The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 337: the last no
For several heartbeats, nobody moved.
The frost on the road melted first.
It receded from the cracks in the stone in thin silver lines, leaving behind only dampness and a scattering of pale crystals that could have been mistaken for ordinary ice if Kael had not watched them become the outline of a woman less than a minute earlier. His hands remained against the ground where he had fallen, fingers spread across stone that should have been warm from the volcanic ridge but had gone cold enough to numb his skin.
Darius was still staring at him.
Not at Theron.
Not at the frost.
At him.
Kael heard the words again.
Your mother had one.
But you should not have one.
"What does that mean?"
Darius’s eyes shifted toward Theron.
"Later."
Kael almost laughed.
Of course.
Three hundred questions had just entered his life, and Theron Vance was still standing several yards away with enough stolen draconic power inside him to kill everyone on the road.
Theron flexed the arm the spirit had frozen.
Ice cracked from his skin and dropped around his boots. Dark-red veins brightened beneath the flesh, forcing heat through muscles that had already begun failing long before the spirit appeared. He rotated the wrist once, slowly, testing it.
Then he looked at Kael.
"Your mother."
Kael pushed himself upright.
One knee first.
Then the other.
His ribs protested so violently that his vision blurred at the edges, but he stood.
Theron watched.
"What was she?"
Darius answered before Kael could.
"Nothing that concerns you."
Theron turned his head.
The pale pupils narrowed.
"Everything about him seems to concern me."
Darius tried to stand.
The healer beside him pressed one hand against his chest.
This time Darius did not brush her away.
That frightened Kael more than if he had.
Unbroken Battlefield flickered around him, thin enough that Kael could barely feel its edge. Darius’s new Awakening still existed, but the man carrying it had reached the point where skill could no longer negotiate endlessly with blood loss, broken structure, and exhaustion.
Theron noticed that too.
His mouth curved.
"There it is."
Darius’s expression did not change.
Theron looked back at Kael.
"Another inheritance."
Kael frowned.
Theron’s breathing came heavier.
"You were born with a throne behind you. A House waiting for your name. An Emperor for a father. A bloodline people have spent centuries kneeling to." He raised the arm the spirit had frozen. "And when I finally find something no one can give me or take away from me, even death itself reaches for you and says no."
Kael stared at him.
The System opened without being called.
[Hostile entity condition worsening.]
[Foreign Core integration instability: extreme.]
[Multiple organ systems approaching failure.]
[Physical output remains abnormally elevated.]
[Prediction reliability reduced due unstable core behavior.]
Kael dismissed it.
"That thing was not mine."
Theron’s smile sharpened.
"Convenient."
"I did not summon her."
"Still came."
Kael had no answer to that.
Theron did.
"That is the difference between us."
Rask pulled himself out of the drainage ditch several yards away. Blood darkened one sleeve, and dirt covered half his face from where Theron’s earlier strike had thrown him from the road. He stayed low after reaching the shoulder, one hand braced on his knee.
"No," he said.
Theron looked toward him.
Rask spat blood into the grass.
"That is the difference you need there to be."
Vance’s expression hardened.
Rask continued. "You need Kael to have everything handed to him because then every choice you made becomes necessary."
Theron’s shoulders tightened.
"Careful."
Rask gave him a tired look.
"That stopped meaning much hours ago."
The guards around Captain Rolan remained back.
Smart.
Rolan had lowered every spear after seeing what a single pointed weapon did to Theron’s challenge response. The broken shaft from the guard Theron had nearly struck lay near the roadside, one half split into a jagged point.
Kael noticed it.
Theron noticed Kael noticing it.
Neither moved.
Rask took another step.
"You wanted the core before the first attack."
"I know what I wanted."
"You wanted strength."
"Yes."
"You got it."
Theron looked at his hands.
For the first time since consuming the Ash-King’s core, nobody contradicted him.
He had gotten strength.
Enough to force drakes down.
Enough to shatter stone.
Enough to move through injuries that should have ended any normal fighter.
Enough to stand against Darius while the Imperial Shield was still capable of fighting.
Enough to nearly kill Kael.
Rask nodded.
"Was it enough?"
Theron’s face emptied.
The road went quiet.
Kael could hear the wind brushing through the grass below the slope.
Farther east, wagon wheels continued moving.
Their people were leaving.
Alive.
