The Librarian Who Levels Through Lost Knowledge

A Library Older Than Civilization

  • Next Chapter

The morning light filtering through the sweeping quartz dome of the Great Library of Oakhaven-of-the-West was different from any sunrise Lucian Vale had ever witnessed in the capital. In Asterra, the morning sun had always felt distant and harsh, filtered through layers of spell-conduits and the heavy, metallic smog of imperial war-foundries. But here, forty miles inside the pristine canopy of the Forest Without a Name, the sunlight fell in soft, crystalline beams, bathing the five circular tiers of basalt and white granite shelves in a warm, amber glow.

Down on the main reading floor, the soft, rhythmic rustle of turning parchment pages and the quiet murmur of scholars echoed continuously. Over three hundred independent researchers, former library apprentices from Sektor Four, Vanguard knights who had laid down their swords, and young scholars from the Royal Academy moved through the aisles with reverence. No Censors walked among them. No System badges checked their clearance. Books were pulled from shelves, read, discussed, and copied freely under the silent, benevolent gaze of the ancient quartz pillars.

Yet on the secluded fifth-tier balcony, overlooking the bustling atrium below, Lucian Vale sat at a wide oak reading table, surrounded by three centuries of uncensored cartographic maps and a single, heavy volume bound in rusted iron rivets.

Beside him, Elara Veyne adjusted the flame of a small brass oil lamp, her dark eyes reflecting the flickering golden light as she leaned over the yellowed vellum pages. Opposite them sat Warden Julian—the man who had spent forty years serving as Senior Auditor Vane of the Inquisition before Lucian’s Truth Realm Domain had shattered his erased memory seals, restoring his true identity as an Archival Guardian of Ardel.

"The script on these opening pages isn't Old Asterian," Elara said softly, her fingers lightly hovering above the raised, geometric glyphs carved into the iron-bound cover. "I've spent eight years studying every dialect from the Reign of Rediction to the First Cataclysm, but these symbols... they lack the fluid, curved syntax of the Ardelian era. They are rigid, mathematical, almost carved into the vellum with absolute geometric precision."

Lucian Vale adjusted his silver fountain pen inside his breast pocket, his dark eyes glowing with a faint, sapphire luminescence as he activated [Omniscient Indexing (Level 1)] and [Living Archive]. The moment his consciousness brushed against the ancient iron-bound ledger, the thousands of geometric glyphs began to align in his mind, dissolving their ancient obscurity into readable, pristine clarity.

"It isn't Old Asterian, Elara," Lucian replied, his voice calm and reverent in the quiet sanctuary. "It is Ancestral Primordial—the root language from which Old Asterian, High Solar, and even the original System command syntax were derived. It was spoken on this continent long before King Aster I carved his first throne, long before the kingdom of Ardel laid its marble foundations."

Warden Julian leaned forward, his weathered, scarred hands resting heavily on the table. The former inquisitor looked at the book with a mixture of profound awe and deep, contemplative quiet. "When I served the High Council under the false name of Vane, the Inquisitorial archives always maintained that Ardel was the origin of all magic and rebellion—the first civilization that attempted to defy the divine order. But when we unsealed the lower vault beneath Node Seven yesterday, my restored memories began to whisper something else."

Julian looked up at Lucian, his dark eyes solemn. "The founders of Ardel did not invent the Great Library of Oakhaven out of nothing, did they, Lucian?"

"No," Lucian said softly, turning the heavy, iron-riveted page. "They didn't."

A soft, golden interface prompt hovered before Lucian's vision, visible only to the Supreme Keeper:

[LOST KNOWLEDGE DISCOVERED: THE PRIMORDIAL FOUNDATION OF ARDEL] [LANGUAGE RECONSTRUCTED: ANCESTRAL PRIMORDIAL (100% FLUENCY)] [KNOWLEDGE POINTS GAINED: +500 KP] [CURRENT KNOWLEDGE POINTS: 5,000 / 5,000 KP (MAXIMUM CAPACITY - CONTINENTAL HARMONY ACTIVE)]

[ARCHIVE DIRECTORY UPDATED: ARCHIVE OF THE FIRST LIBRARY] [DIRECTORY LEVEL: PRIMORDIAL ERA (PRE-CIVILIZATION)]

Lucian pointed his finger to the opening paragraph of the second chapter, written in golden, unerasable ink that had survived thousands of years beneath the earth.

