THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 123 — The Hunter Becomes the Hunted

  • Next Chapter

Kael remained beneath the tree.

The forest was quiet.

Too quiet.

He had spent hours reconstructing every detail of his encounter with the ancient entity.

The partial manifestation.

The spatial resistance.

The Soul pressure.

The way it had learned his traps.

The way it had withdrawn the moment the Shadow Seal became dangerous.

It had been a test.

For both of them.

Kael looked at the Shadow Seal.

[Compression Compatibility: 43%]

He frowned.

“Not enough.”

The vessel rested beside him.

Empty.

Waiting.

Kael looked at the Evolution interface.

[Evolution Progress: 4.1%]

[Fifth Path Compatibility: 12%]

He slowly clenched his fist.

He had been thinking about the problem incorrectly.

He kept asking:

How do I force the entity into the vessel?

That wasn't the real problem.

The real problem was:

How do I make the entity believe entering the vessel is its idea?

Kael smiled.

“I need bait.”

The Second Door

Kael reopened the information interface connected to the old pocket-world system.

Most functions were gone.

But the Four-Principle stabilization network remained.

He searched through it.

Shadow.

Nature.

Death.

Choice.

Then—

another hidden category appeared.

[Residual Pocket-World Connection.]

Kael frowned.

“Residual?”

The System explained:

[The original portal was destroyed.]

[However, the Four-Principle system established an alternate connection.]

Kael's eyes widened.

“So I can still communicate.”

[Limited communication possible.]

“Can I bring something through?”

A pause.

[Physical transfer: Restricted.]

[Energy transfer: Possible.]

Kael smiled.

Energy transfer.

That was enough.

He immediately activated the connection.

The air before him distorted.

A faint crimson glow appeared.

Then—

a familiar voice echoed.

“Kael.”

The Shadow Lion.

Kael exhaled.

“Good.”

Another presence entered.

The Verdant Serpent.

Then the Bone Sovereign.

Their voices overlapped.

“What happened?”

Kael looked toward them.

“The entity is awakening.”

Silence.

The Shadow Lion answered:

“We know.”

“How?”

“The prison reacts whenever it changes.”

Kael nodded.

“I have already made contact.”

The Bone Sovereign's voice became serious.

“Then you understand what it can do.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Kael looked at the Shadow Seal.

“I can seal it.”

The Verdant Serpent was silent for several seconds.

“Can you?”

Kael smiled.

“Not yet.”

A New Problem

Kael explained everything.

The failed manifestation.

The 17% peak.

The spatial resistance.

The Shadow Seal's 43% compatibility.

The entity's ability to learn.

The three Beasts listened.

When Kael finished—

the Bone Sovereign spoke.

“You cannot defeat it through force.”

“I know.”

“You cannot outthink it indefinitely.”

“I know.”

“It will learn every repeated tactic.”

“I know.”

The Shadow Lion spoke next.

“Then stop giving it repeated tactics.”

Kael looked at the connection.

“What do you mean?”

The Lion answered:

“Your greatest advantage is the Fifth Path.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“Change.”

“Yes.”

“You want me to create a trap that changes?”

“Not the trap.”

The Lion's crimson energy intensified.

“The rules.”

Kael became silent.

The Verdant Serpent continued.

“The entity has studied your fighting style.”

The Bone Sovereign added:

“It has studied your weapons.”

“It knows the Shadow Seal.”

“It knows your spatial anchors.”

“It knows your usual retreat patterns.”

Kael nodded.

“Then I give it something it cannot predict.”

The Shadow Lion answered:

“Your choice.”

Kael smiled.

The Adaptive Trap

Kael began constructing.

He didn't create one trap.

He created hundreds.

Tiny metal anchors.

Mithril fragments.

Spatial markers.

Mana-disruption crystals.

Soul-sensitive fragments.

Fifth Path nodes.

Each one looked ordinary.

Individually—

they were weak.

Together—

they formed a massive network around the forest.

Kael spent hours placing them.

He deliberately avoided symmetry.

No pattern.

No obvious formation.

No repeating distances.

Every anchor was slightly different.

Some carried Metal Control.

Some carried Spatial Anchor.

Some were inactive.

Some were decoys.

Some were connected to the Shadow Seal.

And others were connected to nothing.

The System analyzed the structure.

[Adaptive Battlefield Network detected.]

[Pattern: Non-deterministic.]

[Predictive analysis: Low.]

Kael smiled.

“That's better.”

He activated the Fifth Path.

