The Lust Grimoire: I Steal Magic By Fulfilling Her Desires

Chapter 51: Last Night Before the Descent

  • Next Chapter

The final day of preparation passed in a blur of controlled violence.

Arthur spent the morning on the Dawn platform running the same group that had attached itself to him, but the drills had changed. He no longer focused on fundamentals. He forced every student to fight while deliberately short on mana, while half-blinded by soft light bombs, while carrying the weight of a second person’s collapsed form. The dungeon would not give clean conditions. He refused to let them practice as if it would.

Julian’s group trained on the opposite side of the platform. The lightning user’s methods were harsher and less patient. More than one of his students left the grounds early with numb arms and stunned expressions. Neither captain interfered with the other. There was no friendship between them, only the shared understanding that tomorrow would measure both.

Iris did not appear until nearly midday.

When she finally arrived she looked worse than the day before. The careful makeup she used to hide her fatigue had thinned. Dark smudges sat under her violet eyes. She moved with her usual precision, but there was a fractional delay in some of her reactions, as if part of her attention remained inside her Grimoire. Arthur watched her apply a recorded dream of sudden weightlessness to avoid a low sweep and then nearly stumble when the effect ended. She caught herself before anyone else noticed.

During a short water break he stepped beside her.

"When did you last sleep through the night?"

Iris wiped the edge of her mouth with the back of her hand. "I sleep."

"That’s not an answer."

She looked at him sideways. For a moment the perfect mask slipped and he saw raw exhaustion underneath. Then it returned.

"After tomorrow it won’t matter," she said. "I’ll sleep when the forty names are posted."

She walked back to her training spot before he could reply.

Mimi’s voice was uncharacteristically quiet inside his head.

"She’s past the safe limit, Master. Whatever she’s been stacking, the book is starting to push back. I can hear it complaining even from here."

Arthur finished the morning session with a final free-spar circuit and dismissed the group. Most of them looked terrified and determined in equal measure. A few thanked him. Most simply left to eat and try to force more last-minute practice into the remaining hours.

Afternoon classes were cancelled entirely for registered participants. The academy had stopped pretending that normal curriculum mattered for the next two days.

Arthur used the time to refine one specific interaction: layering a thin skin of Frost Sovereign over Mana Skin so that any physical strike that landed would lose heat and momentum at the moment of contact. It was mana-efficient and brutal in prolonged fights. He practiced the timing until the transition became automatic.

Evening came early behind heavy cloud.

Selene sent no messenger. She simply appeared at the edge of the private training wing when he arrived, already in her close-fitting training clothes, silver-white hair braided tightly down her back. The chamber sealed behind them with a low hum of privacy wards.

"Again," she said. "From the top. I want to see the frost layer form while you are already under pressure."

They worked for nearly two hours.

Selene attacked with controlled ice lances, pressure bursts, and sudden temperature drops that tried to disrupt his concentration. Arthur defended, countered, and forced the Frost Sovereign layer to activate at the exact moment of impact.

Each successful exchange made the next one cleaner. Sweat eventually cut tracks through the light frost that formed on his collarbones. Selene’s breathing remained steady, but the intensity of her strikes increased as the session wore on, as if she were trying to burn the techniques into his body through sheer repetition.

When she finally stepped back, both of them were flushed and breathing harder than the chamber’s cool air could quickly settle.

"Enough," she said. "Any more and you’ll enter the dungeon with pathway strain."

Arthur dismissed the last of the frost and rolled his shoulders. The silence that followed was different from the training silence. Selene’s ice-blue eyes moved across his face, then lower, then back up. The residual traces of frostbite still lived in her pathways. Both of them knew it. Both of them had felt how much cleaner her magic became each time those traces were reduced.

She was the one who stepped closer first.

The dual cultivation began with less formality than previous nights. There was an edge of urgency that had nothing to do with poison and everything to do with the knowledge that tomorrow one of them would enter a place designed to kill the unprepared. Clothes were pushed aside. Skin met skin with the familiarity of repeated nights and the sharpened attention of people who understood this might be the last calm contact they would have for some time.

Selene guided his hands to the places where the remaining frostbite sat deepest — along the major pathways that ran beneath her ribs and down her spine. Arthur poured Eros mana in steady, controlled currents. The pink-gold energy sought the frozen knots, wrapped them, and slowly melted the damage into usable affinity. Selene’s breath caught each time a significant trace dissolved. Her fingers dug into his shoulders. The bond between them, already deeper than simple physical release, tightened another fraction.

They moved together with focused intensity rather than desperation. Every shift of hips, every shared breath, every controlled pulse of mana served the dual purpose of pleasure and purification. Selene’s mastery of her own Ice Queen Grimoire had been rising in parallel with Arthur’s Frost Sovereign; tonight the difference was noticeable in the way her body accepted the Eros current without resistance. The last stubborn remnants of poisoned cold gave way under the sustained contact.

When release came it was quiet and complete. Selene trembled against him, forehead pressed to his collarbone, breath shivering out of her in small clouds that had nothing to do with the room’s temperature. Arthur held her through it, continuing the slow circulation of mana until the final traces were gone.

Afterward they lay on the reinforced flooring without speaking. Selene’s fingers traced idle, absent patterns across his chest. The clean cold of her natural affinity now radiated without any undercurrent of pain.

"You’re as ready as I can make you," she said eventually. Her voice was low. "The rest will depend on what the dungeon decides to throw at you."

Arthur looked at the ceiling. "If Iris’s Grimoire ruptures inside—"

"Then you will have to decide how much of your own margin you’re willing to spend on someone else’s gamble." Selene lifted her head and met his eyes. "I am not telling you to abandon her. I am telling you that the dungeon will not give you unlimited chances to be kind."

She sat up and began gathering her clothes. Arthur did the same. When they were dressed again, Selene paused at the door with her back to him.

"Come back," she said simply.

Then she left.

Arthur returned to the Dawn dormitory under a sky that had cleared to cold stars. Most of the windows in the first-year halls were still lit. Students were forcing last hours of preparation or simply too tense to sleep. He climbed the stairs to his floor, opened his door, and stopped.

Iris Blackthorn sat on the floor with her back against the wall beside his door, Grimoire in her lap, head tilted back, eyes closed. She was asleep sitting up. The unstable flicker of her book had quieted for the moment, but the strain around her eyes remained even in unconsciousness.

Arthur looked at her for a long time.

Then he unlocked his door, crouched, and carefully lifted her Grimoire out of her slack fingers so it would not fall. Iris stirred at the contact but did not fully wake. He left the door open, returned to the hallway, and sat down against the opposite wall with the black book resting beside him.

He did not wake her.

Tomorrow the dungeon would open whether any of them were ready or not.

Tonight, at least, he could make sure one of them slept without her book hitting the floor.