That mattered.
Theron looked toward the distant bend where the final wagon had disappeared.
Then back toward Rask.
"What kind of question is that?"
"The last one."
Theron’s jaw tightened.
Rask gestured around them.
"The Ash-King is dead. The trapped people are out. The Vanguard survivors are moving east. The drakes are away from them. You got more power than any of us thought you would."
Rask’s breathing hitched around his injured ribs.
He ignored it.
"Was it enough?"
Theron looked at Darius.
Then Kael.
Then his own body.
One leg stood at an angle that no healthy hip should allow. His left shoulder sagged lower than the right. Blood ran from his nose, both eyes, and several places where the skin over the dark veins had split. His chest rose unevenly, every third breath shallower than the ones before.
Theron smiled.
"No."
Rask closed his eyes.
Kael had expected the answer.
It still hurt.
Theron looked toward Darius.
"Because he is still standing."
Darius was not standing.
He was kneeling beside the healer.
That did not matter to Theron.
Darius understood.
"So that is all this became."
Theron’s eyes narrowed.
Darius continued. "Not freedom."
The dark veins brightened.
"Not your people."
Theron’s fists closed.
"Not independence."
Darius pushed one foot beneath himself.
The healer swore quietly.
"Sir Darius—"
He raised one hand.
Not at her.
Toward Theron.
"Comparison."
Theron stared.
Darius got upright.
Barely.
His left arm remained useless.
His injured leg trembled.
Unbroken Battlefield spread around him again.
Ten feet.
No more.
The Aura felt thin.
But controlled.
Theron’s mouth twisted.
"You think I need to prove myself to you?"
"No."
Darius breathed.
"You need to prove yourself to the version of you who swallowed that core."
Something moved behind Theron’s face.
Kael saw it.
Darius did too.
"If you stop now," Darius continued, "then you have to ask whether any of it was necessary."
Theron’s voice came low.
"Do not."
"If you admit the power was not worth everything—"
"Stop."
"Then the dead become harder to explain."
Theron moved.
Darius felt it.
Unbroken Battlefield contracted.
Kael felt the warning through the road before Theron’s first step finished.
Darius shifted.
Theron crossed the distance.
His fist came for Darius’s head.
Darius turned outside the line.
The punch missed.
Theron’s second strike came from the left.
Slower.
The damaged arm.
Darius raised his good forearm and redirected it.
Theron pivoted.
His hip failed.
The entire leg collapsed.
The core surged.
Too late.
His knee hit the road.
Darius stepped back.
Did not strike.
Theron stared down at himself.
The veins along his thigh brightened violently.
The leg forced itself straight.
Blood spread through the torn fabric.
Darius watched.
"Your body said no."
Theron’s head lifted.
"It does not decide."
Darius’s expression hardened.
"That is the only thing left you cannot command."
Theron roared.
He attacked again.
The first punch missed.
The second clipped Darius’s chest.
Darius stumbled.
Theron followed.
Kael moved.
Not with mana.
He had none worth trusting.
He ran for the broken spear shaft.
His calf almost failed halfway there.
He caught himself.
Grabbed the wood.
Turned.
Theron had Darius by the front of his armor.
Kael drove the jagged shaft toward Theron’s side.
Vance released Darius and caught the wood.
His hand closed.
The spear shaft cracked.
Kael let go before Theron could use it to drag him forward.
Theron threw the broken wood away.
Kael stepped inside.
Fist to the damaged ribs.
No Ice.
No Aura beyond the smallest reinforcement he could still manage.
Theron barely felt it.
Kael struck again.
Same place.
Theron caught him by the shoulder.
Darius moved.
Unbroken Battlefield compressed around Kael’s footing.
A tiny reinforcement.
Enough.
When Theron tried to throw him, Kael stayed grounded half a heartbeat longer than expected.
Darius struck Theron’s elbow.
The grip opened.
Kael escaped.
Theron turned toward Darius.
Darius stepped away.
Theron followed.
That was the pattern.
Not damage.
Not victory.
Spend him.
Make every movement cost something his core could not replace.
Theron understood after the third exchange.
His expression changed.
"You are waiting."
Darius said nothing.
Theron laughed breathlessly.
"You cannot beat me."
"No."
That answer stopped him.
Darius breathed.
"We do not need to."
Theron looked toward Kael.