The network changed.

One anchor moved.

Another shut down.

Three more activated.

The battlefield had become dynamic.

It was no longer a fixed trap.

It was a system capable of changing its own arrangement.

The Entity could learn from one attempt—

but the battlefield would already be different the next time.

Kael looked at it.

“Let's see you predict this.”

The Entity Returns

The sun had set.

Night covered the forest.

Kael sat beside the vessel.

He deliberately lowered his defenses.

Administrator Authority:

reduced.

Soul Sight:

inactive.

Fifth Path:

almost completely hidden.

Even his aura became weaker.

He looked vulnerable.

The Entity noticed.

The System flashed.

[Unknown observation detected.]

Kael smiled.

“You're watching.”

No response.

He waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Twenty.

Nothing.

Kael closed his eyes.

Then—

a voice appeared.

“You are baiting me.”

Kael opened his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You have become predictable.”

Kael smiled.

“Have I?”

A black crack appeared several meters away.

The Entity emerged.

Its manifestation was stronger than before.

Its entire upper body had crossed.

[Ancient Entity Awakening: 17% → 19%]

Kael's eyes sharpened.

It had crossed the threshold.

The Entity looked around.

Its silver eyes examined the battlefield.

The adaptive network remained invisible.

The Entity took one step.

Nothing happened.

Another.

Still nothing.

It smiled.

“You improved the trap.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

“You noticed.”

“Of course.”

“You still came.”

“Because I know something you don't.”

Kael stood.

“What?”

The Entity's body stabilized.

“You still think I want to escape.”

Kael's expression changed.

The Entity continued.

“I don't.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“Then why are you here?”

The Entity pointed toward him.

“I want you.”

Silence.

Kael tightened his grip around the Origin Blade.

“What does that mean?”

The Entity answered:

“You are the only thing in this world that can become what I need.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“What do you need?”

The Entity smiled.

“A successor.”

The Trap Activates

Kael didn't answer.

He raised his hand.

Metal Control.

Nothing happened.

The Entity smiled.

“You are using the same strategy.”

Kael smiled back.

“No.”

He snapped his fingers.

The battlefield changed.

One anchor activated.

Then another.

Then twenty.

Then hundreds.

The entire forest became a shifting network.

The Entity's expression changed.

The first spatial field activated.

The Entity moved.

The field disappeared.

A second appeared somewhere else.

The Entity stepped sideways.

A mana-disruption node activated.

The Entity countered.

A third structure appeared behind it.

The Entity turned.

The trap had no fixed pattern.

The System displayed:

[Adaptive Battlefield Network active.]

The Entity looked around.

“Interesting.”

Kael fired.

A Spatial Anchor appeared.

The Entity broke it.

Another appeared behind it.

The Entity broke that too.

A third appeared.

Then a fourth.

Then five.

The Entity suddenly found itself surrounded.

Kael smiled.

“This isn't a cage.”

The Entity looked at him.

“Then what is it?”

Kael raised the Shadow Seal.

“A decision.”

The Choice

The network suddenly stopped attacking.

Every anchor went silent.

The forest returned to normal.

The Entity stared.

“What are you doing?”

Kael held the vessel in one hand.

The Shadow Seal in the other.

Then he deliberately lowered both.

“I'll make you an offer.”

The Entity's silver eyes narrowed.

“I'm listening.”

Kael pointed toward the vessel.

“This prison is collapsing.”

“Yes.”

“You want out.”

“No.”

Kael frowned.

The Entity smiled.

“I want control.”

Kael stared.

“Control of what?”

The Entity answered:

“The Fifth Path.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“You can't control Change.”

“Neither could your ancestor.”

Kael stepped forward.

“What happened to him?”

The Entity's voice became quiet.

“He understood too late.”

“Understood what?”

“Change does not belong to the one who creates it.”

Kael frowned.

“Then why do you want it?”

The Entity pointed toward Kael.

“Because you can carry it.”

Kael remained silent.

The Entity continued:

“Give me your Fifth Path.”

Kael laughed.

“No.”

The Entity's expression became colder.

“Then you will eventually fail.”

“Maybe.”

Kael lifted the vessel.

“But you still need me.”

Silence.

Kael smiled.

“That's the important part.”

The Entity stared.

For the first time—

Kael had the advantage.

Not because he was stronger.

Because the Entity needed something from him.

The Contract That Never Happened

The Entity stepped closer.

“Then make your offer.”

Kael thought carefully.

He didn't want a contract.

Contracts could be twisted.

