The dark elf stared down at the dead mercenaries scattered across the dusty trail, then let out a low, cold scoff. Without a word of panic, he pulled his reins and gracefully swung his leg over his saddle, dismounting with the silent, fluid grace native to their kind.

As his boots hit the earth, his right hand slid behind his back, unlatching a weapon secured to his travel harness. With a smooth, practiced snap, he extended a long-shafted spear. It was a masterpiece of dark elf craftsmanship, featuring a shaft forged from dense, treated ironwood wrapped in silver wire and a broad, leaf-shaped head forged from a lethal black steel mithril alloy etched with faint, venom-reactive runes.

Zevryn’s pale eyes flicked to the weapon. A traditional surface-scout weapon, yet forged with the unmistakable metallurgical mastery of the deep, forgotten smithies.

"You've grown soft in the sunlight, Zevryn," the dark elf hissed, spinning the spear in a lethal, humming arc that cut the wind. "Let's see if the legends of the Underdark's greatest exile hold up."

Without warning, the scout surged forward.

The clash was instantaneous and fierce. The dark elf leveraged the reach of his spear, thrusting with blinding speed. The black steel mithril alloy tip darted forward like a striking viper, forcing Zevryn to pivot and parry. Clang! The impact of the ironwood shaft against his own black mithril blades sent a heavy shockwave through the air.

The rogue scout was exceptionally skilled. He used the length of the spear to keep Zevryn at bay, sweeping low to clip Zevryn's legs before spinning the weapon behind his back to block a counter-slash, using the butt-end to drive a heavy jab toward Zevryn's ribs. Zevryn deflected the blow, his dual sabers blurring in a defensive mesh of sparks and steel. Every stroke of the spear was calculated, fluid, and deadly.

For several moments, the ridge echoed with the relentless song of combat, steel grinding against alloy and ironwood.

Zevryn parried a vicious overhead thrust, but as the dark elf overextended his reach to pull the spear back for a sweeping cross-cut, a microscopic opening flashed in his guard.

Zevryn didn't hesitate. He had no intention of wasting time or energy on a protracted duel when operational efficiency was paramount. Days prior, during his visit to Curnow’s Masterwork Armory to secure his custom gear and tactical redundancies, Zevryn had quietly commissioned the veteran smith to integrate a concealed, spring-loaded dart mechanism into his forearm guard, serving as a silent insurance policy for close-quarters encounters.

In a blur of motion, even as his sabers parried high, Zevryn flicked his wrist. A tiny, venom-blackened chitin needle snapped forward from the concealed launcher.

Fwip.

The needle buried itself deep into the dark elf’s exposed neck, right beneath his jawline.

The scout froze mid-strike. His eyes widened in shock as a sudden, freezing numbness flooded his veins, locking his muscles in an instant. The masterwork spear slipped from his paralyzed fingers, clattering uselessly against the stone. His legs buckled, and he collapsed heavily into the dust, completely immobilized.

Struggling against the creeping paralysis, his chest heaving, the scout glared up with venomous hatred, his voice a choked gasp.

"You... you used poison?!"

Zevryn stepped forward, his black mithril sabers held ready, casting a long shadow over the fallen elf. He looked down with cold indifference.

"Do you expect I'll fight fair?" Zevryn replied flatly.

Zevryn stared down at the paralyzed scout, his expression locked in ice. "Who sent you?"

Without waiting for the scout to flounder, Zevryn calmly named the targets himself, his voice cutting through the wind. "Malor? Xalthar? Vexis?"

At the utterance of the third name, a subtle, sharp reaction rippled across the scout's features, a sudden tightening of the jaw and a flicker of raw recognition before the paralysis locked his expression back down.

Zevryn caught the reaction instantly. A dark, dangerous glint flashed in his pale eyes.

The scout noticed Zevryn's realization, and a grim, twisted smile broke across his face. "Ah... you know him, don't you?"

"Where is he?" Zevryn snapped, stepping closer, the edge of his blade hovering inches from the scout's throat.

The dark elf’s breathing grew shallow as the paralysis venom began its final, fatal descent toward his core. A wet, rattling chuckle escaped his lips.

"I... I do not know his exact lair, but he will soon know you are looking. I triggered a resonant magical message the moment we intercepted your trail..."

His eyes dilated, a dark shadow spreading across his veins as the heart-stopping poison finished its work. His laugh faded into a final, triumphant wheeze.

"Enjoy your hunt, my lord, because your grave has already been dug."

With a final, sharp shudder, the dark elf’s head slumped sideways into the crimson dust, his crimson eyes glazing over in death.

Zevryn stood in silence over the body, the coastal wind howling across the ridge. Without wasting a moment, he moved methodically from corpse to corpse, looting the fallen mercenaries and the dark elf of their heavy coin pouches and any important gear. Rifling through the dead scout’s travel pack, his fingers brushed against a thick, leather-bound ledger. Opening its pages, he found the entries heavily encrypted and coded, though the scattered city names written throughout were entirely legible to his eye. With a subtle spatial hum, he swept the ledger and the plunder straight into his bronze storage ring.

He picked up the masterwork spear, admiring its indestructible black steel mithril alloy tip. Slinging it securely alongside his saddle gear, he noted its practical utility, knowing it would serve as an exceptional lance when mounted on his black steed for future charges.

Leaving the four bodies sprawled out under the open sky for the carrion birds to feed upon, Zevryn untethered his steed, swung into the saddle, and continued westward. He had a message to answer.
