Chapter 87: Chapter 78: The Might of a Single Sword Sweeps the Battlefield

She treated all of this as a real battlefield.

"What do we do? What do we do? You guys, think of something!" Zheng Liu cried out, tears streaming down her face.

Hearing this, Chai Xi quickly analyzed their current situation.

"This won’t work. If we keep this up, none of us will be able to escape!"

"Then what do we do?!" Zheng Liu shrieked again, her voice choked with sobs.

Just as Chai Xi was about to suggest they split up and run, Xu Jianliang suddenly spoke up. "I’ll hold it off. You guys go first."

"Huh?!"

Zheng Liu and Chai Xi stared in astonishment at Xu Jianliang, who had stopped in his tracks, prepared to face the Giant Armored Worm alone. They were stunned on the spot.

The more emotional Zheng Liu was moved to tears by Xu Jianliang’s heroic and tragic stand. Even the usually calm Chai Xi couldn’t help but feel a twinge of admiration.

He guessed that Xu Jianliang wanted to show off in front of Zheng Liu, playing the macho hero card. But he had to admit, Brother Xu was playing this hand beautifully—when push came to shove, he actually stepped up!

He thought, "Good luck, bro! I’m rooting for you, but this brother of yours is out of here!"

Being moved was one thing, but running for his life was another. Not only did Chai Xi not slow down, he sprinted even faster. After all, a crafty schemer like him specialized in keeping a low profile to guarantee survival. He would never do something he knew was impossible.

As for Zheng Liu...

Although she was deeply moved, her timid nature and intense fear of bugs kept her running without missing a beat.

On the street, Xu Jianliang, left alone to cover the rear, took a deep breath as he watched the Giant Armored Worm rapidly approaching.

He wondered, "In Liu’s eyes, I must look really cool right now, right?"

Then, he calmly looked at the Giant Armored Worm not far away and suddenly roared, "Come on, you monster!"

Faced with the provocation of this weak Human Race member, the Giant Armored Worm immediately sped up, ready to happily devour the free meal delivered right to its mouth.

Once the creature closed the distance, Xu Jianliang slammed his hands onto the ground, pouring out the Wood Attribute Spiritual Power in his body without reservation. A massive cluster of wooden spikes erupted from the earth, blocking the Giant Armored Worm’s path.

If it were any other Nine Nether Evil Object with a weaker physical body, it might have actually chosen to avoid Xu Jianliang’s dense wooden spikes. However, the Giant Armored Worm, possessing a tough carapace, was completely fearless. After all, it could smash through cars and concrete walls with ease, let alone wooden spikes cast by a mere Qi Cultivation Seventh Level Practitioner.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Xu Jianliang’s wooden spikes ultimately posed no threat to the Giant Armored Worm and were smashed to splinters in an instant.

In moments, it rushed right up to Xu Jianliang and opened its gaping, bloody maw to bite him.

Watching this unfold, Xu Jianliang felt very calm inside. After all, from the very beginning, he had never expected to hold this Giant Armored Worm off for long. To buy time for the girl he liked, Zheng Tongxue, to escape at the cost of his own life—that was his true goal!

He thought, "Never underestimate a man’s resolve to protect his secret crush!"

Looking at the Giant Armored Worm’s rapidly approaching maw, Xu Jianliang calmly closed his eyes.

He thought, "Everything... is about to end. I just hope Zheng Tongxue can get away safely."

But almost the instant he closed his eyes, a familiar and resonant Dragon Roar echoed beside his ear.

SLASH!

Accompanied by a strong gust of wind sweeping past his ear, Xu Jianliang only heard a harsh, slicing sound. A moment later, the sound of two heavy objects hitting the ground rang in his ears. Then, Xu Jianliang felt a burst of warmth on his face, as if some sort of liquid had been splashed onto him.

When he opened his eyes again, he saw that the once-massive Giant Armored Worm had somehow been cleaved in two. Its bisected body lay on opposite sides of the street, coating the ground in copious amounts of black blood.

Staring at the scene, Xu Jianliang’s mind went completely blank.

He thought, "Wh-What just happened?"

"Xu Tongxue, being a simp is destined to be a dead end..."

Xu Jianliang turned his head and saw Lu Chen walking out from a nearby alley, the Magic Sword in his right hand still vibrating continuously. He finally snapped back to his senses. Without a doubt, the person who had suddenly appeared and slain the Giant Armored Worm with a single sword strike to save him was none other than Lu Chen.

He thought, "But Lu Tongxue... since when did you become so strong?!"

Looking at the dazed Xu Jianliang, Lu Chen didn’t say much. Instead, he turned his gaze toward the direction Chai Xi and Zheng Liu had fled. The two of them, who should have been far away by now, were actually sprinting right back toward them.

And trailing right behind them was another Giant Armored Worm!

He thought, "These two unlucky bastards really just jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire!"

As Chai Xi ran for his life, he yelled, "Seriously, Zheng Liu! Why didn’t you say you were on your period? You’ve completely screwed us!"

Beside him, Zheng Liu cried and loudly retorted in dissatisfaction, "How was I supposed to know this Holographic Helmet was so realistic that it could perfectly replicate my menstrual cycle?!"

Just as the two were forced to run back while hurling the blame at each other, they suddenly spotted Lu Chen and Xu Jianliang standing next to the corpse of the first Giant Armored Worm.

They thought, "Wh-What is going on?!"

In a state of shock, the two inexplicably skidded to a halt once they reached Lu Chen and Xu Jianliang.

What confused them even more was that the second Giant Armored Worm—the one attracted by the scent of Zheng Liu’s blood—had also stopped for some unknown reason. It stood over ten meters away, a wary expression on its face. It looked as if it had been intimidated by something.

Chai Liu looked at the Giant Armored Worm corpse next to Lu Chen and Xu Jianliang and quickly regained his composure. He pointed at the carcass and asked in disbelief, "Lu Tongxue, did you do this?"

Lu Chen didn’t have time to answer him. Instead, he walked straight past him and actively approached the other Giant Armored Worm. After all, with such a massive chunk of Experience Points right in front of him, he had no time to entertain Chai Xi’s questions.

Watching Lu Chen approach, the Giant Armored Worm—which was invincible in the eyes of Chai Xi and the others—actually began to continuously retreat.

Although Lu Chen could suppress his aura, once the distance was closed, the Giant Armored Worm’s keen hearing and sense of smell immediately warned it that he was not someone to be trifled with, making it highly apprehensive.

As Lu Chen drew closer, the Giant Armored Worm completely lost its nerve. Under the shocked gazes of Chai Xi and the others, the second creature that had been chasing them suddenly turned its head, trying to burrow into the ground and flee.

Seeing this, Lu Chen’s expression turned icy. "Did I... say you could leave?"

As his words fell, Lu Chen took a step forward. In the blink of an eye, his figure turned into a blur, instantly appearing in the air right above the Giant Armored Worm.

By this point, a third of its body had already burrowed into the ground.

In response, Lu Chen’s eyes narrowed sharply, and the Magic Sword in his right hand once again let out a resonant roar akin to a Dragon Roar.

Swordsmanship... Water Dragon Roar!

"ROAR!"

...
