The Hidden Luna of Blackmoor Valley
Chapter 254 The choice
Chapter 254: Chapter 254 The choice
Talia’s POV
The silence stretched between us, heavy and suffocating.
I could feel it pressing against my skin, thick and cold. It was not just the silence of the dead land, it was the silence of wolves who were waiting, watching, and weighing their next move.
We had slowed down our walking a lot after the scout disappeared, and no one spoke. The weight of what had just happened pressed down on all of us. The enemy knew we were here, so there was no more hiding, and no more surprises.
It was time to swing fully in to action.
The scout would have reached Malachai by now. He knew exactly where we were, and exactly how many of us there were. The element of surprise was gone, and we were walking straight into whatever trap he had set.
I looked at the group, and at the faces of the wolves who had followed me this far.
I had not asked them to come, nor had I begged or pleaded or manipulated them into following me. They had chosen this path, chosen to stand beside me, and I did not know how I would ever repay them.
I looked at Kaelen, with his steady gaze and unwavering love, at Piper, with her bright smile and endless hope, at Jax, with his loyalty disguised as humor, at Silas, with his quiet strength, and at Cain, with his silent vigilance.
Each of them had their own reasons for being here. Kaelen had his love, Piper had her loyalty, Jax had his stubbornness and horrible jokes, Silas had his sense of duty, and Cain had his quiet determination. They were all different, but they were all here.
They had all come with me, and they had all risked everything.
And I could not let them walk any further without giving them a choice.
I had carried this guilt for too long, with the weight of their lives pressing down on my shoulders. I could not bear the thought of leading them to their deaths without giving them a way out.
I stopped walking, and I turned to face them.
I could see the questions in their eyes, the confusion and the worry. They did not know what I was about to say, but they could feel the tension in the air.
"We need to stop," I said.
Kaelen looked at me. "What are you doing?"
I did not answer him. I looked at the group, and I felt the weight of their trust pressing down on me.
"I need to say something," I said. "And I need you all to listen."
Piper’s face was pale. "Talia, what is it?"
I could see the fear in her eyes, and I knew she was thinking the same thing I was. That this was the moment everything would change.
I took a breath, and I forced myself to speak.
"You do not have to go any further," I said. "This is my fight, my mother, and my bloodline. I am the one Malachai wants, and I am the one he is waiting for."
I looked at each of them, one by one.
"I do not want to be responsible for your deaths," I said. "If you want to turn back, I will understand. I will not think less of you, and I will not hate you. You have already done more than I could have ever asked for."
Jax opened his mouth, but I held up my hand.
"Please," I said. "Let me finish."
I took another breath.
"There is a path behind us. It will take you back to Blackmoor Valley, it will take you back to your families, your homes, and your lives. You can walk away from this, and you can live."
I felt the tears prick at my eyes. "I do not want to watch any of you die for me."
"I have spent so many years being afraid of losing people, of being the reason someone I love never comes home, and that fear has followed me everywhere I have gone," I said, my voice cracking with emotion as I looked at each of them.
"I watched my mother walk into the fire at Cresswood and I could not save her, I watched my father fade away and I could not bring him back, and I have carried that weight on my shoulders for so long that I forgot what it felt like to not be afraid." I paused, wiping the tears from my cheeks.
"But standing here, and looking at all of you, I realize that I have been so focused on the fear of losing you that I forgot to be grateful for having you in the first place. You chose to come with me, you chose to stand beside me, and that means more to me than I could ever put into words, and I need you to know that no matter what happens from here, I am grateful for every single one of you."
The words hung in the air, heavy and raw. I had said it out loud now, and it was the thing I had been afraid to admit for so long. I was terrified of losing them, and I was terrified of being the reason they never made it home.
The silence stretched between us, heavy and expectant.
Then Kaelen stepped forward. He took my hand, and his gray eyes were steady.
I felt the warmth of his fingers wrapped around mine, and I held onto it like a lifeline. He was the anchor that kept me from drifting away.
"I am not leaving you," he said. "I will never leave you."
Piper stepped up beside him. "I am not leaving either, Talia. You are my best friend, and I am not going anywhere."
Her voice was fierce, and I could see the fire in her eyes. She had always been brave, even when she was scared, and I loved her for it.
Jax crossed his arms and grinned. "We have come too far to turn back now. Including crossing through that freezing river. I am not doing that again."
I could see the fear behind his grin, but I could also see the courage. He was scared, but he was not going to run. He had never been the type to run.
I almost laughed. Almost.
Silas stepped forward. "We are in this together, Luna. Until the end."
Cain did not speak. He looked at me, nodded once, and just stepped forward and stood beside the others.
His silence said everything. He did not need words to show his loyalty. His actions spoke louder than anything he could have said.
I looked at them, and I felt the tears streaming down my face.
"I do not deserve you," I said. "Any of you."
Kaelen pulled me into his arms. "Yes, you do."
Piper reached out and took my hand. "We are here, Talia. We are not going anywhere."
I let myself cry, and I let myself feel the weight of their love, their loyalty, and their courage.
When I finally pulled back, I wiped my tears.
I looked at the group, and I made them a promise.
"We are going to get through this," I said. "I am going to find my mother, and we are all going to come home together."
Kaelen squeezed my hand. "Together."
His voice was firm, and I could feel the strength in his grip. He was not going to let me face this alone, and he never had anyway.
Piper smiled. "Together."
Jax muttered something under his breath. "This is going to be the longest walk of my life."
I could hear the humor in his voice, even though I knew he was scared. He was trying to lighten the mood, to make things feel normal again, and it worked.
I laughed, and it felt good. Then we continued forward, together.
I could still feel the magic pressing against my skin, cold and sharp. But it did not feel as heavy as it had before, because their presence beside me made it bearable.
The darkness stretched out before us, but I was not afraid.
I had been afraid for so long, afraid of failing, afraid of losing, and afraid of being alone. But standing here, with them beside me, I realized that fear had no power over me anymore.
I was not alone.
