The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 331: The Last Bridge
The air changed before the light did.
Kael noticed it halfway up the charcoal maintenance level, when his next breath came without the same sulfur bite that had coated his tongue for what felt like half a lifetime. The passage still smelled of ash, blood, damp stone, and too many injured people moving through too little space, but somewhere ahead there was cooler air. Real air. Air that had not spent the last century passing through volcanic vents before reaching human lungs.
Nobody celebrated.
The Caldera had taught them not to trust proximity to safety.
The evacuation line stretched farther than Kael could see around the bends behind him. Mara remained near the front with Iris, choosing the route before the wounded committed themselves to it. Davin and Eron carried one litter between them while two of the recovered workers supported another injured survivor between their shoulders. Veyra moved from person to person whenever the line slowed, checking breathing, burns, and bandages rather than remaining with any single patient. Sera and Rask had Milo between them. The mage had regained enough consciousness to complain occasionally, which everyone appeared to have taken as a medical improvement.
Darius walked beside Kael.
That remained a generous description of what either of them was doing.
Darius’s injured leg shortened every third step, while his left shoulder stayed nearly motionless beneath the ruined armor and bandages. Kael’s burned calf had stiffened as the heat decreased, turning what had been sharp pain into an ugly pulling sensation each time he lifted the heel. His ribs had become worse in another way. Every cough now felt deep enough that he could almost imagine the exact place the damaged bone protested.
Neither mentioned it.
Behind them came Theron Vance.
Kael did not need to look around to know where he was.
The drakes made that impossible.
Two remained directly with Theron after the third had died holding the collapsing passage. Their claws scraped the stone in a rhythm that did not belong among human footsteps. Farther below and behind them, other drakes answered occasionally through the rock, some near enough for the vibration to travel through the floor.
Theron heard each one before anyone else.
That had become another problem.
Iris returned from the next bend at a quick walk rather than her usual quiet pace. Her face told Kael enough before she reached Mara.
"There is a bridge."
Mara stopped.
"What kind?"
"Old maintenance crossing. Stone deck, iron side braces. Spans one of the upper ventilation cuts."
Mara’s expression tightened. "I know it."
Rask looked forward from beside Milo. "Still there?"
"Mostly."
That word moved through the group.
Mara folded the small route map against one palm. "Mostly is not a condition."
Iris wiped ash from her cheek with the back of her wrist. "Then you should see it."
The line slowed while Mara moved ahead with her. Galahad immediately began spreading people along the passage so the entire evacuation did not compress into one mass behind a problem nobody had assessed yet. Kael watched him work for several seconds. Galahad had taken enough blows that one side of his face had begun swelling around the temple, but he remained the only person who seemed capable of looking at thirty wounded, exhausted people and seeing something other than thirty individual emergencies.
Theron moved toward the front.
The two drakes moved with him.
Several rescued workers recoiled.
Vance noticed.
He stopped.
For one moment, something human and tired passed through his expression.
Then he looked at the drakes.
"Stay."
Both creatures lowered themselves.
The wounded line relaxed slightly.
Not enough.
Rask watched Theron from ten yards away.
Theron noticed.
Neither man said anything.
Kael moved past them toward the crossing.
The bridge appeared around the next turn.
It had once been broad enough for two loaded carts to pass side by side. Time and the Caldera had reduced that confidence considerably. The stone deck crossed a black ventilation cut perhaps forty feet wide, with darkness below interrupted by faint red light far beneath. Iron braces ran beneath the bridge in triangular supports anchored into both cliff faces. Several had rusted almost through. One section of the parapet had vanished entirely. Near the middle, a fracture crossed the deck from one side to the other.
Mara knelt beside the first anchoring plate.
She touched the stone.
Then the iron.
Then looked underneath.
"No drakes."
Theron had reached the turn behind them.
"I did not say anything."
"You were going to."
Kael almost smiled.
Apparently everyone had learned that trick.
Mara stood and pointed across the span. "People cross. One litter at a time. No groups larger than four on the middle section. Nobody stops on the crack. If you drop something, it belongs to the mountain."
Theron looked across.
"The drakes can go around."
Iris followed his gaze toward the walls above the ventilation cut. "Maybe."
"They can climb."
"So could the Ash-King."
Theron’s jaw tightened at the comparison.
