Chapter 28: Chapter Twenty-Six: The First Forest

Lin Yue stood at the edge of the northern field.

The sunrise had barely begun.

Yet the horizon was already filled with golden lights.

One.

Ten.

Fifty.

A hundred.

Perhaps more.

They floated above the distant mountains like tiny stars.

Lumi stood beside her.

For once, the little Guardian wasn’t mischievous.

She was staring at the lights with complete concentration.

Lin Yue whispered:

"How many?"

Lumi raised her head.

Her golden mark brightened.

The lights shifted.

Lin Yue watched them carefully.

Then Lumi lowered one hoof.

A number appeared in the air.

[127.]

Lin Yue stared.

"One hundred and twenty-seven?"

Lumi nodded.

Shen Rui, standing behind them, looked toward the horizon.

"That seems like a lot of Guardians."

Lin Yue nodded.

"Too many."

Lumi looked offended.

Lin Yue immediately corrected herself.

"Not too many Guardians."

She pointed toward the valley.

"Too many Guardians for a single ecosystem."

Lumi considered that.

Then nodded.

Not a Gathering

Lin Yue returned to the house and spread several maps across the table.

Her father looked at them.

"What are you planning?"

"Nothing yet."

Her stepmother, Madam Zhao, raised an eyebrow.

"You’ve spread seven maps across the dining table."

"I’m thinking."

"That usually means you’re planning something."

Lin Yue sighed.

"Fine."

She pointed toward the Golden Space.

"There are at least one hundred and twenty-seven awakened Guardian signatures."

Her father looked impressed.

Madam Zhao looked worried.

"What do they want?"

Lin Yue paused.

"Probably their homes."

That answer surprised everyone.

She continued.

"They aren’t soldiers."

"They aren’t pets."

"And they aren’t resources."

She tapped the map.

"They are ecological guardians."

Shen Rui nodded.

"So you can’t simply bring them all here."

"Exactly."

The Problem With a Forest

Lin Yue had learned enough about ecosystems to know that good intentions could still cause disasters.

Introducing a species into the wrong environment could destroy an ecosystem.

Too many herbivores could strip vegetation.

Too many predators could eliminate prey.

Too many pollinators could alter plant reproduction.

Too many plants could change soil chemistry.

Even beneficial organisms could become harmful when placed somewhere they didn’t belong.

The Golden Space was magical.

But magic did not mean consequences disappeared.

Lin Yue wrote three words across the top of the page.

BALANCE BEFORE EXPANSION

Shen Rui read it.

"You really intend to apply environmental science to magical creatures."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because ecology doesn’t stop being ecology just because something glows."

He smiled.

"That sounds exactly like something you’d say."

Lumi’s First Assignment

Lin Yue turned toward Lumi.

"I need your help."

Lumi immediately became alert.

She loved being given important tasks.

"I need you to identify the Guardians."

Lumi blinked.

"Not bring them here."

Lumi’s ears drooped.

"Just identify them."

She held up her fingers.

"What kind?"

Lumi looked toward the horizon.

The golden lights changed.

Some became green.

Some blue.

Some silver.

Some pale white.

Lin Yue stared.

"They’re different."

Lumi nodded.

"Different species?"

Lumi shook her head.

"Different ecological roles?"

Lumi nodded enthusiastically.

Lin Yue smiled.

"Good."

The Guardian Classification

Lin Yue began building a classification system.

Forest Guardians

Connected to trees and woodland ecosystems.

River Guardians

Connected to freshwater.

Meadow Guardians

Connected to grasses, flowers, and pollinators.

Wetland Guardians

Connected to water filtration and marsh ecosystems.

Mountain Guardians

Connected to highland ecosystems.

Soil Guardians

Connected to decomposition and soil regeneration.

Seed Guardians

Connected to plant diversity and propagation.

The list continued.

Shen Rui watched her write.

"You’re turning mythology into biology."

Lin Yue smiled.

"That’s because mythology is sometimes poorly documented biology."

He laughed.

"That may be the strangest sentence I’ve ever heard."

The First Visitor

The first Guardian arrived before noon.

It came from the northern forest.

Lin Yue expected something magnificent.

Perhaps a giant stag.

Perhaps a phoenix.

Perhaps a glowing wolf.

Instead—

a squirrel fell out of a tree.

Plop.

It landed on Lumi.

Lumi squeaked.

The squirrel jumped up.

It was tiny.

Brown.

Round.

Its tail was enormous.

Lin Yue stared.

The squirrel stared back.

Then it stole her pencil.

"Hey!"

The squirrel ran.