"Listen to what Arch-Librarian Corvin's predecessors recorded during the founding of Oakhaven," Lucian said, reading the translated text aloud in natural, fluent English:

"'When our ancestors fled the Great Collapse of the First Era and carved this city into the river basin of Veridia, they believed they were constructing the first true house of knowledge upon the earth. But when our miners dug sixty cubits beneath the bedrock to lay the foundations for the Grand Hearth, we did not find pristine stone. We found an ancient archway of black adamantine, untouched by rust or decay, bearing an inscription in a tongue no living mortal spoke.'"

Elara gasped softly, her hand pressing against her chest. "They found a structure that was already there?"

"'We realized then,'" Lucian continued reading, his voice echoing with solemn gravity, "'that Oakhaven was not the mother of civilization, but merely a daughter standing in the doorway of something far grander. The archway led down into an endless abyss of stone shelves and crystalline vaults that stretched beyond the borders of our continent. It was the primal vault of humanity—The First Library.'"

The air on the fifth-tier balcony seemed to grow still, thick with the weight of thousands of years of hidden history. Down in the atrium below, the soft light of the quartz dome pulsed warmly, as if the ancient building itself was humming in agreement with the words being read.

"A library older than civilization itself..." Julian whispered, staring at the pages in disbelief. "A place where the knowledge of forgotten ages was stored before humans even learned to build cities or forge iron."

"And look at the next passage," Lucian said, shifting his hand to the lower corner of the page where an intricate geometric diagram was inscribed.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

The diagram depicted seven circular medallions arranged in a sweeping constellation around a central, diamond-shaped gate. Each medallion was inlaid with a distinct rune—a pen, a feather, an hourglass, an eye, an anvil, a flame, and a key.

"When the First Cataclysm swept across the continent eight hundred years ago," Lucian explained, his eyes scanning the ancient Ardelian annotations in the margins, "the Archmagi of Oakhaven realized that King Aster I and his Censors intended to seal all free magic inside artificial System anchors. To prevent the King from reaching the primal depths of the First Library and rewriting reality from its source, the Arch-Librarian activated the Primordial Lock."

Lucian's silver fountain pen traced the seven constellation points on the diagram.

"They sealed the adamantine gate of the First Library with seven master keys," Lucian continued. "Then, seven grand scholars scattered across the four corners of the continent, taking the keys with them to be buried in secret tombs, forgotten vaults, and subterranean sanctuaries where no Censor could ever find them."

A floating, golden quest notification materialized before Lucian:

[QUEST INITIATED: RECOVERY OF THE SEVEN ARCHIVE KEYS] [OBJECTIVE: LOCATE AND RETRIEVE THE SEVEN PRIMORDIAL KEYS TO UNLOCK THE GATES OF THE FIRST LIBRARY] [PROGRESS: 0 / 7 KEYS RECOVERED]

[KEY 1: THE KEY OF THE SILENT SCHOLAR (LOCATION: THE SCHOLAR'S TOMB - EASTERN WASTES)] [KEY 2: THE KEY OF THE ABYSSAL DEEP (LOCATION: THE SUNKEN ARCHIVE OF CORAL REACH)] [KEY 3: THE KEY OF THE MONOLITH (LOCATION: THE STONE TABLET VAULT OF THE PEAKS)] [KEY 4: THE KEY OF THE MEMORY CRYSTAL (LOCATION: THE CHRONO-CRYSTAL SANCTUARY)] [KEY 5: THE KEY OF THE LIVING DOMAIN (LOCATION: THE ANCIENT MENTAL ARCHIVE)] [KEY 6: THE KEY OF THE FIRST WARDEN (LOCATION: THE WARDEN'S MAUSOLEUM)] [KEY 7: THE KEY OF THE LIVING GUARDIAN (LOCATION: UNKNOWN - LIVING ENTITY)]

