The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 289: The Cover They Built
Galahad’s order reached everyone at the same moment the Ash-King began its descent.
"Then we make cover."
For half a heartbeat, nobody moved.
Not because they did not understand.
Because the black platform offered almost nothing to work with.
The expedition stood on a broad shelf of volcanic stone surrounded by broken ridges, narrow fissures, and slopes descending toward orange light far below. The nearest surviving trees were too distant to matter. The old kiln road had disappeared behind them. The brood guards had already abandoned the shelf rather than remain beneath the approaching shadow.
Above them, the Ash-King turned.
Its chest glowed brighter.
Kael’s System filled the edge of his vision.
[CRITICAL WARNING]
Extreme thermal discharge imminent.
Projected impact area exceeds current platform width.
Natural cover: insufficient.
Survival probability under direct exposure: critically reduced.
That was useful.
Terrifying.
But useful.
Kael forced himself to look away from the warning and toward the terrain.
"System, scan structure."
The response came immediately.
[Structural Analysis]
Primary platform: volcanic basalt / obsidian composite.
Surface integrity: moderate.
Eastern ridge wall: fractured but dense.
Subsurface cavity detected beneath southeastern quarter.
Possible collapse under concentrated force.
Kael’s eyes snapped toward the eastern wall.
"Commander! East ridge is stronger than the center. There’s a hollow underneath the southeast side, so stay off it."
Darius looked once toward the ridge.
Then toward Galahad.
Galahad understood.
"Move east! Archer, Scout, get the litter against that wall. Mobile, I need a barrier over them. Commander, Prince, make him time."
Milo pushed himself upright.
His face had gone pale from the magic he had already spent, but his expression remained offended rather than afraid.
"Make him time?"
Galahad grabbed one side of Derren’s litter.
"That sounded better than ’stop the giant flying furnace.’"
Milo looked upward.
"I preferred the first assignment."
Sera and Iris seized the litter from the route workers and moved.
The healer stayed beside Derren, one hand holding his shoulder firmly as the litter jolted across the uneven stone. The two unidentified road workers followed without being told, one carrying supplies and the other helping steady the rear.
Kael noticed.
Useful.
No one standing around waiting for the named characters to save them.
Good.
Then the Ash-King screamed.
The sound struck hard enough that the healer stumbled.
Milo raised both hands.
Mana gathered around him.
Not the wide lattice he had used at the kiln station.
He did not have enough left for that.
Kael could see the difference immediately.
The spell formed closer to Milo’s body.
Denser.
More controlled.
A translucent plane of mana unfolded above the eastern ridge wall and curved downward like the beginning of a roof.
Milo grimaced.
"Mobile would like it recorded that roofs are traditionally constructed before dragons arrive."
The road worker beside him shouted, "That’s not a dragon!"
Milo glanced sideways.
"I am currently unwilling to debate taxonomy."
Sera reached the ridge with Derren.
"Higher!"
Milo looked at the mana barrier.
"It is already above you."
"The angle. Higher on the west."
He followed her line of sight.
Then understood.
The Ash-King was not directly above them.
Its approach came from the western sky.
The barrier needed to deflect rather than simply cover.
Milo adjusted.
The western edge rose.
The eastern edge dropped closer to the stone wall.
Sera nodded.
"Better."
Milo looked offended.
"I knew that."
"No, you didn’t."
"That information was developing."
Galahad almost laughed.
Almost.
Then the Ash-King inhaled.
Kael saw the light build beneath its throat.
The System responded.
[Combat Analysis]
Thermal charge accumulation detected.
Estimated discharge delay: 3.8–5.2 seconds.
Observed previous behavior: broad-area flame projection.
Current flight angle indicates downward sweep.
Kael looked toward Darius.
"Five seconds. Maybe less."
Darius did not ask how.
He ran west.
Kael followed.
Galahad shouted, "Do not leave the platform!"
They did not.
Darius stopped near the western edge.
Kael stayed ten paces behind him.
The Ash-King’s head lowered.
Darius raised his sword.
Kael felt his own instinct screaming at him to build Ice.
