The morning sun hung pale over the maritime republic as the iron gate of the safehouse clicked open at precisely eight o'clock. It had been more than a week since Zevryn had last stepped foot inside the courtyard—days spent descending into the true Iron Spine tomb, dealing with Cassandra, and dismantling Lysander's operations from the shadows.

As he crossed the threshold, the sharp, rhythmic clack of wood on wood drew his attention toward the rear training yard.

Zevryn paused in the shadows of the portico, his pale eyes observing the yard. Julian and Reniah were locked in an intense sparring match. The arrogant, posturing scion who had first stumbled into the safehouse weeks ago was entirely gone; in his place stood a disciplined, sweat-drenched young fighter holding his ground against the drow's first student.

Julian’s footwork was tighter, his posture balanced and deliberate, bringing him nearly to Reniah’s level. Yet, Reniah remained the more lethal combatant. Her movements possessed an instinctive, predatory flow born of her harsh upbringing.

Mid-exchange, Julian committed too heavily to a sweeping overhead strike. In a fraction of a second, Reniah spotted the microscopic opening. She slipped smoothly inside his reach, pivoting on her heel, and drove the tip of her training blade straight against the center of his chest before he could recover his guard.

Julian stumbled back, gasping for air, unable to parry the decisive blow. He lowered his wooden sword with a weary, respectful nod.

Clap. Clap.

The slow, rhythmic sound of applause made both students jump. They turned to see Zevryn standing by the stone archway, his dark cloak swept back over his shoulders.

"Good," Zevryn said, his voice cutting cleanly through the morning air. "You two have progressed well."

He walked over to the low stone bench and sat down, gesturing with a gloved hand. "Come here, you two."

Julian and Reniah hurried over, standing side-by-side in front of their master. With a subtle flick of his bronze spatial ring, Zevryn produced two wrapped packages and laid them across the bench.

He slid the first one toward the merchant's son. Julian unwrapped the cloth to reveal a beautifully crafted one-handed steel sword. It wasn't forged from pure, weightless mithril, but rather a master-grade mixed alloy that offered exceptional balance, durability, and a clean, razor-sharp edge. Julian’s eyes widened with reverent awe as he gripped the hilt.

Zevryn then slid the second package toward Reniah. She peeled back the leather wrap, revealing a finely forged, lightweight short sword. Its shorter blade and ergonomic grip were tailor-made for her speed, agility, and slender frame, feeling like a natural extension of her arm.

"Train well with these," Zevryn instructed, his expression unreadable. "Master the fundamentals. When I see sufficient progress, maybe I will teach you an advanced skill."

Both students bowed deeply, clutching their new weapons with fierce determination.

"Continue your practice," Zevryn commanded, standing up from the bench.

He left them in the courtyard, retreating to his private quarters within the safehouse. Stripping off his travel-worn gear, he washed away the dust of the road and changed into clean garments, layering his fitted leather armor over his tunic and pulling his storm-grey cloak securely over his shoulders.

Stepping back out into the yard before heading for the door, Zevryn caught Julian's eye.

"The training ends early today," Zevryn told the young merchant, adjusting his collar. "Go home and rest. Come back again tomorrow."

Without waiting for a reply, Zevryn slipped through the iron gate, locking it behind him as he headed down the cobblestone street toward the local inn to check on the pulse of the city.