Kael understood too.
The System had been saying it for hours.
Vessel failure probable.
Critical instability.
Output increasing while structure deteriorated.
Theron Vance was stronger than all of them at this moment.
He was also dying every time he used that strength.
Kael raised his hands.
"Your core loses if you stop."
Theron’s pupils narrowed.
"And it loses if you keep going."
Rask stared.
Theron did not.
He smiled.
"Then I decide how."
He attacked.
This time there was no technique left in it.
No testing.
No argument.
Theron drove forward with everything.
The road broke under his foot.
Darius’s field tightened.
Kael went right.
Darius went left.
Theron chose Kael.
Of course.
He crossed the gap and swung.
Kael ducked.
The fist passed overhead and struck the granite wall.
Stone fractured.
Theron’s arm bent unnaturally from the impact.
The core corrected.
Muscle tightened.
Bone realigned enough to move.
Kael stepped behind him and kicked the damaged hip.
Theron staggered.
Darius felt the opening.
Aura struck through the field.
Not a huge blast.
A concentrated force against Theron’s planted ankle.
The foot shifted.
His hip rotated.
The joint failed.
Theron fell.
He caught himself with one hand.
Kael backed away.
Darius did not attack.
Theron looked at both of them.
Rage crossed his face.
"Fight me."
Darius remained still.
Theron pushed upright.
"Fight me!"
Kael shook his head.
"We are."
Theron charged Darius.
Darius retreated.
One step.
Two.
Theron punched.
Missed.
Darius redirected the second.
Theron’s damaged shoulder tore.
Kael heard it.
The arm dropped.
The core flooded into it.
Theron screamed.
Not from anger.
Pain.
The shoulder rose again.
Kael’s System flashed.
[Left shoulder structural failure severe.]
[Core compensation active.]
[Cardiac rhythm unstable.]
[Internal bleeding increasing.]
Theron hit Darius with the repaired arm.
Darius flew.
Unbroken Battlefield collapsed.
He struck the road and stayed there.
Kael’s stomach dropped.
"Darius!"
The Commander moved.
One hand.
Enough.
Alive.
Theron turned toward Kael.
"Now."
Kael had no field protecting him.
No Ice Spirit.
He felt for her.
Nothing.
Only himself.
Good.
Maybe that had to be enough.
Theron stepped forward.
Kael looked toward the granite wall.
The drainage ditch.
The slope.
The broken spear pieces.
The blood beneath Theron’s boots.
Decisions.
Darius’s lesson had infected him too.
Kael retreated toward the ditch.
Theron followed.
"You are running."
"Yes."
Theron almost laughed.
Kael backed farther.
His injured calf slipped.
He caught himself on the ditch edge.
Theron came closer.
Kael reached with Blood Sensing.
Not control.
Awareness.
The exposed blood told him enough.
Theron’s heartbeat hammered irregularly.
Too fast.
Then paused.
Then slammed again.
Blood pooled beneath the damaged hip.
More collected inside the abdomen where Kael could sense pressure but not manipulate safely.
The right arm remained the only limb still structurally reliable.
Useful.
Theron raised it.
Kael stepped left.
Theron adjusted.
Kael moved right.
Vance’s eyes narrowed.
"What are you doing?"
"Waiting."
Theron’s mouth twisted.
He lunged.
Kael dropped into the drainage ditch.
Theron’s fist passed over him.
Kael grabbed the back of Theron’s damaged leg with both hands.
Not enough strength to pull him.
Enough to change the angle.
Theron’s foot slipped into the ditch.
His hip rotated outward.
The joint failed completely.
Theron fell sideways.
Kael rolled away.
Vance struck the road shoulder.
The core surged.
Nothing happened.
For one heartbeat.
Two.
Theron stared at the leg.
Dark veins blazed.
Muscle contracted.
The hip moved.
Barely.
Theron dragged himself upright.
Kael saw the fear.
Finally.
Not fear of them.
Fear that the power had stopped answering quickly enough.
"You feel it."
Theron looked toward him.
Kael continued.
"It is not listening."
"The core is fine."
"No."
Theron stood.
The bad leg dragged.
"It is fine."
Kael shook his head.
"You sound like every man who knows the bridge is breaking but keeps marching because turning around would admit he chose the wrong road."
Theron swung.
Kael ducked.
The strike missed.
