The Extra Who Will Swallow The Plot
Chapter 162: Seventeen Days to Be Strong Enough
Chapter 162: Chapter 162: Seventeen Days to Be Strong Enough
The mind space didn’t look like anywhere real, which was the point.
Asura had built it — or grown it, or whatever the correct word was for something an ancient consciousness did to the inside of Raze’s own skull — as a flat gray plain stretching in every direction with no horizon to speak of, no sky, no ground texture beyond a suggestion of solidity under his feet. Every distraction stripped away. Nothing here but the two of them and whatever Asura decided to throw at him tonight.
’Seventeen days,’ Asura said internally, materializing across from him in the only shape he’d ever worn — Raze’s own face, marked and crimson-eyed, the resemblance close enough that sparring him had felt, in the earliest sessions, uncomfortably close to fighting a mirror. Raze had stopped finding it unsettling months ago. Mostly. ’You understand what that number means for tonight’s session.’
"It means you’re not going easy on me."
’I have never once gone easy on you. Tonight I intend to go considerably harder.’ Asura’s blade formed in his hand, not steel, not anything with a real name — a weapon that existed because the entity wielding it had decided a weapon should exist there. ’Whatever waits at that monastery on the appointed night will not fight the way the Elysian assassins fought. It will not fight the way anything you have faced fights. Speed without precision gets you killed. Strength without speed gets you killed slower, which is not the improvement it sounds like.’
"So what does get me through it."
’Both. At once. Without the gap between them that you still carry.’ Asura’s stance shifted, unhurried, the total economy of Demon King Form settling over him like something he’d put on rather than something he did. ’But tonight I want something else from you first. Something we have avoided long enough.’
Raze already knew what he meant. "The merger."
’The merger,’ Asura confirmed. ’You have used Transcendent Will exactly once, in the fight against Shade, and what came out of you was not what you intended. A shockwave when you asked for a wall. Power without direction. You have not attempted it again since, and I have not pushed you, because the Academy year required you to hide what you are rather than master it.’ His blade lowered. ’That reasoning no longer applies. Nothing that happens in here is visible to anyone but us.’
Raze felt the old caution anyway, the year-long habit of keeping the transformation buried where the Headmaster’s scrying and thirty watching delegates couldn’t find it. It took a conscious effort to remember that habit had no purpose here.
"Walk me through it properly this time," he said. "Not just — throw willpower at the problem and hope."
’That is precisely why the first attempt went wrong. You treated conviction like force, aimed it like a weapon, and let it detonate. Transcendent Will is not force. It is truth, applied to reality until reality agrees with it. The difference matters enormously.’ Asura’s form seemed to steady, take on weight it hadn’t carried a moment before. ’Close your eyes. Not to concentrate — to stop watching yourself attempt this, which is its own form of doubt.’
Raze closed his eyes.
’Now. Choose one true thing about yourself. Not a wish. Not an intention. Something that is already, entirely, without argument, true.’
The mind space held still around him, patient the way it always was, and Raze searched past the obvious answers — I am strong, I will win, I am ready — because he understood, even before Asura said it, that none of those were true yet. They were things he wanted to be true. Transcendent Will didn’t work on wanting.
I don’t run from what I’m afraid of.
It arrived plain and unglamorous, and it was true. He’d proven it enough times now that it no longer felt like a claim.
’Good,’ Asura said, and Raze realized he must have spoken the thought aloud without meaning to. ’Hold that. Don’t inflate it. Don’t decorate it. Let it be exactly as large as it actually is.’
Raze held it.
The change came differently than he expected — not the violent outward eruption of the Shade fight, but something quieter, colder, more total. He felt it settle across his skin first, a texture rather than a heat, and when he opened his eyes he could see it without needing a mirror: black markings tracing up both forearms in patterns that looked less like decoration and more like a language his skin had always known and only now remembered. One eye’s vision sharpened into something with an edge to it, colors resolving with a clarity his other eye couldn’t match.
’There,’ Asura said quietly. ’That is control. That is what it looks like when you stop performing conviction and simply have it.’
Raze flexed his hand and felt the difference in his own weight, his own presence, something settled and certain that hadn’t been there a minute ago. "It’s not trying to explode out of me this time."
’Because you gave it something true to attach to instead of asking it to manufacture strength you hadn’t earned yet. Force without truth behind it is always unstable. This is why the first attempt went wrong — you asked your will to be stronger than you actually believed yourself to be, and it obliged by becoming something neither of us could steer.’
Asura circled him once, studying him the way he’d study his own reflection finally catching up to itself — Raze’s marks the same shape as his own now, Raze’s altered eye the same color, the resemblance between them complete in a way it had never quite been before. Not just a mirror anymore. Something closer to it.
’Test it,’ Asura said, and came in fast.
Raze didn’t reach for Mind Sword or Scarlet Leap this time. He simply moved to meet the strike with his forearm raised, and where in the Shade fight his will had answered with an explosion he couldn’t aim, this time it answered with exactly what he’d asked of it — a barrier, solid and precise, that met Asura’s blade and held.
’Better,’ Asura said, stepping back, something in his tone that might have been the closest thing to pride he allowed himself. ’Considerably better. That is a full night’s work, incidentally — most who attempt to master this capability require years, and that assumes they survive the early attempts at all.’
Raze let the merger fade, the marks receding, the sharpened eye softening back to ordinary sight, and felt the specific exhaustion of having held something enormous steady rather than simply having exerted himself.
"And Reality Rejection?"
’Not tonight.’ Asura’s answer came without hesitation. ’Transcendent Will responds to truth, which you now have some command over. Reality Rejection responds to raw authority over what is real at all, and your bloodline has not awakened far enough to wield that safely. Attempting it before you’re ready doesn’t produce an uncontrolled explosion the way Transcendent Will did. It produces a rejection with no boundary at all — you could unmake something you didn’t intend to touch, including, potentially, yourself. We will return to it. Not in seventeen days.’
Raze nodded, some old frustration rising and then settling just as quickly, because the caution made sense even through the impatience.
He dropped to one knee, breathing hard despite the mind space’s lack of physical reality, his actual body somewhere outside this place committing fully to the exertion regardless. When he’d caught his breath, he did the thing that had replaced his old reflexive habit — the thing he did after every session now.
He opened his status.

Grandmaster.
He read the word twice before it settled. A year at Master Peak had felt like a ceiling with no obvious door in it, right up until the exact moment a door had apparently been there the entire time, waiting on pressure rather than time.
Transcendent Will — Controlled. Not new. Not a capability that hadn’t existed before tonight. Just, finally, something he could reach for on purpose instead of stumbling into once during a fight for his life and spending a year afraid of what it might do the second time.
Demon King Form at S.
He looked at that one the longest. Asura’s own art, refined over a span of time that made Raze’s nineteen years look like a single breath, and the system had just told him his execution of it had crossed into a tier that put him within genuine reach of the entity who’d invented it.
’You’re staring at the window instead of feeling what it means,’ Asura observed. ’That remains a mistake. The window is a description. The feeling is the actual information.’
Raze closed it and let himself feel it instead — not triumph, not yet, not with seventeen days standing between tonight and whatever the Hollow Moon was going to bring to a monastery wall that had already waited four hundred years for someone to come back for it.
Just readiness. Real, hard-earned, still not quite enough, readiness.
