Chapter 249: Chapter 249 The necklace glow and the fever breaks
Kaelen’s POV
I held my breath, waiting for something to happen, waiting for her to wake up, and waiting for her to open her eyes.
The light dimmed, and I could see Talia’s face again. Her skin was no longer reddish, and her breathing had slowed, and her body had relaxed.
Piper let out a shaky breath. "Is she okay? Is she alive?"
I could hear the tears in her voice, and I knew she was praying. At this moment, we all were.
I pressed my hand to Talia’s forehead, and I noticed that the heat was gone. "The fever broke." I whispered, with shock in my voice. "Look at her face," I said, my voice trembling with hope. "She is not in pain anymore. Whatever the necklace did, i think it had worked, it had pulled the fever out of her, and I think her mother is the one doing this."
"I was so scared I was going to lose her," I admitted, my voice cracking as I looked down at her peaceful face. "I have been scared before, and I have faced death more times than I can count, but nothing has ever terrified me as much as watching her slip away and not being able to do anything to bring her back."
Jax let out a long breath. "Thank the Moon Goddess."
Silas nodded. "Luna is so strong."
I looked down at Talia, and I felt the tension in my shoulders ease.
I let out a breath I did not know I had been holding. She was alive, and that was all that mattered.
She was still pale, and her breathing was shallow. But she was alive, and that above all things, gave me peace.
I brushed the hair from her face, and I whispered to her. "You came back to me, Talia. You always have to come back to me." I kissed her forehead. "I made you a promise when we started this journey," I whispered, as my lips continued to brush against her forehead. "I promised I would keep you safe, and that I would protect you, and I broke that promise today because I could not protect you from this, and I am so sorry, Talia, I am so sorry."
I pressed my lips to her forehead again, and I felt the warmth of her skin. It was normal now, and she was cooling down fast.
Piper sat beside the cart. "What do we do now?" She asked.
I looked at the group. "We set up camp for an hour, so I can watch her body for any changes. If her heat level stays normal, then we would continue the journey. But if not, then we would return."
“But Kaelen, if we return, Luna would not like that.” Silas said. “But I believe her heat level would remain normal, from the glow of her necklace.”
I stared at Silas with cold eyes. “It is better for her to be angry at me, than for me to lose my mate.”
“You are right, Alpha.” Silas said.
“I also believe she would be okay, telling from the glow of her necklace.” Piper said, sniffing back tears.
I turned away from the group to face Talia. I did not care how long it took, I would wait for her to be better first. I would always wait for her.
"I know you can hear me, Talia," I said to her ears, with my voice low and fierce as I held her hand. "I know you are in there, fighting, because that is what you do. You fight and you never give up, and I need you to keep fighting right now, and I need you to come back to me, because I cannot do this without you. I cannot be the man I am supposed to be without you by my side, and I am begging you, to please just open your eyes, just look at me one more time, and I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to go through anything like this again."
But Talia did not respond.
"We stay here until she gets better, and wakes up." I said. "I do not care if it takes hours or days or weeks," I continued, with my voice steady and certain. "We are not moving from this spot until she opens her eyes and looks at me, because she is my mate, she is my heart, and I am not leaving her side for anything in this world."
Jax nodded. "I will gather wood for a fire."
Silas said, "I will set up the tents."
Cain did not speak, he just nodded once and walked to help Silas.
Piper stayed beside the cart. "I will stay with her."
I looked at Talia, and I took her hand. "I will be right here, baby. I am not leaving your side, no matter what."