He didn't want to give away his Fifth Path.

He didn't want to release the entity.

He wanted it inside the vessel.

Contained.

Temporary.

Controlled.

He held up the vessel.

“You enter this willingly.”

The Entity looked at it.

“And?”

“I use the Shadow Seal.”

“You contain me.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“I keep you.”

Silence.

The Entity laughed.

“You think you can contain me forever?”

“No.”

Kael's answer was immediate.

“I only need to contain you until I'm strong enough.”

The Entity became still.

That answer surprised it.

Kael continued:

“You'll remain conscious.”

“You'll retain your memories.”

“You'll be able to communicate.”

“But you won't be able to interfere with the outside world.”

The Entity considered it.

“And what do you gain?”

Kael smiled.

“Information.”

The Entity went silent.

Kael continued:

“Everything you know.”

“The ancient network.”

“The prison.”

“My bloodline.”

“The Fifth Path.”

“The reason the Darvens were targeted.”

“And the truth about my ancestors.”

The Entity's silver eyes brightened.

“You would trade freedom for knowledge.”

Kael shook his head.

“No.”

He raised the Origin Blade.

“I'd trade your freedom for my guarantee that you don't destroy everything before I'm ready.”

The Entity stared at him.

Then—

it laughed.

Long.

Deep.

Almost amused.

“You really are different.”

The Manifestation Peaks

The Entity's body suddenly became more complete.

Black armor formed across its chest.

Its arms stabilized.

Its head became visible.

Its silver eyes became brighter.

The System flashed.

[Ancient Entity Awakening: 19% → 24%.]

Kael's expression changed.

The Shadow Seal reacted.

[Compression compatibility: 43% → 59%.]

Kael immediately understood.

The Entity was approaching the point where the Seal could work.

But it was also becoming more powerful.

The entity raised one hand.

The forest bent.

Reality distorted.

Kael activated the adaptive network.

Hundreds of nodes moved.

The Entity countered.

Kael changed them again.

For the first time—

the Entity couldn't immediately predict the battlefield.

Kael smiled.

“Now.”

The Shadow Seal activated.

A black ring appeared beneath the Entity.

The vessel opened.

The Entity's expression changed.

“What have you done?”

Kael raised the seal.

“You chose to stay.”

The Entity attempted to retreat.

A spatial anchor activated behind it.

Another.

Another.

The network closed.

The Entity attacked.

Kael blocked.

BOOM!

He was thrown backward.

He rolled.

The Entity moved toward the forest.

Kael activated the Fifth Path.

The battlefield changed.

The route disappeared.

The Entity encountered another spatial lock.

It turned.

A second path vanished.

A third opened.

The Entity hesitated.

Kael smiled.

“You can't predict a battlefield that changes faster than you can analyze it.”

The Entity's silver eyes narrowed.

Then—

it attacked directly.

Kael charged too.

The Origin Blade met the black arm.

BOOM!

The collision shook the forest.

Kael pushed.

The Entity pushed harder.

His arms trembled.

The Shadow Seal grew brighter.

[Compression compatibility: 59% → 67%.]

Kael gritted his teeth.

“Almost…”

The Entity whispered:

“You are making a mistake.”

Kael pushed harder.

“What mistake?”

“You think I am trapped because I cannot leave.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The Entity smiled.

“I'm trapped because I am waiting.”

Kael froze.

The Shadow Seal suddenly flickered.

The Entity released a pulse.

Every adaptive node around the battlefield shut down.

Kael's eyes widened.

“How?”

The Entity answered:

“I learned.”

The entire network went dark.

The Shadow Seal's compatibility began falling.

67% → 61%.

Kael's expression hardened.

The Entity stepped forward.

“Your trap taught me enough.”

Kael raised his blade.

“Then I'll change it again.”

The Entity smiled.

“Do it.”

Kael activated the Fifth Path.

The battlefield changed.

But this time—

the Entity changed too.

Two forces.

Both adapting.

Neither willing to surrender.

The Shadow Seal continued glowing.

The vessel waited.

And the Entity's awakening climbed.

[24% → 27%.]

Kael stared at the number.

The moment was approaching.

But now—

the ancient entity was finally taking him seriously.

And Chapter 123's final warning appeared in the System:

[Target has entered Adaptive Awakening.]

[Future manifestations will become increasingly difficult to seal.]

Kael tightened his grip.

“Then I better seal you before you learn too much.”

The Entity smiled.

“Try.”

The forest exploded into motion.
