The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

Chapter 82: THE OUTPOST THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPAIRED

  • Next Chapter

RAIGORO’S POV

West Rime should have received four crates of repair material three weeks ago.

Central Logistics said it had.

The outpost’s own requests said otherwise.

By the time the first fracture report reached Blackharrow, the contradiction was already hours old.

Raigoro stood inside Command Terrace with the West Rime dispatch open beneath one hand.

It had left the outpost shortly after dawn.

By the time Blackharrow received it, afternoon had already begun.

The report confirmed visible fractures across two outer anchor lines, rising ward pressure, and increased corrupted movement beyond the markers.

A second sheet had traveled with it.

West Rime’s local engineers had checked the repair stores after the first fractures appeared.

The wardstone recorded as delivered three weeks earlier was not there.

Neither was enough reserve material to complete the reinforcement originally planned.

Raigoro checked the dispatch time again. Every decision he made would begin with information already hours behind the field.

Daric placed the missing-shipment file beside the new reports.

"Four crates."

"Enough?"

"Enough to reinforce the damaged anchors before winter pressure rose this high."

Raigoro looked toward Senior Engineer Bastan Holt. Senior Ward Specialist Julius Renn stood beside him with the latest ward-pressure readings spread across the table.

Renn handled the ward itself: anchor behavior, pressure transfer, and ward-specific safety. Holt handled what failure meant physically: roads, reinforcement, temporary structures, repair access, and the work required to keep crews operating.

"Can West Rime hold?"

Renn looked at the pressure readings.

"With what is physically present?"

"Yes."

"For now."

Raigoro disliked the answer.

"What breaks first?"

Renn pointed to the outer line.

"Anchor three was already unstable when the dispatch left. Four had begun carrying additional pressure."

Raigoro looked at Holt.

"Physical consequence?"

Holt pulled the diagram closer.

"If the load keeps shifting, every repair becomes harder. Crews lose safe access first. Then adjacent structures begin carrying stress they were not built to take."

"Can they reinforce it?"

"With the missing material? Not properly."

"How much repair material is physically present?"

Holt gave the confirmed quantity.

Raigoro compared it with the central record.

The false delivery had concealed enough missing material to matter.

Daric asked, "Natural pressure or attack?"

"We cannot establish that yet."

Scouts reported corrupted creatures gathering outside the ward.

That could be a response rather than cause.

Ashen creatures often moved toward weakness.

A damaged ward could attract pressure without anyone directing them.

But the missing shipment had weakened West Rime before the creatures gathered.

Two explanations remained.

Either someone had knowingly weakened a position that happened to come under pressure,

or the pressure was not happening there by accident.

Raigoro did not yet know which.

Neither permitted delay.

Raigoro turned to the command clerk.

"Mobilize the nearest reinforcement company."

"Yes, Your Grace."

"Engineer team first."

Holt nodded.

"Replacement stone?" Raigoro asked.

Daric checked the northern reserve ledger.

"The nearest military reserve depot has enough for emergency reinforcement."

"Release it."

A command clerk began writing.

Holt asked, "Engineers?"

"The advance team changes horses through the northern posts. Heavy tools and stone follow by wagon."

"The people may reach West Rime before the material."

"Then they begin with what the outpost physically has."

Holt nodded.

The advance engineers would arrive before the heavy wagons. There was no faster way to put four crates of wardstone on a distant mountain.

Raigoro looked toward the Dragon Host duty board.

"Available northern pairs?"

Captain Veyr answered.

"Two can be redirected toward North Rise. Another remains on Citadel readiness."

"Send the first two to staging. They do not enter an unknown Ashen concentration until field scouts give them something useful."

Veyr nodded.

The first mobilization horn sounded through the Citadel.

Command Terrace changed around it.

Clerks carried sealed orders.

Quartermasters opened reserve lists.

Engineers requested loading priority.

Medical Command received casualty preparation notice.

No one treated the cracked ward as proof of a major attack.

They prepared for the possibility anyway.

The Duchess arrived while Holt was explaining the repair sequence.

