The More I Invest in My Wives, the Stronger I Become

Chapter 102: The Green Flame and the Burning Shadow

Kaine’s eyes narrowed.

Roxanna stood across the rooftop with the shaft raised high. Thick green life energy coiled around the tip in tight, rising circles, bright enough to paint the night air.

The wind pulled toward her as if the energy itself was drawing breath. The concrete under her boots trembled faintly from the pressure. Sparks of green light drifted off the staff and vanished into the dark like dying embers.

Kaine had collected reports on her long before this night.

SS-Rank. Healer type. Not combat-focused. Someone who awakened through rarity, not through blood-soaked battlefields. On paper, she should not have been this much trouble.

Capturing her should have been clean and quick. A few subordinates, a short fight, and the job would be finished before the city even noticed.

But the pressure coming off that staff told him otherwise.

If he wanted to end this properly, he would need his werewolf form.

He exhaled through his teeth.

Every time he transformed, people died. Detectives, cops, and hunters started digging harder. Unwanted attention followed him like a shadow he could never fully shake.

He already had enough of that problem hanging over his organization. One more public incident and the heat would become unbearable. The last thing he needed was another tower full of witnesses and phone cameras.

Still...

He had already sent her picture to the lord.

And the lord had liked her.

As a human who awakened to SS-Rank without outside help, she was rare enough to be admired. Valuable. Useful. And if the lord took interest in someone, Kaine knew better than to guess what would happen next.

That man did not collect ordinary things. He collected power, potential, and people who could be shaped into something greater under his control.

Better not to kill her.

That was the smart choice.

Before he could transform, Roxanna moved.

The green energy blasted from the tip of her shaft in a dense wave of pure force. It tore across the rooftop with a sharp, living pressure that made the air scream.

The light was so bright it turned the night green for a full second. Even the city glow below seemed to dim under it. The blast did not feel like ordinary magic. It felt alive.

Two werewolves leapt between them on instinct, trying to block it.

They never had a chance.

The life energy hit them head-on. Their bodies did not simply burn. They vanished into thin air in a flash of green flame, reduced to nothing before they could even cry out.

Fur, bone, and flesh disappeared in the same instant. The rooftop where they had stood was scorched clean, black marks left behind like scars burned into stone.

Kaine’s eyes widened.

He threw Garrick aside and transformed in the same breath.

Skin split. Black fur burst outward. Muscle expanded with a wet, violent sound. Claws lengthened. His human shape broke apart into a massive werewolf form as he dodged the edge of the blast.

Even so, the explosion still caught him. The impact tore across the rooftop where he had been standing, sending cracked concrete and green fire into the night sky. The force threw dust and broken debris toward the edge of the building.

The blast was seen from nearby buildings.

People in apartments turned toward the tower in shock. Glass windows rattled hard enough that some cracked. Curtains blew inward. Down below, on the streets, heads lifted as green flames spread across the top of the skyscraper like a second sunrise.

Drivers slowed. Pedestrians stopped mid-step. A few people pointed. Others already had their phones raised, filming without understanding what they were recording.

Reports started flooding in.

Cops. Hunters. Emergency lines.

On the rooftop, Kaine landed hard and wiped blood from the corner of his mouth. The impact had not hit him cleanly, but it had still hurt. He smirked through the pain, sharp teeth flashing under the green light still fading in the air.

"You’re quite strong."

Garrick, still recovering against the wall, stared at Roxanna with pure shock. Her strength was on another level. This was not the same woman he used to know. The quiet healer who once lowered her head in their old apartment was gone.

In her place stood someone who could erase werewolves from existence with a single blast. For the first time, he understood just how far she had climbed without him. Pride and shame mixed in his chest until neither one felt clean.

Kaine finished the transformation fully.

Black fur covered his body. His muscles tightened like living armor. Nails and teeth sharpened into weapons. He stood opposite Roxanna, taller and heavier than the lesser werewolves she had already killed.

The rooftop felt smaller under his presence. The night wind pushed against his fur as he lowered his stance and locked his glowing eyes on her.

"Don’t think of me as a normal one," he said.

Then he vanished.

He reappeared behind her in a blur and struck her back with full force.

Roxanna’s body jerked. Pain exploded through her spine. Blood sprayed from the wound as she dropped to one knee.

Her eyes fluttered. More blood formed at the corner of her mouth and dripped onto the concrete, dark under the city lights. The shaft nearly slipped from her fingers, but she forced her grip to hold.

Kaine vanished again.

This time he struck her side.

Then her shoulder.

Then her leg.

Each hit was fast, precise, and poisoned. Roxanna could feel it immediately. The toxin was stronger than ordinary venom. It burned under her skin and crawled toward her core like liquid fire. Even with her Lifeweaver power, full purification would take time she did not have.

Every time she forced healing through her body, the poison fought back, slowing her recovery and draining her strength.

She could not rest.

She could not fully cleanse.

And Kaine knew it.

He kept vanishing and striking, never giving her enough space to stabilize. Green light flickered weakly around her wounds as she tried again and again to hold herself together.

Her breathing grew heavier. Her vision blurred at the edges. The shaft in her hands trembled as she used it to stay upright. Every second cost her more energy than the last. The poison made each breath feel thicker than the one before it.

Garrick could not stand.

He had already returned to human form, body broken and useless after Kaine’s earlier punch. All he could do was watch Roxanna struggle while blood pooled under her knees.

His fingers scraped against the concrete, but his legs refused to move. The pain in his body was nothing compared to the weight in his chest.

This is because of me, he thought bitterly.

If I never asked her to come to that apartment... if I never dragged her into this mess... none of this would be happening.

He blamed himself with every second that passed. The guilt sat heavier than his injuries. He had wanted power. He had wanted control.

He had accepted the organization’s offer because it promised him strength and a cure. Now the only person still standing for him was the woman he had failed the most.

Kaine glanced at him and laughed under his breath.

"Don’t worry, bro. I won’t kill her. She’s too valuable. But my lord can do whatever he wants."

He raised one long, sharp nail toward Roxanna. City light reflected off the poisoned tip.

"This is almost over."

Roxanna was still breathing hard, forcing air in and out, buying herself any second she could. She only needed time. Just a little time to force the poison back and stand properly again.

Her fingers tightened around the shaft until her knuckles turned white. Green light struggled to form again around the wounds, weak but still refusing to die.

Kaine roared and launched toward her.

Then he stopped mid-charge.

His body locked as if an invisible wall had slammed into his chest.

A pressure unlike anything from Roxanna filled the rooftop.

It was heavy.

Cold.

Absolute.

The same kind of presence Kaine always felt when standing in front of his lord — the kind that made lesser men drop to their knees without understanding why.

His fur bristled. His instincts screamed. Every muscle in his transformed body wanted to step back.

His eyes darted around wildly.

Where is this coming from?

Then he saw them.

Eyes burning like living flame inside the darkness.

A shadow formed into a human silhouette above the rooftop. Fire crawled across the figure’s shoulders and arms in black and orange waves. His face burned with the same living flame.

Most of his upper clothes had already been destroyed by the heat, leaving him in only what remained of his pants. He hovered in the air without sound, without effort, like the night itself had chosen to take shape and look down on them.

The flames did not roar.

They simply existed — quiet, controlled, and terrifying.

Kaine swallowed hard.

He did not attack.

He only stared for one frozen second — then immediately called for backup.
