The Last Debug: I Rewrote My Death
Chapter 73: Ember
The hall was quieter than it had any right to be.
Kyle sat on the floor, his back pressed against the rim of a dead circle, his body still trembling from the cold of the energy he had spent to protect Dana from a distance. He felt that if he tried to stand now, his legs would not carry him. They had already given him everything they had, and then a little more. The trembling was not fear, not exactly. It was the body’s way of complaining after being pushed past its limit. It was the small, humiliating language of exhaustion.
He looked at his wrist.

"Thank you, System," he said in a tired voice. "Wonderful idea."
He closed his eyes for only a second. Just one second. He tried to gather himself, to pull the scattered pieces of his thoughts back into some kind of order. But in that exact moment, he heard a sound.
Not footsteps. Something else. A faint crawling, like a heavy body moving across stone. It was slow, deliberate, and somehow worse than running. Running meant urgency. This meant patience. This meant something knew it had time.
He opened his eyes quickly.
Out of the darkness of the hall, many circles away, a shape had begun moving toward him. It was not the stone guardian he had seen before. It was different. Taller. Its body was like a dense black cloud that barely held the shape of a human being. It had no face, no clear limbs, but it moved as if it remembered what arms and legs were supposed to be. The air around it seemed darker, thicker, as if light itself was afraid to get too close.
Kyle tried to stand. His legs failed him, and he fell back onto one knee.
"Not now," he whispered to himself. "Not exactly now."
The shape approached. Slow. But certain. It moved as though it already knew Kyle could not run.
He reached for the nearest circle. His fingers touched the cold stone edge, and he tried to push whatever energy he had left into it, to open it, to escape anywhere. Anywhere was better than here.

"Okay," he said, his voice shaking a little. "Okay. Second plan."
He looked around, searching for anything he could use. A weapon. An exit. A miracle. The hall offered him nothing but circles and silence. The circles watched him like dead eyes. The silence pressed against his ears.
The shape came closer. Kyle felt pressure in the air around him, heavy and dense, like the atmosphere before a storm. It was the kind of pressure that made breathing feel like work.
He thought of Mira. He thought of Dana. He thought of Nadia. He thought of Tommy. He thought of the night everything had begun, the night that had split his life into before and after. He had walked away from them to protect them. Even now, alone in this strange place, he was still trying to protect someone. The thought should have felt noble. Instead, it felt desperate.
He thought that if he died here, no one would even know.
The thought did not frighten him the way he expected. Instead, it made something inside him harden. It was not courage. Not yet. It was refusal. It was the stubborn, animal part of him that did not want to disappear without explanation. It was the part of him that had made a promise and did not intend to break it in a place like this.
"No," he said, louder this time. "I’m not finished yet."
He stood. His legs trembled, but they held him. He faced the shape directly.
The shape attacked.
Kyle moved by instinct, not by plan. He barely dodged the first strike. He felt something cold pass close to his face, so cold it burned. The second strike came faster. This time he could not avoid it completely. The black fingers touched his shoulder, and he felt the cold sink under his skin. It was not just cold. It was hunger. It was pulling something out of him. Energy. Awareness. He was not sure what exactly. The shape was drinking him.
He fell to his knees. The shape stood above him, slow, but certain it would finish him this time.

"I know," Kyle said between his teeth. "I don’t need you to remind me."
The shape extended its black hand toward him.
In that last moment, Kyle did not think about death. He thought about everything that had brought him here. The night it all started. Tommy. The decision he had made while erasing the memories of the three. The promise he had made.
I won’t let you.
The thought was not aimed at the shape. It was aimed at himself.
Something in his chest exploded.
It was not like anything he had felt before. Not anger. Not fear. Something deeper. It was like a door that had been locked for a long time and suddenly burst open with force. It was like heat remembering how to exist after a long winter. It was like being alive in a way he had not been alive before.
Everything around him stopped for a moment.
The sound vanished. The black shape itself seemed to freeze in place.
Kyle looked at his wrist.
The red line, the one that had always been the color of dark blood, began to change. It shifted to a light orange, the color of a live ember. The color spread from his wrist to the rest of his arm, then to his chest. It was heat, not pain. Heat like someone returning to life after being cold for too long.
He opened his eyes. The world around him became clearer. Slower. As if time itself was giving him a chance to think.
"I’m not done," he said. His voice was different. Deeper. Steadier.
The orange light exploded from his body. One wave. It broke the frozen moment and pushed the black shape back several steps.

Kyle looked at his hands. They were glowing now with a faint orange light. He felt new strength running through his muscles. It was not enormous power. Not yet. But it was real. Tangible. It was his.
The black shape attacked again, furious at having lost its moment.
This time, Kyle moved at a completely different speed.
He dodged the strike more easily. He answered with a blow from his shoulder. It was simple, but strong enough to make the shape stagger. The shape had expected a dying man. Instead, it found something burning.
"Which of us has changed more now?" Kyle said, rushing toward the shape before it could regain its balance.
He struck once. Twice. Each blow was stronger than anything he had been capable of before. He watched the black shape begin to lose its density. It began to break apart from the edges, its body fraying like smoke in the wind.
The shape tried to flee. It tried to retreat into the darkness it had come from.
Kyle chased it two steps, then stopped. He let it go.
"I don’t need to chase you," he said, breathing hard, but not from exhaustion this time. Just effort. "But don’t come again."
The shape disappeared into the darkness. The pressure in the air disappeared with it.
Kyle stood alone in the hall. He looked at his hands, at the faint orange light still remaining on his skin.

He opened the new message, curiosity stronger than tiredness.
```
[Skill: Resonance]
[Description: The ability to sense nearby energy sources without direct touch]
```
He thought about the practical use of this skill, and a small, tired smile appeared on his face.
"Useful," he said to himself.
He sat on the floor again. This time it was not because of weakness. It was to rest. To let his body absorb the change that had happened. His muscles still ached. His shoulder still carried the cold memory of the shape’s touch. But something inside him had settled. The fear was still there, but it no longer had the final word.
He thought of Silas. He thought of what Silas had said about the long game. He knew he was still far from Silas’s level. Very far. But the distance felt a little shorter now. Not because he had become powerful, but because he had become something else. Something that could grow.
He thought about the process that had just happened. The reason he had reached it was not a desire for power for its own sake. It was his refusal to die while he still owed a debt to people who did not even know he existed. He had chosen to protect them. He had chosen to carry the weight alone. And that choice had become fire.
He looked around the vast hall, at the dozens of doors still flickering.
"Okay," he said, standing up. This time he was steadier than at any moment since he had arrived. "Where’s the door that will take me back to the station?"
He walked among the circles, looking for a way out. His body felt lighter. His mind felt clearer. The orange glow on his skin had faded, but he could still feel it somewhere beneath the surface, like coals under ash.
At a circle near the entrance he had come from, he stopped.
The image inside was not a street or a city. It was a face.
The face of the masked man he had met before. The man was looking directly at him, as if he had known Kyle would find him here at this exact moment.
"Congratulations on the upgrade," the image said. Its voice was clear even though it was only a reflection. "I was sure you would succeed."
"You were watching me?"
"I was making sure the hall guardian didn’t kill you before you made your choice."
Kyle froze. "So this was another test."
"Everything is a test, Kyle." A smile flickered behind the image, barely perceptible. "The only important question is: will you keep passing them?"
The image disappeared before Kyle could reply.
He stood in front of the empty circle. The orange light on his skin faded little by little. He thought that every step he took in this place brought him closer to an answer he was not sure he wanted. But he was still moving. And for now, that was enough.