Iris continued before he could answer. "The upper wall on the far side has loose shelves. If one of your drakes pulls the wrong section free while climbing, it may drop onto the bridge."
Vance looked at the creatures behind him.
"Then they wait."
Mara nodded once.
Good.
The first walking survivors crossed.
Slowly.
The bridge made sounds nobody liked.
Small sounds at first.
Stone grinding against stone.
Iron clicking inside old sockets.
The rescued people kept moving because Mara stood near the entrance and gave them instructions in the same tone she might have used to explain how to move grain sacks through a narrow storeroom.
"Do not look down. Stay center-left. Three steps past the crack before the next person moves."
The first three reached the other side.
Iris remained there to receive them.
The first litter followed.
Davin and Eron lifted in perfect silence.
The injured man lying between them looked toward the missing parapet.
"Do not."
Davin spoke without looking down.
The man swallowed. "I wasn’t going to."
"You were."
Eron adjusted his grip.
"Everyone is getting good at that."
The litter reached the fracture.
The bridge shifted.
Everyone froze.
Mara looked beneath the deck.
"Keep moving."
Davin’s hands tightened.
"Now?"
"Yes."
"That moved."
"I noticed."
They crossed.
The stone settled again after their weight reached the far side.
One litter safe.
Then another.
The ventilation-station survivors went next. The man with the fractured leg had to be carried. The burn survivor walked between two others, cloth still protecting part of his back from rubbing against clothing. The transfer-cut survivors crossed together until Mara forced them to separate at the midpoint.
Kael counted people without meaning to.
Every person who reached the far side changed something inside him.
Not relief yet.
Completion.
They had gone back for these people.
Dragged them out of side passages.
Carried them through ash.
Cut routes through collapses.
Fought the Ash-King because leaving it alive meant the entire evacuation remained under threat.
Now the same people were crossing toward air that led outside.
That mattered.
Behind Kael, claws scraped.
Theron turned.
One of his drakes had raised its head.
Another roar answered from far below.
Then one closer.
Darius noticed Theron’s posture.
"How many?"
Vance stared toward the passage behind them.
"Four moving this direction."
Kael looked at him.
"You called them?"
"No."
The System appeared.
[Draconic convergence continuing.]
[Dominion attraction probable.]
[Direct command absent.]
Kael closed it.
"They are coming because of you."
Theron looked at him.
"So I stop them when they arrive."
"That worked well for the last one."
Vance’s face hardened.
Rask stepped between the argument and the bridge.
"Not now."
Theron looked toward him.
Rask pointed at the wounded crossing.
"Not while they are halfway over."
For once, Theron said nothing.
The service-pocket survivor crossed.
Then two of the lower-gallery survivors.
Mara kept the rhythm measured.
Nobody hurried until the bridge could handle hurry.
Milo reached the entrance.
Sera had one of his arms.
Rask had the other.
Milo looked at the span.
Then down into the ventilation cut.
"No."
Sera sighed.
"You have fought worse things than a bridge."
"I have fought things that did not require me to walk."
Rask adjusted his grip.
"You are not walking much."
"That is insulting."
"It is accurate."
Milo looked toward Kael.
"Prince."
"No."
"You don’t know what I was going to ask."
"Yes, I do."
Milo frowned.
"I was going to ask whether royalty traditionally carries exhausted mages."
Kael looked at his calf.
"I am traditionally unavailable."
Sera pulled Milo onto the bridge.
The mage groaned as though she had committed a personal betrayal.
Then his expression changed.
He felt something.
Kael saw the shift.
"What?"
Milo looked down.
Not at the drop.
At the bridge.
"The center support is moving."
Mara turned immediately.
"How?"
"Sideways."
"How much?"
Milo closed his eyes.
Kael expected magic.
None came.
Good.
Milo did not have enough.
He was feeling the vibration through his boots, perhaps hearing the metal under strain in the way someone experienced with Force and pressure might recognize.
"Small."
Mara walked to the edge and looked beneath the stone deck.
One of the old diagonal braces trembled.
"Rask. Sera. Keep moving."
They did.
Milo did not argue this time.
The three of them reached the midpoint.
The bridge shifted again.
The diagonal brace slipped inside its socket.
Mara’s face went pale.
"Faster."
Sera looked toward her.
"You said no hurry."
"I changed my mind."
