The Game Where I Was Rank One Became Reality

Chapter 466: The Counter-Strike

  • Next Chapter

The neutral border-state of Vespira was a gray, frozen wasteland, and the agricultural guildhall built into the side of a jagged ravine looked entirely unremarkable. It had grain silos, muddy loading docks, and a dozen tired guards walking the perimeter.

Nissa Tarvond’s divine optics parsed the physical reality in a microsecond, stripping away the mundane illusion to reveal the lethal architecture beneath.

Threat analysis: Class-9 magical concealment. Subterranean kinetic traps. High-density aetheric tripwires.

The guildhall was a fortress. It was the heart of the Korthane proxy war.

Nissa did not draw a weapon. She stepped out from the cover of the frozen pines, her silver armor gleaming faintly in the moonlight.

Three paces to her right, Harsk Fenward materialized from the shadows. The Sovereign’s greatest assassin did not look like a man anymore. He looked hollow. The massacre at Sector Four had burned away his structural faith in Zephyr’s civilization. What remained was simply a flawlessly calibrated instrument of death, operating entirely on momentum.

They did not speak. They did not need to. They were two halves of the same divine algorithm.

Operation commencing.

Harsk sprinted toward the perimeter fence, covering the open ground with terrifying, frictionless speed. He didn’t bother checking for traps or scanning the frozen mud for thermal tripwires. He just moved in a straight, hyper-lethal line directly at the primary entrance.

The Korthane defenses triggered instantly.

A dozen subterranean kinetic launchers erupted from the frozen mud, firing a storm of super-dense Korthane alloy spikes at Harsk’s back. Simultaneously, the perimeter guards dropped their mundane crossbows and raised highly advanced, rapid-cycle aetheric projectors, bathing the kill-zone in searing green light.

Nissa deployed.

She did not throw a massive, two-hundred-meter dome as she had during the riot. She focused her absolute preservation into micro-bursts of silver aether.

Calculate vector. Intercept.

A silver shield, no larger than a buckler, flashed into existence directly behind Harsk’s neck to shatter a Korthane spike mid-flight. Another shield bloomed beneath his left foot, absorbing the kinetic shockwave of a hidden landmine so he could push off the explosion without losing a fraction of his momentum. A third shield deflected the incoming green aetheric beams, scattering the lethal energy harmlessly into the cold night sky.

Harsk never slowed down. He never looked back. He trusted Nissa’s defense implicitly. Because Nissa absorbed one hundred percent of the defensive burden, Harsk could dedicate one hundred percent of his focus to lethality.

He breached the perimeter, his shadow-steel blades decapitating three guards in a single, fluid rotation.

Nissa walked calmly behind him, her silver optics tracking the shifting geometry of the battlefield, acting as the immovable anchor for Harsk’s unstoppable storm.

They breached the main guildhall and descended into the subterranean vault.

The internal guard was waiting for them. Forty elite Korthane operatives, clad in heavy, non-reflective aether-armor, formed a defensive phalanx at the bottom of the stairwell. They were highly trained professionals, armed with the best anti-magic weaponry the Hegemony could forge.

But they could not comprehend the synergy of the Heroes.

Combat parameter: Technique C. Absolute polarization.

The Korthane commander shouted an order. Forty rapid-cycle projectors fired simultaneously, creating a solid wall of lethal green energy designed to vaporize anything in the stairwell.

Nissa stepped in front of Harsk. She slammed her silver boot into the stone floor, calling up a massive, rectangular barricade of pure silver aether that absorbed the combined Korthane barrage. The silver shield hissed and smoked under the withering fire, but it held firm.

Nissa was entirely incapable of offense (CF-003) and she was strictly bound to silence (CF-004), meaning she existed for one singular, absolute purpose: to endure.

But Harsk was the blade.

While the Korthane operatives were blinded by the flash of their own sustained fire against Nissa’s shield, Harsk vaulted off Nissa’s shoulders, launching himself over the silver barricade and directly into the center of the Korthane phalanx.

The slaughter was surgical. Where Harsk had fought like a rabid beast in Sector Four, crushing starving civilians with a heavy wrench, here he reverted to the flawless precision of the Ghost School. He was fighting professionals. He was comfortable again.

