The Ocean's Little Tyrant: A Mermaid Baby Conquers the 80s
Chapter 174: Where Did This Dumbass Come From?
Just as expected, the drama at Yun Dafu’s house was in full swing.
By the time Yun Jiao got there, the two families were already fighting.
A crowd was gathered three deep outside Yun Dafu’s house. Yun Jiao was too small; even on her tiptoes, she couldn’t see what was happening inside.
She had no choice but to find a way to squeeze through the gaps between the adults’ legs.
’To get the latest scoop, she was really giving it her all.’
"Excuse me, excuse me! Don’t step on me."
Her efforts paid off. Within a few minutes, she had squeezed her way to the very front.
So as not to be left behind, her two chubby little puppies followed close at her heels.
Being even smaller, it was much easier for them to wiggle through.
By now, Yun Jiao’s clothes were wrinkled and her neatly combed hair was a mess.
But she didn’t care. Her eyes sparkled as she gazed at the scene inside.
Yun Dafu’s house was also made of blue brick and tile and had a large courtyard. At this moment, inside the courtyard, Yun Dafu’s sister-in-law and her family were kneeling on the ground, sobbing as they tried to guilt-trip him.
"He’s your own nephew! How can you be so heartless and watch him get locked up? He made a mistake, but he’s still a child! And he didn’t take all the money himself. You know Xiao Rui—he’s usually such a good kid. The other two must have put him up to it..."
"You have to go to the police station and sign that... that forgiveness letter! Xiao Rui is so young, how can he be locked up? We’re all family. You can’t just stand by and watch something happen to him."
"It’s just a little money! Don’t you always brag about how rich your family is? Why make such a huge fuss over this? He’s only seventeen! If he gets a criminal record for this, how is he supposed to get married and live his life?"
Yun Dafu’s family was furious.
Especially Yun Dafu. It was true he loved showing off his wealth, but he was an even bigger miser.
He was the type to flatly refuse relatives who asked to borrow money. And now they had not only stolen from his home but also given him a good beating. This, he could not tolerate.
"Fine! You want your son out? Then give me back the three thousand yuan that was stolen from my house! And you’ll pay for my medical bills for these injuries, not one cent less! Ptooey... And you call yourselves relatives? Relatives who bring outsiders to my house to steal from me and beat me, their uncle-in-law? I can’t afford relatives like you!"
"Three thousand yuan! Why don’t you just go rob someone?!?"
The sister-in-law’s family erupted. "It’s not like our Xiao Rui stole the money all by himself! Why should our family pay the full three thousand? Besides, Xiao Rui wasn’t the one who hit you! We’re supposed to be family, and you’re trying to swindle us like this? Yun Dafu, you’re too heartless!"
"But it was your son who brought outsiders to steal the money! Let me tell you, if you don’t pay it back, don’t even think about him getting out!"
The two sides argued more and more fiercely over the money, completely ignoring the crowd of outsiders watching the show.
Yun Jiao nibbled on sunflower seeds, watching with great relish.
She even fed a few shelled seeds to her two little puppies.
She was multitasking—her eyes fixed on the people in the courtyard, her ears pricked to their argument, while also listening to the discussions of the onlookers.
"Seventeen and still a ’child’? That’s a load of bull. At that age, you can be looking for a partner and getting married."
CRUNCH, CRUNCH...
Yun Jiao nodded while cracking her seeds. ’Exactly!’
"Three thousand yuan... Do they really think they can get forgiven just by saying a few words and kowtowing? Life isn’t that easy."
’Right, right,’ Yun Jiao thought. ’No one would be stupid enough to think they have to be forgiven just because the others are kowtowing, would they?’
But as it turned out, someone that stupid did exist.
Yun Jiao watched as an old woman walked up to mediate.
"Dafu, you’re all relatives, one big family. You can’t gamble with a child’s future. Just let the boy out, have him kowtow and apologize, and let’s call it even."
’...Wow, a weirdo like that really does exist,’ Yun Jiao thought.
’I’ve learned something new today.’
Yun Dafu’s face turned green. He didn’t care that she was an elder and shot back directly.
"Call it even?! That’s three thousand yuan we’re talking about!"
The old woman adopted a lecturing tone. "Money and possessions are worldly things. How can they be more important than family? We can’t put so much stock in material possessions. Look, they’re kowtowing to you, how pitiful. The boy is still locked up. The first priority has to be getting him out."
Yun Jiao was bewildered. ’Who is this?’
Yun Jiao soon found out, as the crowd started murmuring.
"Yun Dafu’s got some bad luck, running into the unreasonable, bleeding-heart Granny Yuan."
From their discussion, Yun Jiao learned about the old woman’s "great achievements."
This was a do-gooder who was generous at others’ expense. To put it bluntly, she was a sanctimonious bitch.
She was a Buddhist who considered herself a good person and loved meddling in other people’s business. Typically, she would side with whoever seemed weaker, for no logical reason at all.
She had done things like giving away her family’s grain to vagrants and inviting strangers into her home for meals.
She did these things thinking she was being kind and generous, but her family was tormented by her actions and suffered immensely.
She also felt her own maiden family was very poor, so she would often use her marital family’s resources to help them out.
It had been better when her parents-in-law were alive to keep her in check. With them gone, she had let herself go completely.
Messing up her own family’s affairs was one thing, but she also meddled in others’.
For example, there was a man who often beat his wife after drinking. One time, the wife couldn’t take it anymore and went back to her family, bringing her brothers back to teach her husband a lesson. The man immediately knelt and begged for mercy.
When Granny Yuan saw this, she went in and scolded the wife and her family, saying things like, "Her husband already knows he’s wrong, yet you still won’t forgive him. You’re pushing your luck, being petty and unforgiving!"
Another time, a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law were fighting. It was clearly the mother-in-law who was being too harsh, but the unreasonable Granny Yuan blamed the daughter-in-law, saying things like, "All women go through this. You must respect your elders."
After hearing all this, Yun Jiao was......
’Seriously, where did this fucking idiot come from?’
Over there, Granny Yuan was still babbling on. It was impossible to reason with her; she had a logic all her own.
In the end, she pushed Yun Dafu over the edge, and he shoved her.
Granny Yuan let out a cry and fell to the ground.
"Ow! Yun Dafu, you pushed me, an old woman! I was kindly advising you, all for your own good, and you resort to violence? You’re really a piece of work..."
Holding her two puppies, Yun Jiao couldn’t help but mutter, "I really want to punch her."
Even though Granny Yuan wasn’t talking to her, her twisted logic was enough to make any bystander’s blood boil.
"This Granny Yuan, she’s a real shit-stirrer!"
Someone declared.
Yun Jiao nodded. ’Yep, that’s right.’
’But wait, if Granny Yuan is the shit-stirrer, doesn’t that make Yun Dafu and the others...’
’Er...’
Yun Dafu was seeing red. He pointed at Granny Yuan and roared, "What kind of elder are you to me? Since you’re so high and mighty and want me to forgive them, why don’t you have the guts to pay back the three thousand yuan for them!"
Granny Yuan retorted, "I wasn’t the one who stole the money. Why should I give you any?"
Yun Dafu: "Then shut your mouth! This is between our two families, what’s it got to do with you!"
"You... How can you treat an old woman like me this way? They’re your family!"