Theron’s momentum carried him two steps.
The bad leg could not stop him.
He hit the granite wall with his shoulder.
The core surged.
His back arched.
Blood spilled from his mouth.
Rask moved closer.
"Theron."
Vance looked toward him.
Rask’s eyes were wet.
"Enough."
Theron shook his head.
"Do not."
Rask stepped into the road.
Kael wanted to stop him.
Did not.
This was theirs.
Rask approached slowly.
Theron tried to raise his good hand.
It trembled.
Rask stopped within arm’s reach.
"You won."
Theron stared.
Rask nodded.
"You killed the Ash-King."
"We killed it."
"Then we did."
Theron’s face changed.
"You got us out."
Silence.
"You found power nobody could give you."
Theron’s mouth opened.
Rask continued.
"You proved you could take it."
The pale pupils flickered.
"Now stop."
Theron looked past him toward Darius.
Darius had reached one knee.
Still there.
Always.
Theron’s jaw clenched.
Rask stepped sideways and blocked the view.
"No."
Theron’s eyes narrowed.
"Move."
"No."
The challenge response came.
Weak.
The veins brightened.
Then dimmed.
Rask saw.
"So did your body."
Theron looked at him.
"Do not make that sound meaningful."
"It is."
Rask touched Theron’s chest.
Not hard.
Two fingers over the sternum.
"Everybody has something they cannot order."
Theron’s breathing hitched.
Rask’s voice softened.
"Even you."
For one heartbeat, Theron Vance simply stood.
No Dominion.
No challenge.
No core surge.
Just a man.
Then he smiled.
Small.
Tired.
"You stole my boots."
Rask laughed.
It broke halfway through.
"You had two pairs."
"One after you."
Theron’s eyes closed.
Kael felt the moment changing.
The System did too.
[Cardiac rhythm deteriorating.]
[Foreign Core output fluctuating.]
[Host consciousness instability increasing.]
Rask grabbed Theron’s shoulders.
"Stay with me."
Theron opened his eyes.
Human pupils.
"That sounded like an order."
Rask’s mouth shook.
"Request."
Theron almost smiled.
Then his entire body seized.
The Draconic Core surged harder than ever before.
Dark veins erupted across his chest.
Theron screamed.
Rask was thrown backward by the convulsion.
Kael moved.
Darius’s Aura returned.
Weak.
A thread of Unbroken Battlefield crossed the road and caught Rask before his head struck stone.
Darius collapsed immediately afterward.
Theron remained standing.
Not by choice.
His body arched as something inside the chest burned.
The System filled Kael’s vision.
[CRITICAL CORE-HOST REJECTION.]
[Foreign mana pressure exceeding vessel tolerance.]
[Cardiac failure imminent.]
[Circulatory rupture detected.]
[Neurological integrity deteriorating.]
[Host control over core: failing.]
Theron looked at Kael.
Pale pupils.
Then human.
Then pale.
"I cannot stop it."
There.
The first admission.
Kael moved closer.
"What do you feel?"
Theron laughed once.
Blood sprayed from his mouth.
"Everything."
His right hand clawed at his chest.
"Too much."
Kael opened Blood Sensing.
The internal picture was chaos.
Heartbeat irregular.
Blood pressure spiking and crashing.
Heat around the sternum.
A dense foreign presence deeper inside.
The core.
Not in the stomach anymore.
Integrated.
Anchored behind the breastbone and around structures Kael could not safely separate while Theron lived.
The System offered no extraction path.
Good.
No miracle.
Kael looked at Rask.
Then Darius.
No answer.
Theron found one himself.
His hand tightened over his chest.
"Cut it out."
Rask stared.
"No."
Theron looked at Kael.
"Do it."
Kael shook his head.
"I do not know how."
"You have a System."
"It does not know either."
For the first time, Theron looked offended by reality itself.
Then he laughed.
A real laugh.
Small.
Broken.
"Of course."
The core surged again.
Theron’s knees hit the road.
Kael caught one shoulder.
Rask caught the other.
Theron looked between them.
"Do not hold me."
Rask did not release.
Theron looked tired.
Not angry.
Just tired.
Darius reached them.
Kael had no idea how.
He walked like every step had to be negotiated separately with death.
The healer followed, furious and terrified.
Darius stopped in front of Theron.
