Chapter 219: Chapter 219 Beside Her

Talia’s POV

I stood on the roof, looking up at the moon.

The silver light spilled across the valley below, painting everything in soft, pale tones. It was beautiful, and it made me feel small in the best way, like my problems were just a tiny part of something much bigger.

The mountains stood like ancient guardians on the horizon, their peaks silver-tipped and silent, and I imagined all the wolves who had stood on this very roof before me, looking up at the same moon, carrying their own burdens and their own hopes.

I felt connected to them in a way I could not explain, like I was part of a long line of wolves who had refused to give up, and I felt the silence wrap around me like a blanket.

The prayer had left me feeling lighter.

I had not realized how much I had been carrying until I let it go. The words had flowed out of me like water, and I felt like I could breathe again.

I was more at peace than I had been in days, but the weight was still there.

It was still heavy, and I could still feel it pressing down on my shoulders. But it was bearable now, like a burden I had learned to carry instead of one that was dragging me under. And, it no longer felt like it was crushing me.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

They were soft and familiar, and I knew who they belonged to before I even saw his face, because I had memorized the sound of his footsteps long ago.

I turned, and Kaelen was standing there.

He was in his nightclothes, with his dark hair slightly tousled from sleep. He must have woken up and come straight here, without stopping to dress or prepare.

His gray eyes were soft, and his face was calm, and I knew that he had followed me.

He did not ask what I was doing up here.

He just looked at me with those steady gray eyes, and I knew that he understood. He did not need to ask, because he already knew.

There was something about the way he looked at me in that moment, with those gray eyes that had seen me at my worst and my best, that made me realize he understood the weight I was carrying.

It was not because I had told him, but because he had learned to read the language of my silences, the subtle shifts in my breathing, and the way I held my shoulders when I was trying to be brave.

He did not ask if I was okay. He just walked to stand beside me, and he looked up at the moon.

His shoulder brushed against mine, and I felt the warmth of his presence seep into me. It was a small thing, but it meant everything.

I looked at him. "How did you know I was here?"

"I could not find you in the room," he said. "So I looked for you. I followed the mate bond, and it led me here."

I did not know what to say, so I said nothing.

The words were there, tangled up in my throat, but I could not find a way to untangle them. So I let them stay there, and I let the silence speak for itself.

We stood in silence, side by side, looking up at the moon, and enjoying the night air that was cool, and crisp.

I could feel the breeze on my skin, and I could smell the faint scent of pine and earth, that always clung to the air when Kaelen was around me. It was grounding, like a reminder that the world was still turning, even when everything felt uncertain.

But the world was still, and the stars were scattered across the sky like tiny diamonds.

I picked out the brightest one, that had a steady pulse of light that seemed to flicker just for me, and I let myself pretend it was my mother’s way of telling me she was still there, still fighting, and still waiting for the daughter she had not seen in fifteen years.

I held onto that small, impossible hope like it was the only thing keeping me connected to the earth.

As I looked up at them, I wondered how many of them my mother had seen from her prison. I wondered if she had looked up at the same sky, and hoped that someone would come for her.

The moon was full and bright, and I continued to whisper prayers, but Kaelen did not pray.

He just stood beside me, with his hands resting loosely at his sides, and his gaze fixed on the moon. He was not looking for answers, and he was not asking for help. He was just being present, and he did not speak.

And sometimes, that was enough.

There were no words that could make this easier, and no promises that could erase the fear. But his presence, and his quiet steadiness, was worth more than any words could ever be.

I leaned my head on his shoulder, and I felt the warmth of his body against mine.

His hand found mine, and his fingers laced through my own. It was a small gesture, but it felt like a lifeline.

I did not feel alone, even as I thought about everything that lay ahead.

I thought about the dangers waiting for us, the enemies we would face, and the long road that stretched out before us. But I also thought about the hope that was waiting at the end of it.

The Ashen Lands, Malachai, and my mother waiting for me after fifteen years. The fear was still there.

It had not disappeared, and I did not think it ever would, but it no longer controlled me. It was just a part of me, like the grief, and the love, and the hope. But it was quieter now.

I looked at Kaelen, and I felt the love in his eyes.

There was no doubt in his gaze, and no hesitation. He was exactly where he wanted to be, and I was exactly where I was meant to be.

He had come to look for me up here, because he knew I needed him. And he had not asked questions.

That was all I had ever needed. Not words, and not promises, just his steady presence beside me.

I did not know how long we stood there, because the minutes blurred together, and time lost all meaning. All I knew was that Kaelen was beside me, and that was enough.

The silence stretched between us, but it was not empty. It was filled with everything we could not say, and everything we did not need to.

When I finally turned to go back inside, I felt ready.

I was not afraid anymore, because I had Kaelen, I had my pack, and I had my mother waiting for me.

And I would bring her home.
