The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 324: Pressure Without Release
They climbed because staying low had become another way to die.
The northern shelf rose in broken tiers above the inner basin, each level connected by narrow seams of basalt that had never been meant for people to cross at speed. Kael reached the first rise with his burned calf pulling against every step, his ribs tightening whenever he dragged himself upward with his left arm. Behind him, Darius climbed more carefully than Kael had ever seen him move. One shoulder barely participated. His sword remained in his good hand, the blade angled down so it would not catch against the stone. Theron Vance came several paces behind them, his torn shoulder armor hanging open where the Ash-King’s teeth had caught it, while Galahad moved between the fighters and the retreating support group, looking backward often enough that Kael knew he was counting both people and distance.
The Ash-King did not chase immediately.
That was worse.
Kael reached the second ledge and turned. Through the drifting ash below, he could still see the creature’s silhouette at the center of the basin. Its chest remained expanded beyond anything Kael had seen before. Ash and soot were being drawn toward its mouth in thin streams, pulled across broken ground as if the creature were inhaling part of the battlefield itself. The remaining hollow vents along its spine had narrowed their output. Smoke no longer poured freely from them. Instead, short dark pulses escaped in irregular intervals, each one weaker than the previous.
The Ash-King was holding pressure inside.
Kael’s System did not like it.
[Internal pressure accumulation: escalating]
[Respiratory cycle duration exceeds observed baseline]
[Dorsal vent output reduced]
[Possible outcomes: high-energy discharge / internal rupture / altered attack behavior]
Confidence: low
Kael hated that last line most.
"Keep moving," he said.
Galahad looked back from the third ledge. "What did it say?"
"Pressure is still building. It does not know what happens next."
Vance climbed beside him. "Your System says it doesn’t know?"
"Yes."
"That is comforting."
"It is honest."
Theron glanced down toward the creature. "Honesty is less useful when something that size is inhaling."
Kael had no answer for that.
Above them, Iris reached the higher shelf first. She did not stop at the edge. She moved along it, testing stone with the heel of one boot before putting full weight down, then used Brush Step to lighten herself over a cracked section where the shelf narrowed around a vertical drop. Her Wind affinity did not throw her through the air. It simply took enough weight away that unstable ground received less punishment. She reached the far end and turned back, raising one hand.
"Left side holds. Right side doesn’t."
Sera followed her line. Her physical bow remained in hand, the empty quiver flat against her back. She looked exhausted. Not normal exhaustion. Something deeper sat around her eyes now, the cost of repeatedly gathering Mana Motes and forcing them into structures her body had only learned existed minutes ago. She had said maybe three good constructs remained if she kept them simple. Kael did not know whether the shot that ruptured the second vent counted as one.
Probably.
That meant two.
Maybe.
The number no longer existed in leather and wood.
That did not make it less real.
Veyra had already taken the rescued Vanguard fighter farther up the higher cut with Iris’s directions. His leg could not bear weight. She had one of his arms around her shoulders, and the man was trying hard enough not to lean fully on her that he was probably making it harder for both of them.
Galahad saw it.
"Stop pretending you can walk."
The fighter grimaced. "I am walking."
"You are hopping while injuring someone else."
Veyra said, "He is surprisingly heavy."
"I’m right here."
"I know."
The fighter glared at her.
Veyra adjusted his arm more securely around her shoulders. "That was why I said it where you could hear."
Even now.
Even here.
Kael felt the smallest flicker of humor and hated how much he needed it.
Then the Ash-King’s chest stopped expanding.
Every person on the shelf felt it.
Not saw.
Felt.
The air changed.
Iris’s head snapped toward the basin.
"DOWN!"
Everyone dropped.
The Ash-King opened its mouth.
Nothing came forward.
For one impossible heartbeat, Kael thought the pressure had failed.
Then the creature’s back exploded.
Three intact dorsal vents ruptured at once.
Not from outside attack.
From within.
Jagged black fragments shot into the air as columns of pressurized ash and pale-hot gas tore upward from the Ash-King’s spine. The force drove its body down onto its forelegs. Its mouth released at the same time, but the damaged internal system no longer directed the breath into a clean cone. The Choking Cloud erupted forward, upward, and sideways through cracks in the creature’s neck and chest.
The basin disappeared.
A gray-black dome expanded around the Ash-King.
It hit the lower shelf first.
Stone vanished inside it.
Then the pressure wave reached the northern rise.
Kael heard it coming.
A roar without a voice.
Millions of particles striking rock.
