The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 292: The Hollow Crossing
The lower stairway twisted beneath the worked chamber in tight black turns.
The armed guide moved first, carrying a short lantern low near the ground instead of at shoulder height. Kael noticed that immediately. The light was not for seeing farther ahead. It was for watching the floor.
Every few steps, the man stopped and tapped the stone with the heel of his boot before shifting his weight.
Iris copied him.
Not exactly.
She watched which stones he avoided, then checked the walls and ceiling for additional signs he was not showing them.
Galahad noticed too.
"Why the floor?"
The guide did not turn.
"Hollow channels underneath."
Milo looked down.
"Wonderful."
The guide continued.
"Some are old lava tubes. Some collapsed years ago. Some only look solid."
Milo glanced toward Kael.
"I miss roads."
Kael almost smiled. "You complained about those too."
"Yes, but roads rarely breathe fire."
"Usually."
Milo looked at him.
"That word was unnecessary."
Behind them, Darius helped carry the rear of Derren’s litter. The healer stayed beside it, one hand braced over the fresh wrapping on Derren’s thigh whenever the stairs became too steep.
Derren had gone quiet again.
Not unconscious.
Saving strength.
The System appeared at the edge of Kael’s sight.
[Structural Analysis]
Subsurface voids detected
Depth variance: 2–11 feet
Surface stability: inconsistent
Recommendation: follow low-vibration path
Kael looked ahead.
The System marked nothing visible on the floor itself.
No glowing safe line.
No perfect answer.
Just information.
Good.
"Iris."
She glanced back.
"Some of the hollows are deeper than others. Avoid heavy impact."
She nodded.
The armed guide looked over his shoulder.
"You can tell?"
Kael ignored the question.
Milo did not.
"He has developed a deeply irritating relationship with danger."
Kael looked at him.
"You benefit from it."
"I can benefit and complain simultaneously."
The stairway finally ended.
Ahead stretched a broad natural corridor split by a long crack running through the center.
The orange glow below was faint here, more ember than flame.
A narrow shelf hugged the right wall.
The armed guide pointed.
"One at a time around the outside."
Galahad studied the path.
"How long?"
"Three hundred paces, maybe less."
"Maybe?"
"The ground changes."
Milo sighed.
"I would like one person in this place to speak confidently."
The guide looked at him.
"Fine. If you step wrong, you will fall."
Milo nodded.
"Thank you. Much better."
Sera laughed quietly.
They moved.
Iris first.
Then the guide.
Then the front of Derren’s litter.
The shelf was barely wide enough for two people in places, which meant the litter had to be turned almost sideways.
The healer cursed under her breath.
Derren opened one eye.
"You enjoying this?"
"No."
"Good."
Milo looked down at him.
"Excellent recovery. Sarcasm is returning."
The healer shot Milo a look.
He raised both hands.
"Encouragement."
The System flickered again.
[Thermal pressure fluctuation]
Localized venting likely
Kael stopped.
"Hold."
Everyone stopped.
The guide frowned.
"What?"
Kael listened.
At first, nothing.
Then a faint hiss from the wall ahead.
The System sharpened.
[Vent point detected: 18 paces ahead, left wall]
Kael pointed.
"Stay right around the next bend."
The guide stared.
"Why?"
"Vent."
He looked skeptical.
Then steam burst from a crack in the left wall.
Not enough to fill the passage.
Enough to scorch anything standing directly beside it.
The guide’s expression changed.
Milo leaned toward him.
"He does that."
The guide looked at Kael again.
"What are you?"
Kael answered without hesitation.
"Tired."
Milo laughed.
Actually laughed.
"That was good."
Kael smiled.
"Learned from you."
"Dangerous habit."
They passed the vent.
The shelf widened enough for Darius to shift his grip on the litter.
Kael looked back.
Darius’s breathing was controlled, but Kael could see the tension in the commander’s left side every time he stepped up onto higher stone.
The brood guard had hurt him.
The Ash-King had hurt everyone.
That mattered.
No one here was invulnerable.
Then Sera stopped.
She stood near the rear of the group, bow already in hand.
"Movement."
The guide turned.
"Where?"
"Above."
Everyone looked up.
The ceiling rose unevenly into darkness.
No glow.
No sound.
Then one pebble dropped.
Darius lowered the litter carefully.
"Set him down."
The route worker at the front obeyed.
The healer immediately crouched over Derren.
Sera drew.
The System reacted.
[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]
Small heat sources above and behind
Count: 6
Kael looked up.
"Six."
Milo stared at the ceiling.
"I hate that number less than thirty."
"Still drakes."
"I hate it again."
The first juvenile dropped.
Sera fired.
The arrow caught it mid-fall through the throat.
Its body struck the shelf and nearly rolled over the edge.