That was enough.
Rask took more of Milo’s weight.
Sera nearly carried the other half.
They passed the crack.
Stone popped beneath their boots.
Milo looked down.
"This is deeply unpleasant."
Sera breathed harder.
"Save the commentary."
"I have very little else."
They reached the far side.
Iris took Milo immediately.
Sera bent with both hands on her knees.
Rask remained standing.
He looked back toward Theron.
Still there.
Watching the lower passage.
Not the bridge.
Rask crossed fully.
Then stopped on the far side.
Theron noticed.
A drake roar came closer.
Darius looked toward Kael.
"We need the rest across."
Galahad had already reached the same conclusion.
"Walking wounded next. Then everyone who can still fight."
Veyra crossed with the last two respiratory cases.
Mara remained on the near side.
Kael frowned.
"You too."
"After the people who do not know the bridge."
"You already told them how."
"And if the brace moves again?"
Kael looked at the iron support.
Fine.
He did not waste time arguing.
Two more Vanguard survivors crossed.
One looked toward Theron before stepping onto the bridge.
"Commander?"
Vance turned.
The man hesitated.
Kael could see the question.
What are we doing?
Not the bridge.
Everything.
Theron looked toward his own people.
"You cross."
The man nodded.
No oath.
No declaration.
He crossed.
Davin and Eron returned to the near side after leaving their litter safely across.
Galahad stared at them.
"What are you doing?"
Davin answered, "There are still people here."
Eron nodded toward Mara.
"And someone has to get her off the bridge when she decides stone is more important than her life."
Mara looked offended.
"I am standing right here."
"That is why I said it."
They stayed.
Kael counted those remaining.
Him.
Darius.
Galahad.
Mara.
Davin.
Eron.
Theron.
Two drakes.
The evacuation itself was almost across.
Good.
Finish it.
The roar from the lower passage came again.
Closer.
A shape moved in the darkness around the bend.
Theron lifted one hand.
"Stay behind me."
Kael glanced at him.
"Was that to us?"
"No."
Good.
The first new drake appeared.
Larger than either of the two already controlled.
Its hide was dark gray beneath ash, with old scars across the chest and one horn chipped near the tip.
It stopped when it saw Theron.
The controlled drakes rose.
A low chorus of growls filled the passage.
Theron’s veins brightened.
"Down."
The new drake did not kneel.
Its head lowered.
Not submission.
Challenge.
Darius shifted his sword.
Theron raised his other hand.
"Do not."
Darius looked toward him.
Vance kept his eyes on the drake.
"I have it."
The drake stepped forward.
Theron’s jaw tightened.
"Down."
The Dominion hit.
Kael could not see the force itself, but he saw its effect.
The creature’s front legs trembled.
Its claws dug into stone.
One knee bent.
Then straightened.
Theron’s nose began bleeding.
The dark veins reached farther across his cheek.
The drake roared.
Theron staggered.
Still he pushed.
"Down."
The creature’s chest struck the floor.
The sound echoed across the bridge.
On the far side, rescued workers recoiled.
Milo raised his head from where Iris had lowered him against the wall.
Sera watched Theron.
Rask watched more closely.
Theron breathed hard.
The drake remained kneeling.
Another shape appeared behind it.
Then another.
Three.
The two farther back lowered their heads more quickly.
No challenge.
The largest continued fighting.
Theron looked at it.
Kael saw anger enter him.
The drake flattened farther against the ground.
Its claws scraped.
A dark line opened at Theron’s nostril.
Then his ear.
Blood.
Darius spoke quietly.
"You are spending yourself for obedience."
Theron did not look away.
"It challenged me."
"There."
Kael understood what Darius meant.
Theron did not.
Darius continued. "You did not say it threatened anyone."
Vance’s eyes moved toward him.
The Dominion pressure weakened.
The large drake raised its head slightly.
Theron’s anger surged again.
It dropped.
Darius did not step closer.
"You are reacting to challenge."
"I am controlling a monster."
"You are proving it submits."
Theron’s breathing deepened.
The drakes stirred.
Rask called from across the bridge.
"Theron."
Vance looked toward him.
Rask shook his head.
"You already won."
The words landed strangely.
Theron stared.
Rask pointed toward the kneeling drake.
"It is down. Stop."
For several seconds, Vance did nothing.