Unbroken Battlefield barely extended beyond his skin now.
Theron looked up.
"You are still standing."
Darius glanced at his own shaking leg.
"Technically."
Theron laughed again.
Then coughed blood.
Darius lowered himself slowly.
Theron watched.
"I hated you."
"I know."
"No. You did not."
Darius waited.
Theron’s breath rattled.
"You were everything I hated about the Empire."
Darius’s eyebrow moved slightly.
"That seems excessive."
Rask almost laughed.
Theron did.
Pain cut it short.
"Shield. Title. Oath. Reputation. Men listen when you speak."
Darius nodded.
"Yes."
"And you chose all of it."
"Yes."
Theron looked toward Kael.
Then back.
"That was the part I never understood."
Darius said nothing.
Theron’s eyes drifted toward the eastern road.
Where his people had gone.
"I thought choice only mattered if nobody could take it away."
Darius’s voice came quietly.
"Nothing makes choice permanent."
Theron frowned.
"Then what is the point?"
"Choosing again."
Rask bowed his head.
Theron stared at Darius.
For several seconds, the core quieted.
Maybe it had no answer either.
Then a distant drake roared from the north.
Theron’s head turned instinctively.
The Dominion twitched.
Weak.
A second roar answered.
Theron’s hand lifted.
Rask grabbed it.
"No."
Theron stared at him.
Rask tightened his grip.
"No more."
The challenge response tried to rise.
The core surged.
Theron’s body failed before the aggression could become motion.
His right arm dropped.
The pale pupils faded.
He looked toward the forest.
Then toward Rask.
"Are they far enough?"
Rask swallowed.
"Yes."
Theron looked at Kael.
"Your people?"
"Safe."
"Mine?"
Kael looked toward the road.
"Safe."
Theron’s eyes closed.
His shoulders lowered.
For the first time since he swallowed the Ash-King’s core, the man stopped fighting his own body.
The effect was immediate.
The draconic reinforcement vanished from the ruined hip.
The leg folded under him.
The damaged shoulder sagged.
Every injury the core had been forcing past its limits arrived at once.
Kael and Rask lowered him to the road.
Theron gasped.
Not from one wound.
All of them.
Darius’s field wrapped around him for the last time.
Thin.
Barely there.
Enough to keep his neck aligned.
Enough to reduce the pain of one movement.
Theron noticed.
"You are doing it again."
Darius looked at him.
"Yes."
"Fool."
"Frequently."
Theron smiled.
Then his chest seized.
The System flashed.
[Cardiac arrest imminent.]
Kael looked toward the healer.
She was already there.
Hands at Theron’s chest.
Checking pulse.
Breathing.
Nothing she could do about a foreign Draconic Core fused inside him.
Theron’s eyes opened once more.
He looked at Rask.
"Do not rebuild it like me."
Rask froze.
"The Vanguard?"
Theron’s mouth barely moved.
"Anything."
Rask’s face crumpled.
Theron shifted his eyes toward Kael.
"You wanted to build an empire."
Kael’s breath caught.
Theron had remembered.
From the Guild.
Blackwood.
All the conversations about Houses, systems, institutions.
Theron continued with effort.
"Make sure... people can leave."
Kael thought of Blackwood’s villages.
The Guild.
House oaths.
Settlers allowed to reject placement.
Everything Theron had spent the last hours accusing him of becoming.
"I will."
Theron’s eyes moved toward Darius.
"Tell him..."
He stopped.
Darius waited.
Theron breathed once.
Twice.
"Never mind."
Darius nodded.
No demand.
No forcing unfinished words into meaning.
Theron’s chest rose.
Did not fall immediately.
Then fell.
The dark veins beneath his skin brightened one final time.
The light collapsed inward.
The System appeared.
Kael did not want to read it.
He did anyway.
[Host cardiovascular activity: ceased.]
[Neurological activity: ceased.]
[Foreign Draconic Core remains active.]
[Host status: deceased.]
Rask made no sound.
That was worse.
He sat beside Theron Vance and held the dead man’s hand as though fifteen years could still be found somewhere inside the fingers.
The healer lowered her head.
Darius closed his eyes.
Kael looked toward the northern forest.
A drake called.
No command answered.
Another called farther away.
The Dominion was gone.
The wind moved over the road.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the mountain behind them roared.
Not a drake.
The Caldera.