Lin Yue chased it.

Shen Rui laughed.

"You’ve met your first Guardian."

"That isn’t funny."

"It is slightly funny."

The Squirrel Guardian

The squirrel climbed onto the roof.

Lin Yue stood below.

"Give me my pencil."

The squirrel held it between its teeth.

"No."

It chittered.

Lin Yue crossed her arms.

"I need that."

The squirrel shook its head.

"It’s not yours."

Lin Yue blinked.

"Did it just speak?"

Lumi nodded.

The squirrel chirped again.

A translation appeared.

[SEED KEEPER.]

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

"Seed Guardian."

The squirrel puffed out its chest.

Then dropped the pencil.

It immediately landed on Lin Yue’s head.

Shen Rui laughed.

Lin Yue looked up.

"I dislike this Guardian already."

The squirrel stole her notebook.

"Very much dislike."

The Seed Keeper’s Garden

The squirrel Guardian led them into the northern forest.

There, Lin Yue discovered hundreds of tiny seed caches.

Acorns.

Berries.

Nuts.

Wild grains.

Tree seeds.

Medicinal plants.

Flower seeds.

The squirrel had been collecting them.

Lin Yue crouched.

"You’re preserving biodiversity."

The squirrel nodded.

She smiled.

"You’ve been doing seed banking naturally."

The squirrel tilted its head.

Lin Yue laughed.

"Never mind."

She created a protected seed garden.

Instead of replacing the squirrel’s work, she expanded it.

Storage jars.

Drying racks.

Catalogues.

Moisture protection.

Seed labels.

Records.

The squirrel watched.

Then immediately stole a label.

Lin Yue sighed.

"Fine."

The Second Guardian

The next Guardian appeared at the river.

It was a long silver fish.

It had translucent fins.

Its scales shimmered like moonlight.

Unlike the squirrel, it didn’t speak.

It simply swam upstream.

Lin Yue followed.

The fish stopped beside a patch of reeds.

The water there was unusually clear.

She tested it.

The sediment was lower.

The water moved through a natural filtration zone.

Lin Yue smiled.

"A living water guardian."

Shen Rui looked at the fish.

"What does it do?"

"Maintains the river."

"How?"

"Probably several ways."

She began observing.

The fish moved among the reeds.

Small organisms gathered around it.

The water became clearer.

Lin Yue immediately began designing a wetland system.

The Third Guardian

The meadow Guardian was a bee.

A very large bee.

Almost the size of Lin Yue’s hand.

It had golden wings.

A tiny crown.

And a personality problem.

It followed Lin Yue everywhere.

Whenever she planted something—

it inspected the flowers.

Whenever she harvested something—

it inspected the harvest.

Whenever Shen Rui approached—

it inspected him.

Eventually, it landed on his nose.

Shen Rui froze.

Lin Yue burst out laughing.

"Don’t move."

"I wasn’t planning to."

The bee buzzed.

Lin Yue translated.

"She says you’re suspicious."

Shen Rui stared at her.

"Why?"

Lin Yue shrugged.

"You’re tall."

"That is the reason?"

"Apparently."

The Fourth Guardian

The soil Guardian was not cute.

It was a worm.

A very large worm.

Lin Yue found it beneath the compost pile.

It glowed faintly gold.

Its body was covered in tiny patterns.

Lumi approached it respectfully.

Lin Yue knelt.

"Hello."

The worm continued eating.

Lin Yue smiled.

"That’s probably the most important Guardian we’ve met."

Shen Rui looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because everyone ignores soil."

She pointed toward the worm.

"But without healthy soil, nothing else matters."

She immediately established a soil laboratory.

Compost testing.

pH testing.

Organic matter analysis.

Nutrient monitoring.

Microbial observation.

The worm became the unofficial mascot.

The farmers loved it.

The Guardian Council

After a month, twelve Guardians had settled into the Golden Space.

Not all lived near the farm.

That was deliberate.

Each had its own habitat.

The forest Guardian remained in the forest.

The fish remained in the river.

The bee remained in the meadow.

The soil Guardian remained underground.

The squirrel lived between the forest and farm.

Lumi supervised them.

Lin Yue established a simple rule:

Guardians choose their own habitats.

No one could capture them.

No one could sell them.

No one could use them as tools.

No one could force them to perform.

They were part of the ecosystem.

Not property.

The Family Learns the Rule

Her father approved.

Her stepmother, Madam Zhao, approved.

The village elders approved.

But General the rooster did not.

General had developed a rivalry with the Seed Keeper.

