Chapter 325: Chapter 245: The Advancing Youth (3)
But for a Human, never mind the risks, just whether they could accept it was a question.
"It’s okay, I’m not afraid of hardship. Trust me, Uncle Mike."
’Alright, the silly kid didn’t get it.’
Old Mike added, "You might end up working with races that aren’t so easy to get along with."
’This was his limit. He could only hint this much. Any clearer and he would trigger the confidentiality Contract.’
"I’m not prejudiced against Tieflings," Peter said, thinking Uncle Mike was referring to them.
"Alright, then."
Old Mike stamped Peter’s application form and handed him a Contract.
"Sign it, and report back in a week with this."
"Thank you, Uncle Mike."
Peter happily left the tent.
Outside the square, he met up with Parker.
"How’d it go?"
"I got the Contract too." Parker showed off the Contract Scroll in his hand.
"Hey, during your interview, did the interviewer tell you it would be very hard, or even dangerous?"
Only then did Peter realize that what Uncle Mike had said earlier was a little strange.
"Huh? No. The guy who interviewed me heard my family has a background in civil engineering, so he didn’t ask a thing. He was more eager to sign the Contract than I was, like he was afraid I’d run off."
"Is that so."
"Alright, I’m heading home. This is the last week of freedom before we start work. I’m gonna enjoy it. See you in a week."
Parker turned and left, saying as he walked, "I don’t have a girlfriend from the City Lord’s family. I’ll just have to go to the Devalun District and help out some girls in need."
Leaving Peter standing there alone.
He didn’t know if he should tell Grace that he was leaving Twin Tower City.
Would Grace be angry when she heard?
Angry that he had made the decision on his own.
He had already disappointed Grace so much.
’But if I hide this from her too, she’ll probably be completely disappointed in me.’
After hesitating for a long time, Peter picked up his phone.
He didn’t dare tell Grace face-to-face. Whenever he was with her now, he couldn’t help but feel timid.
"I’m going to Deepwater City to be a Mechanician."
He finished typing and hit send.
The moment he sent it, his heart began to race. He had no idea how Grace would respond.
A minute later, there was no reply.
"Sigh..."
Peter sighed, not knowing if he was disappointed or relieved, or perhaps both.
He decided to unsend the message.
’Maybe it would be better to just leave quietly.’
Just as his finger was about to tap the unsend button, messages from Grace popped up, one after another.
"What do you mean?"
"Are you kidding me?"
"Why didn’t you tell me before?"
"Peter, are you trying to avoid me?!"
"Am I really that unimportant to you?"
"Say something!"
Seeing the messages from Grace scrolling on his phone, Peter didn’t know how to reply.
After thinking for a long while, he decided to apologize first and began to type.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk," a clicking sound came from behind him. "I don’t think an apology is what she needs."
Peter spun around and saw a Red Dragon.
The Dragon was eating melon seeds while peeking at his phone.
"Mr. Zog?" Peter was quite surprised.
"The one and only."
Zog had come to inspect the first day of recruitment.
A single Human among a large crowd of Tieflings was quite conspicuous, so out of curiosity, he had come over to observe secretly.
"So you’re the one who bagged the City Lord’s daughter?"
"No, I haven’t ’bagged’ Grace."
Peter didn’t understand why Mr. Zog would use such a strange verb. ’Maybe it’s a Dragon Race custom,’ he thought.
He’d only ever "bagged" Grace in his wildest dreams.
When he had those kinds of dreams, he’d have to shamefully go wash his underwear in the morning, filled with guilt, feeling like he had sullied their pure relationship.
"It’s a figure of speech, don’t you get it? You have no sense of humor."
Zog currently looked just like a gossipy old woman on the street, except his way of cracking open the melon seeds was rather tricky.
Because his teeth were too sharp, he couldn’t perform the "cracking" motion, so he had to pinch them open with his claws.
He tossed the seed shells into a Treasure Chest Monster to be disposed of later.
Such a good, hygienic Red Dragon.
"Are you a scumbag?"
"A scumbag?"
"I mean, are you playing with Grace’s feelings?"
"Of course not!" Peter didn’t understand why Mr. Zog would see him that way.
"You don’t take initiative, you don’t refuse. It looks a lot like you’re playing with her feelings."
"I’m not!" Peter denied loudly. "I just... feel like I’m not worthy of her."
"Then why are you going to Deepwater City?"
"I want to become a Mechanical Master."
"And why become a Master?"
"So I can be worthy of her."
"Then tell her that!" Zog kicked Peter with his leg.
It wasn’t a hard kick.
If he had, Peter probably wouldn’t have had the chance to say anything ever again.
"Okay." Peter got ready to type.
"Go to her house and tell her in person!" Zog kicked Peter again.
Zog felt that particular frustration of seeing potential go to waste.
"You’re so young, why are you so timid? Go to her house now. If you don’t, I’ll drag you off to the mines to dig ore."
"Now?"
"Right now!"
Under pressure from the Giant Dragon, Peter got on his bicycle and headed straight for the City Lord’s Mansion.
"I’m having someone watch you!"
Zog’s voice carried from far away.
’Back when I used to binge-watch shows, I hated it when the male and female leads would endlessly drag things out with each other, with all the misunderstandings and accidents and whatnot.’
’And then a second male lead and second female lead would pop up out of nowhere, turning it into a shipping war.’
’Watching too much of that stuff gives me a stomachache.’
’Now that a young-adult "stomachache" drama was unfolding right in front of him, Zog decided to force the plot forward. It was his solemn duty.’
By the time Peter rode all the way to the City Lord’s Mansion, it was already night.
Standing far outside the main gate, he suddenly realized a problem: what excuse could he use to get inside?
’Maybe I should just leave.’