The System interrupted.
[Magic Advisory]
Broad Ice formation highly inefficient.
Ambient temperature elevated.
Recommended use: localized thermal disruption / directional shaping.
Kael understood.
Do not stop the fire.
Change it.
He looked toward the ridge.
Milo’s barrier could not survive the full attack.
But perhaps it would not have to.
"Commander, I need its head left."
Darius looked toward him.
"Why?"
"I’m going to bend the first part of the flame right."
Darius understood immediately.
"And make it correct."
"Yes."
"That gives me the turn."
Kael nodded.
Darius smiled.
Not warmly.
The Ash-King breathed.
Kael struck first.
Light flashed upward.
Not at the creature’s eyes.
Too far.
Too obvious.
He aimed beneath the left side of its jaw.
The burst struck scales and exploded into brilliance.
The Ash-King’s head jerked right.
Only slightly.
Enough.
The flame came with it.
Kael slammed both hands forward.
Ice did not form as a wall.
It erupted from the western edge of the platform in three narrow angled ridges.
The first vaporized almost instantly.
The second lasted a heartbeat longer.
The third caught the edge of the fire stream and forced it upward.
Steam detonated across the shelf.
The Ash-King corrected.
Exactly as Kael expected.
Its head swung left.
Darius moved.
Aura exploded from his blade.
Not toward the Ash-King’s body.
Toward the air beneath its right wing.
The strike did not cut the creature.
It hit the pressure around the wing and disrupted the angle of the turn.
The Ash-King dropped several feet.
Its fire stream dragged across the platform instead of striking the ridge directly.
Stone melted.
The western half of the shelf vanished beneath orange-white flame.
Kael felt his eyebrows singe despite the distance.
Then the remaining fire hit Milo’s barrier.
The mage screamed.
Not in fear.
Effort.
The barrier bent.
Sera stepped beside him.
"Left side collapsing."
"I noticed!"
She fired.
Kael thought she was attacking the Ash-King.
She was not.
The arrow struck a weakened stone spur above the ridge.
The spur cracked.
A second arrow hit the same point.
Stone broke free.
A slab dropped onto the western edge of Milo’s mana barrier.
Kael stared.
Sera had given the spell physical support.
Milo’s eyes widened.
"That was clever."
"You’re welcome."
"I was going to do that."
"You were screaming."
"Those are compatible activities."
The barrier held.
Barely.
Flame washed over it.
The stone slab glowed red.
Milo’s mana flickered.
Then the attack ended.
Silence followed.
Not true silence.
Everyone breathed.
Stone cracked as it cooled.
Fire burned along the western shelf.
Derren groaned beneath the ridge.
Milo remained standing for two seconds after the flame stopped.
Then sat down hard.
"I have completed my contribution."
Galahad looked at him.
"No, you haven’t."
Milo stared upward.
"Then leadership has become unreasonable."
Kael ran toward the ridge.
Darius followed more slowly.
Kael noticed.
The commander’s left side remained stiff from the brood guard’s earlier strike.
Still functional.
Not untouched.
Good.
This mission needed consequences.
Sera lowered her bow.
"One pass."
Iris looked toward the sky.
"It will circle."
The road woman beside her nodded.
"It always circles after a full burn."
Galahad turned immediately.
"How long?"
"Usually?"
"Yes."
"Less than a minute."
Milo closed his eyes.
"I regret asking for professional standards."
Kael looked at the platform.
Half of it was burning.
The southeast quarter remained dangerous because of the cavity beneath it.
The eastern ridge had protected them once.
It would not survive repeated direct hits.
The System flashed.
[Structural Analysis Updated]
Eastern ridge wall integrity reduced: 31%.
Mana-supported stone cover unlikely to withstand equivalent second impact.
Subsurface cavity expansion detected.
Collapse risk increasing.
Kael’s stomach tightened.
"We cannot stay here."
Galahad looked toward him.
"Route?"
Kael focused.
[Environmental Scan]
Thermal fractures appeared again.
The broad shelf extended southeast for perhaps forty yards before narrowing beside a deep crack.
