The Librarian Who Levels Through Lost Knowledge
Ardel Was Real
Dusk fell over the spires of the capital like a shroud of muted gold and violet, but forty-two meters beneath the marble corridors of the Royal Library, time moved according to the steady, eternal pulse of the First Hearth. In the subterranean sanctuary of Archive Level Zero, the soft amber light of the central hearth flame bathed the towering basalt shelves, casting long, solemn shadows across thousands of unredacted volumes that had rested in silence for eight centuries.
Lucian Vale stood before the central reading table, checking the contents of his heavy leather satchel one final time. Inside, wrapped in thick protective velvet, rested his black notebook—the Chronicles of the Sunless Era—its pages heavy with decoded history, reconstructed magic, and the unerasable truth of a erased civilization. Beside it lay the Warden's Bronze Seal, the steel-bound master folio of Dr. Aurelius Veyne, and enough ink vials and parchment rolls to record an entire kingdom.
At his hip hung the plain iron training sword he had practiced with in the sanctuary. It was no legendary artifact forged from star-metal, but under the guidance of The Way of the Silent Edge, the blade felt like a natural extension of his arm—a tool of precise, unhurried balance rather than brute force.
"Everything is packed," Elara Veyne said, stepping up to the reading table. She carried a sturdy traveling pack containing provisions, etheric lanterns, and her father's field journals. Her eyes were bright with a quiet, burning resolve. "The warding arrays on Archive Level Zero are fully active. If anyone tries to force their way past the triangular iron doors from Sektor Four, the Archive Shielding will reflect their scanning magic and show them nothing but solid bedrock."
"Good," Lucian said, his calm voice echoing gently against the ancient stone walls. "The Censors and the Royal Inquisition are still searching for ghost-infiltrators on the upper floors after last night's confrontation. They believe we are trapped inside the capital. They do not realize that the subterranean foundations they walk upon were designed to connect to the open world."
Lucian walked over to the western wall of the sanctuary, where the dark, arched opening of the ancient aqueduct system opened into the granite bedrock. The air flowing out of the tunnel was cool, crisp, and bore the faint, unmistakable scent of damp moss, mineral water, and open wilderness.
He activated his passive skill, Ley-Line Sight (Level 2). Instantly, his dark pupils shimmered with intricate geometric patterns of silver and blue. In his vision, the subterranean aqueduct transformed into a glowing arterial network of ley-line energy. Bright blue streams of raw, unrefined ether flowed along the stone floor and vaulted ceiling, tracing the exact route built by the ancient stone-masons of Ardel eight hundred years ago.
"The primary aqueduct runs westward beneath the city wall, passing sixty feet below the western gatehouse and the garrison barracks," Lucian explained, pointing into the darkness with his silver fountain pen. "It bypasses all imperial checkpoints, all anti-personnel warding barriers, and all magical detection grids deployed by the High Council of Mages. To the System above, we simply do not exist."
"Then let us go," Elara said, taking a deep breath and adjusting her pack. "It's time to see the world my father died trying to prove existed."
Lucian nodded. He stepped into the arched tunnel, his boots making no sound against the wet stone floor as Echo Step (Level 1) absorbed every vibration of his movement. Elara followed close behind, her footsteps muffled within the aura of acoustic suppression Lucian extended around them.
The journey through the subterranean aqueduct was a masterclass in pre-System engineering. For nearly two hours, they walked in near-perfect silence through vaulted conduits of fitted basalt and waterproofed ether-mortar. Unlike the cramped, foul-smelling sewers of modern Asterra, these ancient aqueducts were clean, spacious, and ventilated by hidden vertical shafts that drew fresh air from the surface hills above.
Every fifty paces, Lucian observed stone relief carvings embedded in the conduit walls—emblems depicting twin sheaves of wheat crossed beneath a stylized hearth flame, the ancestral heraldry of the Commonwealth of Ardel. Interspersed between the emblems were operational runes in Ancestral Old Asterian, regulating water flow and structural integrity without relying on System-granted spell matrices.

Lucian smiled faintly as the blue interface text faded from his vision. "The founders of Asterra claimed that before King Aster I built the capital, this land was a wilderness inhabited by scattered, illiterate tribes. Yet here, sixty feet beneath their feet, lies a water filtration and transport system that has operated continuously for eight centuries without requiring a single repair."
"They didn't just conquer Ardel," Elara murmured, her fingers brushing against a carved water-gauge along the conduit wall. "They built their entire civilization on top of Ardel's corpse, claimed its engineering as their own, and then executed anyone who remembered who actually built it."
"And that is why the lie cannot endure," Lucian replied softly. "A tower built on stolen foundations will always collapse when the truth is restored."
After covering nearly six miles underground, the aqueduct began to slope gently upward. The smooth basalt masonry gave way to natural cavern rock, and the rush of flowing water grew louder. Moments later, the subterranean tunnel opened into a wide, concealed cavern hidden inside a cliffside embankment overgrown with thick ivy and thorny briars.
Lucian stepped through the curtain of vines and emerged into the open night air.
A cool night breeze swept across the landscape, rustling the tall grass and carrying the sharp, clean scent of pine resin and mountain earth. High above, the moon shone brightly through a clear night sky, illuminating a vast, rolling expanse of grasslands, forested ridges, and jagged western peaks stretching into the distant horizon.
Behind them, three miles to the east, the towering white spires of the Royal Palace and the Royal Library of Asterra gleamed like pale bone against the dark sky, surrounded by the massive stone ramparts of the capital.
Lucian looked out over the vast western landscape. In official imperial atlases—the ones taught to every schoolchild and military cadet in the kingdom—this entire territory was labeled as the "Barren Marches" or the "Uninhabitable Wastelands," described as a desolate, mana-starved desert where nothing grew and no civilization had ever taken root.