Elara leaned closer to the diagram, her eyes tracing the first constellation node pointing far to the arid, sun-baked mountains of the Eastern Wastes. "The Scholar's Tomb... I remember reading a redacted footnote in a geographical survey when I was working in the Royal Library's restricted section. The High Council declared the Eastern Wastes a dead zone five hundred years ago, claiming it was nothing but shifting sand and uninhabitable ruins."

"That is the same pattern they used for the Forest Without a Name," Julian noted sharply. "Whenever the High Council wanted to keep people away from an ancient archive or a warden tomb, they labeled the region a wasteland or filled the map with warning symbols of phantom monsters."

"Precisely," Lucian agreed, a confident, resolute smile touching his lips. He unclasped his black notebook and placed it alongside the iron-bound ledger. Using his skill [Cartographic Synthesis (Level 1)], Lucian raised his hand over the desk.

A brilliant, three-dimensional spatial projection erupted from the pages of his black book. The holographic map displayed the entire continent of Asterra, but instead of showing imperial sector boundaries and provincial borders, it glowed with the vibrant, golden ley-lines of the First Era.

At the center of the map stood the glowing circular icon of Oakhaven-of-the-West. And extending far to the east, across the jagged ridges of the Redstone Canyons, a bright violet beacon pulsed deep within a subterranean mountain valley—the exact coordinates of The Scholar's Tomb.

"The First Key," Lucian murmured, his dark eyes reflecting the brilliant violet light of the projection. "The Key of the Silent Scholar. It rests within the tomb of Arch-Scholar Aethelgard—the man who wrote the first comprehensive dictionary of Ancestral Primordial before the System existed."

Elara looked at Lucian, her face illuminated by the spatial map. "If Arch-Scholar Aethelgard buried the key with him, his tomb must be protected by ancient Ardelian preservation wards. It won't be an easy journey across the Eastern Wastes."

"We won't be going alone," Lucian replied warmly. "The spatial portal network beneath the Hearth Vault is fully operational now. We can establish a direct relay link between Oakhaven and the eastern borderlands. But more importantly..."

Lucian turned his gaze back down toward the bustling atrium below. Down on the main floor, Raymond—Lucian's former co-archivist from Sektor Four—was demonstrating the fluid, unscripted casting of basic atmospheric light spells to a group of eager young students. Beside them, two former Vanguard knights were studying ancient tactical manuals on physical biomechanics, taking notes in crisp, clear notebooks.

"Knowledge is no longer the burden of one person or one secret order," Lucian said softly, his voice filled with deep pride and conviction. "We have restored the truth to the people. The capital is free, the seven System anchors are neutralized, and the countdown to world destruction is broken. Now, our duty as librarians evolves."

Elara smiled, her dark eyes shining with affection and shared purpose. "From protecting the lost past... to exploring the infinite future."

"Yes," Lucian Vale agreed. He picked up his silver fountain pen, adjusted his collar, and capped the iron-bound ledger with a protective velvet cloth. "The kingdom spent eight hundred years trying to convince humanity that history was finished, that the System was the ultimate peak of existence, and that nothing lay beyond their stone walls."

He stood up from the oak table, securing his black notebook inside his satchel. Standing beside Elara and Warden Julian, the Supreme Keeper of the First Archive looked out toward the eastern horizon where the morning sun bathed the world in bright, unwritten gold.

"They thought they had read every book in the world," Lucian whispered, his voice steady and resolute. "They didn't realize we haven't even finished the preface."

Lucian Vale closed his satchel, adjusted his silver pen in his breast pocket, and led the way down the marble stairs to prepare for the grand expedition to the Scholar's Tomb, stepping forward into the vast, unfolding history of a liberated world.