Then he lowered his hand.
The dark glow beneath the veins dimmed.
The drake remained kneeling.
Theron wiped blood from his nose.
No smile.
No satisfaction.
Only fatigue.
"Stay."
The creature stayed.
Mara looked at the bridge.
"Everyone crosses now."
Theron glanced toward the four additional drakes behind him.
"They cannot come across."
"No."
"They can climb around."
Mara looked at the fractured wall above the ventilation cut.
"Not while people are crossing."
Theron considered.
Then looked toward the drakes.
"Remain."
All five stayed.
Rask closed his eyes briefly.
That mattered.
Theron had left them behind.
For now.
Davin and Eron crossed first.
Then Galahad.
Kael looked at Darius.
"You."
Darius looked at him.
"I am not having this argument."
"Good."
Darius stepped onto the bridge.
He moved slowly.
Not because of fear.
Because the wounded leg could not afford one bad placement.
Mara walked ten feet behind him.
Kael remained at the entrance.
Theron stood farther back.
The bridge clicked.
Darius reached the midpoint.
The failing diagonal brace slipped again.
This time everyone heard it.
Metal screamed beneath the deck.
Mara shouted, "DON’T STOP."
Darius did not.
The central section sagged.
Only inches.
Enough.
Mara moved forward.
Darius turned.
"Keep coming."
"I know."
She crossed the fracture.
Stone shifted under her right foot.
She caught the parapet.
The weakened section broke away.
One leg dropped through.
Darius turned fully.
His injured thigh almost failed.
Kael started forward.
"NO!" Mara shouted.
Kael stopped.
Darius reached her.
One hand.
That was all he had.
He caught the back of Mara’s coat with his sword hand.
The sword dropped.
Metal clanged against stone and slid toward the broken edge.
Darius ignored it.
His fingers tightened in the cloth.
Mara’s lower body hung through the gap.
The bridge sagged.
Kael saw the problem.
Darius could not pull her one-handed without losing his own footing.
Across the span, Rask moved.
Too far.
Iris started.
Mara looked up.
"Do not put more weight on the middle!"
Everyone stopped.
Good.
Still thinking.
Darius crouched carefully.
His bad shoulder could not help.
His injured leg shook.
"Mara."
"What?"
"Get your left knee onto the deck."
"It is already trying."
"Try better."
She almost laughed.
Then reached.
Her boot scraped empty space.
No purchase.
Kael looked beneath the bridge.
The diagonal brace.
Still moving.
No magic worth using.
Ice on the bridge could make footing worse.
Blood useless.
Think.
A rope flew past him.
Iris.
From the far side.
The coil landed near Darius.
He looked at it.
Mara understood.
She caught the rope.
Wrapped it around her forearm.
Darius shifted his grip from her coat to the rope.
Iris and Rask pulled from the far side without stepping onto the central section.
Darius guided rather than lifted.
Mara came up inch by inch.
Her boot found stone.
Then knee.
Then hip.
She rolled onto the deck.
The bridge groaned.
Darius grabbed the rope.
Both moved.
Not quickly.
Precisely.
They reached the far side.
Only then did Darius look back toward his sword.
It lay near the broken section.
One-third of the blade hung over open air.
Kael knew the look.
He also knew what Darius would tell anyone else.
"Leave it."
Darius looked at him across the bridge.
For the first time Kael saw real irritation.
"That is my sword."
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"So was mine."
Sera covered her mouth on the far side.
Darius looked toward the weapon again.
Then toward the bridge.
He left it.
That decision hurt more than his expression showed.
Good.
Structure before possession.
The mountain did not care about famous swords.
Kael stepped onto the bridge.
Theron remained behind.
Kael stopped after three steps.
"Come."
Vance looked at the five drakes.
"They stay."
"You said that."
"I am making sure."
Kael watched him.
The large drake raised its head.
Theron looked at it.
No command.
It lowered the head again.
Interesting.
The Dominion had changed.
Or the creature had learned.
Perhaps both.
Kael continued.
Halfway.
The fracture under his boots opened another hair.
He did not look down.
Three steps.
Five.
The far side approached.
Then the Caldera shook.
Not a tremor.
A violent lateral movement.
The bridge snapped sideways.
Kael hit the stone deck.
His burned calf folded beneath him.