The second landed behind Darius.
Darius turned and hit it with the flat pressure of Aura rather than a killing strike.
The drake slammed sideways into the wall.
Galahad finished it.
Three more scrambled down the rock face.
The sixth stayed above.
Watching.
Iris saw it.
"Last one isn’t coming."
Galahad glanced up.
"Why?"
Iris narrowed her eyes.
"Waiting."
Milo frowned.
"That is worse."
The other three attacked together.
The shelf was too narrow for Darius to fully maneuver.
So the party changed around him.
Sera stepped farther back and took the high target.
Iris dropped low and attacked legs.
Galahad held center.
Kael used Ice only where the footing allowed it.
Milo stood near Derren.
Not because he had been told to.
Because that was where he was most useful.
The first juvenile lunged.
Iris cut the front tendon.
It stumbled.
Galahad struck behind the jaw.
The second beat its wings once.
The gust almost pushed the healer toward the edge.
Milo reacted instantly.
Mana wrapped around her waist.
Not enough to lift.
Enough to yank her backward.
She landed hard beside Derren.
Milo pointed at the drake.
"That was rude."
He released the spell.
The same force that had pulled the healer back struck the juvenile’s wing joint from the opposite direction.
The wing folded badly.
Sera’s arrow entered the exposed seam.
The creature dropped.
The third juvenile tried climbing along the wall.
Kael’s System flashed.
[Footing instability: wall shelf above target]
Kael looked up.
Loose stone.
"Darius."
The commander followed Kael’s gaze.
One projected Aura strike hit the shelf above the drake.
Rock collapsed.
The juvenile disappeared beneath it.
The sixth drake finally moved.
Not toward them.
Away.
Iris watched it crawl back into the ceiling break.
"Scout."
Galahad did not need to say more.
She tracked the movement until it vanished.
"It’s going deeper."
The armed guide looked unsettled.
"Juveniles don’t usually leave the hatchery tunnels this far down."
Galahad looked at him.
"Usually?"
The man realized what he had said.
Milo smiled faintly.
"Oh, now we get details."
The guide ignored him.
Kael looked toward the dark ceiling passage.
The System gave nothing more.
No reason.
No explanation.
Just six heat sources reduced to one retreating.
They moved again.
The shelf ended at an old stone archway.
Beyond it sat a wider chamber.
No lanterns.
No active work.
Only broken crates and abandoned tools.
Iris entered first.
Then stopped.
Galahad saw her posture.
"What?"
She did not answer immediately.
Kael moved closer.
The smell reached him before the sight did.
Old blood.
Not fresh.
Not recent enough to be metallic.
Something dried into stone.
The chamber was small.
Too small for comfort.
One wall held three broken racks.
The floor had drag marks.
Not many.
Enough.
The System opened.
[Evidence Scan]
Old biological residue detected
Age estimate: broad / unreliable
Human-compatible traces present
Multiple disturbances
No current living heat signatures
Kael’s stomach tightened.
Iris crouched near the far wall.
Something lay beneath a collapsed wooden frame.
Cloth.
Leather.
A hand.
The healer looked away immediately.
Derren did not.
He stared from the litter.
Galahad stepped forward slowly.
No one spoke.
Iris moved the broken frame aside.
The body had been there for some time.
Long enough that the face was difficult to recognize.
Clothing remained.
Part of a cloak.
One boot.
The other foot bare.
Brass buckle.
The same style.
Derren made a sound.
Not a word.
Just breath catching.
Galahad looked toward him.
"Derren."
Derren stared at the body.
His face changed.
He knew.
Maybe not from the face.
From something else.
The cloak.
The build.
The remaining boot.
His mouth tightened.
"That’s him."
The healer looked at Derren.
"Certain?"
He did not answer immediately.
Then:
"He had that tear."
Galahad looked toward the cloak.
A triangular rip had been crudely stitched near the lower edge.
Derren swallowed.
"Rellan tore it last winter. Said he’d replace it. Never did."
Silence.
Kael’s System updated.
[Evidence Update]
Possible identification: Rellan Dorr
Supporting evidence:
Witness recognition of repaired cloak tear
Matching boot style
Known belongings previously recovered farther east
Confidence: high
Not absolute.
High.
That was enough for the Guild to take seriously.
Galahad crouched beside the body.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Rellan had been one of the Guild’s first D-rank adventurers.
One of the people who had taken the Guild seriously enough to keep climbing.
Kael remembered the board.
The missing notice.
The discussions.
The choice to escalate.
Now the person at the center of all of it was lying beneath broken wood in a volcanic chamber far beyond where his original mission should ever have taken him.
Galahad removed one glove.
Then closed the dead man’s eyes.
Even though they were already barely open.
