The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride
Chapter 53: THE RESIN REPORT
RAIGORO’S POV
The black resin matched closely enough to become useful and poorly enough to become irritating.
Daric placed the laboratory report beside the battlefield evidence.
"The binding base comes from the same general process," he said. "The impurities and heat exposure differ enough that the examiner cannot identify a single batch or maker."
Raigoro read the comparison.
The material recovered from the wounded patrol dragon had been tested against the resin found on the barbed points used during the attack on his wife’s camp.
"What can he establish?"
"That the formula is specialized. It is designed to keep certain compounds adhered to metal or tissue under heat, moisture, and movement."
"Ordinary commercial use?"
"Limited."
"Known producers?"
Daric opened the second page.
"Three inside Blackharrow can make a comparable base. Two primarily serve mining and industrial clients. The third produces military-grade binding compounds that move through several merchant intermediaries across the Five Crowns."
Raigoro read the names.
"Direct sale connected to Valence?"
"None found."
"Dragon Host purchases?"
"None matching the tested material."
"Third Watch?"
"Nothing."
The absence did not clear anyone.
The material could be purchased through another merchant, transferred, stolen, resold, or produced beyond Blackharrow using the same method.
Raigoro pushed the page back.
"Trace movement rather than names."
"Already started."
"Quietly."
Daric gave him a look. "I had intended to announce the investigation during market."
Raigoro ignored him.
Master Clair had sent word that the Duchess had asked to see the comparison between the patrol-dragon sample and the material recovered after the northern road attack.
Raigoro had approved a restricted version.
One sample came from an attempt on her life. The other came from a Dragon Host dragon whose behavior around her had already become part of Clair’s records. If corruption remained one possible condition in those observations, keeping the permitted findings from her would make the work worse rather than safer.
Raigoro still did not know how deeply his wife belonged inside Odran’s deception. He did know someone had tried to kill her, and withholding relevant findings would not protect her from whatever remained.
A Command guard announced the party before opening the records-room door. Raigoro’s approval covered this briefing only, and the Duchess’s two Household Guards remained at the controlled passage outside.
The door opened.
His wife entered with Alma and Healer Lou.
Several scraps of paper protruded from the anatomy booklet beneath her arm. Charcoal marked the side of one finger.
Healer Lou had given her the book this morning, for sure.
Apparently his wife had disagreed with the idea that morning was recent.
The healer said, "Her Grace finished the scheduled observation. Master Clair said Command Terrace approved her request."
Raigoro nodded.
She sat opposite him and placed the anatomy book beside her slate.
He looked at the markers along the top.
"How much have you read?"
She wrote: DRAGONS HAVE TOO MANY BONES.
Healer Lou folded her arms.
"They have exactly the number they require."
His wife turned the slate toward her.
TOO MANY.
Daric looked toward the book.
"How many would you prefer?"
She gave him a long stare.
Raigoro said, "Fewer, apparently."
She nodded.
Healer Lou left before the conversation could further damage her profession.
Raigoro turned the evidence report toward his wife.
"This concerns the attack on the northern road."
The humor disappeared from her face, but she did not reach for the report immediately. Raigoro understood the hesitation. She had spent most of their marriage being questioned about investigations, not invited to read them.
No question followed.
He tapped the page once.
"Read."
Only then did she pull the report closer.
Raigoro gave her the limits first.
The same specialized binding process.
Significant similarity.
Enough material difference that no one could claim one batch, one producer, or one user.
She read the laboratory findings again.
Then wrote: THE WOUNDED DRAGON?
"Yes."
SAME RESIN?
"Related."
Daric leaned one hand against the table. "Related closely enough that tracing the supply method is worthwhile. Not closely enough to say whoever sent the ash hounds also injured the patrol dragon."
His wife wrote: THEN THE ATTACK MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ONLY ABOUT THE BRIDE.
Raigoro had reached the same possibility.
"If Odran substituted another bride, killing her could still protect whatever deception began at the wedding. That remains possible."
His wife stopped turning the page.
Her fingers remained against the lower corner of the report, holding it more tightly than before.
Raigoro could not tell which part had caught her. The possibility of substitution, or the reminder that someone had tried to kill her because of it.
After a moment, she continued reading.
"The patrol attack widens the question," he said.
She thought for several seconds.
Then wrote: OR SOMEONE USES THE SAME MATERIAL FOR DIFFERENT THINGS.
"Yes," Daric said.
Daric closed the supplier sheet.
"I’ll trace purchase movement under both possibilities."
His wife nodded.
Her attention remained on the description of the patrol dragon’s wound.
After a moment she wrote: DOES CORRUPTION CHANGE HOW DRAGONS BEHAVE?
Daric glanced toward Raigoro.
That question crossed several professions at once.
His wife seemed to realize it too.
She wrote beneath the first sentence: THE WOUNDED DRAGON REACTED TO ME WHILE CORRUPTED MATERIAL WAS STILL IN HER WOUND.
Then: VHAROS IS ILL.
Her chalk stopped over the second sentence. After several seconds, she erased it herself.
Daric noticed.
"What were you going to ask?"
She considered.
Then wrote: WHETHER CORRUPTION CHANGES THE REACTION.
A better question.
"That belongs to Master Clair and the Dragon Healers as much as it belongs to this investigation."
She nodded.
She looked again at the report.
Then: CAN I HAVE A COPY?
"Of the permitted findings."
She waited.
"No supplier names."
Her expression suggested she had expected that.
Daric said, "You are becoming accustomed to people refusing you access to records."
She wrote: I AM BECOMING ACCUSTOMED TO YOU SAYING NO.
"That will prepare you for government."
Raigoro sent the laboratory summary to a clerk to prepare a restricted copy.
While they waited, his wife opened the anatomy booklet.
Notes filled several margins.
Most were questions rather than statements.
One page had been marked beside pain behavior.
Another beside corrupted tissue.
Raigoro turned the booklet slightly enough to read one note.
IF PAIN CHANGES BEHAVIOR, HOW DO WE SEPARATE PAIN FROM REACTION?
He looked at his wife.
Weeks ago, she had been the unexplained variable everyone else watched.
Now she was beginning to decide what should be watched.
The distinction mattered.
The clerk returned with the approved resin summary.
His wife took it and placed it inside the anatomy booklet.
Before closing the cover, she wrote three short lines on a clean sheet.
PAIN?
CORRUPTION?
ME?
Raigoro read them upside down.
Three possibilities without a conclusion.
Good.
She closed the book.
Daric waited until she and Alma had gone before looking toward Raigoro.
"You are doing it again."
Raigoro looked at him.
"Watching your wife leave after pretending you were not watching what she was doing."
"I was reading her notes."
"Yes."
"They were relevant."
"Of course."
Raigoro returned to the supplier report.
Daric had enough instinct for survival not to continue.
Tomorrow, his wife would take the resin question back to the Dragon Heights.
Raigoro suspected Master Clair was about to acquire more paperwork.