The squirrel had stolen three of his sunflower seeds.

General considered this a declaration of war.

Every morning, the rooster chased the squirrel.

Every afternoon, the squirrel threw nuts at General.

Every evening, Lumi tried to separate them.

One day, Lin Yue found General sitting on a tree branch.

She stared.

"Since when can you climb trees?"

General crowed proudly.

The squirrel threw an acorn at him.

General fell off.

Lin Yue covered her face.

"I give up."

A Growing Town

While the Guardians settled into their habitats, the human settlement continued growing.

The sanitation project expanded.

The printing house produced more manuals.

The mill processed more grain.

The cooperative opened a storage warehouse.

A carpenter’s workshop became a furniture business.

A blacksmith’s shop began producing improved agricultural tools.

The village school added mathematics.

Then accounting.

Then basic natural science.

Then practical engineering.

Lin Yue insisted on one principle.

Teach people how things work.

Not merely how to operate them.

If a pump broke—

someone should understand the pump.

If an irrigation channel failed—

someone should know how to repair it.

If a printing press jammed—

someone should be able to fix it.

If a crop failed—

someone should know how to investigate why.

The valley was slowly becoming self-reliant.

The First Agricultural Academy

The school eventually became too small.

So Lin Yue proposed something larger.

An agricultural academy.

Her father stared at her.

"You want to build another school?"

"Yes."

"For farmers?"

"For everyone."

"What will they learn?"

Lin Yue handed him the curriculum.

Agronomy.

Soil science.

Botany.

Ecology.

Animal husbandry.

Water management.

Forestry.

Accounting.

Basic engineering.

Food preservation.

Sanitation.

First aid.

Weather observation.

Business management.

He stared at the pages.

"This is a university."

Lin Yue smiled.

"Eventually."

Shen Rui’s New Position

Shen Rui became responsible for the academy’s practical administration.

He complained.

Frequently.

"This is unfair."

Lin Yue looked up.

"Why?"

"You gave me accounting."

"You’re good at it."

"You gave me logistics."

"You’re good at that too."

"You gave me construction planning."

"You’re good at that."

He stared at her.

"What did you give yourself?"

Lin Yue pointed toward a pile of books.

"Everything else."

He sighed.

"You’re impossible."

She smiled.

"And yet you’re still here."

He paused.

"Yes."

His expression softened.

"I am."

Lin Yue looked away.

Her cheeks warmed.

A Quiet Evening

After dinner, they walked through the orchard.

The trees were beginning to flower.

Lumi followed several steps behind.

She had learned that Lin Yue and Shen Rui sometimes wanted quiet.

At least—

she pretended to understand.

Shen Rui looked at the orchard.

"You’ve changed this place."

Lin Yue shook her head.

"We changed it."

"You did most of it."

"No."

She pointed toward the fields.

"The farmers worked."

Toward the workshops.

"The craftsmen worked."

Toward the school.

"The teachers worked."

She looked at him.

"You worked."

Shen Rui smiled.

"Then perhaps we really are building something."

Lin Yue nodded.

"Something that can outlive us."

The First Forest

That night, Lumi led Lin Yue north.

They reached a clearing she had never seen before.

A single sapling stood in the center.

It was unlike any tree in the Golden Space.

Its trunk was silver.

Its leaves were golden.

Its roots glowed beneath the soil.

Lin Yue approached.

"What is this?"

Lumi bowed.

Lin Yue stared.

"You want me to plant it?"

Lumi shook her head.

She touched the ground.

The sapling planted itself.

Roots spread outward.

The earth trembled.

One tree became three.

Three became ten.

Ten became fifty.

Within minutes, an entire grove had appeared.

Lin Yue stepped backward.

"This isn’t normal growth."

Lumi nodded.

"Then what is it?"

The Guardian pointed toward the sky.

A golden symbol appeared.

[WORLDSEED FOREST INITIATED.]

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

The First Forest

The trees continued growing.

Not uncontrollably.

They stopped at the boundary of the designated area.

Then something remarkable happened.

The forest began creating its own ecosystem.

Moss.

Fungi.

Flowers.

Insects.

Birds.

Small mammals.

Streams.

Ponds.

The soil changed.

The air changed.

The temperature changed.

Lin Yue watched in wonder.

The forest wasn’t simply growing.

It was building itself.

She whispered:

"Self-sustaining ecosystem."

Lumi nodded.

Lin Yue smiled.

"You’ve been waiting for this."

Lumi nodded again.

The Guardian Network

One by one, the other Guardians arrived.

The Seed Keeper squirrel.

The river fish.

The giant bee.