Beyond that, cooler stone.
Then a descending corridor cut into the side of the ridge.
Kael pointed.
"There. Southeast. There’s a lower channel past the cracked section."
Iris followed his direction.
"I don’t see a route."
"Because part of it is below us."
Darius looked toward Kael.
"Cavity?"
"Yes."
Iris’s expression sharpened.
"A lava tube."
The route woman looked at her.
"Old flow tunnel."
Milo opened one eye.
"Does the tunnel contain lava?"
"Not necessarily," Iris said.
"That was an important word."
Kael focused harder.
The System updated.
[Subsurface Analysis]
Primary cavity temperature: elevated but below molten threshold.
Airflow detected.
Possible opening: southeast face.
"Not full lava. There’s airflow."
Galahad pointed.
"Scout."
Iris ran.
Not west.
Not toward the Ash-King.
Southeast.
She crossed the stronger portion of the platform, jumped a narrow fracture, and disappeared behind a black rock outcrop.
Sera remained near Milo and Derren.
Darius watched the sky.
Kael watched the System.
The Ash-King moved beyond the smoke.
Directional warning.
[Large heat source repositioning northwest.]
"Circling."
Darius nodded.
"Time?"
"Unknown."
"Estimate."
Kael looked at the last attack pattern.
The System offered no countdown now.
Correct.
It did not know.
"Less than a minute if the workers are right."
The road guide frowned.
"You trust us now?"
Galahad answered without looking at him.
"No."
Milo smiled faintly.
"I like him."
Iris returned.
"Opening."
Galahad turned.
"Size?"
"Enough for people. Litter sideways."
"Creature?"
"Anything brood-guard size won’t fit easily."
Darius asked, "Ash-King?"
"No."
"Good."
Kael looked toward Derren.
The healer already understood.
"We move."
Milo tried to stand.
Failed.
Sera caught his arm.
He looked at her.
"Archer, I appreciate your sudden devotion."
"I’m preventing you from falling on the patient."
"Less romantic."
Galahad took Milo’s other arm.
"You can walk?"
"Yes."
"Then walk."
"I liked you better when you respected specialists."
They moved.
The expedition crossed the remaining platform as quickly as Derren’s condition allowed.
Iris led.
One route worker carried the front of the litter with the healer helping stabilize it.
The second worker took the rear.
Milo moved under his own power with Sera close enough to catch him if needed.
Galahad covered the center.
Kael and Darius remained last.
Every role mattered.
The System flashed.
[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]
Kael looked up.
Shadow.
"Down!"
Darius moved first.
The Ash-King did not breathe fire.
It attacked physically.
The creature dropped through the smoke with its wings folded.
Kael had only seconds to understand how enormous it truly was.
The brood guard had been large enough to dominate the kiln choke.
The Ash-King made it look young.
Its front claws struck the platform.
The entire shelf jumped.
Stone split from one side to the other.
Kael fell to one knee.
Darius remained upright.
Barely.
The Ash-King’s head swung toward them.
Its eye was larger than Kael’s fist.
Dark.
Not mindless.
That disturbed him.
The creature looked at Darius.
Then Kael.
It recognized threats.
Darius raised his sword.
"Go."
Kael stared.
"You too."
"I will."
The Ash-King lunged.
Darius met the strike.
Aura erupted.
Sword against claw.
The impact sounded like a siege hammer hitting a gate.
Darius slid backward.
Ten feet.
Twenty.
His boots carved lines through ash.
But he stopped the claw.
Kael had never seen anything force Darius backward that far while he remained braced.
The Ash-King screamed into his face.
Darius’s cloak caught fire at one edge.
He cut it free without looking.
Kael moved around the creature’s flank.
System.
[Combat Analysis]
Target size exceeds current complete scan capacity.
Partial analysis available.
Frontal scales: extremely dense.
Thermal seams present beneath neck and thoracic plates.
Wing root mobility dependent on three major tendon groups.
Right wing: old scar tissue detected.
Kael’s eyes snapped toward the right wing.