"We take his badge home."
Iris looked at him.
"The badge was found at the kiln."
Galahad nodded.
"Then we take him home if we can."
The healer looked toward the route ahead.
"With Derren?"
Galahad’s expression tightened.
That was the problem.
Derren needed the litter.
The chamber ahead was unstable.
They had no second carrying team.
Darius looked toward the body.
"We can mark the location."
Galahad said nothing.
Darius continued.
"Return after extraction."
Galahad’s jaw worked once.
He hated it.
Kael could tell.
But this was command.
Not sentiment.
Finally:
"Mark everything."
Iris nodded.
She took out chalk and marked the wall.
Not the white route mark.
A Guild retrieval symbol.
Simple.
Distinct.
Then she recorded the chamber’s turns and distance from the last archway.
Kael watched.
The System quietly saved the direction too.
[Recovery location recorded]
Useful.
No fanfare.
No reward.
Just helping them come back for someone they could not carry yet.
Derren stared at Rellan.
The healer touched his shoulder.
"We need to move."
Derren looked at her.
"He should’ve been with us."
No one answered.
Because he should have.
Galahad stood.
"We are bringing him back."
Derren nodded once.
It was not enough.
It was all they had.
They left the chamber.
Milo was quiet for several minutes after that.
No jokes.
No complaints.
Kael did not try to force one.
The lower crossing continued ahead through black stone, and the silence felt appropriate.
Eventually, though, the air changed again.
More heat.
Ash drifting through cracks above.
A low vibration beneath their boots.
Milo wiped his face.
Dark dust smeared across his cheek.
He looked miserable.
Then he sighed.
"You know who I miss?"
Kael looked over.
"Who?"
"Walter."
Kael blinked.
"Walter?"
"Yes."
Milo stepped over a fracture and continued.
"I would rather sit in Blackwood and listen to Walter talk my head off for six hours."
Kael stared at him.
Milo was completely serious.
"Every story."
Another step.
"Every joke."
A low tremor rolled through the corridor.
Milo pointed downward.
"He can repeat the same joke four times. I won’t complain."
Kael laughed.
He could not help it.
Milo looked at him.
"I mean it."
"I know."
"I would even laugh the fourth time."
Kael nodded solemnly.
"So would I."
Milo stopped walking.
"You agree?"
"Yes."
Milo stared.
Then looked toward the glowing crack beneath the wall.
"That’s how I know this place has broken you."
Kael laughed again.
Even Derren made a weak sound from the litter that might have been amusement.
Sera smiled.
Iris looked back once.
"Are you finished?"
Milo shook his head.
"No. I have several more things I now appreciate about Blackwood."
Galahad called from ahead.
"Keep them to yourself."
Milo looked wounded.
"Leadership continues to suppress morale."
The moment lasted perhaps twenty seconds.
That was enough.
Then the corridor opened.
The humor disappeared.
Ahead lay the lower crossing.
It was not a bridge.
It was a series of broad black stone platforms separated by narrow channels glowing red-orange beneath the surface.
Some channels were only a few feet wide.
Others stretched ten or fifteen.
Old iron plates had once covered several gaps.
Most were warped.
One had melted enough to sag in the middle.
The armed guide stopped.
"There."
Galahad stared.
"That is the crossing?"
"Yes."
Milo looked at Kael.
"I take back everything. Walter is now my favorite person."
Kael smiled faintly.
The System appeared.
[Environmental Analysis]
Multiple geothermal fractures
Heat intensity: severe
Surface stability: declining
Gas concentrations: variable
Recommended route requires active adjustment
Iris looked toward Kael.
"You seeing something?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Galahad pointed.
"Scout and Prince together."
They moved to the front.
This was where both were strongest.
Kael saw heat patterns.
Iris saw terrain.
Neither alone was enough.
The first platform held.
The second had cracks near the left edge.
Iris tested the right.
Kael checked the System.
[Right edge stable]
"Right."
She nodded.
They moved.
Behind them, Darius and the route workers carefully carried Derren.
Milo stayed near the healer.
Sera watched above.
Galahad watched everyone.
The third platform shook beneath Iris.
She froze.
Kael’s System flashed.
[Subsurface cavity expanding]
"Back."
She stepped back instantly.
A section of stone ahead collapsed.
Not dramatically.
It simply dropped away.
Orange light surged upward from below.
Milo stared.
"I miss Walter."
Sera groaned.
"You said that already."
"I have not stopped."
Galahad looked around.
"Alternative."
Kael scanned.
[Possible route: 14 paces north / elevated shelf]
Kael pointed.
"Up there."
Iris looked.
A narrow rise along the wall.
"Can we get the litter up?"
Darius answered.
"Yes."
The guide shook his head.
"That shelf ends."
