The Ocean's Little Tyrant: A Mermaid Baby Conquers the 80s
Chapter 225: Selling Ambergris
Yun Jiao’s birthday had been wonderful, aside from that little episode in the evening.
The next day, while her Fifth Brothers went off to school, Yun Jiao was carried by her father as they went with her godfather to handle the bank transfer.
Looking at the long string of numbers in the passbook, Yun Jiao’s eyes curved into a smile.
"Daddy, we can buy a big boat now!"
She held up the passbook and placed it in front of Yun Linhai.
"A big boat, bigger than anyone else’s in the village!"
Yun Linhai himself had been staring blankly at that long string of numbers. He’d never seen so much money in his entire life!
Then, out of the blue, he heard his daughter say she wanted to buy him a boat.
"Huh?"
"A big boat," Yun Jiao said.
The simple and honest Yun Linhai scratched his head. "That... that’s not necessary."
’Using his daughter’s money to buy a boat... He felt so awkward about it.’
Yun Jiao pouted. "Am I not your daughter anymore?"
"Of course you are!" Yun Linhai immediately replied.
’He’d fight anyone who said otherwise.’
Yun Jiao nodded. "Then that settles it! I’m a good, filial daughter. I have money, so I should buy a big boat for Daddy!"
"A big boat will be more comfortable for Jiaojiao when we go out to sea."
"Jiaojiao isn’t playing favorites. I have to buy things for Mommy and Auntie, too. Daddy, what should you buy for them?"
"And I’ll buy a car for Third Brother and Fourth Brother, so Third Brother can drive himself to school."
"And a big golden bracelet for Grandma... wait, I think she already has one. Then I’ll get them a big house."
"And Grandpa and Grandma, and Uncle and Auntie, and my cousins..."
Yun Linhai covered her chattering mouth. "That’s enough! If you keep buying things like this, you’ll spend all the money!"
’Buy, buy, buy...’
At her strong insistence, Yun Linhai ended up buying another huge pile of things to take home.
Food, clothes, daily necessities... With spring arriving, they bought a whole new wardrobe.
Yun Jiao stood in front of a brand-new motorcycle. "Daddy, do you want it?"
Hearing her, Yun Linhai immediately averted his gaze from the motorcycle.
"No, no. Daughter, please don’t buy any more."
"Besides, I don’t even know how to ride it."
"Then you can learn, Daddy," Yun Jiao said.
She tugged on her father’s hand. "If I weren’t so little, I’d learn to ride it myself!"
"Every time we leave the village, the tractor ride makes my butt sore from all the bumping."
Yun Linhai was speechless.
In the end, after Yun Jiao’s relentless persuasion, they decided on the motorcycle.
First, they had to withdraw the cash.
After the purchase was complete, Yun Linhai was still in a daze as he looked at the motorcycle before him.
Sun Yaotong, standing beside him, clapped his shoulder. "If you don’t know how to ride, I can have someone teach you. And don’t feel bad about the money. If I had a daughter who spent money on me like this, I’d be over the moon."
Yun Linhai smiled sheepishly. He just felt unsettled.
"What kind of grown man spends his own daughter’s money?"
"Sigh, it just doesn’t feel right."
Sun Yaotong nodded. "I get it. But money is meant to be spent. You may be the ones riding the motorcycle, but it’s Jiaojiao who will be more comfortable. Doesn’t that make you feel a bit better? As for the boat, I know someone at a shipyard. When you’re ready to buy, just write me a letter, and I’ll put you in touch."
’He’d actually wanted to say ’give me a call,’ but it seemed Bailong Village didn’t have any phones.’
Yun Jiao’s eyes crinkled into a smile. "Thank you, Godfather!"
A young man from the shop helped by riding the motorcycle to the village for them.
Meanwhile, Yun Linhai and Yun Jiao rode home in Sun Yaotong’s car.
When they arrived home, Mr. Mu and his friend were there.
The motorcycle’s engine was loud, drawing everyone from inside the house as soon as it arrived.
"Who’s this young man?"
Grandpa Yun asked, his eyes filled with confusion.
Yun Jiao raised her little hand. "Grandpa, Uncle, the motorcycle belongs to our family! I bought it!"
Her voice was crisp and clear, and the pride in her tone was unmistakable.
Yun Linhe jumped to his feet. "What? It’s ours?"
Yun Chen Nan was also astonished. "Jiaojiao, you bought it?"
Yun Jiao tilted her chin up, a proud little expression on her face.
"Yep, yep! I have money, so I bought it for the family. From now on, we can ride the motorcycle instead of taking the tractor. My butt hurts from all the bumps."
The young man who had just finished parking the motorcycle stared with wide eyes.
’What? The kid bought it?’
’He’d assumed the man had been the one to buy it.’
’But seeing everyone’s reactions, the kid wasn’t lying.’
Instantly, the young man’s expression turned to one of pure envy as he looked at the family.
’Please give me a daughter like that, too!’
Hearing the motorcycle was theirs, Yun Linhe didn’t hold back. He circled the brand-new vehicle, his hands constantly caressing this and that, the grin on his face impossible to suppress.
Yun Linhe was much more accepting of the gift than Yun Linhai. He patted the motorcycle and said to Yun Jiao,
"Jiaojiao, once your uncle learns how to ride this, I’ll take you for a spin wherever you want to go!"
Yun Jiao replied cheerfully, "Okay!"
’That’s exactly what I was hoping for,’ she thought.
After dropping them off, Sun Yaotong announced he had to leave.
"If you want to learn to ride, I’ll introduce you to someone who can teach you. We have to head back today. Jiaojiao, whenever you come to Hang City, be sure to visit my place."
Yun Jiao nodded. "Okay, I will, Godfather."
Granny Yun asked, "You’re really not staying for a meal? At least eat a little before you go."
Sun Yaotong explained that their train was leaving soon, and they needed to go back and get their things ready.
After seeing them off, the family returned home, had lunch, and then got down to business.
Yun Chenbei carefully carried out the box containing the ambergris.
When the box was opened and the ambergris was placed on the table, the eyes of Mr. Mu’s friend, Old Wu, immediately lit up.
He took a magnifying glass from an inner pocket and began examining the ambergris meticulously.
"I’ve never seen such a large piece of ambergris before. And the quality is incredible."
’His old friend really hadn’t been kidding!’
The Yun family watched him nervously.
"Brother Yun," Old Wu began, "I run an honest business. And since you’re friends of Old Mu, we’re practically family, so I’ll be straight with you. For ambergris of this quality and size, the most I can offer you is this much per gram."
Old Wu gestured with a "three" and then a "five."
Mr. Mu interjected from the side, "Can’t you go any higher? This stuff is a once-in-a-lifetime find. You could make a fortune selling it as perfume abroad."
Old Wu rolled his eyes in exasperation. "You old dog, Old Mu! After all our years of friendship, you still don’t trust me?"
"You can’t fleece me just for the sake of your precious protégé, can you?"
"Three hundred and fifty yuan a gram. I’m telling you, no matter who you ask, that’s the highest price you’ll get. Of course, if you could get this piece of ambergris into an overseas auction, you might get more money. But there are risks involved with those kinds of auctions, especially since public safety abroad isn’t always great. So, the choice is yours."
’Take it to an overseas auction?’
The Yun family wouldn’t even dare to consider it.
They weren’t that brave, nor did they have the right connections.
Yun Jiao didn’t want to go through all that trouble either.
"Grandpa Wu, we’ll sell it to you."
