The midday sun beat down hard on the flagstone courtyard, reflecting a blinding glare off the polished metal of Mateo Fernandez’s twin cutlasses. The crowd of wealthy merchants and aristocrats held their collective breath, leaning forward in their seats as the final challenger of the exhibition prepared to face the drow master.

Mateo rolled his shoulders, spinning his matched blades in a dizzying, lethal cross-pattern that hissed through the air. He was a veteran of the southern duel-pits, renowned for an aggressive, overwhelming dual-wielding style that drowned opponents in a relentless storm of steel.

"Don't expect me to fight like Alejandro," Mateo warned, a confident smirk playing across his lips. "I don't give breathing room."

Zevryn stood completely still, his dark cloak shifting slightly in the courtyard breeze. His pale, luminous eyes tracked the erratic arcs of the twin blades with chilling indifference. He didn't assume a flashy stance; he simply lowered his body into a balanced, low-profile guard, holding his single black mithril saber with absolute, unyielding stillness.

"Begin," the referee called out, dropping his hand.

Mateo exploded forward, closing the distance in a fraction of a second. He unleashed a furious, high-speed barrage, with his right cutlass driving toward Zevryn’s shoulder while his left cutlass snapped low toward his ribs in a deceptive, overlapping cross-slash.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

The courtyard echoed with the rapid-fire resonance of clashing steel. Mateo moved like a whirlwind, pressing the offensive with a dizzying sequence of high and low angles designed to force a parry and trap his opponent in a corner.

High up in the gallery, Julian gripped the stone balustrade so hard his knuckles turned white, while Reniah watched with wide, unblinking eyes, silently analyzing the footwork. Every movement Zevryn made was a live lesson in lethal efficiency.

Zevryn did not block head-on; he absorbed and redirected. Utilizing the fluid, kinetic principles of the Drifting Moon and the spatial awareness honed through his rigorous training, he swayed just a hair's breadth out of range, letting Mateo’s blades slice harmlessly through empty air by millimeters.

Frustrated by the drow’s impenetrable defense, Mateo committed to a dangerous gamble, pulling both blades back for a synchronized, maximum-power cross-cleave.

It was the exact moment Zevryn chose to break his restraint.

As Mateo drove his twin blades forward in a desperate, overlapping strike, Zevryn effortlessly stepped inside the cross-guard. With a crisp, metallic snap, his off-hand swept down, drawing his short saber from its hip sheath.

"If you call that dual swordsmanship," Zevryn stated flatly, his voice cutting clearly through the ringing steel as his newly drawn short saber effortlessly batted and pinned both of Mateo's heavy cutlasses outward in a humiliating, unbreakable bind, "then consider this a lesson in what real dual combat actually requires. Up until now, I didn't even need to draw my short saber against you. I simply pinpointed the glaring weaknesses in your timing and form. Watch closely: this is how. Remember this."

In a flash of dark steel, Zevryn dissolved into motion. With his short saber locking the center line in a vice-like grip, his primary mithril saber erupted in a blinding, fluid combo featuring a deceptive low feinting circle that forced Mateo's gaze downward, followed instantly by a lightning-fast upward flick that mirrored the Drifting Moon technique, striking the flat of Mateo's left cutlass to shatter his rhythm, before spinning inward with a hyper-accelerated cross-step that slipped clean through the southern swordsman's shattered guard.

Before Mateo could blink or adjust his footing, Zevryn's primary mithril saber whipped upward in a seamless, phantom arc, coming to a dead stop. The razor-sharp tip rested gently against the hollow of Mateo’s throat, while his short saber locked Mateo's twin weapons completely out of alignment.

The entire courtyard went dead silent.

Mateo froze mid-motion, his eyes crossed slightly as he stared down at the blade touching his skin. Sweat dripped down his temple, and his chest heaved with ragged breaths. He had poured everything into his dual-wielding assault, yet the drow had not only humiliated him, but used him as a live canvas to demonstrate true dual mastery.

Slowly, Mateo lowered his twin cutlasses, a mixture of absolute shock and profound awe washing over his face.

"I... I yield," Mateo panted, offering a stiff, respectful bow. "You aren't just a master, drow. You're a ghost."

The amphitheater erupted into an absolute frenzy of cheers, roaring applause, and shouting nobles. Master Aldous leaped to his feet, clapping wildly as his investment paid off beyond his wildest dreams. High up in the VIP gallery, Julian and Reniah looked down at their master with eyes full of absolute, reverent worship, knowing the immense gulf of skill that separated true mastery from mere combat.

Zevryn sheathed both blades with a synchronized, quiet click, bowing his head slightly in cold acknowledgment. He stepped back from the center of the ring, but as the applause thundered around him, his pale eyes returned to the shadows of the upper colonnade.

The exhibition had served its purpose. The entire republic now knew his name and his blade. It was only a matter of time before the shadows answered.