Kael looked at the System.
[Line-of-sight incomplete]
Not enough information.
Iris climbed up alone.
She disappeared around the bend.
Several seconds passed.
Then:
"It continues!"
The guide frowned.
"I thought—"
Iris reappeared.
"Collapsed wall opened another path."
Interesting.
The terrain was changing faster than local knowledge could keep up.
Galahad nodded.
"Use it."
They climbed.
The shelf was steep.
Darius took more of Derren’s weight.
Milo put one hand beneath the litter and used a small levitation spell to reduce the load without fully lifting it.
His mana flickered unevenly.
Sera saw it.
"Stop before you empty yourself."
"I am already mostly empty."
"That is what you said earlier."
"Yes. I have discovered unfortunate additional percentages."
Kael shook his head.
They reached the upper shelf.
Then the System flashed hard.
[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]
Large movement detected below
Everyone stopped.
Kael looked down.
Nothing.
Only glowing channels.
Then something moved beneath one of the platforms.
Stone lifted.
Not much.
Enough.
Iris whispered.
"Drake."
The guide shook his head.
"Too large."
The platform broke.
A massive head erupted through black stone.
Not the Ash-King.
Not the hatch-mother.
Another mature drake.
Its scales were gray-black, thicker along the snout, and one horn had broken near the base.
It climbed upward directly into the crossing.
The heat channels around it flared.
Galahad immediately shouted.
"Litter back! Commander front!"
Darius lowered Derren carefully and moved.
Sera drew.
Milo straightened despite exhaustion.
Iris looked for another route.
Kael’s System opened.
[Threat Analysis]
Mature drake specimen
Thermal resistance: high
Current environment favors target
Warning: heavy combat may destabilize surrounding platforms
Of course.
Darius raised his sword.
The drake roared.
Aura Pressure rolled outward.
The creature hesitated.
Not much.
Enough.
Milo felt it too.
His expression changed again.
He looked toward Kael.
"There."
Kael nodded.
Darius did not explain.
He simply advanced.
The drake lunged.
Darius met it.
Sword against claw.
The impact cracked the shelf.
Kael’s System flashed.
[Structural strain increasing]
"Commander! Keep it away from the center!"
Darius shifted immediately.
He struck the left side of the drake’s head and forced it toward the outer edge.
Sera fired.
The arrow struck beneath the broken horn.
The drake snapped toward her.
Galahad used the opening to drive his sword into the softer shoulder seam.
Iris ran around the back.
Not attacking.
Looking.
Then:
"Rear right leg! Old injury!"
Kael saw it.
Scar tissue near the joint.
The System confirmed only after Iris had pointed it out.
[Movement asymmetry detected]
Good.
The System was helping.
Iris had still noticed first.
Kael attacked the same leg with Ice along his blade.
The drake roared and twisted.
Milo raised one hand.
A force pulse hit the injured leg sideways.
Small.
Precise.
The joint buckled.
The drake dropped.
Darius moved for the neck.
Then stopped.
Kael saw why.
The platform beneath the drake cracked.
[COLLAPSE RISK]
"Back!"
Everyone moved.
The drake tried to rise.
Its injured leg failed.
The stone beneath it collapsed.
The creature dropped halfway through the platform.
One wing caught the edge.
The entire crossing shook.
Milo stared.
"Do we help it?"
Sera looked at him.
"No."
"Excellent."
The drake clawed at the stone.
Darius stepped forward.
Galahad caught his arm.
"Objective."
Darius looked toward him.
Galahad pointed toward Derren.
"Move."
Darius looked at the struggling drake.
Then at the widening cracks.
He nodded.
No unnecessary kill.
No staying to prove strength.
They retreated along the upper shelf.
Behind them, the mature drake continued fighting the collapsing platform.
Then a deep crack sounded.
The creature disappeared from view.
Kael did not look back.
The System flashed.
[Route stability deteriorating]
Recommended pace: immediate
"Faster."
Nobody asked why.
They moved.
The upper shelf curved around the geothermal channels and descended toward a darker tunnel beyond.
The ground shook once.
Then again.
The second tremor was stronger.
Ash fell from the ceiling.
Milo coughed.
"This is becoming personal."
The armed guide looked genuinely worried now.
"That was not normal."
Galahad looked at him.
"You have said that several times."
"This one is different."
"How?"
The man looked down.
"The lower heat is moving."
Kael’s System agreed.
[Environmental Update]
Subsurface thermal migration detected
Pressure increasing southwest
Local hazard level: rising
No eruption.
No catastrophe yet.
But the Caldera was becoming less stable.
And now they had something else to carry back with them.
Not Rellan’s body.
Not yet.
Something worse.
Certainty.
One of the Guild’s missing adventurers was not coming home alive.
