The evening settled over the house the way it always did. Dishes stacked by the sink. The last of the stew scraped into a bowl for the dogs.

Clara banked the stove and set the dough to rise under a damp cloth. Lara checked the clinic latch, then walked the short path to the gate and tested the ward edge with two fingers the way she always did before dark.

Eli stayed in the kitchen longer than the rest of them. She dried the last of the cups with slow, steady motions, the cloth turning in her hands the same way it did every night.

Lara and Clara went upstairs. Their footsteps faded. Atlas started to follow. Eli’s hand closed around his wrist before he reached the doorway.

"Stay."

Not a question. Not a request. Just the word, flat and certain.

He turned. The kitchen lamp threw its usual yellow light across her face. Her eyes were the same practical eyes she used when she measured timber or set a fence post. They were warmer now, but the warmth did not soften the directness in them.

"They know," she said. "Lara already kissed you twice today. Clara kept finding reasons to touch your shoulder. I’m not asking for permission. I’m telling you I want the next hour without the other two in the middle of it."

The house did not require secrecy. It only required honesty. Atlas felt that truth settle into place the way it always did when one of them spoke plain.

"All right," he said.

Eli stepped in close. Her hands settled at his waist, fingers spreading against the fabric of his shirt the same way they braced a post when she drove it into the ground.

She kissed him without any of the slow build the others sometimes used. Straightforward. Thorough. The same practical certainty she brought to every task she took on. Atlas answered it.

One hand slid up her back. The other rested at the nape of her neck. The kiss deepened by degrees. Eli made a low sound against his mouth and pressed closer until there was no remaining space between them.

When she finally drew back, her breathing had changed. The rise and fall of her chest was deeper. Her mouth stayed close to his.

"Upstairs is theirs for now," she said. "The storage room is empty. And the bed there is narrow, but it will do."

She took his hand and led him up the side stairs. The boards creaked under their weight the same way they always did. The storage room still smelled faintly of clean linen and the herbal salve Clara kept on the upper shelves. Eli closed the door without locking it. In this house locks had never been necessary.

She turned to face him and pulled her shirt over her head in one motion. The rest of her clothes followed with the same lack of ceremony. Shirt. Trousers.

Undergarments. She stood naked in the low light without shifting or covering herself. Atlas watched her, then undressed in turn. Eli’s gaze tracked every piece of fabric as it left his body. Practical. Openly hungry. She looked at him the way she looked at a tool she intended to use well.

"Come here," she said.

He did. Eli backed him against the narrow bed until the backs of his knees hit the mattress. She pushed him down and climbed over him, knees bracketing his hips.

Her hands were already mapping the lines of his chest and stomach, palms flat, fingers pressing into muscle the way they pressed into wood when she checked a beam for soundness.

Her mouth found his again—deeper this time, wetter, with none of the restraint she sometimes showed when the others were present.

Atlas’s hands settled on her thighs, then higher, feeling the solid strength of her. She was built for work. He felt that strength under his palms and under the weight of her body as she settled more fully against him.

Eli broke the kiss long enough to speak against his lips.

"I’ve watched Lara claim you with that edge she has. I’ve watched Clara keep you with her quiet numbers and her careful hands. I want my turn without sharing the air for a while."

She reached between them and guided him into her in one steady motion. The sound she made was low and satisfied. Atlas’s breath left him in a rough exhale. Heat. Tightness. The wet grip of her body taking him in without hesitation.

Eli settled fully, palms braced on his chest, and began to move with the same controlled power she used when driving stakes into the ground—unhurried, exact, relentless.

The narrow bed framed every shift. The mattress was thin. The frame creaked under them. Eli leaned down and kissed him again while she rode him, one hand fisted in his hair, the other braced beside his head. Atlas met her rhythm. His hands gripped her hips hard enough to leave faint marks.

When she sat back he followed the motion, thrusting up to meet her. Eli’s head tipped back, throat exposed. Atlas’s mouth found the side of her neck, then lower, open and wet against her skin. She made another low sound and pressed down harder, taking him deeper.

They did not rush. Eli took what she wanted in long, steady strokes. She adjusted the angle when she needed more pressure, slowing when she wanted to feel every inch of him. Atlas gave it without holding back.

His hands stayed on her hips, guiding, holding, feeling the flex of muscle under her skin as she worked herself on him. The storage room filled with the quiet sounds of skin and breath and the occasional creak of the bed frame.

Somewhere downstairs the house remained peaceful. Somewhere upstairs Lara and Clara would be settling into the wide bed, fully aware of where the other two had gone and unconcerned by it.

Eli’s pace stayed measured for a long time. She leaned forward again, bracing both hands on the mattress beside his shoulders, and rolled her hips in a tighter circle.

Atlas felt the change in friction. He thrust up to meet her, harder now. Her breath hitched once, then settled into a deeper rhythm.

Sweat gathered at the small of her back under his palms. He slid one hand higher, between her shoulder blades, and held her there while he pushed deeper.

She sat up again without warning, took his wrists, and pinned them lightly against the mattress above his head. The shift changed the angle. She rode him harder, using the strength in her thighs and the weight of her body. Atlas could feel every clench of her around him.

He could see the focus in her face—the same focus she wore when she measured a cut or checked a joint. She was taking exactly what she wanted and making sure he felt every part of it.

When she finally released his wrists, Atlas sat up with her still astride him. The narrow bed forced them close. Her legs wrapped around his waist. His arms locked around her back.

They moved together that way for a stretch of time that felt longer than it was—bodies tight, mouths open against each other’s skin, the sound of their breathing loud in the small room.

Eli’s teeth scraped once along the line of his shoulder. Atlas answered by biting the side of her neck, not hard enough to break skin, just enough to leave a mark she would feel later when she moved.

Eli pushed him back down. She stayed upright this time, hands braced on his stomach, and worked herself on him with shorter, sharper strokes. Atlas watched her. The way her breasts moved. The way her stomach flexed. The way her mouth stayed slightly open as she focused on the friction.

He reached between them and pressed his thumb against the place where their bodies joined, rubbing in tight circles the way he knew she liked. Eli’s rhythm stuttered for half a second. Then she bore down harder, chasing the pressure he offered.

The end came without drama. Eli’s rhythm finally broke with a low, practical groan against his shoulder. Her body tightened around him in strong, controlled waves.

Atlas held her through it, hands locked on her hips, feeling every pulse of her climax. He followed a few moments later, pulling her down hard as he came, burying himself as deep as the position allowed.

They stayed locked together while the aftershocks moved through both of them. Eli’s forehead rested against his. Her breath was steady again, but deeper than before.

"Logistics remain sound," she murmured, the same line she always used, only now it carried a rough edge of satisfaction.

Atlas’s hands stroked slowly up and down her back. "They do."

Eli kissed him once more—softer, but still thorough—then shifted just enough to keep him inside her while she settled against his chest. The narrow bed forced them to stay close. Neither of them minded.

Atlas felt the residual heat of her body, the stickiness of sweat and come between them, the solid weight of her settling into the space she had claimed for the hour.

They stayed that way for a while. Eli’s fingers traced idle lines across his ribs. Atlas’s hand rested at the back of her neck, thumb moving in small arcs against her skin. The house was quiet around them. No footsteps. No voices calling them back yet.

"We should go back before the others decide we got lost," she said after a stretch of silence. "But not yet."

"Not yet," Atlas agreed.