The parapet struck his shoulder.
Behind him, Theron fell to one knee.
The five drakes roared.
The central brace tore free.
Mara screamed from the far side.
"KAEL, MOVE!"
Kael crawled.
Standing would take too long.
The stone beneath his hands cracked.
He pushed.
Darius reached toward him from stable ground.
Too far.
Rask grabbed Darius’s belt so he could lean farther without falling.
Kael got one foot under himself.
The bridge dropped.
Half a foot.
The ventilation cut opened wider beneath.
Heat surged upward.
Kael jumped.
Darius caught his wrist.
Rask caught Darius.
Kael slammed against the far ledge.
Pain exploded through his ribs.
He clawed at stone.
Darius pulled.
Rask pulled Darius.
Sera joined Rask.
Together they dragged Kael onto solid ground.
The bridge shifted again.
Theron remained on the opposite side.
The middle section between them cracked completely.
Kael rolled onto one knee.
"THERON!"
Vance stood.
Slowly.
The injured hip should not have allowed it.
Draconic mana forced it anyway.
The dark veins along his body glowed.
Behind him, the five drakes began moving toward the bridge.
Theron turned.
"STAY."
They stopped.
The bridge groaned.
Galahad shouted across, "COME NOW!"
Theron looked at the span.
Then at the drakes.
Then at the collapsing passage behind them.
The roof shook.
Stone fell near the largest drake.
It flinched.
Theron’s jaw tightened.
Rask stepped to the edge.
"Theron!"
Vance looked toward him.
Rask extended one hand.
Not because he could reach.
Because fifteen years of history did not know what else to do.
"Leave them."
Theron stared at the drakes.
One had already died because he forced it to hold a ceiling.
These five remained.
Tools.
Weapons.
Power.
The first things in the Caldera that obeyed him without law, rank, payment, fear of dismissal, noble permission, or Imperial recognition.
Kael saw exactly why leaving them cost him.
Theron looked toward the bridge.
Then back at his creatures.
The passage behind them cracked.
One drake recoiled.
Vance’s hand rose.
Kael expected a command to follow.
Theron said, "Stay."
Rask’s face changed.
Theron stepped onto the bridge.
The five drakes remained behind.
One growled.
Theron did not look back.
He took three steps.
The bridge shifted under his weight.
His body corrected impossibly fast.
The core had done more than strengthen him. Balance, reaction, raw physical control—everything had sharpened while the man carrying it continued to fail from within.
He reached the fracture.
The central section dropped again.
Theron jumped.
Too far for his injured body.
Not too far for what he had become.
He cleared six feet of broken deck and landed on the remaining stone.
The impact cracked it.
Kael backed up.
"Move!"
Theron ran.
Three strides.
The bridge broke behind him.
The middle span collapsed.
Stone and iron fell into the ventilation cut.
Theron jumped again.
Darius caught his forearm when he reached the far edge.
For half a second, the two men stared at each other.
Then Darius hauled him up.
The rest of the bridge collapsed.
Noise filled the passage.
Stone.
Iron.
Roaring drakes.
The five creatures disappeared behind a wall of falling debris and ash.
Theron turned immediately.
One of the drakes screamed below.
Then another.
The Dominion hit him.
Kael saw it physically.
Vance’s back arched.
His pupils narrowed pale.
He reached toward the collapse.
"COME."
The command tore out of him.
Something answered below.
Claws struck stone.
One drake appeared on the far wall of the ventilation cut.
Climbing.
Not across the broken bridge.
Up.
The second followed.
Then the largest.
Theron’s face changed.
Relief.
Power.
Possession.
Rask saw.
"No."
Vance did not look at him.
"Come."
The drakes climbed.
Loose stone rained into the ravine.
The largest creature leaped to a side shelf.
Another followed.
They were finding a path around.
Iris stared.
"They can reach the upper route."
Theron smiled.
Not widely.
Enough.
Rask grabbed his arm.
"Release them."
Vance looked down at the hand.
"Why?"
"Because they are following you out."
"That is the point."
"No."
Theron turned fully.
The dark veins brightened.
The drakes climbing below stopped.
Rask did not release him.
"Those things do not come into Blackwood."
"They will not attack Blackwood."
"You don’t know that."
"I control them."
"Until you don’t."
"I just left them behind and they crossed a ravine because I called them."
