Chapter 214: Chapter 214: Just How Many Women Do You Have?

"It’s fine. You can just wait here. It’s not like it’s some random place."

"It’s so hot outside. Let Mengmeng rest and get something to eat. I’ll really be back in a minute."

Jiang Fan was getting anxious. His bonus was on the line, not to mention whether Li Muwan would get to stay.

"What’s so important that you have to go out right now?"

"Leaving us behind to go be with your ’fiancée’?"

Yin Ruxue spoke the last sentence in a very low voice.

Jiang Fan flinched. "What fiancée? Don’t be ridiculous."

"Okay, I have to go. Text me if you need anything."

He could feel his phone vibrating non-stop in his pocket. Without even looking, he knew it had to be messages from Li Muwan.

After saying that, Jiang Fan turned and left. The moment he closed his door, Li Muwan’s door happened to open.

She was standing in the doorway with her parents. Their eyes met, and for a split second, they both froze.

’Phew, what a close call!’ Jiang Fan thought to himself.

’That was really too close. If I had been half a minute later, their whole act would have been exposed.’

"I told you to come back quickly, to hurry back, but you just had to finish up that little bit of work."

"But you’re here now, so come downstairs with us. My parents want to look around Yang City."

Li Muwan had launched a preemptive strike, a move that completely cut off any thoughts her parents might have had of interrogating Jiang Fan.

Jiang Fan had been gone for far too long just now.

After all, his current role was to meet her parents as Li Muwan’s boyfriend.

Disappearing for so long right after their first meeting—anyone would think he had an attitude problem.

"Okay, then how about we take your parents to look around the Celestial Dragon District? It’s more bustling over there."

With an apologetic expression, Jiang Fan took two steps forward to stand before Zhou Jing and Li Jiaxiang. "I’m truly sorry."

"I got held up at work for a bit."

Neither of them were petty people, though they did feel a bit resentful of Jiang Fan’s actions.

"It’s fine. It’s only right for young people to prioritize their careers."

"We’re not a couple of old fossils, you know."

"Let’s go, Wan."

Zhou Jing smiled gently, and that smile brought Jiang Fan a great deal of relief.

"Mom, you’re the best~"

"Unlike Dad, who’s always so stern. What if he scared Fan?"

Li Muwan turned and hugged Zhou Jing’s arm.

The group of four chatted as they walked into the elevator.

Especially when they passed his own front door, Jiang Fan’s heart leaped into his throat.

He was terrified that Mengmeng would open the door, run out, and yell "Daddy."

The moment the elevator doors slid shut, Jiang Fan quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

Li Muwan, standing beside him, was even more relieved.

"Mom, Dad, please wait here for a moment. Fan and I will go get the car."

"Let’s go, Jiang Fan. We’ll get the car."

Li Muwan gave Jiang Fan no chance to refuse, pulling him along down to the second basement level.

Once they were in the car, Li Muwan let go of Jiang Fan’s hand as if she’d been caught stealing.

Jiang Fan, who had been slightly angry, found most of his irritation vanishing when he saw her cautious, darting eyes.

"Relax, they didn’t follow us. And hey, you can’t just spring something like this on me without a heads-up."

"Do you have any idea how nervous I was?"

Thinking back on everything that had just happened, Jiang Fan couldn’t help but complain.

"I’m really sorry about this. I honestly couldn’t think of anyone else who could help me."

"My parents have been driving me crazy lately. If I didn’t invent a nonexistent boyfriend, I’d probably have to leave this city and give up everything I have now."

Li Muwan looked genuinely apologetic.

It was sincere; she truly had no other choice.

"Why? You’re already so successful, and your parents don’t seem particularly old-fashioned."

"Why would they still try to interfere so forcefully with your marriage?"

"It makes no sense at all."

"Besides, it’s not like you’re at an age where you absolutely have to get married."

Jiang Fan just couldn’t figure it out.

"My parents are manageable. It’s mainly my grandfather."

"He’s a complete, old-fashioned traditionalist. He never wanted me to start my own business in the first place."

"On top of that, his health hasn’t been very good for the past couple of years."

"So whatever his opinion is, the family tries to accommodate it. We do our best not to upset him, otherwise... what if his condition worsens..."

At this, Li Muwan sounded helpless.

Jiang Fan didn’t know what to say for a moment. Every family has its own troubles, and her situation did seem a bit impossible.

"So, does that mean we have to keep up this act from now on, without letting them see the slightest flaw?"

The realization suddenly hit him.

"Yes..."

Li Muwan glanced at him, looking a little embarrassed.

"But... I..."

Jiang Fan rubbed his nose.

"Don’t worry, I’ll pay you. I definitely won’t let you do this for nothing."

"Two thousand a day! You can go handle your own work when you need to."

"But when I call you to come over, you have to get here immediately. No matter what, we can’t let them suspect anything is wrong."

"I won’t be going to the office during this time anyway."

"We just need to get through this period. I’ll figure something else out after that."

The moment he heard the money, Jiang Fan immediately sat up straight.

"It’s not about the money. The main thing is, I’m just a guy who loves to help people."

"Don’t you worry. I’ll handle this for you perfectly. Just give me a call if you need anything."

"But you need to be careful, too. Even if we get through this, dealing with your grandfather later on won’t be so simple."

"An old-fashioned man with poor health—his temperament is bound to be a bit strange. He’ll most likely insist on his own opinions and refuse to listen to anyone else."

"If you’re not mentally prepared for that, I suggest you start preparing now."

"I know, you money-grubber."

This time, Li Muwan didn’t just snark in her head; she actually said it out loud.

And yet, that single sentence seemed to invisibly close the distance between them quite a bit.

"Who has a problem with money? I can’t just throw away cash to save face, can I?"

Jiang Fan replied matter-of-factly.

"Let’s go. We’ll drive over."

Li Muwan was already starting to plan things out in her head.

She was in no mood to bicker with Jiang Fan or say anything else.

Just as she started the car, Li Muwan seemed to remember something. "Oh, right. I have a question for you. How many women do you have, exactly?"
