The Hidden Luna of Blackmoor Valley
Chapter 251 The border
Chapter 251: Chapter 251 The border
Talia’s POV
Kaelen had carried me for what felt like hours before they finally settled me into the cart. My body was still weak, and my head was still pounding, but I was awake, and I was alive.
Piper had insisted I rest, and Kaelen had not left my side. The group had moved forward, determined to keep going, even as the land began to change around us.
The cart moved slowly, and I lay on the blankets, staring up at the gray sky, as I felt the weight of everything pressing down on me. My body was still weak, and my head was still pounding, but I was awake, and I was alive.
I had come so close to losing myself in that vision, and to being consumed by the fire and the darkness. But I had pulled through, I was still here, and I was still fighting.
Kaelen walked beside the cart, with his hand resting on the edge, close to mine. He did not speak, but I could feel his eyes on me, checking on me without words.
Piper rode beside us, her face still pale with worry. "How are you feeling, Talia?"
"Better," I said. "I’m still tired, but better."
"That is good," Piper said. "You scared us."
"I know," I said. "I am sorry."
"Stop apologizing," Kaelen said. "You are awake, and that is all that matters."
I smiled weakly. "Yes, Alpha."
He glared at me, but there was no heat in it.
I let out a small laugh, and I saw the corner of his mouth twitch. It was not a smile, but it was close. And it was enough.
The landscape began to change. The trees became twisted and blackened, with their branches reaching toward the sky like grasping fingers. The ground was cracked and dry, and the air felt heavy, and thick with something wrong.
I could feel it pressing against my skin, like a weight I could not shake. It was not just the air that had changed, it was the land itself, and the very ground beneath us.
I sat up slowly, and I felt the weight pressing down on my chest.
"Kaelen," I said. "Something is different."
He looked at me. "What do you mean?"
I closed my eyes and breathed in.
I let the air fill my lungs, and I felt the magic settle on my tongue. It was bitter and cold, and it made my stomach turn.
The air was thick and heavy, and I could taste something in it. It was old and dark, like ash and iron.
"It is the magic," I said. "Malachai’s magic. I can taste it."
I opened my eyes, and I saw the worry on their faces. They were all looking at me, and waiting for me to tell them what to do.
Piper’s eyes widened. "You can taste it?"
I nodded. "It is in the air, and it is all around us."
I could feel it in my chest, pressing against my heart. It was like the land itself was alive, like they were watching us, and waiting for us to make a mistake.
Jax rode up beside us. "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"
Silas shook his head. "It means we are close."
I looked at him, and I saw the grim set of his jaw. He knew what we were walking into, and he had seen the destruction Malachai left behind.
Kaelen’s jaw tightened. "We are entering enemy territory."
I looked at the twisted trees and the blackened ground, and I felt the cold settle into my bones. "We are close. I can feel it." I said to the group.
I gripped my pendant, and I felt the warmth of it against my palm. It was a small comfort, but it was enough.
We rode in silence for a while longer, and the land grew darker and more barren. The trees were dead, and the ground was black.
I could see the bones of animals scattered on the ground, bleached white by the sun. Nothing lived here, and nothing could survive.
There was a line where the land changed, like a scar across the earth.
I stared at it, and I felt the cold settle into my bones. This was the line, and this was where everything changed.
Kaelen raised his hand, and the group came to a stop.
"What is it?" Jax asked.
Kaelen pointed ahead. "Look."
I followed his gaze, and I saw it. The land on the other side was different, and darker. The trees were dead, and the sky was gray. There was a line, and a clear divide between the land we were on and the land ahead.
I climbed down from the cart, and I walked to the line.
My legs were shaking, and my hands were trembling. But I forced myself to move, to take each step, and to face what was coming.
I stood there, staring at the black earth, and I felt the magic pressing against my skin.
It was like a thousand tiny needles, cold and sharp. I could feel it seeping into my bones, and I knew that once I crossed, there would be no going back.
"Luna," Kaelen said, calling me by my title for the first time. "Are you ready?"
I looked at the group, and I felt the weight of their trust.
They were all looking at me, waiting for me to lead them. They had followed me this far, and they were not going to turn back now.
"You do not have to come with me," I said. "This is my fight."
Kaelen stepped forward. "I am not leaving you."
His voice was firm, and I could see the determination in his eyes. He was not going to let me face this alone.
Piper took my hand. "I am not leaving either."
Jax grinned. "We have come too far to turn back now."
I could see the fear behind his grin, but I could also see the courage. He was scared, but he was not going to run.
Silas nodded. "We are in this together."
Cain did not speak. He just stepped forward and stood beside us.
I felt the tears prick at my eyes. "Thank you," I said. "All of you."
Kaelen took my hand. "Together. Remember?"
I nodded, took a breath, and I stepped across the border.
I felt the weight of the decision settle on my shoulders, heavy and final. This was it, and there was no turning back now.
The moment my foot touched the black ground, I felt a chill run through my body. The magic was stronger here, pressing against my skin like a weight. It was cold and dark, and it made my stomach turn.
I looked back at the group, and they followed me.
One by one, they stepped across the line. Kaelen was beside me, with his hand in mine. Piper was behind me, her face pale but determined. Jax was muttering something under his breath, while Silas and Cain brought up the rear.
Piper whispered a prayer under her breath, and Jax muttered something about being in trouble now.
Kaelen continued to walk beside me, with his hand in mine.
We were in enemy territory now, and there was no turning back.
I looked ahead at the dark land stretching out before us, and I felt the weight of everything pressing down on me. But I did not feel afraid, I felt determined, because my mother was out there, and I was coming for her.