The soil worm.

Others followed.

Each moved toward the new forest.

No one commanded them.

No one directed them.

They simply knew where they belonged.

The forest began glowing.

Lin Yue’s Golden Space responded.

[BIODIVERSITY THRESHOLD REACHED.]

[ECOLOGICAL NETWORK STABILIZED.]

[WORLDSEED FOREST: ACTIVE.]

Then:

[GOLDEN SPACE EXPANSION: +35%.]

The horizon moved.

Mountains rose.

Rivers lengthened.

New valleys appeared.

Lin Yue stared.

The Golden Space had just become enormous.

The Price of Growth

Then the system produced one final message.

[WARNING.]

Lin Yue’s smile disappeared.

"What now?"

The words appeared slowly.

[LARGER ECOSYSTEM REQUIRES LARGER ENERGY INPUT.]

Lin Yue frowned.

"What kind?"

[BIOLOGICAL ENERGY.]

"Meaning?"

[THE GOLDEN SPACE CAN NO LONGER DEPEND ENTIRELY UPON THE KEEPER.]

Lin Yue understood.

The Golden Space needed to become independent.

It needed sunlight.

Water cycles.

Nutrient cycles.

Decomposition.

Pollination.

Food webs.

Natural regeneration.

She smiled.

"That’s actually good."

Shen Rui looked at her.

"How?"

"It means the space is becoming a real ecosystem."

The New Goal

Lin Yue opened her notebook.

She wrote:

PROJECT: SELF-SUSTAINING GOLDEN SPACE

Objective:

Create an ecosystem requiring minimal supernatural intervention.

She added:

Solar energy.

Water cycle.

Nutrient cycle.

Biodiversity.

Seed reproduction.

Wildlife balance.

Soil regeneration.

Natural succession.

Then she paused.

Finally, she wrote:

Human stewardship.

Shen Rui read it.

"You’re making yourself unnecessary."

Lin Yue smiled.

"That is the goal."

He looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because if everything depends on me..."

She closed the notebook.

"...then I haven’t built anything lasting."

The Hidden Root

Deep beneath the new forest, a root reached downward.

Past soil.

Past stone.

Past ancient ruins.

Past the forgotten city.

It touched something buried there.

A door.

The door opened.

Inside was a chamber.

And within that chamber—

a sleeping figure opened its eyes.

Not a Guardian.

Not a machine.

A human.

An ancient human.

His eyes glowed faintly red.

He looked upward.

"The Worldseed has awakened."

A second figure appeared behind him.

"Who awakened it?"

The first figure smiled.

"The Keeper."

"And who is the Keeper?"

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he seemed to remember something.

Then he whispered:

"She is the daughter of the last one."

The Question Lin Yue Never Asked

Back at the farm, Lin Yue stood beneath the stars.

Lumi rested beside her.

The new forest shimmered in the distance.

Shen Rui approached.

"You’re thinking again."

"Yes."

"About?"

Lin Yue looked toward the forest.

"I keep wondering..."

"What?"

"Why did the Golden Space choose me?"

Shen Rui was silent.

Lin Yue continued.

"I’ve always assumed it was because of my knowledge."

"Your Environmental Science degree."

"Years of wilderness training."

"Your books."

She nodded.

"All of it."

She looked at Lumi.

"But maybe that’s not the reason."

Shen Rui waited.

Lin Yue whispered:

"Maybe I was chosen because I would eventually understand that I wasn’t supposed to own it."

Lumi’s golden mark glowed.

The forest answered.

Far beneath the earth—

the Worldseed pulsed.

And somewhere beyond the mountains—

another ancient door opened.

The age of the Guardians had returned.

But this time, they had something the ancient civilization never possessed.

A Keeper who didn’t want to rule.

A family willing to stand beside her.

A community learning to build for itself.

And a tiny golden Guardian who had absolutely no intention of letting Lin Yue work herself to death.

Lumi suddenly bit Lin Yue’s sleeve.

Lin Yue looked down.

"What?"

Lumi pointed toward the house.

Lin Yue frowned.

"I have work."

Lumi shook her head.

"There’s accounting."

Lumi shook her head harder.

"Engineering?"

Another shake.

"Research?"

Lumi looked deeply offended.

Lin Yue finally understood.

"Sleep?"

Lumi nodded enthusiastically.

Shen Rui laughed.

"I agree with her."

Lin Yue sighed.

"Fine."

She began walking home.

Behind her, the Worldseed Forest shimmered beneath the moonlight.

And for the first time—

the Golden Space grew while its Keeper slept.