Her Household Guards stopped outside the command boundary.

She remained in the cleared outer review area.

Raigoro went to her.

She held the West Rime limited file under one arm.

Her slate already carried a question.

THE MISSING SHIPMENT?

"Yes."

She wrote: THEN SOMEONE CAUSED THIS.

"Someone contributed to the condition."

The Duchess looked dissatisfied.

Raigoro continued.

"We do not know whether the current pressure was planned."

She considered.

Then: THE CREATURES CAME AFTER IT WEAKENED?

"The larger concentration was reported after visible fractures began."

She nodded slowly.

That supported natural attraction to weakness.

It did not eliminate deliberate guidance.

The Duchess looked past him toward the mobilization traffic.

ARE YOU LEAVING?

"Not yet."

Her attention returned to him.

"West Rime has officers. I have more useful information here until we know whether this is one ward problem or something larger."

The Duchess looked almost relieved.

She erased the question.

Raigoro noticed.

That awareness had become inconvenient since the cavern.

He was increasingly aware of the expression she made before hiding relief, the food she preferred, the arguments she considered reasonable despite disliking them, and how quickly her attention found him when a military message arrived.

Since Valence, Raigoro had wanted to know who his bride was and what Odran had done. Now he also knew which preserve she chose, when she was hiding relief, and how quickly she looked for him when military messages arrived.

None of that answered the older questions.

His wife wrote: WHAT CAN I DO?

"Keep the audit moving."

She looked toward the war room.

"The missing shipment made this outpost weaker. If there are others, I want them before they become emergencies."

That was enough.

She turned immediately.

No complaint that the battle preparations remained restricted.

No attempt to follow soldiers north.

Raigoro watched her go toward the archive passage with Alma.

Daric came to stand beside him.

"You look concerned."

"West Rime is cracking."

"I meant the other direction."

Raigoro looked at him.

Daric returned to the map.

Wise.

The West Rime dispatch contained one final field note.

Scouts had observed corrupted movement increasing beyond the outer markers before the message left.

Mixed species.

No confirmed assault.

No reliable count.

That information was already old too.

Raigoro could not know whether the creatures had dispersed during the intervening hours.

He also could not afford to assume they had.

Holt looked toward the neighboring defensive section.

"North Spur keeps emergency reserve because the mountain road between the positions becomes unreliable in heavy winter."

Raigoro looked at the amount.

Enough to help West Rime.

Enough that removing most of it would make North Spur considerably less forgiving of its own emergency.

"Leave it where it is."

Daric nodded.

"Northern reserve depot supplies West Rime."

A clerk entered before the next order could be written.

"Your Grace. North Spur acknowledgment."

Raigoro held out his hand.

The document was not an emergency report.

It was administrative confirmation of an order already received.

EMERGENCY TRANSFER RECEIVED.

WEST RIME SUPPORT.

RESERVE WARDSTONE PREPARING FOR MOVEMENT.

Raigoro read it once.

Then checked the originating authority.

Regional Command.

Daric came around the table.

"We did not issue that."

"No."

Raigoro looked at the dispatch dates.

The order had reached North Spur the previous night.

Before West Rime’s fracture report had reached the Citadel.

Before Raigoro had authorized any reinforcement at all.

Someone had ordered North Spur to surrender most of its reserve stone for an emergency Blackharrow had not yet known existed.

Daric reread the originating authority.

"I’ll send a hold order."

"Not by horse."

Captain Veyr looked over.

Raigoro handed him the false acknowledgment.

"Assign a courier pair. North Spur does not move one wagon until Command verifies this."

Veyr nodded once and left to send them.

The Dragon Host courier would cost them one available pair for several hours.

The alternative was allowing an apparently forged command order to strip a second ward.

Raigoro looked toward the administrative review passage.

"Get the Duchess."

Daric took the copy.

"You already know it is false."

"I know I did not send it."

Raigoro looked again at the timestamp.

"I want to know what made someone believe North Spur would obey."

West Rime was already weak.

Someone had begun preparing to weaken its neighbor before Blackharrow even knew the first ward was cracking.
