Chapter 1169. I Own the Underlayer, the Corridor, and the Last Year of Your Life
Chapter 1169: 1169. I Own the Underlayer, the Corridor, and the Last Year of Your Life
Apollo collapsed inward, pressing both palms against his face as if he could physically squeeze the revelations out of his brain. His breathing was shallow, ragged gasps that sounded like tearing parchment.
The world was tilting; the ground beneath him felt like it was dissolving into static.
"And the emergency council," Rex continued, his voice cutting through Apollo’s self-imposed silence like a scalpel.
He showed no mercy, no pause for Apollo to catch his breath. "The session where Morwenna stood up, her face flushed with righteous fury, and accused me directly of being Tremor."
"She was correct... She was the only one in that entire room with enough spine and enough intellect to assemble the pieces properly."
Rex let out a soft, almost fond hum. "And what happened, Apollo?"
"Do you remember? I sat there, calm as a saint, while Elizabeth, Aurelia, and you rose to my defense."
"You argued for my innocence with such conviction it was almost touching..."
"By the time the gavel fell, Valentina had formally cleared me of all suspicion... That was the single most enjoyable hour of my life." Rex’s voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. "Four separate people whom I had personally ruined, whom I had personally slaughtered, stood up one after another to explain why I couldn’t possibly be responsible."
"The one person telling the truth was shouted down by the very people I had broken."
"Stop." Apollo’s voice was a broken wheeze.
"Then you said Celestina’s name out loud," Rex said, ignoring the plea. "The entire network buckled... Panic set in... And then I stepped in."
"I gave a speech, a beautiful, rousing speech that stitched the network back together. And afterward?"
"Everyone thanked me... They thanked me for saving the meeting."
"For being their rock in the storm." Rex’s mouth curved into a grotesque parody of a smile. "I have been thanked, Apollo... formally... and even publicly."
"I have received commendations for cleaning up every single mess I created."
"I said stop!" Apollo screamed, the sound tearing from his lungs, raw and bleeding.
He looked up, his face a mask of agony and hatred, blood dripping from a split lip onto his chest. "Make it stop, Rex! Please!"
"You asked for the scale, Apollo," Rex said, his violet eyes flaring with sudden, terrifying intensity. "I am giving you the scale..."
"Do not beg for mercy when you asked for understanding."
Rex’s tone shifted then.
The cruelty remained, but it was layered with something almost... tender. A perverse sense of pride.
"And then there was Theo."
Rex paused, tilting his head as if reminiscing about a cherished childhood memory. "That one... that was my masterpiece..."
"I took him apart over the course of a month... But not with blades, not with fire..."
"No, that would have been too simple... I took his life apart piece by piece."
"I dismantled his standing in his household, his position as heir, his grandmother’s affection, his aunt’s trust, his mother’s attention, and Diana’s."
A shudder passed through Rex’s frame. "I removed them one by one, making each loss seem like nothing more than a cruel twist of natural consequence rather than a calculated campaign."
"By the end of that month, he was standing at the edge of the eastern cliff with absolutely nothing left—no family, no future, no self..."
"And he stepped off. He chose the fall."
Rex’s eyes darkened, the violet light bleeding into the black. "Kaeleth caught him on the way down."
"The god saw a broken boy and handed him a designation because a desperate deity needed a disposable weapon."
"And what did I do, Apollo...? I beat that weapon."
"I broke what Kaeleth made."
Rex took a step closer, the magical pressure in the domain becoming so heavy that Apollo felt his bones creak under the weight of the air itself. "Then I went into Kaeleth’s domain."
"I fought him, I broke him, and I reached into his chest with my own bare hands and tore his temporal authority over Aethelgard right out of his soul."
"I’ve been holding it quietly ever since... Nobody on the surface has any idea."
Rex leaned down, his breath cold against Apollo’s ear. "The entire city, every heartbeat, every sunrise, every passing second... the whole city runs on borrowed time."