Lucian closed his eyes and activated Cartographic Synthesis (Level 1) alongside Ley-Line Sight (Level 2).
Instantly, his mind expanded across the landscape. The false imperial maps in his memory shattered like brittle glass, replaced by the glowing, multi-layered spatial projection he had decrypted from Dr. Veyne's master folio. In his vision, glowing silver lines mapped the true contours of the land, revealing hidden river valleys, ancient road networks buried beneath layers of topsoil, and forgotten ley-line junctions pulsing beneath the grass.
"Look there," Lucian said, pointing toward a low ridge half a mile to the west.
Elara followed his gaze. In the moonlight, the ridge appeared to be nothing more than a natural mound of earth covered in wild scrub and ivy. But as they approached, Lucian knelt down and brushed away a thick layer of moss and tangled roots at the base of the mound.
Beneath the vegetation sat a massive, rectangular milestone carved from solid white granite. Though heavily weathered by centuries of rain and wind, the face of the stone clearly displayed a deeply engraved emblem: the twin sheaves of wheat and the hearth flame of Ardel. Beneath the heraldry, four lines of crisp Ancestral Old Asterian text remained perfectly legible.
Lucian placed his palm against the cold granite surface and read the inscription aloud:
"Welcome, traveler, to the Eastern Marches of the Commonwealth of Ardel. Here stands the Province of Veridia, where knowledge is shared freely beneath the open sky. Let all who enter seek truth with an open heart."
As Lucian spoke the words, the ancient stone hummed with a soft, resonant vibration. Faint lines of dormant silver ether flared to life within the engraved runes, reacting to the presence of a scholar who possessed the true language of its creators.

Elara gasped, falling to her knees beside the stone pillar. Her hands trembled as she traced the carved sheaves of wheat, tears brimming in her eyes.
"It's real..." she whispered, her voice choking with emotion. "It's really real. My father wasn't crazy. He didn't forge his research. He found this exact milestone twenty years ago!"
"He did," Lucian confirmed gently, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "And when he refused to retract his paper, the High Council stripped him of his title and locked his work in Vault Five because they knew that if the public saw this stone, the entire narrative of Asterra's divine right to rule would crumble in an instant."
Lucian raised his right hand over the milestone and channeled his active skill, Historical Projection (Level 2).
A shimmering wave of golden-silver ether radiated outward from his palm, enveloping the stone pillar and the surrounding ridge. The dark, desolate grassland around them dissolved into a translucent, three-dimensional phantom projection of the past—a living scene from eight hundred years ago.
In the projection, the desolate ridge was replaced by a bustling, paved stone highway lined with shade trees and glowing etheric lanterns. Carriages drawn by horses glided smoothly along the road, while farmers, scholars in simple woolen robes, and merchants carrying crates of grain walked side by side in peaceful conversation. In the distance, where the "Barren Marches" now lay empty, stood prosperous farming villages, stone windmills, and terraced vineyards irrigated by crystal-clear canals.
Near the milestone stood a small stone pavilion—a public reading station stocked with rolls of parchment and leather-bound books, where travelers sat resting and reading freely beneath the shade of an oak tree.
There were no military guards. No Inquisition overseers. No Censors inspecting reading passes. No System level-meters floating above anyone's head.
Just people living, working, and learning in freedom.
Elara watched the projection in breathless awe, her eyes reflecting the golden light of the past. "Look at them... there are no Class badges on their cloaks. No one is carrying a level-stone."
"Because in Ardel, a person's worth was not defined by a System rank assigned by a king," Lucian said, his voice ringing with deep, quiet passion. "They were farmers, craftsmen, scholars, and builders. Magic was a tool for life, not a weapon of state control."
The projection flickered as Lucian drew upon his second skill, Reality Transcription (Level 1). He opened his black notebook and placed it against the milestone. With a gentle stroke of his silver pen, he transcribed the exact coordinates, rune matrices, and visual memory of the milestone directly onto the velvet-bound parchment.
The milestone's inscription glowed brightly, syncing its hidden etheric signature to Lucian's notebook.

Lucian released his magic, and the phantom projection faded back into the quiet moonlight of the modern night. But the white granite milestone remained, standing tall and proud against the dark sky, its silver runes glowing softly in the dark.
Elara stood up, wiping her eyes, her posture regal and unyielding. "Where to now, Lucian?"
Lucian turned his gaze westward, looking toward the dark, jagged peaks of the Crags of Despair rising in the distance. Beyond those treacherous cliffs lay the deep, uncharted valleys of The Forest Without a Name—and at its heart, the buried ruins of Oakhaven-of-the-West.
"We follow the ancient highway," Lucian said, his dark eyes burning with absolute determination. "The imperial history books called this land a wasteland because they wanted the world to forget what they destroyed. But tonight, the Keeper has returned to read the land."
He adjusted his silver fountain pen in his breast pocket and looked back one last time at the distant, glittering spires of Asterra.
"The kingdom built its empire on a lie," Lucian whispered into the night wind. "And we are going to tear that lie down, page by page."
With Elara by his side, Lucian Vale turned his back on the false empire and stepped forward into the lands of Ardel, his silent footsteps leaving an unerasable mark upon the true history of the world.
