The Last Debug: I Rewrote My Death

Chapter 61: What They Won’t Remember

  • Next Chapter

Kael woke up long before dawn, and he had already made his decision without announcing it clearly even to himself.

He sat looking at them, one by one, in the small room above the abandoned shop. Dana asleep on her side, her arm wrapped around something he could no longer remember the shape of. Nadia, her notebook still open beside her even in sleep. And Mira, closest to him, her face calm with a calm he no longer fully trusted, because he knew now how fragile it was.

He raised his wrist slowly. The message was there, waiting, as if it had never gone away.

```
[PERMISSION STILL AVAILABLE]
[DO YOU WISH TO PROCEED?]
```

This time, he didn’t whisper "not now."

He looked at his hand for a long second, then closed his eyes.

"Yes," he said, in a voice barely audible even to himself.

He felt something shift inside him, not exactly pain, but heavy, like part of him already knew this would cost him something he’d never get back, even if he got everything else back someday.

He started with Dana.

He sat beside her, and reached out, carefully, and placed his fingertips on her forehead. She didn’t wake. He felt something like a thin thread stretching from his palm into something deeper than her, something he couldn’t see but could feel with terrifying clarity.

```
[IDENTIFYING TARGET RECORDS]
[PERIOD: FROM FIRST MEETING TO PRESENT]
[PROPOSED REPLACEMENT: CONSISTENT ALTERNATE MEMORY]
```

He didn’t read the details. He didn’t want to know exactly what would replace the memories she’d been carrying.

He thought, for a moment, of the first time he saw her, with her wrench and her dry laugh. He thought of every stupid joke she’d made to ease a tension nobody would admit to. He thought of how she’d defended him without hesitation, over and over, without ever asking why he deserved it.

"Thank you," he whispered, even though she would never hear it. "For everything."

He felt something complete itself. When he lifted his hand, her face was still calm, but something in the air around her had changed, in a way he couldn’t quite name.

He moved to Nadia next.

She was hard in a different way. He thought of every question she’d asked, her insistence on recording everything as if recording itself was her way of resisting. He thought of the notebook beside her, now full of pages that would lose their meaning the moment she opened her eyes.

He placed his hand on her forehead.

```
[IDENTIFYING TARGET RECORDS]
```

He thought she’d still be a journalist. She’d still ask questions. She’d still search for the truth in almost everything. That part of her wouldn’t be erased, because it hadn’t been part of this story to begin with. It had been who she was before she knew him, and it would remain who she was after she forgot him.

That thought, for some reason, made it a little easier.

Mira was left.

He sat beside her longer than he had with the other two, unable to reach out right away.

He looked at her face, and tried to memorize it, every detail of it, the way she used to look at him when she thought he wasn’t noticing, the way she’d stand beside anyone in pain without touching them, as if her presence alone had always been enough.

He thought of the shaft, of her hand over his on the Engine’s core, of her voice saying "I see you, Kael" in the middle of all that chaos.

He thought that if he had to forget one face in his life, he would wish it weren’t this one.

But he reached out anyway.

```
[IDENTIFYING TARGET RECORDS]
[WARNING: THIS RECORD IS TIED TO DEEP EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT]
[ARE YOU SURE?]
```

His hand stopped in the air.

He thought he could still turn back. He could put everything back the way it was, stay, find another way, any other way.

But he thought of Tommy, of that last look, of the quiet acceptance he’d seen in his eyes right before he disappeared.

He wouldn’t let this face ever look at him that way.

"I’m sure," he said.

He placed his hand on her forehead.

This was the only one, of the three, where he felt real resistance, like some part of her, even asleep, refused to forget him. It took longer, and when it finally completed, Kael felt something in his chest break silently, completely, no sound, no tears, just a quiet emptiness settling into a space that had been full moments ago.

He stood, and looked at the three of them, asleep, calm, not knowing anything about what they’d just lost.

He wrote a short note on a piece of paper he found, and left it beside Nadia’s notebook, a simple explanation enough to account for the injuries and the exhaustion without mentioning his name: a nearby car accident, a stranger helped them, he left before they woke up.

He looked at them one last time at the door.

"I’ll come back someday," he said, in a voice no one would hear. "When being near you isn’t a danger to you anymore. I promise."

He stepped out into the gray street, and the city around him suddenly felt bigger, colder, lonelier than he’d ever felt it before.

He walked, with no clear direction at first, then slowly began turning toward the old station, toward the door the vendor had described, toward whatever path would take him far from everything he’d known these past few days.

He looked at his wrist. The last message was still there.

```
[SUCCESS]
[LEVEL UP: 4]
```

Level four. His first real breakthrough since the night all of this started, and it had come at exactly this price.

He didn’t feel joy. He didn’t feel anything he could easily name.

He kept walking, alone, under a sky that never changed, toward a city that hadn’t decided yet what it would make of him.