"And that time belongs to me."
The silence that followed was not empty; it was heavy, a physical weight that pressed down on Apollo like the depths of an ocean. It was a suffocating, pressurized quiet that rang in his ears.
Apollo looked like a man drowning in an endless sea of poisoned information. His pupils were blown wide, unfocused, and darting erratically as his brain tried and failed to reconcile the Rex he loved with the monster standing before him.
His breathing had become a series of wet, irregular spasms. His ribs screamed with every shallow inhalation, the bone fragments grinding together like broken glass in his chest.
Rex let him suffer in that silence for several agonizing seconds. He wanted Apollo to feel the full weight of the void before he filled it with more horror.
Then, with terrifying grace, Rex stepped closer. He crouched down until their eyes were level, forcing Apollo to meet that violet, inhuman gaze.
This proximity was intimate, almost tender, which made the words all the more devastating.
"The Underlayer," Apollo said suddenly.
His head jerked up, a spark of desperate, dying fire flickering in his eyes. "You said you were allied with them."
"Out there, in the corridor... you told me you came from below..."
"Was that—"
"I don’t just ally with them, Apollo," Rex interrupted, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "I own it... they’re all my bitch."
He said it with the casual detachment of a man mentioning a piece of property he held in a portfolio. "And of course... completely."
"Mordecai kneels to me like a lowly pest... Every survivor of the purge... the purge that systematically erased anyone who refused to bend kneels to me."
"Down there, in the dark, they whisper the name Lord Xerollion..."
"The man you’ve been fighting for the last half hour, the one you think is some rogue warlord?"
"He is merely my instrument... He is the supreme authority of two hundred thousand souls who have never once seen my actual face."
Rex leaned in closer, the violet glow from his eyes casting dancing, demonic shadows across Apollo’s pale skin. "The army standing out there in that corridor right now, the one your soldiers are bleeding to hold back?"
"That is mine. I ordered them into position."
"I designed the very geometry of the corridor you’re standing in."
"Every angle, every choke point, every tactical advantage—it was all calculated by me."
"The Key." Apollo’s voice had gone utterly flat, the sound of a man who had already died inside. "Elizabeth’s Key..."
"The artifact that saved us from the breach."
"Built to my specifications," Rex said with a delighted chuckle. "Using materials I personally sourced and supplied."
"It opened at an anchor point I calibrated myself, while Elizabeth watched me work, thanking me for my ’strategic insight.’"
"Your entire army marched through a door I built, into a corridor I chose, to fight a force I command."
Rex’s smile widened, revealing teeth that seemed too white, too perfect. "You have been inside my plan since the morning you stood on that platform and gave your speech."
"Every decision you made today, every order you shouted, every soldier you positioned to defend this ground—it wasn’t courage, Apollo... It was obedience."
"You were simply taking the steps I laid down for you in advance."
Apollo made a small, broken sound, a whimper that died before it could become a word. His hands clutched at the violet ground, his fingernails cracking against the pulsing surface.
He felt small. He felt like an insect caught in a web, realizing too late that the spider hadn’t been hunting it; it had been playing with its food.
Rex crouched directly in front of him again, elbows resting on his knees in a posture of casual relaxation, as if they were two old friends sharing drinks in a tavern rather than a god killer and a broken hero in a realm of madness.
"And now," Rex said, his voice dropping to a quiet, almost compassionate murmur, "we come to the part I know is going to hurt you the most."
"The part that will finally break what’s left of your mind."
He paused, letting the tension coil like a spring between them.
"Veylor... Calivara... Eryndra..." Rex spoke their names like sacred relics. "All three of them died by my hand... directly."
"No proxies. No elaborate accidents. No poisoned wine or staged ambushes."
"I stood before them... I looked them in the eye... And I killed them personally."
"And I want you to understand something, Apollo..." Rex’s expression became terrifyingly blank. "I did not hesitate... Not once..."
"With any of them."
