Chapter 311: Saving People

"Xiaoqi, is that you, Xiaoqi?"

Although all killer whales look pretty much the same, there are subtle differences. Back then, they had spent a great deal of effort under Yun Jiao’s guidance learning to tell them apart.

The killer whale over there raised its tail and cried out, as if in response.

Yun Xiaowu and the others grew even more excited. If the adults weren’t holding them back, they would have climbed right onto the killer whale’s back to go find Yun Jiao.

As soon as the killer whale left, the nearby youths and children crowded around, asking about them.

Yun Xiaoqi seized the opportunity to promote his idea. "Do you guys want to take pictures with the killer whales? When my sister gets back, she can help you take photos with them! The price isn’t steep—fifty cents a photo. We’ll provide the camera, and we’ll develop the pictures, too."

One by one, boats were brought back. It seemed Bailong Village would soon have another legendary tale to tell.

Meanwhile, Yun Jiao was in the middle of a rescue.

And she was doing it in epic fashion: standing on the back of a Humpback Whale.

"Here! Over here!"

Seeing the people dressed in army green, Yun Jiao unhesitatingly directed the Humpback Whale toward them.

There were three people in total, and one of them appeared to be unconscious.

Yun Jiao dove headfirst into the sea, helping to get the person onto the Humpback Whale’s back.

The two who were still conscious saw this. They were shocked, but saving their comrade was more important right now.

After CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the man coughed up water and finally came to. The other two slumped down, completely spent.

The only sounds were their ragged breaths and the rhythmic slap of whales on the water’s surface.

"How did you guys end up in the sea, too?"

"Thank you, little girl."

One of them managed to sit up, his face still pale, and gave Yun Jiao a military salute.

"Could you... help us with one more thing?"

From his explanation, Yun Jiao learned that the typhoon hadn’t just affected the coastal villages; the island where the navy was stationed had also been hit.

In fact, it was even worse. While trying to rescue the island’s residents, they had been swept into the sea by the wind.

A few residents and one of their comrades were still missing, carried off somewhere by the waves.

Yun Jiao nodded. "I understand. I’ll have my friends go look for them."

Yun Jiao considered blowing her whistle, but its sound wouldn’t travel far enough now.

So instead, she stood on the whale’s head and began to sing.

Though her voice was childish, it carried a special, piercing quality that could travel great distances, even through the ocean.

The three soldiers on the Humpback Whale’s back all stared at her. This scene was already a bit beyond their comprehension.

Soon, killer whales, dolphins, other Humpback Whales, and even sea turtles arrived.

"I’m counting on you all. We have to keep searching. Finding the missing people is the priority."

The massive creatures all called out in response before diving into the sea and vanishing without a trace.

"Do you want to head back first, or keep rescuing people?"

All three answered without hesitation, "Rescue people!"

’No matter how much their minds were reeling right now, saving lives came first.’

Thanks to the massive creatures’ efforts, word came back.

The Humpback Whale carried them in that direction.

Soon, they saw a pink dolphin swimming toward them, carrying an unconscious person on its back.

Even though the three soldiers were still weak, they all helped pull the person up.

It was a villager.

"He’s not breathing."

They administered first aid for some time, but there was still no response.

They had prepared for this possibility, but it was still heartbreaking to find someone who wasn’t breathing.

Yun Jiao announced, "They’ve found something else."

The three immediately pushed aside their grief, steeled themselves, and headed off in another direction.

This time, the discovery was on a fishing boat.

There were two people on the boat. They had likely found it adrift at sea; aside from the boat itself, they had no tools, so they could only stay on board and wait for rescue.

Fortunately, one of them was the three soldiers’ comrade.

When the two people on the boat saw them approaching on a Humpback Whale, their eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.

Before he could even feel happy, the villager on the boat saw the breathless person lying on the Humpback Whale’s back and burst into heart-wrenching sobs.

"Dad! That’s my dad!"

Yun Jiao thought, ’Well then. Talk about a twist of fate.’

But the man was already dead. No amount of grief could change that.

"You guys... what is going on here?"

After getting a grip on his emotions, the newly joined soldier wore an expression of bewilderment and shock.

The other three pointed at Yun Jiao. "That little girl saved us. This whale follows her commands, too."

At these words, everyone looked at Yun Jiao.

’What are they all looking at me for?’ Yun Jiao thought. ’I’m not going to explain. I couldn’t, anyway.’

The two also clambered onto the Humpback Whale.

Then they watched as Yun Jiao took a rope and dove headfirst into the sea.

She whistled, and a killer whale swam over. She skillfully tied the boat to the killer whale.

Then she summoned some dolphins.

While she was busy, the Humpback Whale seemed to casually smack the killer whale with its tail.

Not to be outdone, the killer whale rammed it back. The two massive creatures nearly started a fight, and two people on the Humpback Whale’s back rolled off.

Yun Jiao was speechless.

’As expected of mortal enemies. They start fighting the moment they see each other.’

"Stop fighting! Work first."

Yun Jiao gave each one a slap. The little girl could be surprisingly fierce.

And yet, it was this delicate little girl, as pretty as a porcelain doll, who had actually managed to tame the two tyrants of the sea.

"Take this back now."

Patting the killer whale’s head, Yun Jiao told it to leave.

Behind the boat, two dolphins helped push it along.

Their teamwork was already remarkably polished.

After Yun Jiao climbed back onto the Humpback Whale, an enthusiastic young soldier asked her.

"Where are they going?"

Yun Jiao replied, "A lot of our village’s boats were blown away. I came out to rescue people, but I’m also looking for boats. Whenever they find one, I have them take it back to our village."

Wu Yi exclaimed, "They even know the way?!"

Yun Jiao nodded. "They often play in the waters near our village, so of course they know the way."

"What’s your name, kid? We don’t even know it yet."

After all, she was their lifesaver.

"My name is Yun Jiao."

"Where do you live? When we get back, I’ll file a report with my squad leader and take some leave to come thank you properly."

Yun Jiao said, "Oh, you don’t have to."

"No, we must! I wouldn’t feel right otherwise."

The other men nodded in agreement.

Even the man who had just accepted his father’s death looked at Yun Jiao with red-rimmed eyes.

"Alright then. I live in Bailong Village. If you go there and ask around, you’ll be able to find my house."

All of them committed the name "Bailong Village" to memory.

Afterward, Yun Jiao led them crisscrossing the vast sea. They found a few more boats, but some were battered beyond repair and completely useless.