"That is exactly what I am talking about."
Theron stared.
Rask tightened his grip.
"Release them."
Vance’s face became still.
"No."
There it was.
No argument about evacuation.
No uncertainty.
No need.
Choice.
Kael stood.
Pain moved through everything.
He looked toward the wounded people farther up the passage.
They were safe from the bridge.
For the moment.
Iris had already begun moving them toward the next rise with Mara directing the route.
Good.
The evacuation did not need to stop because the men behind it had finally reached the argument waiting for them.
Galahad saw the separation too.
"Rask."
Rask looked toward him.
"Go with the wounded."
"No."
Theron’s eyes moved toward Rask.
Galahad’s tone hardened. "That was an order."
Rask looked at the people ahead.
Then back at Theron.
"My people are here too."
Theron’s expression changed.
Rask released his arm.
"But I do not know if my commander is."
The words landed harder than any challenge.
The dark veins along Theron’s throat brightened instantly.
Below them, every drake roared.
Darius moved.
Not forward.
Between Rask and Vance.
Theron looked at him.
The challenge response hit again.
His pupils narrowed.
The System opened.
[Draconic integration spike detected.]
[Muscular output increased.]
[Host tissue damage increased.]
[Dominion synchronization increased.]
[Behavioral divergence increasing.]
Kael looked toward Theron.
"Control yourself."
Vance laughed.
Low.
Rough.
Not entirely human.
"I am."
Rask shook his head.
"No."
Theron looked toward him.
Rask pointed into the ravine where the drakes were still climbing.
"You are controlling everything except yourself."
For one heartbeat, Theron looked hurt.
Then angry.
Then the Draconic Core took that anger and made it physical.
The stone under his boot cracked.
Darius raised one hand.
"Theron."
Vance’s head snapped toward him.
"Move."
Darius did not.
The two men stood less than eight feet apart.
The Empire’s Shield looked half-dead.
Theron Vance looked like something trying to become too powerful for the body containing it.
Kael felt the coming collision before either moved.
Then Mara shouted from farther up the route.
"WE HAVE ANOTHER BREAK!"
Everyone turned.
Not because the argument ended.
Because the Caldera still had priority.
A section of the upper charcoal passage had split ahead of the evacuation line.
Iris stood at the edge.
The wounded had stopped.
The route to the surface was not open yet.
Galahad looked from Theron to the trapped convoy.
Decision.
No hesitation.
"People first."
Darius lowered his sword.
Kael moved.
Rask did too.
Theron remained still.
For one moment, Kael thought he might choose the drakes.
Then Theron followed.
Good.
Still human enough for that.
They reached the new break.
The upper passage had split across its width, leaving a gap roughly nine feet wide where the floor had collapsed into a shallow volcanic channel below. Red light flickered beneath broken black stone. The fall itself was not fatal.
The heat might be.
The wounded could not jump.
Mara crouched beside the edge.
"We need a bridge."
Kael looked at the rubble.
"No wood."
"Stone."
Darius looked back toward the collapsed maintenance bridge.
Too far.
No.
Milo lifted his head weakly from where Sera had lowered him again.
"Rope."
Sera looked down.
"You are not casting."
"I said rope."
Iris understood.
She removed hers.
Mara took it.
One anchor on their side.
One on the far side.
Problem.
Nobody could get across to secure it.
Iris looked at the gap.
Then at her boots.
Brush Step.
Kael shook his head before she tried.
"You have been doing that all day."
"I am still lighter than you."
"Low standard."
She stepped back.
Wind gathered around her body.
Not a dramatic aura.
A reduction.
Weight leaving each foot.
Iris ran.
Three steps.
Jumped.
She crossed.
Barely.
Her boots struck the far edge.
Loose stone broke under one heel.
She dropped to one knee.
Caught herself.
Sera exhaled.
Iris immediately secured the rope around an old iron anchor embedded in the wall.
Mara tested.
"Good."
Not enough for litters.
Davin looked at the nearest broken slab.
"If we suspend them?"
Mara stared.
Then at the ropes.
Then the litter.
"Two lines."
Iris had one.
Rask had another coil.
They rigged both across.
Not elegant.
A guided suspension rather than a bridge.
The litter would hang between them while people on both sides pulled.
Milo watched through half-closed eyes.
