The Legendary Dungeon Master
Chapter 56: The Full Awakening
Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Full Awakening
The pulse sent another signal.
Deep within the elven dungeon, something reacted to the call of the Dungeon Authority. The blue crystals that lit the room blinked twice before losing their glow entirely.
Arin remained motionless as he stared at the empty space where the Dungeon Authority Remnant vanished. He could still feel the strange presence that lurked far below them. It was not coming towards them, nor was it showing hostility. It was simply there, as if it became aware of him
Ayan stepped closer.
"Arin."
"I know."
Arin looked down at his hand. His Dungeon Master’s Mark glowed furiously.
"This is coming from my Mark."
Ayan was at his side in an instant while Saira and the others watched with growing concern.
Black light spread from his Mark before another familiar System window appeared above his hand.
This time, it was different. The text on the window flickered before settling on a set of words.
[Dungeon Master’s Mark detected.]
[Incomplete Dungeon Master System detected.]
[External Dungeon Authority detected.]
[Residual authority successfully absorbed.]
Arin studied the text before another set of text appeared right after.
"Residual authority?"
Before he could contemplate on it further, another set of text appeared.
[Conditions fulfilled.]
[Beginning System Restoration.]
The chamber trembled as a deep rumbling reverberated from the depths of the dungeon. Arin fell on one knee as a sharp pain spiked at his palm.
"Arin!"
Saira was at his side in an instant but Ayan stopped her.
"Wait."
She shot him a worried look.
"He’s in pain."
"I know, but look at his Mark."
Saira turned her attention back to Arin’s glowing Mark. The black color had spread on his palm, creeping along the lines on his palm towards his wrist. Then, the System window changed.
[Dungeon Master Authority confirmed.]
[Dungeon Master System synchronization: 37%...]
Arin grit his teeth.
"What is happening?"
A voice responded to his question. It did not come from the System window; it came from his head.
Arin.
Arin looked up in surprise. He knew that voice.
"Arene?"
There was silence for a few moments before the voice responded. This time, the tone was clearer.
Yes. I am here.
Arin stood up, his eyes wide in astonishment.
"Arene, what is happening?"
The Dungeon Master System is awakening.
Arin turned his attention to the System window.
"What do you mean by awakening? You’ve been part of the System this whole time."
That is incorrect. I was integrated into an incomplete version of the Dungeon Master System.
Arin was stunned. His mind reeled as he tried to comprehend her words. He remembered the ghostly figure that appeared before he gained his Dungeon Master power.
"So all this time, I was using a partial version of the System?"
Correct. You were accessing only a fraction of its power.
The System window changed yet again.
[Synchronization: 51%...]
Blue light gathered in the room as Arin stared at the lights in confusion. He felt the energy coursing through the room. It was not mana. It was something else entirely. Something that felt different from any magic he had used before.
Ayan was the first to recognize the energy.
"Dungeon Master mana."
He looked around the chamber in awe.
"But the dungeon is giving it to him."
Arin could feel it for himself. For the first time, the dungeon was not an external entity for him. Arin could feel the structure of the dungeon, its tunnels, its monsters, and the mana within its veins. It was as if he could see the dungeon’s very lifeblood. It was overwhelming, but his dungeon sense had never been this incredible before.
Something else was different as well. Text began flooding his vision.
Dungeon Core
Dungeon Territory
Dungeon Construction
Monster Management
Dungeon Authority
Mana Distribution
System Functions
It was too much.
"Too much..."
Arene’s voice echoed in his mind.
Do not attempt to process everything at once.
"How am I supposed to stop it?"
You cannot stop the restoration. You can only control what you choose to understand.
Arin closed his eyes. He focused on stopping the torrent of information but instead focused on the dungeon. Slowly, the information arranged itself. It was like reading a book, but he now understood how all the words fit together.
The System stabilized.
[Synchronization: 82%...]
Arin opened his eyes. The pain in his hand had already subsided. The black mark on his hand had changed. The original mark was still there, but several faint blue lines had appeared around it.
Arene’s voice spoke again.
Arin. The restoration is approaching completion.
"What is going to happen?"
I will fully awaken.
Arin turned his gaze to the System window.
"And what does that mean?"
You will finally have access to the complete Dungeon Master System.
The room fell silent. One last set of text appeared on the System window.
[Dungeon Master System restoration: 100%.]
[System fully awakened.]
[Arene synchronization complete.]
[Dungeon Master Authority stabilized.]
[Welcome, Dungeon Master Arin Rahman.]
