The Last Debug: I Rewrote My Death

Chapter 76: The Guardian Came Through

  • Next Chapter

Kael woke before the sound reached him.

His eyes opened in complete darkness.

For a few seconds, he didn’t move. He listened to the abandoned building breathing around him—the slow creak of damaged wood, the distant drip of water, the faint whistle of wind passing through broken windows.

Then he heard it.

**Clang.**

A heavy metallic sound from somewhere outside.

Kael’s hand closed around the knife beside his leg.

**Clang.**

The second impact was closer.

Dust shook loose from the ceiling.

Kael rose without making a sound. His body was still weak, but the burning exhaustion from the previous night had faded. The system had restored a portion of his energy.

```text
[Energy Reserve: 41%]
[Physical condition: Stable]
[Warning: Hostile presence detected]
```

Kael stared at the last message.

A third impact struck the street.

This time, the entire building trembled.

Kael turned toward the entrance.

The door was still closed.

The sound had come from behind him.

He looked at the wall.

A thin line of orange light appeared across the cracked stone.

Kael took one step back.

The line widened.

Stone split apart without making a sound, revealing a circular surface beneath the wall. It looked like one of the countless circles from the chamber, except its edges were black instead of white.

Something stood on the other side.

Kael recognized the silhouette immediately.

The stone guardian.

Its head tilted slightly as if it had been waiting for him to wake up.

Kael’s grip tightened around the knife.

"You followed me."

The guardian stepped forward.

Its stone foot crossed through the circle and landed inside the abandoned building.

The floor cracked beneath its weight.

A notification appeared.

```text
[Warning: Spatial barrier failure]
[Foreign entity entering local reality]
[Threat classification: Unknown]
```

Kael glanced at the message.

"Unknown? You have to be joking."

The guardian’s empty face turned toward him.

Then its second foot crossed through the circle.

The black ring behind it began to collapse.

Kael moved first.

He kicked a broken table toward the guardian and ran in the opposite direction. The table struck the creature’s knee and shattered instantly.

The guardian didn’t slow down.

Kael reached the back wall and jumped through the doorway leading into the next room. He landed hard, rolled across the floor, and came up beside a collapsed staircase.

The guardian raised one arm.

Kael threw himself sideways.

The stone fist destroyed the wall behind him.

Bricks and dust exploded through the room.

Kael hit the floor and felt something tear beneath his ribs.

He forced himself upright.

The guardian walked through the opening it had created.

It was larger than before.

The cramped building could barely contain it. Its shoulders scraped the ceiling, and pieces of stone fell from its body with every movement. Thin orange lines pulsed beneath its armor like veins filled with fire.

Kael focused on the glowing lines.

**Resonance activated.**

The world changed.

The guardian was no longer a solid figure. It became a structure of overlapping energy patterns, each layer turning at a different speed.

At the center of its chest, Kael saw a small black mark.

Not a core.

A seal.

Something had been locked inside the guardian.

Something that was trying to get out.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"You’re not chasing me."

The guardian’s arm moved.

Kael jumped over a collapsing beam as the stone fist tore through the room.

"You’re carrying something."

He landed on the remains of a staircase and pushed Resonance deeper.

Pain stabbed through his skull.

The guardian’s energy resisted him. It was like trying to read a language that had been carved into a moving blade.

A single word reached him.

Not spoken.

Remembered.

**OPEN.**

Kael felt the word echo inside his chest.

The ringing started again.

The same vibration that had followed him out of the chamber.

The seal in the guardian’s chest answered.

The creature stopped.

For the first time, it looked uncertain.

Kael understood.

The guardian had not followed him because it wanted to kill him.

It had followed him because Kael’s new energy was the only thing capable of opening the seal.

"No," Kael said.

The guardian raised both arms.

"Whatever is inside you, keep it locked."

The ceiling came down.

Kael ran.

He moved through the hallway as stone and wood collapsed behind him. The building shook violently, and every step sent pain through his ribs.

A section of the floor broke apart ahead.

Kael stopped at the edge of the hole.

Below him was the basement.

There was no other path.

Behind him, the guardian’s footsteps approached.

**Clang.**

**Clang.**

**Clang.**

Kael looked down.

The basement was completely dark.

He jumped.

The fall lasted longer than it should have.

His feet struck something hard. He rolled across cold stone and slammed into a wall. For several seconds, he could hear nothing but the ringing in his ears.

Then the guardian landed above him.

The floor broke.

A huge stone hand reached through the opening.

Kael crawled backward until his shoulders hit another wall.

There was nowhere left to run.

The guardian pulled itself into the basement.

Its head nearly touched the ceiling.

Kael looked around quickly.

The basement wasn’t part of the building.

The walls were made of smooth black stone, covered in lines that formed the same circular symbols he had seen in the chamber.

One of the symbols was active.

It was directly behind him.

The surface showed a scene.

A dark room.

Two figures standing in front of a stone door.

One wore a mask.

The other had his back turned.

But Kael recognized the posture.

The second figure was him.

Not the Kael standing in the basement.

An older version.

A version carrying a long black blade.

The masked man placed one hand against the stone door.

"If you open it now, all three worlds will begin collapsing."

The older Kael answered without turning around.

"They are already collapsing."

The vision flickered.

The masked man stepped closer.

"You still have a choice."

The older Kael finally looked over his shoulder.

His face was hidden in shadow, but his voice was unmistakable.

"That’s what you told me last time."

The image vanished.

Kael stared at the dead symbol.

The guardian was almost on top of him.