His lips moved.
Sera looked down.
"What?"
"Angle is bad."
Mara heard.
"Where?"
Milo pointed weakly.
"Far line. Too high. Litter rotates."
Iris adjusted the anchor lower.
Milo nodded once.
Then his head dropped back against the wall.
No magic.
Still useful.
Good.
The first litter crossed.
The ropes groaned.
The injured man gripped the sides so hard his hands whitened.
Heat rose from below.
Rask and Davin pulled.
Iris and Eron received.
The litter reached the far side.
One.
Then the second.
The walking wounded used the rope as a hand line.
One by one.
Kael counted again.
The ventilation survivors.
Transfer survivors.
Service-pocket survivor.
Lower-gallery seven.
The wounded Vanguard fighter.
Everyone.
People they had refused to leave.
Crossing.
Finishing.
The Caldera shook.
Theron looked behind them.
The first drake appeared around the upper bend.
It had found the alternate path.
Then another.
Rask saw.
His face tightened.
Theron did not order them closer.
That was something.
He did not order them away either.
That was something else.
Mara crossed.
Veyra.
Davin.
Eron.
Sera helped Milo to the edge.
He looked down.
"Again?"
Sera smiled faintly.
"You have terrible luck with holes."
"I blame geology."
They rigged him into the empty litter.
Milo stared.
"No."
Sera tightened the strap.
"Yes."
"This is degrading."
"You passed out twice."
"Once and a half."
Rask took the rope.
They sent him across.
Milo closed his eyes.
"Wake me when dignity returns."
Sera looked toward Kael.
"Could be a while."
Kael smiled.
Milo reached the far side.
Now only fighters remained.
Good.
Galahad crossed.
Sera crossed using the hand line.
Rask stayed.
Of course.
Kael looked at him.
"Go."
Rask looked toward Theron.
"No."
Not again.
Kael almost argued.
Then stopped.
Rask had earned the decision.
Darius crossed next with the rope supporting his injured leg’s unstable steps.
He reached the far side.
Turned.
Kael prepared to follow.
Theron remained behind.
Three drakes had reached the upper passage now.
More roared farther back.
The largest approached.
Rask stepped toward Vance.
"This is the last time I ask."
Theron looked at him.
"Release them."
"No."
"Then tell me why."
Theron stared past him at the drakes.
"Because with them, nobody does this to us again."
Rask frowned.
"Does what?"
"Decides whether we get to exist."
There it was.
Not monsters.
Not evacuation.
Not Blackwood.
Everything.
Theron continued, voice growing rougher as the dark veins along his neck pulsed. "A company wants to push us off a road? They think twice. A noble wants to seize our contracts? Think twice. A governor wants to outlaw us? Think twice. An army decides we are inconvenient? They think twice."
Rask looked toward the drakes.
Then back at the man who had once given him boots after he stole Theron’s first pair.
"And everybody else?"
Theron’s eyes narrowed.
"What?"
"What do they do when you walk into town with drakes?"
Theron said nothing.
"They think twice too."
"That is not the same."
"It will feel the same to them."
Vance’s jaw tightened.
Rask’s voice softened.
"You wanted somewhere no one could make us kneel."
"Yes."
"You found something that can make everyone else kneel first."
Theron took one step forward.
The stone cracked under his boot.
The drakes raised their heads.
Rask did not move.
Kael did.
He stepped between them.
"Rask. Cross."
Rask looked at him.
"No."
"Your people are already across."
"So is yours."
Kael glanced toward Darius.
Fair.
Rask continued. "This part is mine."
Theron stared at him.
Something passed between the two men that Kael did not belong inside.
Fifteen years.
Campaigns.
Rejected people.
Food shared.
Bodies buried.
Arguments won and lost.
A company built from people nobody wanted.
Kael stepped slightly aside.
Not away.
Enough.
Rask looked at Theron.
"If you order those things into Blackwood, I am not following."
Theron went still.
The drakes did too.
Rask swallowed.
The next words cost him.
"If you force people out of your way because they tell you no, I am not following."
Theron’s face emptied.
"If you keep using that power until there is nothing left in you except whatever that core wants—"
"Enough."
Rask stopped.
Theron breathed.
Blood ran from the corner of his eye again.
"You think I do not know what I built?"
Rask’s eyes reddened.