Galahad shouted, "BEHIND THE RIDGE!"
Kael crawled rather than stood. The shelf shook under him. Darius grabbed the back of his armor with his good hand and hauled him the final two feet behind a basalt spine just as the first ash wave struck.
Heat slammed over them.
The stone ridge protected their bodies from the main pressure.
It did nothing for the air.
Ash curled around both ends.
Fine soot fell from above.
Kael pressed cloth over his mouth, but the first breath still scraped his throat raw. Beside him, Darius lowered his head and covered his face with the crook of one arm.
The second pressure wave hit.
This one came from below.
Ash had entered the lower cracks in the shelf and surged upward through them.
The ground beneath Kael’s knees erupted.
He rolled away as a jet of superheated soot burst from a fissure where his leg had been.
His burned calf struck stone.
Pain blinded him for half a second.
Darius caught his collar.
"Move."
Kael moved.
The shelf became a field of random vents.
One burst near Vance.
Theron jumped sideways, but the edge caught his torn shoulder armor. The remaining leather blackened instantly. He hit the ground and tore the ruined piece off before the heat reached deeper flesh.
Another plume erupted between Galahad and Sera.
Sera fell backward.
Her bow almost left her hand.
Almost.
She caught it by the lower limb, rolled, and used the weapon like a staff to regain her feet.
Iris shouted from higher ground.
"UP! The cracks are venting upward!"
Galahad changed direction immediately.
Everyone climbed.
The Ash-King was not attacking them directly anymore.
Its failing body was turning the Caldera into the attack.
Kael reached the next tier and looked back.
The sight below would have been beautiful if it were not trying to kill them.
The Ash-King stood inside a storm of its own making. Gray columns blasted from the broken vents along its back. Pale light pulsed through the cracks in its throat and chest. Soot poured from its mouth every time the pressure escaped unevenly. The creature’s black hide had begun to split farther around the damaged dorsal structures, glowing faintly beneath the cracks like stone heated from inside a forge.
And it was still alive.
Still upright.
Still watching.
One of its black eyes turned toward the northern shelf.
The white pupil found them.
Then the Ash-King moved.
Galahad saw it first. "IT’S COMING."
Theron looked down. "It cannot climb that with the rear leg."
Darius turned toward him.
Vance corrected himself before Darius needed to speak.
"It shouldn’t."
Better.
The Ash-King reached the base of the northern rise.
Its right rear leg dragged almost uselessly.
It did not matter.
The creature drove both foreclaws into the vertical basalt wall and pulled.
One foreleg.
Then the other.
Its good rear leg pushed.
The right wing opened as a counterbalance.
The damaged left wing scraped stone.
The Ash-King climbed.
Kael stared.
"That thing refuses to understand anatomy."
Darius breathed hard beside him. "So should you."
Kael looked over.
Darius pointed upward with his sword.
Right.
Move.
They climbed again.
The northern shelf narrowed into a broken staircase of volcanic stone, forcing everyone into a line. Iris reached the next landing and immediately looked over the edge.
"Too narrow."
Galahad climbed beside her. "For it?"
"For us."
The route ahead split around a basalt tower.
The left path climbed but narrowed to a ledge barely shoulder-width.
The right dropped slightly through an old drainage cut filled with ash.
Galahad looked toward Kael.
"System."
Kael scanned.
[Left route: structural integrity moderate]
[Right route: ash depth variable / gas accumulation probable]
[Recommendation: left route preferred for breathable retreat]
"Left."
Iris was already moving.
Good.
Veyra and the injured Vanguard fighter went first now, because slowest moved while time still existed. Sera followed. Galahad stayed in the middle. Kael, Darius, and Vance brought up the rear.
The Ash-King reached the first ledge below them.
Stone broke under its weight.
The creature slipped.
Its injured rear quarter dropped.
For a moment, half its body hung against the cliff.
Kael stopped.
Vance stopped beside him.
A perfect opening.
Too perfect.
Theron raised his weapon.
Galahad looked back.
"No."
Vance stared at him.
"It’s hanging."
"And we are standing on the same structure."
The Ash-King’s foreclaws dug deeper into stone.
Cracks spread through the ledge.
Kael saw the chain.
If they attacked.
If it thrashed.
If the ledge failed.
Everything above might go with it.
Theron lowered the weapon.
Again.
He listened.
The Ash-King hauled itself upward.
The chance disappeared.
Galahad turned away first.
"Good."
Vance’s expression hardened. "Do not congratulate me for not being stupid."
"I wasn’t."