A notification appeared.

```text
[Hidden structure identified]
[Designation: Locking chamber]
[Primary function: Containment]
[Current seal integrity: 7%]
```

Kael looked at the guardian’s chest.

The black seal inside it pulsed.

Seven percent.

The thing inside was almost free.

The guardian raised its fist.

Kael reached toward the active symbol behind him.

He didn’t know what it would do.

He didn’t have time to care.

His palm touched the stone.

The entire basement lit up.

A shockwave exploded from the symbol and struck the guardian in the chest.

The creature flew backward and smashed through the far wall.

Kael was thrown in the opposite direction. He hit the ground, rolled several times, and stopped near a deep crack in the floor.

For a moment, there was no movement.

Then the guardian stood.

The seal in its chest had changed.

A thin crack ran through the black mark.

Something dark leaked from it.

The darkness touched the floor and began spreading like liquid ink.

Kael felt the temperature drop.

A voice spoke from inside the guardian.

Not the masked man’s voice.

Not Elias’s.

A voice that sounded like Kael’s own thoughts after years without sleep.

"You opened the first lock."

Kael forced himself to stand.

"I didn’t open anything."

"You always say that."

The guardian’s stone face split down the center.

Behind it was not a skull.

There was only a vast black space filled with distant points of light.

Like stars seen from the bottom of an ocean.

Kael’s wrist burned.

Three system windows appeared at once.

```text
[Connection detected]
[Instance 01: KAEL — ACTIVE]
[Instance 02: DARIAN — ACTIVE]
[Instance 03: ETHAN — ACTIVE]
```

A fourth line appeared beneath them.

```text
[Original instance: LOCATION UNKNOWN]
```

Kael’s breath caught.

The creature inside the guardian laughed.

The sound came from every wall in the basement.

"There are three of you now."

The black liquid reached Kael’s boots.

"But only one of you was born first."

A sharp pulse ran through the floor.

Far away, something answered.

Kael saw flashes of places he had never visited.

A young man standing beneath a red sky, surrounded by motionless bodies.

Another man running through a city where every shadow had teeth.

Both of them looked up at the exact same moment.

Both received the same message.

```text
[UNAUTHORIZED LINK ESTABLISHED]
[Source: KAEL]
```

Kael didn’t send the connection.

Something had used him as a bridge.

The guardian stepped forward.

The black seal in its chest opened another fraction.

Kael raised his knife, even though he knew it would be useless against the creature’s stone body.

"Tell me where the original is."

The darkness inside the guardian grew still.

Then the masked man’s voice replaced it.

"You are asking the wrong question again."

Kael’s eyes hardened.

"I am running out of patience."

"No. You’re running out of versions."

The guardian lifted one hand.

The black liquid rose from the floor and formed a blade around its arm.

"Every time you die, something survives. Every time you survive, something dies in your place."

Kael felt cold spread through his chest.

The memory of the shadow in the window returned.

The impossible recognition.

The fear.

The other Kael at the desk.

The older Kael beside the sealed door.

How many times had this already happened?

The guardian swung.

Kael activated Resonance with everything he had.

The basement filled with threads of light.

He grabbed the guardian’s energy pattern and pulled.

The effect was immediate.

The creature staggered.

The seal in its chest opened wide enough for a single eye to appear inside the darkness.

It looked directly at Kael.

Not through him.

At him.

Recognition passed between them.

The eye belonged to something that remembered every version of him.

Kael screamed and pulled harder.

His energy reserve collapsed.

```text
[Energy Reserve: 18%]
[Warning: Core strain detected]
[Resonance stability: Critical]
```

The threads around the guardian began to snap.

Kael saw one final memory.

A small room.

A young Kael sitting alone at a desk.

A message glowing on an old monitor.

```text
[You were selected because you were the only one who died without being noticed.]
```

The memory ended.

Kael understood one thing.

He had not been chosen because he was special.

He had been chosen because nobody would come looking for him.

The guardian’s blade was inches from his face.

Kael released Resonance.

Instead of pulling the guardian’s energy apart, he pushed his own into the cracked seal.

The creature froze.

The darkness inside it surged toward him.

For one terrifying second, Kael felt something enter his chest.

Then the seal closed.

The guardian collapsed.

Its entire body broke into enormous stone pieces that crashed across the basement floor.

Silence returned.

Kael fell to one knee, gasping.

The system displayed a final message.

```text
[Containment restored temporarily]
[Guardian status: Dormant]
[New skill acquired: LOCKBREAKER]
[Description: Identify and interfere with sealed structures.]
```

Kael stared at the broken guardian.

A small black shard remained where its chest had been.

The shard pulsed once.

Then it spoke in his own voice.

"Find Darian before Ethan does."

Kael stood slowly.

"Why?"

The shard began to crack.

"Because Ethan already remembers killing you."

The black stone shattered.

At the same instant, the basement wall opened into a narrow passage filled with pale light.

Kael looked into the passage.

At the far end, three symbols were carved into the floor.

One carried his energy.

The second burned red.

The third was completely dark.

A final notification appeared.

```text
[Route unlocked]
[Destination: Instance 02 — Darian]
[Estimated survival probability: 23%]
```

Kael wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.

Behind him, the abandoned building began to collapse.

Ahead of him waited another world, another system, and a man who might already remember his death.

Kael stepped into the pale light.

This time, he didn’t wait for the system to give him permission.

He crossed the threshold with his knife in hand.

And somewhere in the darkness beyond the passage, Ethan opened his eyes and whispered:

"He finally found the door."