"I think you forgot why."
The largest drake growled.
Theron turned toward it.
His hand rose.
Not to calm.
Not yet.
Rask saw.
"So choose."
Vance looked back.
"Choose what?"
"Us."
Rask pointed toward the people across the gap.
"Or that."
The drakes.
The Dominion.
The power.
Theron stared.
The Caldera trembled beneath them.
Stone cracked.
The gap widened another foot.
Galahad shouted from the far side.
"WE ARE OUT OF TIME!"
Rask did not look away.
Theron’s expression changed.
Kael could not read it anymore.
Too many things at once.
Pain.
Anger.
Grief.
Pride.
Fear.
And something older bleeding through from the core.
Territory.
Challenge.
Dominance.
The first drake stepped closer.
Theron did not command it.
Rask looked at the creature.
Then at Vance.
Theron’s eyes turned pale.
Only for a moment.
When they returned, the answer was already there.
"I choose my people."
Rask breathed.
Then Theron looked toward the drakes.
Rask’s relief died before it formed.
"And I choose the power that keeps them free."
There.
Both.
He still believed they could be the same choice.
Rask closed his eyes.
When he opened them, something had ended.
Not loyalty completely.
Maybe something worse.
Faith.
"Then I am done following you."
Theron stared at him.
The drakes growled.
The dark veins along his throat brightened.
Kael moved closer.
Darius raised his sword from the far side despite his injuries.
Galahad shifted position.
Sera reached instinctively for Mana Motes and found only a faint flicker.
The mountain groaned.
Rask stepped backward toward the gap.
Theron’s hand twitched.
One drake moved forward.
Theron stopped it.
That mattered.
"Stay."
The drake froze.
Rask looked at him one last time.
Then jumped.
He caught the hand line.
His boots struck the far edge.
Darius and Galahad pulled him up.
Theron remained alone on the near side with the drakes behind him.
Not alone.
That was the problem.
Kael stood there with him.
Rask looked across.
"Kael!"
Kael did not move yet.
Theron looked toward him.
"Why are you still here?"
"Because you have to cross too."
Vance laughed.
"You think I am coming with you?"
"Yes."
"To be arrested?"
Kael frowned.
"I did not say that."
"You did not need to."
Theron looked toward the people across the gap.
Rask.
Mara.
Davin.
Eron.
Wounded Vanguard members.
His people.
Then the drakes behind him.
His power.
The choice Rask had demanded had not disappeared simply because he refused its terms.
Kael extended one hand.
"Cross."
Theron looked at it.
For one second, the dark veins dimmed.
Then a roar rose from far below.
Not one.
Many.
The surviving drakes deeper in the Caldera answered the Dominion.
Theron’s eyes closed.
His body straightened.
Power flooded him again.
The System erupted across Kael’s vision.
[Draconic Dominion synchronization surge.]
[Host physical output rising sharply.]
[Host failure risk critical.]
[Warning: multiple draconic entities converging.]
Theron opened his eyes.
Pale points.
Longer this time.
He looked toward Kael’s hand.
Then toward the passage behind him.
"I can feel all of them."
Kael’s stomach tightened.
"Theron."
"There are dozens."
Not all close.
Not all moving.
Enough.
Vance looked almost breathless with wonder.
"They answer."
Kael stepped forward.
"Then release them."
Theron looked at him.
The pale pupils narrowed.
"No."
The Caldera shook.
A fissure opened behind the drakes.
Red light flooded the passage.
The largest creature roared.
Theron lifted his hand.
Every drake went silent.
On the far side, Darius moved.
Kael saw.
So did Theron.
Challenge.
The Dominion surged.
Kael felt the moment break.
Not because of politics.
Not because of words.
Because Theron’s body had begun treating refusal itself as something to conquer.
Kael lowered his hand.
"Then this is where we stop you."
Theron stared at him.
Behind Vance, drakes climbed through ash and red volcanic light.
Across the gap, Darius raised his sword with one functioning arm.
Galahad moved the last wounded farther up the route.
Rask stood between the people he had saved and the man he had once followed.
Sera opened her trembling hand and began gathering the few Mana Motes she could still reach.
Milo lay unconscious on the litter, finally unable to joke.
The Caldera groaned around all of them.
Theron smiled.
Not kindly.
Not completely himself.
"You can try."