The ground jumped beneath Kael’s knees.
A column of dark ash burst above the western ridge.
Captain Rolan shouted from farther east.
"We need to move!"
Of course.
No death waited for grief.
Kael looked at Theron’s body.
The System remained open.
One line had appeared beneath the death confirmation.
[High-Grade Draconic Core detected within deceased host.]
[Core stability: compromised but recoverable.]
[Residual Dominion signature present.]
Recoverable.
Kael hated the timing.
Rask saw his face.
"What?"
Kael hesitated.
Darius opened his eyes.
"The core?"
Kael nodded.
"Still active."
Rask’s expression changed.
"No."
Kael looked toward him.
Rask’s grip tightened around Theron’s hand.
"You are not cutting him open on this road."
"We cannot leave that core in him."
"Why?"
"Because if a drake finds the body—"
Rask looked away.
He understood.
Darius spoke quietly.
"And because the Caldera is about to bury the road."
Rask stared at Theron.
The mountain shook again.
Closer.
The healer looked toward the ridge.
"We have minutes."
Maybe.
No honest number.
Kael hated those too.
He looked at the System.
No extraction instructions.
No safe anatomy map.
Only location.
Behind the sternum.
Deep.
The healer followed Kael’s gaze despite being unable to see the window.
"Where?"
Kael touched his own chest.
"Here."
She looked at Theron’s body.
Then at Kael.
"If it fused into the chest, removing it quickly will not be clean."
"He is dead."
"I know."
Rask flinched.
The healer’s expression softened.
"I know."
Another tremor.
Stone rolled down the slope behind them.
Rolan shouted again.
Kael made the decision.
"Rask."
The man looked at him.
"We take Theron with us."
Rask stared.
Kael continued. "We do not cut him here. We move the body east. If the road gives us enough distance from the Caldera, we recover the core properly."
Darius looked toward the ridge.
"Risk."
"Yes."
"The core may destabilize."
"I know."
Rask looked at Kael.
"Why?"
Kael frowned.
"Why what?"
"Why not take it now?"
Kael looked down at Theron.
Because he had died five seconds ago.
Because Rask had followed him fifteen years.
Because Theron had made terrible choices and still used his last conscious strength to send drakes away from wounded people.
Because necessity did not require cruelty simply because cruelty was faster.
"We have enough time to carry him."
Rask swallowed.
Then nodded.
"Thank you."
No grand speech.
No forgiveness.
Just that.
Rolan’s guards brought another litter.
This one held.
They placed Theron on it.
Rask arranged his arm across his chest.
Darius watched.
The heater—no, healer—tightened the cloth beneath Theron’s head to prevent movement.
Kael almost corrected his own exhausted thought aloud.
He did not.
They lifted.
The Caldera shook again.
This time the western sky darkened.
Ash began falling.
Not much.
Enough.
Rolan appeared at the bend.
His eyes moved from Kael to Theron’s covered body.
He understood without asking.
"Road ahead is still open."
"How far to the wagons?"
"Less than half a mile."
"Move everyone."
Rolan nodded.
The group started east.
Darius took one step.
Stopped.
Kael looked at him.
"No."
Darius frowned.
"We are not doing this."
"I can walk."
Kael pointed toward the nearest wagon.
"No."
Darius looked toward Rolan.
Rolan immediately found something fascinating in the sky.
Rask wiped his face.
"He is right."
Darius looked betrayed.
Rask shrugged.
"I am no longer following Vance. I have room for bad new allegiances."
For the first time since Theron’s death, something almost human returned to the road.
Darius climbed into the wagon.
Not gracefully.
The healer followed.
Good.
Kael walked beside Theron’s litter.
Rask stayed on the other side.
The road descended.
Ash fell behind them.
Theron’s face remained uncovered for the first hundred yards.
Then Rask took a spare cloth and placed it over him.
Kael did not stop him.
The System remained quiet.
No reward.
No completed quest.
No announcement that justice had been served.
Good.
Theron Vance was dead because his body could not contain the power he had chosen to consume.
Darius had not defeated him.
Kael had not defeated him.
Rask had not talked him down in time.
The Ash-King’s core had given Theron exactly what he asked for.
Power nobody else could take away.
And then his own body had become the one thing capable of refusing it.
The last no had come from inside him.
This time, Theron had finally stopped fighting.