"What were you doing?"
"Congratulating myself."
Milo would have liked that one.
They reached the left path.
It was worse than it looked.
The ledge wrapped around the basalt tower with a drop on one side and a sheer wall on the other. Sera moved sideways rather than forward, one hand against the wall, bow trapped beneath her opposite arm. Ash coated the stone, making every step uncertain.
Iris crossed first.
Then Veyra and the wounded fighter.
The man slipped halfway.
Veyra caught him.
Her back hit the wall.
His injured leg dropped over the edge.
He screamed.
Iris turned immediately and used Wind not to lift him but to lighten enough of his weight that Veyra could pull without being dragged over too.
Galahad joined.
Three people got him back.
No heroics.
No clean save.
His wound reopened.
Blood ran down the ledge.
Kael saw it.
So did the Ash-King.
The creature’s head rose from the level below.
Its nostrils flared.
It smelled blood.
Vance swore.
"Move him."
They did.
Sera reached the far side of the ledge and turned.
The Ash-King could not fit onto the narrow path.
That should have mattered.
Instead it hooked one foreclaw into the cliff below and leaned its head around the basalt tower.
Its jaw opened.
Sera saw the chest glow.
"No."
The pale light inside the neck was already bright.
The creature had climbed while still accumulating pressure.
Galahad shouted, "NO COVER!"
There was none.
The ledge offered no ridge.
No wall thick enough.
No space to scatter.
The Ash-King drew breath.
Sera’s hand opened.
Mana Motes appeared.
Too slowly.
She knew.
Everyone knew.
A Construct Arrow formed anyway.
Point.
Shaft.
Balance.
Her fingers trembled.
The shape stabilized.
She nocked.
The Ash-King’s mouth opened wider.
Sera drew.
Kael saw the shot she wanted.
Throat.
The old solution.
But the neck was turned around stone. The angle left only the lower jaw and one side of the glowing throat exposed.
Sera did not release.
Galahad looked at her.
"Sera!"
"I don’t have it."
Good.
Better than wasting the shot.
Kael looked at the cliff.
Ice would fail under sustained heat.
Maybe it did not need to last.
He drove his sword into a crack near the edge.
"Ice Wedge!"
Cold erupted into the stone.
Not outward.
Inward.
The wedge widened the crack.
Basalt groaned.
Darius understood.
He moved next to Kael and struck the same fracture with Aura.
The ledge beneath the Ash-King’s gripping foreclaw split.
Vance hit it too.
The entire section broke away.
The Ash-King’s head dropped.
Its grip failed.
The creature slid six feet down the cliff.
The breath discharged.
Ash blasted upward beneath the ledge instead of across it.
The heat still reached them.
The pressure did not.
"MOVE!" Galahad shouted.
Everyone moved.
Kael pulled his sword free.
The Ice Wedge melted almost instantly behind them.
The Ash-King recovered below.
Angrier.
Alive.
Sera released her Construct Arrow before it dissolved.
Not at the creature.
At the basalt directly above its climbing foreclaw.
Kael looked at her.
The arrow struck.
It shattered.
Almost nothing happened.
Sera’s face tightened.
"Too soft."
Then a crack appeared.
Small.
Not enough.
Darius reached the far side of the ledge and looked back.
"You were trying to break the grip point."
"Yes."
"Good idea."
"Bad arrow."
"Then fix the arrow."
Sera looked at him.
Darius moved on.
Simple.
Infuriating.
Useful.
Sera followed.
They reached the northern shelf proper less than a minute later.
The plateau was wider than the climbing route, but damaged by old geothermal fractures. Three basalt pillars broke the open space, and a shallow depression near the western edge held several inches of accumulated ash.
Galahad immediately rejected the depression.
"High ground only."
Iris checked the eastern side. "Retreat path behind the second pillar. Narrow but open."
Veyra and the injured fighter reached it.
Galahad pointed. "Take him back toward the hold."
Veyra stared. "Alone?"
"You have no focus."
"I still have hands."
"Yes. Use them where they matter."
The insult she expected never came.
Veyra looked toward the Ash-King below.
Then nodded.
She and the Vanguard fighter continued toward the rear path.
That reduced the active fight group again.
Kael.
Darius.
Galahad.
Iris.
Sera.
Vance.
Six.
The Ash-King climbed onto the northern plateau.
Not elegantly.
It dragged itself over the last ledge, ruined rear leg scraping stone. The damaged wing caught on a basalt spur and tore farther before slipping free. Black blood smeared the cliff behind it.
