The beasts eventually gave up.

Their growls faded into the distance as the night deepened, leaving only the low groan of settling ice and the sound of two people trying to remember how to breathe.

Arthur reinforced the frost barrier with a tired pulse of mana and turned back toward the woman still braced against the cave wall.

Seraphina had not moved to cover herself.

Her torn white robes hung open, one sleeve ripped completely free. Pale skin glowed faintly in the dim light of her own eyes.

His seed streaked the inside of her thigh. The arrogant set of her shoulders had not fully returned. She looked wrecked and furious about it.

"Do not look at me like that," she said, voice rough.

"Like what?"

"Like you have won something."

Arthur stepped closer. The cave left her nowhere to retreat. He braced one hand on the stone beside her head and used the other to tilt her chin up.

"I did not realize this was a competition."

Seraphina’s golden eyes narrowed, but the usual divine heat behind them had softened into something more complicated.

She did not slap his hand away. After a long second she exhaled through her nose and let her head rest back against the wall.

"This was a mistake," she muttered. "A moment of weakness caused by adrenaline and proximity. Nothing more."

"Then why are you still wet?"

Her breath caught. Arthur’s fingers slid down her stomach and between her legs, confirming what he already knew.

Seraphina’s thighs trembled, but she did not close them. A soft, involuntary sound escaped her when he stroked through the mess he had left inside her.

"Arthur—"

"You can still tell me to stop."

She stared at him. Pride warred with the flush spreading down her neck and chest. In the end she reached up, fisted a hand in his dark hair, and dragged his mouth back to hers.

This kiss was slower.

Less teeth. More heat. Seraphina kissed him like she was still deciding whether she hated the taste of him.

Arthur answered by pressing her harder into the stone and sliding two fingers back inside her.

She moaned into his mouth, hips rolling forward to meet the intrusion.

The frantic edge from earlier had burned away, leaving something heavier and more dangerous underneath.

He worked her open with patient strokes until her breathing turned uneven.

When he finally pulled his fingers free she made a quiet, frustrated noise that sounded nothing like a Saintess.

Arthur turned her around to face the wall. Seraphina braced her hands against the rough stone without being told.

He lifted the ruined skirts of her robes, gripped her hip, and pushed into her from behind in one smooth thrust.

Both of them groaned.

The angle was deeper this time. Seraphina’s back arched. Her silver hair spilled over one shoulder as she dropped her head forward.

Arthur set a steady rhythm, less punishing than before but just as thorough. Every stroke dragged a soft, broken sound out of her. The wet noise of their joining filled the small cave.

"You feel different when you stop pretending you do not want this," he said against her ear.

"I am not—" Her voice fractured as he thrust particularly deep. "I am not pretending."

"Liar."

He reached around and found her clit, rubbing tight circles in time with his hips. Seraphina’s arms shook.

She pushed back to meet him, pride temporarily abandoned in favor of friction. The golden light in her eyes flickered against the stone wall with every impact.

"Harder," she whispered.

Arthur gave it to her.

He fucked her with long, powerful strokes that forced her up onto her toes. One of her hands left the wall and reached back blindly until she found his wrist and held on.

The cave air grew warmer from the heat pouring off her skin. Residual holy mana sparked faintly wherever their bodies met, reacting to the intensity without quite becoming an attack.

Seraphina came with a muffled cry, forehead pressed to her forearm, body clenching hard around him.

Arthur gritted his teeth and rode her through it, slowing only when the worst of the spasms faded.

He did not pull out. Instead he wrapped an arm around her waist and carefully guided them both down until she was on her hands and knees on the scattered fabric of her ruined cloak.

She looked back at him over her shoulder. Silver hair stuck to her damp cheeks. Her golden eyes were heavy-lidded and stripped of their usual superiority.

"Still a mistake?" he asked.

Seraphina held his gaze for a long moment. Then she pushed her hips back, taking him deeper.

"Shut up and move."

He did.

This round was slower, deeper, almost exploratory.

Arthur covered her with his body, one hand braced beside hers on the ground, the other sliding beneath her to cup a full breast.

He rolled her nipple between his fingers while he rocked into her with measured force. Seraphina’s breathing turned ragged.

She met every thrust, the earlier anger melting into something closer to need.

"You are infuriating," she panted. "Cold. Ruthless. Completely without reverence."

"And yet."

"And yet." The admission sounded dragged out of her. "Do not stop."

Arthur kissed the side of her neck, then bit down just hard enough to make her gasp. His pace increased.

The wet slap of skin echoed off the cave walls. Seraphina’s arms finally gave out.

She dropped to her elbows, ass still raised, and moaned freely into the fabric of her cloak as he drove into her.

When she came the second time it was quieter but longer.

Her body trembled through wave after wave while Arthur held her hips in place and kept moving.

The way she fluttered and clenched around him dragged him right to the edge.

He buried himself deep and finished with a low groan, spilling into her again while she shuddered underneath him.

They collapsed onto the makeshift bedding of torn silk and wool. For a while the only sound was cooling breath and the distant wind outside the ice wall.

Seraphina lay on her side facing him. The divine radiance in her eyes had dimmed to a soft glow.

Without the constant armor of her title she looked younger, almost uncertain. Arthur reached out and brushed a strand of silver hair away from her mouth. She did not stop him.

"This cannot leave the cave," she said eventually. Her voice was quieter than he had ever heard it. "When we return to civilization I am still the Saintess-Elect. You are still... whatever you are. The Church would not understand. My people would not understand."

"I was not planning to announce it."

She studied his face in the gloom. "You used me."

"We used each other."

A faint, reluctant curve touched the corner of her mouth—almost a smile, gone before it could fully form.

She shifted closer despite herself, drawn to the residual cold of his body in the warm cave.

Arthur let her settle against his chest. Her skin was still fever-hot. The contrast made her shiver once.

Outside, the night remained quiet. The tracking beasts had moved on.

Inside the sealed cave, the air smelled of sex and spent mana and the strange, fragile truce forming between two people who were never supposed to touch.

Seraphina’s fingers rested lightly against his ribs, right above an old scar.

"If you tell anyone I allowed this," she murmured, already half drifting, "I will incinerate you."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"Go to sleep, Your Holiness."

She made a soft, offended sound at the title, but her breathing evened out soon after. The last of the hostility had burned down into exhausted, complicated quiet.