The text cleared as Arin stared at the System window. Once again, the room was silent. He was expecting some sort of explosion or massive power surge, but nothing happened.
Arene spoke.
Hello, Arin.
A small smile graced Arin’s lips.
"You sound different."
I am different.
"How?"
Before, I could only guide you through the functions available to me. Now I can access the complete Dungeon Master System.
A new System window appeared before him.
[Dungeon Master System]
[Authority Level: 1]
[Dungeon Core: 1]
[Dungeon Territory: Limited]
[Dungeon Perception: Unlocked]
[Dungeon Sense: Unlocked]
[Dungeon Construction: Restricted]
[Monster Management: Restricted]
[Dungeon Core Management: Restricted]
[Dungeon Teleportation: Locked]
[Dungeon Creation: Locked]
Arin looked at the window in confusion.
"That’s it?"
Arene’s voice sounded calm.
Your System is complete. Your authority is not.
Arin blinked in surprise.
"So the System was incomplete before, but my authority is still limited?"
Correct.
"That actually makes sense."
Ayan was the first to approach him.
"What did you learn?"
Arin turned to face him.
"The System is fully awake."
Ayan narrowed his eyes.
"And Arene?"
Before Arin could respond, Arene spoke.
I am here.
Ayan stopped dead in his tracks. He could hear Arene’s voice again, but this time it was different. There was something else there. A presence behind it.
"You..."
Arene continued.
Ayan.
The dragon looked at Arin.
"You remember me?"
I remember the previous Dungeon Master. I remember his dungeon, and I remember you.
Ayan’s expression softened. For the first time, he had nothing to say. Saira approached him.
"Arene?"
Saira.
Her eyes widened in surprise. Arin watched as Saira stared at the name on the System window.
"You remember me too?"
Yes.
A small smile appeared on Saira’s face. Arin looked at the two of them for a moment before turning his attention back to Arene. For the first time since he awakened his Mark, Arene no longer sounded like a broken System. She sounded whole.
Arin. There is something you need to understand.
Arin frowned.
"What?"
The Dungeon Master System was not created to make its user powerful. It was created to help a Dungeon Master understand dungeons.
Arin arched an eyebrow.
"Understand them?"
A Dungeon Master who understands a dungeon can influence it. A Dungeon Master who does not understand it cannot safely control it.
Arin thought back to the ancient text they found earlier.
Authority is not power. Authority is understanding.
"So that’s what it meant."
Yes.
Arin looked towards the sealed passage.
"Then the more I understand, the more authority I gain."
Correct.
"That explains why the System keeps restricting things."
The restrictions are protecting you from using authority you do not yet understand.
Arin sighed.
"Of course."
Adnan crossed his arms.
"So what does this actually change?"
Arin looked at him.
"I don’t know yet, but I can sense more of this dungeon than I could before."
He closed his eyes.
His Dungeon Sense spread out from his body to take in the underground room. It was similar to the last time he used it, but something was different. Instead of feeling like a disconnected series of rooms and tunnels, he could see the dungeon for what it was. He could see its structure, its mana, its damaged parts, its sealed parts, even its weak spots. But most of all, he could sense the strange authority within it.
Arin’s expression darkened.
"Arene."
Yes?
"Can you identify the authority I sensed earlier?"
A pause.
I can detect it.
"Whose is it?"
Unknown.
Arin frowned.
"You’re fully awakened now. You still can’t identify it?"
The authority is deliberately concealed.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Can you tell me anything else?"
Yes. I can tell you something I could not determine before.
"What?"
The authority below this dungeon is not a remnant.
Ayan immediately looked at Arin.
Adnan’s expression darkened.
"What is it, then?"
Arene replied.
A living Dungeon Authority.
The chamber was silent as Arin stared into the darkness.
"Living?"
Yes. Someone with Dungeon Master Authority is still connected to this dungeon.
Arin’s mind went back to the previous Dungeon Master. His body tensed.
"But the previous Dungeon Master is dead."
I know.
"Then who is it?"
Arene did not answer. For the first time since she awakened fully, there was hesitation in her voice.
I do not know.
Arin’s expression tightened.
"Can you locate them?"
No.
"Can you communicate with them?"
No.
Arin hesitated before asking the final question.
"Can they sense us?"
There was another pause before Arene answered.
Yes.
Arin turned his gaze towards the darkness. Someone else had sensed him awakening. And now, his journey through the elven dungeon would be far more dangerous than he ever anticipated.
Not because some dungeon monster was waiting for him. But because someone else was there as well, and they knew he was coming.
