The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Chapter 59: The Weight of a Name

  • Next Chapter

The Council Chamber remained deathly silent.

No one celebrated.

No one applauded.

Even the nobles who agreed with the decree understood...

History had just changed.

Luc Cor Aurelius stood alone in the center of the chamber.

His shoulders remained straight.

His posture remained perfect.

But everyone could see it.

Something inside him had broken.

The Emperor spoke once more.

"The decree has been issued."

"It shall be recorded by every governor."

"Every magistrate."

"Every military office."

"Every academy."

"Every noble registry."

He looked across the chamber.

"No further discussion."

The Grand Herald struck the marble floor.

BOOM!

"The Imperial Council is dismissed."

Immediately...

The chamber erupted.

Not publicly.

Quietly.

Dangerously.

Groups of nobles began whispering.

Military officers argued among themselves.

Scholars hurried toward the exits.

Messengers ran through the palace.

By sunset...

Every province would know.

Outside the Council

Kael exited the chamber with Walter, Leon, Iris, Darius, and Grom.

No one spoke.

The palace corridors were unusually quiet.

Even servants whispered.

Walter finally broke the silence.

"I don't like this."

Leon nodded.

"It feels..."

He searched for the word.

"...wrong."

Grom remained silent.

His eyes stayed on the polished marble floor.

Kael noticed.

"Grom."

The old goblin looked up.

"Yes, Your Highness?"

"What are you thinking?"

Grom smiled sadly.

"I've seen this before."

Everyone stopped walking.

"In goblin lands..."

"Strong tribes once marked weaker tribes with different tattoos."

"They said it was only for organization."

"They said everyone still belonged."

He laughed bitterly.

"A generation later..."

"The marked tribes weren't allowed to become chiefs."

"They married only among themselves."

"Their children inherited the mark."

He looked toward the palace.

"It ended in blood."

Silence.

Kael didn't reply.

He didn't have to.

The lesson spoke for itself.

Luc Returns

As they reached the palace gardens...

Someone called out.

"Prince Kael."

Luc approached slowly.

No...

Luc Cor Aurelius.

Even Kael noticed how uncomfortable the new name sounded.

Lucian forced a smile.

"I wanted to thank you."

Kael frowned.

"For what?"

"For yesterday."

"You treated me like..."

He hesitated.

"...family."

Walter looked away.

Luc laughed quietly.

"I suppose that's ironic now."

Kael stepped closer.

"Luc."

The young noble looked up.

"I'm going to ask you something."

"I want an honest answer."

Luc nodded.

"I'll answer."

"When you woke up this morning..."

"Were you proud to be an Aurelius?"

Lucian answered immediately.

"Yes."

"And now?"

The smile disappeared.

"...I don't know."

The words struck Kael harder than any weapon.

The Branch Families Gather

News traveled faster than horses.

By evening...

Hundreds of branch family members had gathered outside the Imperial Registry.

Some demanded answers.

Others wanted to see the decree with their own eyes.

Some simply stood there.

Silent.

An elderly woman clutched the hand of her grandson.

"They changed our name..."

The boy looked confused.

"Grandmother..."

"Did we do something wrong?"

The old woman couldn't answer.

She simply hugged him.

Across the square...

A former Imperial Knight quietly removed the Aurelius crest from his cloak.

He stared at it for a long time.

Then placed it in his pocket.

Not because he hated the Empire.

Because...

For the first time...

He wasn't sure the Empire loved him back.

The Hidden Meeting

That night...

Far beneath the capital...

Inside abandoned catacombs...

Several hooded figures gathered around a stone table.

None revealed their faces.

Only their voices.

"The decree has begun."

"Our supporters are growing."

"The branch families are angry."

"They finally understand."

One younger man slammed his fist onto the table.

"We should rise now."

"We have the numbers."

An older woman shook her head.

"No."

"Not yet."

"They're emotional."

"Emotion starts revolutions."

"It doesn't win them."

A hooded elder sitting at the head of the table finally spoke.

"Our time will come."

He looked toward the ceiling.

Toward the palace above.

"For now..."

"We watch."

Unknown to them...

A tiny blue bird perched near a broken pillar.

Completely still.

Its eyes glowed faintly.

The Imperial System

A notification appeared before Kael, who was resting in his room.

Kael's eyes widened.

"So..."

"The bird..."

He focused.

Instantly...

His vision shifted.

For a brief moment...

He was seeing through the tiny blue bird's eyes.

The catacombs.

The hooded figures.

The secret meeting.

The system immediately interrupted.

Kael silently watched.

He couldn't hear every word.

Only fragments.

"...rebellion..."

"...Cor..."

"...the Emperor..."

"...time..."

Then...

The hooded elder suddenly stopped speaking.

He slowly turned toward the bird.

"..."

Silence.

"Interesting."

The old man's voice echoed through the chamber.

"We have a guest."

Every hooded figure looked upward.

Toward the tiny blue bird.

Kael's heartbeat quickened.

"Can he... sense system constructs?"

The elder smiled beneath his hood.

"Tell your master..."

"...the game has begun."

He raised one finger.

A streak of dark mana shot through the air.

CRACK!

The blue bird shattered into glowing fragments.

Kael's vision snapped back into his room.

He instinctively took one step backward.

The connection had been severed.

The system appeared.

Reconnaissance Failed

Construct Destroyed.

An unknown individual possesses extraordinary perception.

New Codename Assigned:

The Veiled Sage

Information Level:

Classified

Kael slowly sat down.

This was the first time...

Someone had noticed one of the system's abilities.

Someone powerful enough to destroy it without hesitation.

He looked out the window toward the sleeping capital.

The Cor Decree had done more than divide the empire.

It had awakened forces that had been hiding in the shadows for years.

And somehow...

They already knew his name.