A normal creature would have stopped.
The Ash-King did not.
Its front claws reached the plateau.
Its head rose.
Its chest glow remained pale.
Soot leaked from its broken vents.
Then it pulled the rest of its body onto the shelf.
Six injured people stood against something that had survived more damage than Kael believed possible.
Galahad looked at everyone.
"New rule."
Vance kept his eyes on the creature. "What?"
"We stop thinking the wounds we caused will save us."
Nobody argued.
The Ash-King charged.
The plateau gave it more room than the ledge.
Its damaged rear leg dragged.
The good one drove.
Its right wing spread for balance.
The body came low.
Darius stepped forward.
Galahad grabbed his armor.
"No."
Darius looked back.
"Not first."
For once, Darius accepted being protected.
Vance took the center instead.
Kael moved left.
Iris disappeared right.
Sera climbed the first basalt pillar enough to create a firing line without committing to a fixed perch.
The Ash-King went for Vance.
Theron waited longer than Kael liked.
Ten yards.
Six.
Four.
Then he moved.
Not sideways.
Forward.
Kael’s heart jumped.
Vance ducked under the descending jaw and struck the creature’s already damaged side as he passed. His bent weapon entered the open wound just enough to reopen it.
Black blood spilled.
The Ash-King’s foreleg came down.
Theron rolled.
Barely.
The claw clipped his boot.
He spun.
Hit the ground.
Kael attacked the opposite side with Frostbite Edge.
The Ash-King expected it.
Its body twisted before he reached the wound.
The tail swept.
Kael stopped his charge instead of committing.
Preserve decisions.
Darius’s lesson.
The tail passed in front of him.
Kael remained standing.
For once.
He attacked after it passed.
His blade struck the base of an intact dorsal vent.
He did not break it.
That mattered.
He cut the surrounding scale instead.
Cold entered the crack.
The Ash-King screamed and twisted.
Kael withdrew.
Darius stepped into the opening.
One-handed.
His sword struck the same chilled scale.
Not enough to shatter it.
Enough to deepen the fracture.
The vent remained functional.
But the surrounding armor weakened.
Good.
Maybe they did not need to destroy the vents.
Maybe they needed access beneath them.
Sera saw the same thing.
Mana Motes gathered around her hand.
Her breathing changed.
Slower.
More deliberate.
She formed a Construct Arrow.
Then stopped before nocking it.
The point was ordinary.
Too broad.
She stared at it.
Darius had said fix the arrow.
Sera thought about the failed shot against the cliff.
Too soft.
The Ash-King’s scales had defeated ordinary arrows repeatedly.
The rare Structure Affinity she had awakened was not simply giving her ammunition. It allowed her to determine what that ammunition became, changing density, shape, hardness, edge, and eventually more specialized properties. Everything and character you ne...
Sera compressed the point.
The construct resisted.
Her fingers shook.
Mana Motes broke away.
She stopped.
Breathed.
Tried again.
Not the whole arrow.
Only the front.
Narrow.
Dense.
Hard.
The point lengthened.
The shaft behind it dimmed.
Too much mana going forward.
Sera adjusted balance.
The arrow stabilized.
Her face went pale.
One modified shot.
Probably all she had promised.
The Ash-King turned toward Kael.
Sera raised the bow.
No angle.
She waited.
Vance came from behind the creature’s shoulder and drove his weapon into the reopened side wound.
The Ash-King snapped toward him.
That exposed the vent Kael and Darius had damaged without destroying.
Sera saw the crack beneath it.
Not the vent.
The scale under the vent.
She drew.
Ash crossed from left to right.
She compensated.
Then the current changed.
Sera held.
Another second.
The Ash-King moved.
The angle narrowed.
She released.
The Construct Arrow flew.
Kael saw the difference immediately.
This one did not flicker.
Not much.
The front of the projectile remained a tight pale line.
It struck the chilled fracture beneath the dorsal vent.
The point penetrated.
Not deep.
Enough.
The construct shattered inside the crack.
The scale split.
A section the size of Kael’s hand broke away.
Dark tissue beneath.
Not glowing.
Living.
The Ash-King screamed.
Sera nearly collapsed.
She caught herself against the basalt pillar.
No triumph.
No announcement.
Her first crude Piercing refinement had worked.
Barely.
The Ash-King answered with violence.
Its right wing swept.
Not flight.
A horizontal strike.
The membrane caught Darius and Galahad before either could fully clear it.
Darius turned with the impact.
Galahad did not.
Both men hit stone.