Scar.
There.
A broad uneven ridge where scales had grown differently.
Not a weakness.
Maybe less flexible.
The System continued.
[Behavioral pattern incomplete.]
Current attention: primary frontal threat.
Darius.
Kael moved.
He used Light first.
A narrow beam.
Not meant to blind.
To make the Ash-King turn.
It did.
Faster than expected.
Its tail came around.
System warning.
[IMPACT VECTOR — RIGHT]
Kael ducked.
The tail passed over him.
Too close.
The wind alone knocked him sideways.
He rolled.
His injured shoulder struck stone.
Pain exploded.
The Ash-King followed.
It was not lumbering.
That was the danger.
Something this large should not move this fast.
Kael raised his sword.
The tail came back.
Darius intercepted.
His blade struck the hooked end.
Aura flashed.
The Ash-King’s tail deflected just enough to miss Kael.
"Move!"
Kael did.
He ran toward the right wing.
The creature tried to turn.
Darius attacked its front leg.
Not to injure.
To force weight shift.
The Ash-King responded.
Its right side lowered.
Kael saw the scarred wing root compress.
The System reacted.
[Pattern detected.]
Scar tissue restricts full extension during right-side load.
There.
Useful.
Kael shouted.
"Commander! Force its weight right!"
Darius did not question him.
He struck the left front leg.
The Ash-King shifted right.
Kael attacked the scarred wing root.
Ice coated his blade.
He cut.
The sword did not penetrate deeply.
But frost spread across the scarred scales.
The Ash-King roared.
Its wing snapped outward.
Kael threw himself down.
Too slow.
The edge caught his back.
He left the ground.
For a horrifying second, there was no stone beneath him.
Then he hit.
Hard.
Air vanished from his lungs.
The System blurred.
He could not breathe.
The Ash-King turned toward him.
Darius moved between them.
His Aura changed.
Kael felt it even while struggling for air.
The commander had been holding back.
Not because he feared the Ash-King.
Because the platform could not survive him fighting without restraint.
Now Kael was down.
That calculation changed.
Darius’s Aura compressed.
The air around his sword darkened with pressure.
The Ash-King lunged.
Darius cut.
The strike opened scales across the creature’s face.
Not deep.
Enough to produce blood.
For the first time, the Ash-King recoiled.
Milo’s voice came from the southeast opening.
"Commander!"
Darius looked.
Milo stood at the mouth of the lava tube.
Barely.
One hand raised.
Mana gathered around him.
Not much.
Enough.
"You have approximately one extremely irresponsible spell left from me!"
Darius understood.
So did Kael.
Kael forced himself onto one elbow.
"Milo, wing."
The mage looked toward him.
Kael pointed at the scarred right wing.
"Push it down when it shifts weight."
Milo smiled.
There he was.
"Finally. Reckless instructions."
Kael managed to breathe.
"Not reckless."
"That was disappointing."
The Ash-King turned toward Darius again.
Darius attacked left.
The creature shifted right.
Exactly as before.
Kael shouted.
"Now!"
Milo cast.
Not a giant barrier.
Not a blast.
A precise gravity-like pressure slammed downward onto the scarred wing.
The Ash-King’s right side buckled.
The creature crashed onto one knee.
The platform split.
Huge fractures raced outward.
Milo’s eyes widened.
"I may have overachieved."
Kael looked beneath the Ash-King.
The southeast cavity.
The fractures.
The System flashed violently.
[STRUCTURAL FAILURE IMMINENT]
Collapse propagation detected.
Estimated failure zone expanding northwest.
Kael understood.
Not kill it.
Drop it.
"Commander! Break the platform!"
Darius looked toward him.
Then beneath the Ash-King.
He understood.
Galahad shouted from the tunnel entrance.
"Can you do it without taking us with it?"
Kael looked at the System.
Red fracture lines.
One stable corridor.
Southeast edge.
The rest was failing.
"Yes!"
That was partly confidence.
Partly calculation.
Darius stepped back.
The Ash-King tried to rise.
Milo pushed again.
He screamed from effort.
