendary Light Creation God? The one from the Yu-Gi-Oh! anniversary edition, limited to a thousand copies, that can only be summoned by sacrificing the Three Illusory Gods, and if you summon it successfully, you instantly win the duel? The one that was originally three Gold Coins but now costs at least ten Gold Coins?"
As Dean finished his rapid-fire spiel, Craig found it harder to suppress his grin than to control the kick of a Type 56 Magic Shotgun.
’Suddenly, the money spent on this card felt completely worth it.’
"Yeah, that’s the one. It’s not *that* amazing, I guess."
"Can I take a look?"
"Of course."
’What’s the point of having a collection if you don’t show it off?’
Craig generously handed the card to Dean.
Holding the Light Creation God, Dean was just like Gollum with the Supreme Magic Ring, his eyes filled with nothing but "my precious."
The festival’s opening ceremony concluded, and the crowd gradually dispersed. People who had reserved a spot were already lining up for the small boats, so the lawn was no longer as crowded.
Passersby glanced over at the boy whose eyes were gleaming as he stared at a small card, and at the rich kid beside him whose smile was growing increasingly creepy.
’What’s going on here?’
’Such a fine young lad, and he’s gone bonkers.’
Some who understood what was happening explained to the people next to them, "See that? That’s what playing Yu-Gi-Oh! does to you..."
After admiring the rare, limited-edition card, Dean asked curiously, "How did you manage to buy this? I went to the store to line up for it, too. I even ran out before dawn, but I still couldn’t get one."
"Heh."
Craig gave what he hoped was a nonchalant smile.
’I suddenly understand why adults always bring along a sidekick who gets their hobbies. So this is what it feels like.’
"It wasn’t that difficult. I’m just a top-tier member at Zog’s Toy Store. I get priority access to buy all these limited-edition little things."
"Whoa, that must cost a ton of money."
Although Dean’s family was also relatively well-off, the top-tier membership at Zog’s Toy Store was still a distant dream.
He’d heard the membership wasn’t even permanent; you had to spend a certain amount at the store every year, or your status would be revoked.
’Come to think of it, being a ’top-tier member’ doesn’t sound so prestigious... it’s more like being the designated whale...’
"Money is just an external object. What I’m pursuing now is a higher state of mind. I want to become a distinguished scholar, a physicist, and make fluid dynamics a solvable problem."
Craig stated a grand goal, though he had no idea how difficult it would actually be to achieve. He had simply heard it was extremely hard and that succeeding would be an achievement for the history books.
In other words, regardless of whether he could ever succeed, it sounded cool to say.
Dean, however, didn’t understand a word of it. His coursework hadn’t yet covered what on earth fluid dynamics was.
But that didn’t stop him from playing along.
"You must be super smart."
"Just average, just average, hahaha, just average..."
"Oh, then are you in the Genius Class? I heard there’s a Genius Class in Deepwater City, and only the most exceptional people can get in."
At the mention of the Genius Class, Craig’s mood soured.
It was the biggest setback he had suffered since arriving in Deepwater City.
He had only tested into the Ordinary Class, and he was indignant when he found out.
The great Young Master Craig had always been in the top echelons, and he expected school to be no different.
He had therefore thrown a fit, demanding to be put in the Genius Class, claiming that his absence was the school’s loss and a flaw in the assessment system.
But after a few days of complaining, he dropped the subject entirely.
He had audited a class in the Genius Class.
The Genius Class’s courses were open for any interested students from the Ordinary Class to audit. After all, the Genius Class covered a broader range of subjects in addition to having a higher level of difficulty and depth.
They taught many things that weren’t covered in the Ordinary Class, so students who were curious could choose which lectures to audit based on the publicly available schedule.
Craig decided to sit in on a physics lecture.
Before the lecture, he wondered why no one else was there to audit it.
Less than five minutes in, he understood why.
He couldn’t understand it. He *really* couldn’t understand it.
He began to wonder if the professor was even speaking the common tongue.
If the other students in the Genius Class hadn’t been able to converse fluently with the professor, he would have suspected they were all just pretending to understand, too.
He was in low spirits for days after that, unable to accept that he wasn’t the smartest kid at school.
He was doing better now, having come to terms with the reality of his own intellect.
However, the mention of the Genius Class still made him a little uncomfortable, forcing him to recall the terror of having his brain pummeled by an overload of physics knowledge and the blow to his ego dealt by those kids his own age.
"No," Craig said, forcing a smile. "I’m just in the Ordinary Class."