Darius rolled.
Galahad struck the base of the second pillar.
His head snapped back.
He did not move.
Kael’s stomach dropped.
"GALAHAD!"
Iris reached him first.
The Ash-King followed the downed target.
Of course it did.
It had learned.
Iris drew her short bow while running.
No Mana Weaving.
No magical arrow.
One wooden shaft remained in her own quiver.
She used it.
Quick Nock.
No full draw.
The arrow struck the Ash-King’s nostril.
Not deep enough to wound seriously.
Enough to make its head jerk.
Iris dropped the bow and drew both field knives before the creature’s claw came down.
She did not try to block.
She used Brush Step and moved backward with the lightened speed her Wind affinity gave her.
The claw hit stone.
Iris landed.
One foot slipped in ash.
The second claw came.
Too fast.
Darius appeared.
Again.
Always.
His sword crossed the wrist.
Aura redirected just enough.
The claw struck beside Iris.
Darius’s shoulder gave.
Kael saw it.
Not injured.
Gave.
His arm dropped.
The sword nearly left his hand.
He caught it with the other before it fell.
Darius had become a one-handed swordsman by necessity.
And the Ash-King noticed.
Its head turned.
Darius stepped back.
The creature stepped forward.
Vance attacked its damaged side.
No reaction.
Kael used Ice Needle.
Five narrow spikes struck the opened scale beneath the vent.
Most broke.
Two entered flesh.
The Ash-King flinched.
That mattered.
Darius escaped one step.
The Ash-King lunged again.
Kael used Frost Burst against the ground between them.
Cold exploded upward in a wave of ice fragments and frozen ash.
No damage.
Visibility.
The Ash-King closed its eyes instinctively.
Darius moved again.
Two steps.
Safe.
The creature shook frost from its face.
Iris reached Galahad.
She touched his neck.
Pulse.
Good.
She dragged him by the armor toward the rear of the pillar.
Sera climbed down to help.
Galahad’s eyes opened halfway.
"What?"
Iris looked at him. "You lost an argument with a wing."
He tried to sit.
She pushed him down.
"Stay."
Galahad blinked.
Then remembered where they were.
"No."
Of course.
He got one knee under himself.
Sera grabbed his arm.
"You’re dizzy."
"Yes."
"That means stay."
"That means speak louder."
Sera stared.
He managed a thin smile.
Then winced.
Still Galahad.
Still working.
The Ash-King turned its head.
Chest glow brightened again.
Kael saw it.
"BREATH!"
Everyone changed immediately.
No fixed positions.
No assumption about direction.
The remaining vents pulsed.
One broken vent leaked sideways.
The opened scale beneath another released dark smoke around Sera’s embedded wound.
The Ash-King inhaled.
Sera tried to gather another Construct Arrow.
Nothing happened.
Her hand shook.
One Mana Mote.
Then two.
Gone.
She had spent too much on the Piercing refinement.
No shot.
She knew.
Kael knew.
Good.
She did not pretend.
"I’M OUT!"
Not permanently.
For now.
Important distinction.
Vance looked toward her.
Then Darius.
Then Kael.
"No throat shot."
Kael’s mind raced.
Crescent Blizzard again?
Unsafe.
Probably possible.
No.
Galahad had allowed one.
Kael had used one.
The Caldera had already punished him for it.
Not unless death was certain.
The Ash-King’s glow turned white.
Darius looked at the terrain.
Not creature.
Terrain.
He pointed toward the first basalt pillar.
"Behind it."
Vance frowned. "Too narrow for all of us."
"Not all."
Darius pointed again.
"Split."
Of course.
One blast.
Multiple covers.
Galahad understood through the dizziness.
"Kael, Iris, first pillar. Vance, Sera, second. Darius with me."
Kael opened his mouth.
Darius looked at him.
"No."
Fine.
They split.
The Ash-King exhaled.
This time the pressure release stayed mostly forward.
Mostly.
The main Choking Cloud hit between the pillars.
Ash rolled around both sides.
Kael pressed himself against stone with Iris beside him.
The heat came first.
Then the grit.
Then the gas.
His eyes burned.
Iris pulled cloth tighter over her nose.
The cloud curled.
Kael watched the ash.
Milo would have seen more.
But Milo had taught them to look.
The current moved around the pillar and began folding back.
"Other side."
Iris nodded.
They switched before the toxic portion pooled.
Across the battlefield, Vance did the same with Sera.
Good.
Learning.
The Ash-King’s breath weakened.
Then changed.