The wing stayed down.
Sera fired from the tunnel entrance.
Her arrow struck the Ash-King’s injured face.
Not because she expected to kill it.
Because it turned.
That bought Darius the angle.
Iris shouted.
"Left seam! Dark line!"
She had seen it.
A natural fracture running beneath the creature.
Darius followed her direction.
Every party member feeding the same action.
Darius raised his sword.
Aura surged.
Kael slammed Ice into the fracture first.
Not to freeze the platform.
To widen the stress.
The System updated.
[THERMAL STRESS INCREASED]
Perfect.
Darius struck.
The shelf broke.
Not cracked.
Broke.
A section of volcanic stone larger than the Guild hall dropped beneath the Ash-King.
The creature screamed.
Its wings opened.
The damaged right wing failed to extend fully under Milo’s pressure.
For one second, the Ash-King fell.
Then it beat its left wing.
The creature struck the side of the collapsing shelf instead of disappearing into the fissure.
Claws caught stone.
The entire ridge shook.
Darius stared.
Milo stared too.
"That seems unfair."
Kael agreed.
The Ash-King began climbing.
Fast.
Galahad shouted.
"Withdraw!"
No debate.
No finishing blow.
No hero fantasy.
They ran.
Darius grabbed Kael by the arm and hauled him upright.
Kael nearly fell again.
"Can walk."
"Then prove it."
Kael ran.
They reached the lava-tube entrance just as the Ash-King’s head rose above the broken shelf.
Sera entered first after Iris.
Derren’s litter had already disappeared deeper.
The route workers followed.
Milo stumbled inside.
Galahad pulled him the final step.
Darius entered.
Kael last.
The Ash-King lunged.
Its jaws struck the opening.
Stone exploded inward.
Kael threw up Ice instinctively.
Not broad.
Localized.
A thick wedge formed between the jaws and the tunnel roof.
The Ash-King bit through it.
But that half second mattered.
Darius grabbed Kael and dragged him deeper.
The creature’s head could not fit.
One claw reached inside instead.
Huge.
Hooked.
It scraped across the tunnel wall, sending obsidian fragments everywhere.
Sera fired at the wrist seam.
The arrow struck.
The claw recoiled.
Milo collapsed against the wall.
"I am officially out of magic."
Galahad looked at him.
"Completely?"
Milo thought.
"I can probably warm tea."
Sera looked toward him.
"We may need that."
He smiled weakly.
"I knew I was essential."
The Ash-King roared outside.
The tunnel magnified the sound until Kael’s teeth hurt.
Then the System flashed.
[ENVIRONMENTAL WARNING]
Air pressure change detected.
Thermal concentration increasing at entrance.
Kael’s eyes widened.
"It’s going to breathe into the tunnel!"
Galahad reacted immediately.
"Move deeper!"
Everyone moved.
Iris led.
The lava tube curved sharply thirty yards ahead.
That might save them.
If they reached it.
The healer and route workers carried Derren as fast as they dared.
Milo tried to run.
Could not.
Sera threw one of his arms over her shoulder.
He looked at her.
"This is becoming intimate."
"Walk."
"Yes."
Darius stayed behind with Kael.
The Ash-King inhaled.
Light filled the entrance.
Kael looked at the System.
[Thermal discharge imminent.]
No Milo barrier.
No open terrain to redirect.
Narrow tunnel.
Then Kael saw the ceiling.
Black volcanic rock.
Fractured.
System.
[Structural Analysis]
Overhead shelf above entrance: unstable after external impact.
Localized collapse possible.
Kael smiled.
Darius saw it.
"What?"
"Cover."
Darius followed Kael’s eyes.
Then smiled too.
They had started the Chapter making cover.
Now they would make more.
Kael raised one hand.
Ice surged into the ceiling cracks.
Not enough to hold.
Enough to expand them.
Darius struck upward.
The tunnel entrance collapsed.
Tons of volcanic rock crashed down between them and the Ash-King.
Fire hit the falling stone.
The explosion threw Kael and Darius forward.
Kael rolled across the tunnel floor.