He moved through the phalanx like water. A flick of the wrist severed a femoral artery. A backhand strike shattered a windpipe. He did not block a single counter-attack. When a Korthane operative swung a heavy aether-mace at Harsk’s blind spot, a tiny silver shield flared into existence exactly where the mace was about to strike, absorbing the blow perfectly. Nissa, standing ten paces back, was controlling the defensive geometry of the entire room.

In less than two minutes, thirty-nine elite Korthane operatives were dead on the floor.

Harsk wiped the blood from his blades, his breathing perfectly steady. He walked toward the massive, heavily warded steel vault at the back of the room—the intelligence core.

Nissa followed behind him, her silver optics parsing the complex, interlocking magical wards deeply etched into the steel vault.

Analyzing aetheric structure. Identifying creator signature.

While Harsk began physically cutting through the mundane locking mechanisms with his shadow-steel dagger, Nissa parsed the complex, interlocking rings of the magical defense matrix.

The wards were built with absolute, mathematical precision. There was no chaos in the design. It was the unmistakable signature of the Arbiter’s domain: Law and Order.

More terrifyingly, Nissa realized the wards were highly specialized to a degree rarely seen outside the capital. They were not designed to stop a crude physical breach, nor were they meant to repel a Rank 7 protector like herself. They were specifically calibrated to absorb and reflect Rank 9 divine magic.

Strategic realization confirmed. Bait parameter identified.

Sera Myrvalis had been right. The Arbiter had constructed this node as a lightning rod. If Zephyr had attacked this facility personally, he would have unleashed a massive divine strike to vaporize it, and these wards would have reflected that energy directly back into the exosphere, draining Zephyr’s Faith Points right before his Ascension Vigil.

The Sovereign Imperium had narrowly avoided a strategic catastrophe.

With a heavy clack, Harsk bypassed the final physical lock. He kicked the heavy vault door open and stepped inside.

The intelligence core was a small, cold room filled with ledgers, communication crystals, and mapping tables. At the center of the room stood the Korthane commander, bleeding heavily from a severed artery in his thigh—the only operative Harsk had intentionally left alive.

The commander leaned heavily against a mapping table, coughing blood onto the floor.

Harsk crossed the room in two strides, grabbing the commander by the throat and slamming him against the wall. Harsk drove his dagger through the commander’s shoulder, pinning him to the stone.

The node was secured. The intelligence would be burned. The Korthane supply line was officially severed.

"The purse string is cut," Harsk said, his voice a hollow, dead whisper. He did not feel the thrill of victory. He only felt the crushing weight of the thirty thousand civilians he had murdered to keep the Imperium alive long enough to reach this room.

Nissa lowered her silver barrier, standing silently in the doorway, registering the mission as a complete tactical success.

The Korthane commander looked at Harsk’s dead eyes. Then, slowly, the commander began to laugh. The laugh bubbled through the blood in his throat, a wet, horrifying sound of absolute triumph.

"You cut the purse string, Hero," the commander gasped, coughing up a violent spray of blood as he looked over at the burning ledgers on the desk. "But... the dog is already off the leash."

Nissa’s logic engine processed the metaphor.

Analyzing geopolitical structural shift (POL-001).

The Arbiter had used the Economic Leg (Korthane funding) to arm the Rootists, attempting to build the Ideological Leg of the Cult Splinter. But the Sovereign Imperium had assumed the rebellion was still reliant on that funding.

The commander’s dying laugh revealed the fatal flaw in their calculus.

Zephyr’s twenty percent quota increase, combined with the massacre at Sector Four, had pushed the Rootists completely past the cruelty floor. They didn’t need Korthane anti-magic alloys anymore. They didn’t need Korthane silver. The ideology was now fully radicalized. They were willing to tear down the Faith Point condensers with their bare hands.

The Cult Splinter was a self-sustaining wildfire. The Arbiter didn’t need to fund it anymore. He just had to sit back and watch the Sovereign Imperium burn itself to the ground.

Harsk realized it a second before the commander died. The surgical strike, the flawless infiltration, the tactical victory—it was all completely meaningless.

Harsk ripped his dagger from the commander’s shoulder and drove it straight through the man’s heart.

The commander went limp, a bloody smile still plastered across his face.

Nissa Tarvond stood silently in the doorway of the ruined vault.

Primary objective achieved. Target has been eliminated. The Korthane threat is fully neutralized.

Her divine logic recorded a victory. But as she watched Harsk Fenward stare blankly at the dead commander, she understood the terrifying reality. They had won the battle. But the war was already lost.