Pressure coughed through the opened scale beneath the damaged vent.
A side jet erupted directly toward Vance’s pillar.
Theron saw too late.
Sera saw first.
She shoved him.
Both fell.
The jet struck the edge of the pillar and shattered stone.
A chunk hit Sera across the back.
She went down.
Vance rolled over her instinctively, covering her from the falling fragments.
Kael saw.
Could not reach.
The ash breath ended.
"SER—"
Sera moved.
Good.
Theron got off her.
She coughed hard.
Her bow remained beneath one arm.
Of course.
Vance looked at her back.
"Bleeding."
"Can I move?"
"Yes."
"Then later."
Theron stared at her.
Then laughed once.
"That is my line."
"Bad line."
Fair.
The Ash-King lowered its head.
Its breathing became ragged.
Uneven.
The pressure cycle had hurt it.
Kael could see the chest contractions now.
Could hear them.
Dry.
Deep.
Each inhale pulled ash toward its mouth.
Each exhale leaked smoke from too many places.
The creature staggered one step.
Vance saw.
"So do I."
Kael looked at him.
"What?"
"The opened scale."
Theron pointed with the bent weapon.
Under the damaged dorsal vent, where Sera’s Piercing Construct had broken the outer armor, dark flesh moved with each breath.
Darius looked.
His eyes sharpened.
"Rib line."
Kael understood.
The scales were armor.
The vent structures sat over thinner protection.
If they could open enough of that line without destroying every vent—
Galahad pushed himself upright against the pillar.
"Do not turn one observation into certainty."
Everyone looked at him.
Good.
Still leading.
Kael opened the System.
[Localized armor breach detected]
[Underlying tissue exposure confirmed]
[Depth to critical structure: unresolved]
[Respiratory motion correlation: high]
"System confirms exposed tissue. It does not know what is underneath."
Vance smiled grimly.
"That is enough."
Galahad shook his head.
"It is enough to test."
Better.
The Ash-King recovered.
Of course it did.
It lowered its body.
Not toward them.
Toward the open shelf.
Then it drove both foreclaws into the stone.
Darius’s face changed.
"Move."
Kael did not understand.
The Ash-King pulled.
The entire cracked plate beneath the first pillar shifted.
Not broke.
Shifted.
The creature was using the terrain.
The basalt slab tilted toward the edge.
Iris jumped clear.
Kael followed.
The first pillar leaned.
Galahad shouted.
The Ash-King pulled again.
The pillar fell.
Not onto the creature.
Across the retreat path.
Tons of basalt crashed into the northern cut behind them.
Their clean retreat disappeared beneath stone.
Everyone froze.
The Ash-King lifted its head.
The tiny white pupils stared at them.
Kael felt something colder than Ice move through his stomach.
It had not attacked their bodies.
It had attacked the way out.
Theron stared at the collapsed retreat path.
"It did that on purpose."
Nobody contradicted him.
The Ash-King took one step toward them.
Then another.
Its ruined leg dragged.
Its broken wing hung.
Its back leaked smoke.
Its chest glowed through widening cracks.
It was dying.
Maybe.
Eventually.
Not fast enough.
And now it had removed their safest route out.
Galahad wiped blood from his temple and looked around the shelf.
"New plan."
Vance almost laughed.
"You have one?"
"No."
Galahad drew his weapon.
"I have a rule."
Kael waited.
"We do not stay where it wants us."
The Ash-King charged.
This time nobody retreated toward the blocked path.
They moved toward the creature.
Not to kill it in one rush.
To take back control of the battlefield before it removed every other choice.
Darius led with one functioning arm.
Vance came from the right.
Kael from the left.
Iris circled wider.
Sera remained behind them, empty-handed except for her bow and too depleted to form another arrow yet.
Galahad stayed just behind the frontline despite the blood running down the side of his head.
The Ash-King opened its jaws.
Kael saw the pressure building.
Saw the broken vents.
Saw the exposed tissue beneath Sera’s cracked scale.
Not the kill.
The next decision.
He Rime-Stepped left.
The Ash-King followed.
Exactly what Kael wanted.
Darius took the line.
Vance struck the side.
Iris moved toward the exposed rear leg.
Galahad called distances.
And Sera, with no physical arrows and not enough mana for another Construct yet, watched all of them fight while forcing herself to breathe slowly enough that the Mana Motes around the battlefield would stop slipping away every time fear tightened her hand.
The fight had entered another phase.
Not because the Ash-King had become weak.
Because both sides had started learning how the other thought.