Heat chased them around the bend.
Then stopped.
Darkness returned.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The healer lit a small lamp.
Everyone appeared one by one.
Iris.
Galahad.
Derren.
The two route workers.
Sera.
Milo sitting against the wall with his head tipped backward.
Darius.
Kael.
All alive.
Not untouched.
Not comfortable.
Alive.
Galahad looked around.
"Report."
Iris answered first.
"No serious injury."
Sera flexed her shoulder.
"Fine."
Milo raised one hand weakly.
"Magically deceased."
"Not useful."
"Then tired."
The healer checked Derren.
"He held."
Good.
Darius touched his ribs and winced slightly.
Kael noticed.
"Commander?"
"Bruised."
"That looked worse than bruised."
"Later."
Kael looked at his own shoulder and back.
Painful.
Blood from several shallow cuts.
Nothing obviously broken.
The System appeared quietly.
[Status assessment available.]
Kael focused.
Minor lacerations.
Moderate muscular trauma: right shoulder / upper back.
No critical injury detected.
Useful.
He exhaled.
"I’m functional."
Galahad nodded.
Then looked back toward the collapsed entrance.
"We are not going back that way."
No one objected.
The road woman raised her lamp.
"There should be another opening."
Galahad turned.
"You’ve used this tunnel?"
"Not this section."
Milo groaned.
"Wonderful."
She ignored him.
"The old flow tunnels connect beneath the black shelf. Some open near the lower kiln road."
Kael looked at her.
"The lower station."
"Possibly."
"And the hatchery?"
The woman’s expression changed.
"Also possible."
Silence.
The expedition had escaped the Ash-King by collapsing the route behind them.
They had also trapped themselves underground in a volcanic tunnel system leading deeper toward the same place they had been trying not to approach without preparation.
Galahad looked toward Iris.
"Scout."
She took the lamp from the worker.
"Forward only until the first junction."
"Good."
Milo remained seated.
Galahad looked at him.
"Mobile."
Milo opened one eye.
"No."
"You need to move."
"I reject the concept."
Sera grabbed his arm.
He sighed.
"I continue under protest."
They moved deeper into the tunnel.
The temperature dropped slightly once they left the collapsed entrance behind, but the air remained dry and mineral-heavy. Thin lines of orange light appeared occasionally inside cracks in the rock.
Kael’s System remained active.
Not constantly shouting.
Watching.
That was better.
After twenty minutes, Iris stopped.
Everyone behind her stopped too.
Galahad moved forward.
"What?"
Iris raised the lamp.
Marks covered the tunnel wall.
Not white.
Not route signs.
Scratches.
Hundreds.
Some shallow.
Some deep.
Most low to the ground.
Kael approached.
Drake claws.
Small ones.
Many.
The route woman whispered.
"We’re beneath the hatchery."
Milo stared at the wall.
"Of course we are."
Then something clicked in the darkness ahead.
Once.
Twice.
Then dozens of times.
Small claws against stone.
Sera raised her bow.
Darius drew his sword.
Kael’s System flashed.
[DIRECTIONAL SCAN]
Multiple heat sources detected ahead.
The count attempted to resolve.
Failed.
Then updated.
Estimated number: 30+.
Kael stared.
"More than thirty."
Galahad’s face hardened.
"Distance?"
Closing.
Kael looked down the tunnel.
"Not far."
Milo pushed himself away from the wall.
Galahad looked at him.
"You said you were out."
"I am."
"Then stay behind Derren."
Milo stared into the darkness.
Then smiled weakly.
"I said I was out of large magic."
Sera glanced toward him.
"You lied."
"I preserved morale."
Mana flickered around one of his hands.
Very little.
But enough for something.
Iris extinguished the main lamp.
Darkness swallowed them.
Kael almost asked why.
Then understood.
Orange light moved ahead.
Dozens of points.
Eyes.
No.
Throats.
Small drakes crawled through the tunnel toward them, red heat beginning beneath their scales.
The Ash-King had been outside.
The hatchery was below.
And now the expedition was inside it.
